He talks about how much hate was in his heart until the words of Jesus inviting people to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Fouad says doing this began to change his heart. Born into an Amish family, Silicone Boone talks to Paul Cardall about exploring space and understanding our humanity with Silicone's album Reaches. Listening to his music and in our conversation, it's clear that his upbringing in an Anish community provided the songwriter with a large vocabulary and a mind of curiosity that flows in his poetic lyrics. Like Paul Simon, his lyrics roll off the tip of his tongue in beauty and mystery. There aren't a lot of artists with a story as unique and fascinating as that of rock musician Silicone Boone. For those that aren't aware of the sub-groups of the Amish, Old Order is the most traditional of the religious group, completely shunning the outside world. He spent 9 years of his childhood free from the conveniences of modern technology. So, imagine the world the young man discovered when Silicone's family left behind their heritage for a new faith. Today he hails from Campbellsville, KY as a husband and father. Silicone Boone's curiosity of our history as humans, the creation of the world, and our role in the vast cosmos are themes in his album, The Reaches, that I have on repeat. Abe Partridge received national and international recognition in early 2018 when he released his first official full-length release, Cotton Fields and Blood For Days, to rave reviews and substantial airplay on Americana radio. It landed Partridge a lengthy feature in The Bitter Southerner and the album was chosen to be one of their “Top 30 albums of 2018.” Ranging from the earthy to the surreal, from the spiritual light to the depths of depression, Partridge draws listeners in with a combination of southern gothic storytelling, dark humor, and gripping intensity. Partridge was on tour in the Netherlands and Belgium in November of 2018 when he met and bonded with David Ford, who says, “By the time you've witnessed ten thousand men take to the stage with an acoustic guitar to sing about their feelings, you can easily get to the impression that whether magnificent or mediocre they're all to some degree just recycling the schtick of Bob Dylan, James Taylor or any number of whiskey-sodden bluesmen. Then one rainy night in the Netherlands I saw Abe Partridge take to the stage with an acoustic guitar and it felt like the first time anybody ever thought to try it. He didn't just sing his songs, he set fire to them. It was brutal and tender and smart and angry and funny and brilliantly, uniquely authentic. I saw it as a magnificent reminder that great songs, delivered with honest intensity were what first made me want to do any of this in the first place.” When Partridge is not writing or touring, he is creating his folk art paintings, which now hang in art galleries around the Southeast and in the private collections of Tyler Childers, Mike Wolfe (American Pickers), and Rick Hirsch (Wet Willie). He painted the cover art for Charlie Parr's, Last Of The Better Days Ahead (Smithsonian Folkways). His monthly subscription-based art club has sustained him (and his wife and 3 children) during the Covid-19 pandemic. Partridge is also considered to be a storyteller and documentarian with his recently released "Alabama Astronaut" podcast along with host Ferrill Gibbs who podcasted for the Houston Chronicle and is currently the director of podcasting for the CBS affiliate KBTX in College Station, TX. The podcast is about Partridge's 2.5-year journey during the COVID-19 pandemic, discovering undocumented American music found in serpent-handling churches across Appalachia. The podcast was released on September 14, 2022, and on September 16th it hit the top 10 in Apple Podcast documentaries. American Songwriter Magazine said, “Abe Partridge has established himself as one of the most respected songwriters and visual folk artists in the southeast.” Partridge is currently putting the finishing touches on a new studio album "Love in the Dark" projected to be released in early 2023. She's cut hit after hit and sold out arenas across the country, all the while pulling off an impossible feat - recording songs with substance and meaning, and making them massive commercial successes. Jump in to hear the incredible music journey she's been through - from her start selling merch and getting her first opening act gig for Garth Brooks, to her early influences and the x factors that make her want to cut a song. Plus, don't forget to check out her exhibit currently at the Country Music Hall of Fame, “Martina McBride: The Power of Her Voice”.We know it's been a shorter season than usual, but after today's show, Pitch List is pressing pause for the moment. This week, Chris sits down with Grammy award-winning, absolute legend Jim Ed Norman! From his start in the 70s as a composer, arranger, conductor + player on The Eagles' iconic "Desperado" and "Hotel California" records, to his work as an A&R man / label head at Warner Nashville and Curb Records putting artists like Faith Hill and Randy Travis on the map, Jim Ed's career is one of the most eclectic we've seen. He was one of the first Nashville execs to work towards signing more Black artists in the 80s, and was also a pioneer of expanding the Americana movement in the 90s. To have a career that stretches over numerous decades is not an easy feat to achieve - and Jim Ed remains active in the music world today, earning his first Grammy just last year. He's currently reunited with The Eagles to lead their 70-piece orchestra on the Hotel California arena tour, so be sure to grab your tickets after you dive into this episode. Hello everyone, and welcome back to the festivalPass Stories podcast. We have a jam-packed episode for you this week as Pat interviews two special guests. It's our pleasure to introduce the Communications Director and Development Coordinator (respectively), Caine O'Rear and Cece Pless of Mobile Baykeeper. Mobile Baykeeper is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to protecting clean water, air, and keeping the community and environment of Mobile Bay Watershed and Coastal Alabama safe and healthy. Acknowledged as “North America's Amazon,” The Mobile-Tensaw Delta in Alabama is known for its diversity in it's ecosystems; also stretching to parts of Georgia, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Formed in 1997 (then West Bay Watch), Mobile Baykeeper is not just about their in-house team doing great work for the environment, but it's also about the efforts of thousands of volunteers and citizens over the years. Our guests can certainly speak to the good deeds of the Baykeeper's members. Caine is a native of Mobile and a bit of an outdoorsman himself. As a former editor-in-chief of American Songwriter Magazine, Caine is instrumental in being the bridge between the members of Mobile Baykeeper, and the public. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Cece started as an intern at Mobile Baykeeper after studying “the sustainability of international fisheries. Now, she helps the cause by recruiting sponsors and leading volunteering and fundraising events. Speaking of festivities, Mobile Baykeeper is recognized for its entertainment, as well as being hands-on in helping the environment. This is Festival Pass after all, and Baykeeper knows how to throw a lively event. Some of their annual events include Bay Bites (a food truck festival), Bay Inspiration (a showcase of the Baykeeper mission), and Bay Bash (a gala for their biggest sponsors and supporters). The pandemic has turned these events virtual, but we look forward to them returning live in the future. Caine and Cece explain how we all can individually do our part to help the environment, and the Mobile Baykeeper website includes an abundance of educational tools for those watching who want to get more involved in helping the planet. Make sure to purchase tickets for their upcoming events while they're still available, and assist the organization through donations. “We're helping these businesses but they're making the switch to more eco-friendly material from single-use plastic. What we're trying to do is offset some of that cost by giving them a lot of P.R…and generate some passive-aggressive peer pressure for other businesses in downtown Mobile to also make the switch.” - Caine O'Rear (Mobile Baykeeper) Catch the interview on Festival Pass Stories! https://festivalpass.com/stories You can find Caine and Cece on: Mobile Baykeeper's Website- https://www.mobilebaykeeper.org LinkedIn- https://www.linkedin.com/company/mobile-baykeeper/ Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/mobilebaykeeper/ Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/MobileBaykeeper/ Connect with Festival Pass! We had the pleasure of interviewing Heather Youmans over Zoom video! Tomorrow (April 23rd, 2021) Heather Youmans will share her new single A LITTLE CLOSER TO HAPPY. The music video bottles up good vibes, sunshine and that “California Dreaming” lifestyle. Music fans may recognize Heather Youmans from Fox’s new singing show “I Can See Your Voice,” which was watched by 4 million viewers this Fall/Winter. Heather Youmans' artist project is a commentary on happiness -- bringing together SoCal sunshine, good vibes and an optimistic point of view with pop/indie rock tunes reminiscent of HAIM and Sheryl Crow. A LITTLE CLOSER TO HAPPY is a SoCal-inspired soundtrack to the pursuit of happiness. People know Youmans as an “eternal optimist,” someone who always seems to find something to smile about. But, happiness isn’t perfect, and feeling happy all the time is a myth. Truth is, we all get a little sad sometimes. A LITTLE CLOSER TO HAPPY centers on one truth: “Achieving true happiness is a journey. Once you find it - no matter how big or small - hold onto it." Heather Youmans was born and raised in San Diego, just a 10 minute drive from the beach, so this song and video really sum up the California dream - from sunshine and contemplative beach sunsets to playing music around the campfire in flip flops (with a White Claw). About Heather Youmans: Heather Youmans is a Los-Angeles-based singer-songwriter, acclaimed vocalist, bassist and actress. The “essence of a Southern California singer/songwriter” (American Songwriter Magazine), Heather’s music spreads happiness. It's honest, uplifting and influenced by a range of dynamic women in music, including: HAIM, P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, Sheryl Crow, Sara Bareilles, Alanis Morissette, Fiona Apple, Joss Stone and Donna Missal. Through the years, she has written/recorded original music featured in Forbes, Parade Magazine and the LA Times, played on Top40 radio and in movies - including "Flicka 2" (alongside country music icon Clint Black), "Marley and Me 2” and "High Strung," premiering at TCL Chinese Theatre. She opened for Sting and the late Natalie Cole at a Unicef event, and has sung the national anthem solo for the LA Kings and 20,000 fans at Staples Center on New Years Eve. In Fall 2020, she released single SHINE--channeling good vibes, self-love and sunshine--and appeared as the "Tap Dancer" on FOX's new hit singing show "I Can See Your Voice." A LITTLE CLOSER TO HAPPY is the next chapter in her pursuit of happiness, as she continues to spread optimism and positive energy to fans. Current Day is the follow-up release to Martin Van Ruin’s critically-acclaimed debut, Every Man a King. The collective project from some familiar Chicago faces (members of Derek Nelson & The Musicians, Jenny Dragon, Planetsexploder), the new album sees the seven-piece band exploring increasingly modern sounds while building upon the ideas that led critic Jessica Hopper to write that their debut was “one of the best local albums of the year; a sprawling folk-rock work with vintage country and chamber elements … an album in a classic sense,” for American Songwriter Magazine to say that “fans looking for Chicago’s next Wilco may want to check out Martin Van Ruin,” and for the Chicago Sun-Times to write that “[t]he Bob Dylan and Neil Young comparisons are inescapable for this new folk rock supergroup.” The eight-song release was recorded over a series of sessions in 2017 at the Music Garage, and was recorded and engineered by Mike Lust (Tight Phantomz). Radio One Chicago airs live every Thursday night at 6p cst on WLUW-FM, 88.7f or WLUW.ORG
