E54 - Tyler Hubbard is Dancing in the Country with his 5 Foot 9 Wife and Family as a Solo Artist As the Georgia half of Florida Georgia Line, Tyler Hubbard spearheaded the shiny, good-time sound of bro-country in the 2010s, singing such era-defining hits as "Cruise," "Get Your Shine On," and "This Is How We Roll." Once he split with Brian Kelley in the early 2020s, Hubbard continued the legacy of FGL as a solo artist, modernizing their signature sunny sound on the 2022 number one hit "5 Foot 9," which was the first single pulled from his inaugural EP Dancin' in the Country. His eponymous full-length debut arrived the following year. A native of Monroe, Georgia, Hubbard attended college at Belmont University in Nashville, where he met Florida-born singer/songwriter Brian Kelley in a campus worship group. The pair eventually parlayed their friendship into a successful music career under the banner Florida Georgia Line. Emerging in 2010, the duo found mainstream success two years later with the release of their debut single, "Cruise," which became the first country song ever to receive diamond certification from the RIAA. The wide-ranging Grammy Award winners spent the rest of the decade at the forefront of the country-pop scene, releasing gold- and platinum-selling efforts like Here's to the Good Times, Anything Goes, and Dig Your Roots. In 2021, Hubbard and Kelley announced that they would be embarking on dual solo careers while remaining part of Florida Georgia Line. Hubbard's collaborations with Tim McGraw ("Undivided") and rapper Lathan Warlick ("My Way") appeared later that year. In early 2022, he signed with EMI Nashville and began work on his debut album, which embraced both his country and Christian roots, and saw him working with a host of regional hitmakers, including Ross Copperman, Keith Urban, and Thomas Rhett. "5 Foot 9," the first single from the sessions, appeared later that June, eventually climbing to number four on Billboard's Country Airplay charts. Hubbard followed the hit with Dancin' in the Country, his debut solo EP, in August. The set provided the seeds of Tyler Hubbard, the eponymous full-length debut that appeared in January 2023 and reached the upper echelons of the Billboard Country charts. Over 30 years in ANY business is impressive but in the world of songwriting, it's especially notable....even more so when that writer is still very much at the top of their game. Tommy Lee James was the "bigshot songwriter" our last guest, Ross Copperman, talked about. Ross grew up in the same town as Tommy Lee, and drew inspiration from his success as Ross embarked on his own music career.  But where Ross's country songwriting career has been largely over the last 8 years or so, Tommy Lee's got started back in the late 1980s. And since then, he's written hits for the likes of Brooks and Dunn, Reba,  Tim McGraw, and (*checks notes*) One Direction? Yep. He's not only consistent, he's versatile- not at all just staying in a country music lane. And he's got one of 5 new cuts on the latest Taylor Swift album- a song that was lost for 16 years. In this episode, Tommy Lee James gives a master class in not just achieving, but sustaining success... as well as the importance of proper song labeling when writing with future superstars. We had the pleasure of interviewing Manny Blu over Zoom audio! Country recording artist, Manny Blu will release a new EP, titled New Ink, on November 13, 2020. Manny’s debut single off the record, "Born To Ride," is now available and perfectly lays the groundwork for what is to come.Bringing to life a completely different side of the Montreal native, New Ink speaks directly to what Manny himself calls the "true heart" of the band's live shows: "There's more rock, more soul, and more volume this time around. It's bigger and louder, but it's still me. And more importantly, it's still fun."With his amplified mix of country twang and heavy rock & roll attitude, Manny brings his rebellious outlaw vibe to country music, creating an original sound that makes room for his blues and rock upbringing. While influenced by Brantley Gilbert, The Cadillac Three, and Jason Aldean, each of the five tracks heard on New Ink live in an edgy new space with rock-based instrumentals at the forefront. Recorded at OmniSound Studios in Nashville and produced by Aaron Eshuis, its rock-forward approach is fitting since the title stems from one of Manny's favorite bands, Mötley Crüe, and their album New Tattoo. One look at Manny, and it's no secret that he's a fan of tattoos-but to him New Ink means more than just thinking about the next one, for him, it's the release of his inner creative expression and his new sound to the world. The first single off of New Ink, "Born To Ride," is a track about finding that 'ride or die' person who will have your back as much as you have theirs—written by top songwriters Rhett Akins, Ross Copperman, and Josh Osborne, the track debuts today with a lyric video that provides a snapshot of Manny's acclaimed live shows.Consisting of four additional tracks telling the stories of real-life through love and heartbreak, Manny's upcoming EP displays substantial growth. Not only has 2020 already been a landmark year when it comes to streaming for the up-and-coming artist, it has also led to the development of global expansion with the addition of teams in the US, Canada, and the UK."Music is one of the most powerful elements to someone's life," said Manny when talking of the story behind the EP. "I think it can make what someone is going through ok, it can motivate, and empower people–so I tried to add a little piece of each of those things into New Ink."Manny continues to bring his vibe to country music–a sound he introduced with Leave It Like It Is, his debut record (2019) that earned him thousands of new fans and presented him with the opportunity to hit the road across Canada and the US. Last spring, Manny spent two months crossing Canada while opening for George Canyon's "Hit After Hit Tour" and then headlined his Canadian tour to close out the year. Earlier this spring, Manny crossed the US and Canada on another headlining tour. Fans can expect new show announcements in the coming months.ABOUT MANNY BLU:Manny Blu has always been a fighter. Years before he crisscrossed North America as an acclaimed country singer and a true road warrior-playing nightly shows in support of his 2019 debut album Leave It Like It Is, while also sharpening the larger-than-life sound that would fill his 2020 follow-up EP New Ink, Manny spent his days in the gym, training for a career as an MMA fighter.Traveling often to Nashville from his hometown of Montreal, he began piecing together a new record–one that showcased the lessons he learned on the road. Working with producer Aaron Eshuis and hit songwriters like Josh Osborne, Rhett Atkins, and Ross Copperman, Manny Blu emerged from Nashville's OmniSound Studios with New Ink. From "Born To Ride" to "Sink," these new songs tell relatable stories about love, loss, breakups, and everything in between, rooted in an amplified mix of country twang and heavy rock & roll attitude."I wanted the album to sound the way we do live," says Manny. "There's more rock, more soul, and more volume this time around. It's bigger and louder, but it's still me. And more importantly, it's still fun."Raised as a versatile athlete who played hockey, soccer, and football before kickstarting his MMA training at 16-years-old, Manny Blu hasn't lost that fighting spirit. If anything, he's gotten stronger, learning to roll with the punches and knock down any obstacles in his path. New Ink, with its hard-hitting hooks and country-rock edge, is the soundtrack to a career on the rise–and Manny Blu is ready to deliver a knockout blow. New Ink will be available on November 13, 2020.We want to hear from you! Jake Brown and Music, All Genres, Celebrating Book #50, “Behind the Boards”

dHarmic Evolution

I'm joined by the dynamic Jake Brown on the show today. A man who has written amazing books about the music business, and everything that goes into music writing and production. His books span across all genres, ranging from Country, RnB, Hip Hop, and Pop. Celebrating his 50th and latest book on the show with me, Jake Brown's ‘ Behind the Boards' features behind the scenes stories of country music's most notable artists, running from Tim McGraw, Clint Black, Vince Gill, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban and so many more. Jake moved into Nashville in 2003 with only two books published at the time. Nashville has been more than a home for him, as it has sparked the inspiration behind his multiple book series. It was here that Jake started focusing on writing his books based on the interviews he booked with songwriters like Jack Douglas, Eddie Kramer, and Bob Ezrin. In the span of 8 years, Jake was able to write 18 books. Jake was driven into depression mode when his dog Hanover died. Focused on how to best cheer himself up, Jake started writing his Behind the boards Nashville series. He began contacting Country song producers and writing the Nashville Songwriter. It was during his book series that Jake began interviewing and learning from songwriters and producers like Dave Cobb, Paul Waley, Shane McNally, Ross Copperman, Zach Crowl, Darius Rucker, Frank Rogers, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, and Nobert Putman. Different types of Country Song producers. While interviewing songwriters, producers, and singers. Jake noticed there are basically two types of country song producers. Track producers - These are producers who play all the instruments and work on the entire track in the home studios. Old School producers - these are producers who take a more traditional vibe of getting the entire band together for a weekend solely focused on producing music at the studio. Old school producers can go as far as knocking out a couple of number one hits in an afternoon. Jake tells the story of how Darius Rucker's friend and Brad Paisley's producer, Frank Rogers worked on a single album in one afternoon which went on to knock out a couple of number one hits in Nashville. There's a blend of both unique, short, and long-term relationships between singers, songwriters and producers in Nashville, and Country music as a whole. Jake, for one, has interviewed singer-producer duos that have a 10 - 30 year bond of working together. In his latest book, Jake also dives into interesting stories of individuals that started off trying to become singers, only to end up working and enjoying songwriting and production. And also how singers, songwriters, and producers build connections that end up being lifetime relationships from the most unlikely of scenarios, with one, in particular, being between Taylor Swift and Nathan Chapman. With over 300 number one hits included in his book and interviews, Jake dives into the behind the scenes backstories of Country's biggest stars in the last 20 - 30 years. How vulnerable they were when first starting out and how they've been able to grow, adapt, and overcome over time to become the superstars they are today. Music production is a diverse process and works differently for every producer. It could be a long process of listening to thousands of different songs and picking just 30. Or, it could be an overnight sensation of writing, drafting, and producing number one hits in just one night. The future of music. With technology being the driving force over so many industries today, Music has also been majorly affected, both positively and negatively by both technology and the internet. Streaming, Jake says, is the future of music. With 70% of record sales for weekly billboards coming from online streams and downloads, there's no denying the revenue powerhouse that the internet has proven to be. Ringtones used to be a proven phenomenon in providing revenue for singers, but those days are all but gone. There's also a trend of 360 types of deals where labels now get a piece of the live show revenues, a phenomenon that wasn't present in the past. If you want to know more about the diverse and changing art in music production, you can hop over to YouTube, where Jake has over 100 hundred videos where through the countless interviews, he gives a broader outlook of how hits are produced and distributed. Timestamps 03:58 How Jake started writing his book series 05:16 Working with different producers 08:09 What Jake's books entail 10:40 The diverse art of music production 15:15 How the music industry is taking shape 20:26 The business aspect of music production 24:30 Easy E and the Hip Hop side of music 25:51 What Jake hopes you'll get from the book 27:27 Jake's backstory and how it's connected to his production career. 31:41How music in the 70s and 80s was produced 34:48 Support community for different musicians 35:20 the underappreciated value of sound engineers 40:40 The growth of home studios 43:22 What's next for Jake Brown? 46: 58 Listen to “Connected” by James Kevin O'Connor Quotes It takes you on an entertainment roller coaster and still acts as a reference guide. The main role of my book series is to give you a 3D outlook into how country music is produced behind the scenes. The most important role of a songwriter in Nashville is to reflect the life of the audience through the music and lyrics. That's why so many songwriters in Nashville talk about getting their ideas while driving to work or during their everyday conversations. Through the interviews done, you get an amazing combination of the different ways that records come alive. And ultimately, the more music you listen to, the more educated you become.
