Inspired by the Kris Paronto interview with Shawn Ryan, Professor Paul read the book “13 Hours” by Michael Zuckoff. As usual, Paul read the book with a pen and highlighters close at hand. We began the discussion on Wednesday's public hour and now we will continue addressing this topic in depth. Paul took four pages of notes regarding lessons that can be learned from the attacks on 9/11/12. What is the job of a bodyguard? What did General Patton say about a “good plan”? Why do sheep fear the sheepdog more so than the wolf? We will answer all these questions and more. Don't miss this episode. Join Meghan as she talks with the brilliantly warm, trauma informed author, Jessica DuLong, about her extraordinary book: Saved At The Seawall.  A deeply emotional, and personal telling of one of the greatest stories of hope from 9/11, that you may have never heard before.  Jessica and Meghan talk  PTSD, brain science and the ways in which writing can help manage trauma and allow us to tell some of the most important stories of hope. “The greatest 9/11 story you've never heard.” —   Garrett M. Graff, The Only Plane in the Sky “No one has told this incredible story better than Jessica DuLong. Saved at the Seawall is a moving page-turner.”  — Kenneth T. Jackson, president emeritus, New-York Historical Society        The definitive history of the largest ever waterborne evacuation, when ferries, dinner boats, and other vessels spontaneously converged to rescue nearly 500,000 stranded people from Manhattan on September 11, 2001 SAVED AT THE SEAWALL reveals the dramatic story of how the New York Harbor maritime community heroically delivered stranded commuters, residents, and visitors out of harm's way. Even before the US Coast Guard called for “all available boats,” tugs, ferries, dinner boats, and other vessels had sped to the rescue from points all across New York Harbor. In less than nine hours, captains and crews transported nearly half a million people from Manhattan. Anchored in eyewitness accounts and written by a mariner who served at Ground Zero, SAVED AT THE SEAWALL weaves together the personal stories of people rescued that day with those of the mariners who saved them.  Jessica DuLong describes the inner workings of New York Harbor and reveals the collaborative power of its close-knit community. Initially published as Dust to Deliverance, this edition, released in time for the 20th anniversary, contains new updates: a preface by DuLong and a foreword by Mitchell Zuckoff. https://bookshop.org/books/saved-at-the-seawall-stories-from-the-september-11-boat-lift/9781501759123 https://jessicadulong.com/saved-at-the-seawall/

Charles Ponzi is a mama's boy, he's a pisces, he's 5'2. He's.....the man of my dreams. While many historians have actually pieced together a pretty cogent puzzle of the life Ponzi lived, none are as brave as I am because none of them acknowledge that he's a total smokeshow. I'm sure you're reading this like "she's doing a joke right now" but I AM NOT. Anyways, huge thanks to Mitchell Zuckoff, whose book on Ponzi is enrapturing. He also co-hosts the Battleline Podcast, where he interviews the best and biggest names in the special operations community.  In this episode, Adam and Kris discuss instructor development and key takeaways to become a well-rounded instructor with the ability to create and maintain attention, engagement, and learning within your students. He was part of the CIA annex security team that responded to the terrorist attack on the U.S. Special Mission in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11th, 2012.  All alone with no help, these “secret soldiers of Benghazi” fought off terrorists for 13 hours and saved over 20 American lives. Kris's story along with his brothers in arms from that night is told in the book 13 Hours, written by Mitchell Zuckoff.    After giving up his career to go public and tell the truth about Benghazi, Kris founded the 14th Hour Foundation to help ensure that others who've served and sacrificed to protect the American homeland, as well as their immediate families, get the help they need. He has dedicated himself to honoring and helping those who've served and sacrificed for America, after their mission or fight -- their “14th hour.”   Among many other accomplishments, Kris is also author of USA Today Bestseller, The Ranger Wayas well as The Patriot's Creed. We discuss the key features of Altman's visionary film style, trace the vicissitudes of his storied career and ‘get into it' on a number of real favourites, including the essential revisionist western texts McCabe and Mrs Miller (1971) and Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson (1976) and the brilliantly realised comic musical, Popeye (1980), before finishing up with our top 5 Altman films (at the time of recording!). The Battle of Benghazi: On September 11, 2011, Islamic militants attacked the American Diplomatic Compound in Benghazi, Libya. Quiet and precise, Tig was the most experienced Annex Security Team member. Defying a stand down order, he along with his team, rushed into burning buildings to defend the Consulate and fought arm-in-arm in defense of the Annex, holding off the radical Islamic terrorist until CIA employees could be safely evacuated. No American forces showed up to assist the security team during those 13 hours of combat and four Americans lost their lives; Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, Information Officer Sean Smith, and two CIA operatives, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, both former Navy Seals. If not for the heroic acts of Tig and his team that number would be much greater. Tig personally saved the lives of many of his team and was paramount in rescuing over two dozen others. He received the Award for Heroism and Valor for his bravery that night. Tig teamed up with other members of the Annex Security Team and New York Times best-selling author, Mitchell Zuckoff, to write 13 Hour: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi. “We wanted to honor Bub and Rone by making sure their story—our story—was told and not by the media or politicians in Washington but by those of us who fought alongside them,” Tig stated. In 2015, the book was made into a movie. In 1999, while stationed in Twentynine Palms, California, Tig met his wife Margaret, a native Texan from San Antonio who was in the United States Army. Margaret served in the military for four years before also becoming a contractor. The two have been married for 19 years and are the proud parents to two six-year-old twins. They reside on their ranch in Colorado. https://www.johntiegen.com/pages/bio

This week at In The Past Lane, the American History podcast, we take a look at the first great police scandal in US history. It occurred in the mid-1890s in New York City when an investigation into the NYPD exposed widespread corruption and brutality throughout the force, from its highest-ranking officers to the lowly beat cop. To walk us through this scandal, I speak with historian Daniel Czitrom about his book, New York Exposed: The Gilded Age Police Scandal That Launched the Progressive Era (Oxford U Press, 2016). It’s a story that makes clear that policing in the US has always been controversial. 090: Planning Makes You Adaptable - Interview with Kris "Tanto" Paronto

The Safety Pro Podcast

In this podcast episode, I take a break from the technical topics to which my readers and podcast listeners are accustomed. I wanted to interview someone from outside normal safety circles, someone that can bring a unique perspective on the values we want to hold as safety professionals: integrity, honesty, teamwork, never-quit attitude. Please be sure to listen to the interview as it is not transcribed here. Please read more about Kris below. Kris Paronto Kris Paronto - “Tanto” as he is affectionately known in security contracting circles - is a former Army Ranger from 2nd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment and a private security contractor who has deployed throughout South America, Central America, the Middle East, and North Africa. He also worked with the US Government’s Global Response Staff conducting low profile security in high threat environments throughout the world. Mr. Paronto was part of the CIA annex security team that responded to the terrorist attack on the US Special Mission in Benghazi, Libya, September 11th, 2012, helping to save over 20 lives while fighting off terrorists from the CIA Annex for over 13 hours. Mr. Paronto’s story is told in the book “13 Hours” written by Mitchell Zuckoff and his five surviving annex security team members. The Patriot's Creed When Kris began talking with civilians about his experiences fighting the terrorist attack on the US State Department Special Mission Compound in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012, he was surprised at how often people told him that the story of his extraordinary battle gave them the courage to face tough times in their everyday lives. "The odds were stacked against us that night but the truth is that we refused to quit and we beat them with faith, teamwork, and the principles that were first instilled in me when I joined the Army. You can find those in the Rangers Creed and the Army Values," he says, "and you don't have to be a Special Operations soldier to use them." In The Patriot's Creed, Kris uses the seven core Army Values that all soldiers learn in Basic Combat Training, and the experiences of other servicemen and women and First Responders, to explain how anyone can improve themselves, the world around them, and live a heroic life. The stakes are dramatic for the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to fight for America, and too many of their acts of courage and honor are unknown. The examples of their persistence and discipline will be inspiring to anyone facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles. At a time of national polarization, Kris draws attention to values all readers can share and use, and to the honor, integrity, and courage of true patriots who have gone to great lengths to protect and serve. They embody the best of us and make Kris Paronto proud to be an American soldier. The Ranger Way Thousands of people have heard Kris "Tanto" Paronto speak about his experiences in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. But before he was a security contractor, Tanto was a US Army Ranger from the 2nd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment. Rangers are trained to lead by being pushed to their physical and mental limits so that they can perform against impossible odds in punishing situations. In THE RANGER WAY, Tanto shares stories from his training experiences that played a role in his team's heroic response in Benghazi as he explains the importance of demanding excellence when you commit to improving your life. He shows you how to define your mission, set goals that are in alignment with your values, and develop a battle plan that will maximize your chances of success. You will learn why you should never quit and why that is different from never failing. Tanto uses his experiences in Basic and Ranger Training to explore how to deal with mistakes and disappointment like a leader, accept responsibility, and turn every obstacle into an opportunity for growth. You will learn why being of service to others, and being willing to sacrifice, will help you succeed, and how the power of humility, strength, faith, and brotherhood will sustain you on the road to accomplishing your mission. 13 Hours The harrowing, true account from the brave men on the ground who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi. 13 HOURS presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal account, never before told, of what happened during the thirteen hours of that now-infamous attack. They start off by talking about confidence and being given the "hero" tag. Kris explains why he does not see himself as a hero and still thinks it's strange when he is recognized in public. Chuck and Mark share some thoughts on why that is different than today's younger generations. Mark moves the conversation into the events in Benghazi that almost cost Kris his life. We can learn a huge amount from the history and the figures, but Jason Hartman also steers the discussion into a more contemporary tone, asking Zuckoff for his advice on identifying bad deals and how to avoid getting sucked in. Key Takeaways: 1.57 – Mitchell Zuckoff takes us through the past of the man who characterized Ponzi schemes 06.34 – Swindles have existed for centuries, but what makes a Ponzi scheme so specific? 11.57 – Strangely, there is evidence to suggest that Ponzi's intentions weren't even as swindling as presumed 17.34 – The success Ponzi had in such a short time is really mind-boggling. Consider inflation as well and you can understand why he gained such notoriety 18.08 – It's important that we learn from these aspects of history to not get caught up ourselves 22.25 – Unbelievably, people are still getting caught up in scandals involving money in Nigeria. In The Past Lane - The Podcast About History and Why It Matters

Who doesn't love a good scandal - so long as it doesn't involve them? This week at In The Past Lane we examine the important -- and often positive -- role scandals have played in American history. Here's the lineup: 1) a short segment on the role of scandals in US history 2) an interview with historian Daniel Czitrom about his new book, New York Exposed: The Gilded Age Police Scandal That Launched the Progressive Era (Oxford U Press, 2016). We talk about the famous Lexow Commission investigation into allegations of widespread corruption involving the political machine Tammany Hall and the New York City Police Dept. Dan also draws important links to key issues confronting American society in 2016 - police violence and the origins of the so-called "blue wall of silence" and voting suppression efforts. 3) a look at the scandal in the meatpacking industry triggered by the publication in 1906 of Upton Sinclair's famous novel, The Jungle. Three survivors were stranded deep in a jungle valley inhabited by cannibals. The story of their survival and the efforts undertaken to save them are the crux of Lost in Shangri-La. Last night, former Boston Globe Spotlight team member, award-winning reporter and current BU journalism professor Mitchell Zuckoff joined me in studio for the full 8pm hour to discuss his incredible book Lost in Shangri La: A True Story of Survival, Adventure, and the Most Incredible Rescue Mission of World War II. "On May 13, 1945, twenty-four officers and enlisted men and women stationed on what was then Dutch New Guinea boarded a transport plane named the Gremlin Special for a sightseeing trip over “Shangri-La,” a beautiful and mysterious valley surrounded by steep, jagged mountain peaks deep within the island’s uncharted jungle. But the pleasure tour became an unforgettable battle for survival when the plane crashed. Miraculously, three passengers survived – WAC Corporal Margaret Hastings, Lieutenant John McCollom, and Sergeant Kenneth Decker. Emotionally devastated, badly injured, and vulnerable to disease, parasites, and poisonous snakes in the wet jungle climate, the trio was caught between man-eating headhunters and the enemy Japanese. With nothing to sustain them but a handful of candy and their own fortitude, they endured a harrowing trek down the mountainside – straight into a primitive tribe of superstitious natives who had never before seen a white man or woman. Lost in Shangri-La recounts this incredible true-life adventure for the first time. A riveting work of narrative nonfiction that vividly brings to life an odyssey at times terrifying, enlightening, and comic, Lost in Shangri-La is a thrill ride from beginning to end." I don’t have time for or interest in novels. What I love are history books that read like novels. This is one of those books. Mitchell brings his reporters chops to the book, traveling around the world to talk to survivors and even the primitive tribesmen (did I mention they are cannibals?) who found them way back in 1945. This is just an incredible piece of storytelling and I hope we did the book justice, because I cannot recommend it highly enough. The Pundit Review Radio Podcast RSS feed can be found here. "Lost in Shangri-La"...a true story of survival...a rescue mission in WW2...Mitchell Zuckoff with some great history.  I find out what a "snood" is.    Interesting side history on Osama bin Laden.   Congressman Bruce Braley with a proposal to deal with sex abuse in the military.   Then, an Iowa congressional candidate, Christie Vilsack,  is in search of Iowa values.   Then,  Joel McDurmon writes "God versus Socialism"....hint:  God wins.
