Welcome to episode 111 with William McCarthy who is a musician, songwriter, and the former lead singer of the band Augustines. Bill grew up around mental illness, alcoholism, and poverty.  When he was 19, his mother died by suicide after many years of addiction and deteriorating mental health issues.  His younger brother was also diagnosed with a mental illness and also died by suicide whilst being held in prison without the proper care and support. These experiences, and the story of Bill's childhood, largely inspired the songs for the first Augustines record and his story, and that of the band, was told in the documentary ‘Rise: The Story of Augustines' which came out in 2018. I caught up with Bill to chat about his early experiences with mental ill health and how they form the basis of his personal crusade to raise awareness around mental health issues. We chat about being in a band and life on the road.  We chat about how mental illness is misreported by the media and how that informs stigma, and we chat about human connection, showing compassion and the need for good role models. Bill has recently been to Canada to play music and speak to school children about mental health and we chat about that too. William McCarthy is one of my all-time favourite musicians from one of my all-time favourite bands so to say this episode was special for me was an understatement! You can find out more about Bill and everything he's up to via his website here: www.williammccarthy.org You can follow him on social media @williamjmccarthey You can buy his music via Bandcamp here: Music | William McCarthy (bandcamp.com) The documentary is available on amazon, watch the trailer here: RISE: The Story of Augustines (Official Trailer 2019) - YouTube   *PODBIBLE LISTENER POLL 2022 - VOTE FOR PROPER MENTAL* POD BIBLE LISTENER POLLS 2022 - VOTE NOW! | POD BIBLE (podbiblemag.com) You can connect with me on social media @propermentalpodcast and you can connect with me via the website here: www.propermentalpodcast.com If you would like to support Proper Mental by buying me a virtual coffee, please go to www.buymeacoffee.com/propermental Another way to support is to rate, review and subscribe on whatever platform you get your podcasts from! As we cover so much of the tumultuous year of 1968, we thought we would add one of its brightest moments too. As the country struggled with Civil Rights, assassinations, civil unrest,  and a war in Vietnam we also moved closer to a dream that stretched back to the beginning of life itself.  As long as man has been capable of looking into the heavens we have dreamed of walking on the moon. By December of 1968, we were in reach of that dream becoming a reality at last. During the week of Christmas the first manned mission to the Moon occurred when the Apollo 8 Saturn rocket took off to the moon. In it were Astronauts Frank Bormann,  William Anders and Jim Lovell, their mission was to go to the moon, take some pictures for potential landing locations for later flights, and return home safely, alive and well. They did that and much, much more.In the ultimate of ironies, the United States and the Soviet Union were locked in a space race to get to the moon, they had spent billions of dollars, and developed all types of technology to discover what was there on the moon but when this mission was done  the discovery would actually be the Earth instead. For it was on this flight with just a little bit of color film in an old 1960's technology camera that we finally got to see what the Earth looked like from Outer Space. Earth-rise is now the most widely distributed photograph in the history of the World and it was taken on this mission, during the most divisive, tumultuous year in modern history, yet for that brief week, these three men on a mission to the moon brought the country and the world together. And from the Lunar orbit of the Moon, on Christmas Eve 1968,  they read a special message to the widest audience in communications history, from a book written nearly 2700 years before....

This hour, Jamie discusses the news of the day, and speaks with Mitchell Zuckoff. Mitchell is a professor of journalism at Boston University, and the author of numerous books, including 13 Hours (made into a movie), Lost in Shangri-La, and Frozen in Time. As a member of the Spotlight Team (highlighted in the movie “Spotlight”) at the Boston Globe, he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for investigative reporting and the winner of numerous national awards. His latest work is FALL AND RISE: The Story of 9/11. On the morning of September 11, 2001, the bestselling author and journalist was on book leave from the Boston Globe. His editor called: two airplanes had struck the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack. Both passenger jets had taken off from Boston’s Logan Airport. Zuckoff rushed to the newsroom and wrote the lead story that appeared on Page One of the Globe the next day. For months after, Zuckoff wrote about the attacks, the perpetrators, the victims, and their families. So began an abiding commitment to the true story of that day, culminating in FALL AND RISE: The Story of 9/11.

It's been almost 18 years since Islamic terrorists murdered nearly 3,000 Americans in the 9/11 attacks. What are some of the personal stories of horror and heroism that the next generation needs to know? Award-winning journalist Mitchell Zuckoff, who covered 9/11 for the Boston Globe, joins me to talk about it and his book, "Fall and Rise: The Story of 9/11." Plus: Dr. Kevin Leman discusses the secrets to lifelong romance in his book, "The Intimate Connection." That's next time on Thursday's JANET MEFFERD TODAY.

When dead things rise - the story of nature, of Jesus and of me

I hear many people say that they can't wait to get to heaven - to be in their "forever home" with their forever family. But, if heaven is the ultimate destination, why did Jesus raise Lazarus from the grave? Why did he weep at his tomb? Why did Jesus himself rise from death? No matter how much one says they want to "get to heaven", instinctively we all have a desire to stay here and live; it is built into the fragments of our DNA and our natural instinct. The story of Jesus isn't merely his death on a cross and his coming back to life - that was the final chapter of a continual picture of dead things coming back to life. The story of a life to the fullest, cups running over and a life filled with more. Of dead hopes being reborn, social stigmas being removed and of things we think we will never see coming to life being reborn. This is the story of nature, the story of Jesus and story of me.  Anna's website: www.justajesusfollower.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/annadimmel
