This week Dan and Reid Isbell host music row legend Luke Laird out in God's Country. Luke shares an epic story of driving to write with Eric Church and having to stop on the way to buy a new truck so he'd make it to the write. Luckily for him, the song they wrote on that trip ended up being a Grammy-nominated track. The guys discuss where Luke's love for hunting with a recurve bow comes from and how another music row legend, Rhett Atkins, is his go-to for helping him track deer. Luke has over 20 No. 1 songs and is definitely the man behind several songs you know and love. I speak with hit songwriter and producer Barry Dean, who, with four #1 hits, many singles, and countless cuts, somehow manages to act like an earnest kid grateful for the chance to take his shot. His songs have been recorded by Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Maren Morris, Alison Krauss, Jon Pardi, Ingrid Michaelson, Brothers Osbourne, and many, many others. In one of the podcast's most illuminating guests to date, Barry discusses his unusual path to success — he didn't move to Nashville until he was 38 — and how his approach to collaboration has evolved through the years. He also digs into a couple of the details for some of his best known co-writes, like “Daydrinking” (Little Big Town) and “God and Country Music” (George Straight), and is quick to sing the praises of his frequent collaborators — Lori McKenna, Luke Laird, and Natalie Hemby, among others. This intro doesn't do justice to the caliber of the conversation we had. Barry is full of insight, wisdom and humility. You just gotta listen.

“God is so real to me in my music,” says Nashville songwriter Luke Laird. Luke shares how he went from growing up in rural Pennsylvania to writing songs with some of country music's biggest stars (like Carrie Underwood, Eric Church, and Kacey Musgraves), and how music is a gift that can touch us in ways that sometimes sermons can't. Quotes “There is music in just the quiet. When you go outside, it's never fully quiet. There's always a bird singing or you can hear a river flowing. I'm just so grateful that not only is He giving us His word, but He's giving us His creation.” - Luke Laird “God has been so faithful in so many ways throughout my life and just in music. In this episode, Laura and Tracy sit down with songwriter, producer and publisher Luke Laird. Luke talks the magic of writers' rounds, being reluctant to ask for help, letting go of jealousy and the nitty gritty details of his early publishing deals. Laura also shares the story of a pivotal moment that lead to her being a songwriter. Ferocious talent, wit, and sincere humility rarely come together like they do in Grammy winner Luke Laird. Since moving to Nashville from a small farming town in Pennsylvania, Laird has become one of country and pop's top songwriters and producers. The numbers are staggering: 52 radio singles –– 24 of which were Billboard No. 1 hits and 5 of which were in the Top 5 –– 2 Billboard No. 1 singles as a producer, and more than 125 released cuts fill his catalog. In four separate years, every single released that Laird wrote peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. He earned ACM Songwriter of the Year honors in 2015, and was named BMI Songwriter of the Year in 2012. As a producer, Laird has helped shape some of music's most critically acclaimed projects of the last decade. He co-produced Kacey Musgraves' 2013 debut, Same Trailer, Different Park, which garnered Grammy honors for Best Country Album and an ACM Album of the Year win. In 2015, he returned to the studio with Musgraves to co-produce her triumphant sophomore release, Pageant Material. Laird earned his second Grammy for Best Country Song with Musgraves' “Space Cowboy” in 2019. He also has producer credits on Thomas Rhett, Ingrid Michaelson, Brett Eldredge, Steve Moakler, Everette, Kassi Ashton, Anna Vaus and more. A slew of Grammy, ACM, CMA, and other nominations line Laird's resume, which also includes six CMA Triple Play Awards, four NSAI “Songs I Wish I'd Written” Awards, the 2012 BMI Country Song of the Year trophy for Rodney Atkins' “Take a Back Road,” and more. His list of No. 1 singles reads like a carefully curated playlist of soulful contemporary country: “Hard To Forget” (Sam Hunt); “Fast” and “I See You” (Luke Bryan); “Head Over Boots” (Jon Pardi); “T-Shirt” (Thomas Rhett); “Gonna” and “Hillbilly Bone” (Blake Shelton); “Talladega,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” and “Drink In My Hand” (Eric Church); “American Kids” (Kenny Chesney); “Sunshine & Whiskey” (Frankie Ballard); “One of Those Nights” (Tim McGraw); “Downtown” (Lady Antebellum); “Somebody's Heartbreak” (Hunter Hayes); “Beat This Summer” (Brad Paisley); “Pontoon” (Little Big Town); “You” (Chris Young); “A Little Bit Stronger” (Sara Evans); “Take A Back Road” (Rodney Atkins); and “Temporary Home,” “Undo It,” “So Small,” and “Last Name” (Carrie Underwood). Other artists who have recorded Laird-penned songs represent a jaw-dropping grab bag of genres: George Strait, Maren Morris, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Brandy Clark, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Steve Moakler, Sister Hazel, Ingrid Michaelson, Ashley Monroe, Sam Hunt, Angaleena Presley, Nikki Lane, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Sheryl Crow, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Ne-Yo, Neal McCoy, Amy Grant, and many more. Laird recently released his own record, Music Row, that offers an intimate look into his journey from Hartstown to Nashville. The first-ever record from one of music's most trusted creators and collaborators, Music Row is a songwriter's story, traversing childhood, grief, addiction, family, and the community he loves. The songs are deeply personal and sometimes raw, all delivered by the songwriter himself. Today, Laird writes for and co-owns Nashville-based publishing and management company Creative Nation with his wife, Beth. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's truly amazing how one simple, polite gesture can utterly change a person's life. As a teenager, songwriter Luke Laird took a family vacation to Nashville. And even though he was already deeply interested in music, he had no idea somebody like him, a young man from Pennsylvania, could do it for a living...until the writer of one of country music's most iconic songs spent a few moments talking to him following a show the family attended at the legendary Bluebird Café. Without that simple gesture of accessibility, which that writer has probably given a thousand times, Eric Church might never have had songs like Give Me Back My Hometown, Talladega or Drink in My Hand. Carrie Underwood might never have recorded So Small, or Thomas Rhett, T-shirt, Jon Pardi, Head over Boots. Kacey Musgraves might never have won a Grammy for her album Same Trailer, Different Park. And the Nashville songwriting community might never have had one of its most collaborative, creative and encouraging members. But thankfully, That writer did. Who was it? And what's the rest of Luke's story? Give this month's episode a listenSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Since moving to Nashville from Hartstown, Pennsylvania, Luke Laird has penned and produced hits for artists including Eric Church, Kacey Musgraves, Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, Brad Paisley, and many others, earning 24 No. 1 hits and two Grammys along the way. Instead of spending too much time in the history and story of his hit songs, Luke answers some of Brandon's questions on how to get a hit. Why not ask the guy that watched Brooks and Dunn write some of their hits in person? From speed, the track guy, the influences of rap in today's country music, and even some of the specifics and nuances of lyrics that major artists won't cut. His first and ever most personal album Music Row is a bit of a timestamp from where Luke was and where he currently is. From sobriety, past friendships, joy, pain, love. Music Row touches on the journey of one man that feels relatable and has you evaluating your humanity. American Songwriter Podcast Network

Not everyone in the music industry has known that's where they wanted to be at an early age. In the case of Beth Laird, a forced internship with her childhood nanny, resulted in finding a life-long passion and drive for music and artists. Beth is the CEO and founder of Creative Nation Music and has been turning Nashville on its head for years. Her perspective on mindset and courage is truly amazing. It was her courage to make shifts and try new things that pushed her to greater and greater heights in the music industry. That same courage helped her to step into her own publishing company when she realized that she was not meant to serve the masses. The experiences she gained while working with country music legends helped her to start and grow her own publishing company. She now focuses more energy on fewer people and is dedicated to helping them build the life and careers that they love. Creative Nation has had 17 #1 hit songs (so far!) and has had songs recorded by top artists such as Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, John Legend, Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum, Blake Shelton, and many others. Creative Nation's roster includes Lori McKenna, Alec Bailey, Barry Dean, Bear Rinehart, Luke Laird, Casey Brown, Jonathan Hutcherson, Kassi Ashton, Steve Moakler, Travis Wood, and Tyler Johnson. She credits her faith and her ongoing relationship with her therapist for helping her to put into place a super positive workplace culture. Her staff, and the artists and writers that she works with, are all like family and they have very specific guidelines for anyone new coming into their sphere. Listen as she shares her story in the music industry. Everything that she has been through, all the good and the bad, have led her to an amazing place and she is so excited to share her dream with her family. We even touch on women in the music industry and her thoughts and the disparity in success between genders. While she thinks we can do better, she also has a powerful way of dealing with that disparity. Listen in to learn more. Show Highlights: [01:37] Beth has had an amazing run in Music City. Can you be both a disciplined, focused business leader and a deeply creative person? For us here at StoryBrand, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, the worlds of creatives and business leaders overlap more than we might assume. If you’re leading a business, you need to embrace your creativity. When you do, you’ll unlock levels of innovation and inspiration in your work that will give you a competitive advantage. And anyone who does creative work needs to focus and master their industry so their work gets the attention it deserves. To help us as business leaders understand the creative process better, Donald Miller invited Luke Laird to join this episode of the Building a StoryBrand podcast. He’s a Grammy-award-winning producer and songwriter who’s penned 23 number-one hits for major country artists like Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Eric Church, and Tim McGraw. Whether you’re a business leader trying to embrace your creativity or an aspiring artist trying to make it, here are three takeaways from Luke Laird about the creative process. He also brought his guitar along to showcase some of his work, so make sure you give this episode a listen! http://buildingastorybrand.com/46
To call this songwriter's work profound is a gross understatement. His name is practically synonymous with the term "country radio." Just this past year he earned his 23rd #1 Country Single on the Billboard Charts with Luke Bryan's "Fast". A few of his other notable collaborations include Carrie Underwood's "Last Name", Kenny Chesney's "American Kids", and Blake Shelton's "Hillbilly Bone (feat. Trace Adkins)." Raised in Pennsylvanian countryside, and now based in Nashville with his family, this writer has become one of the most respected and sought-after songwriters in modern country music. And The Writer Is...Luke Laird! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Bobby is joined by Luke Laird. Bobby talks with Luke about the stories behind some of his 23 No.1 including songs for Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan and Eric Church. Hey there! I'm Kelly Sutton. We are so glad you’re here for another Inside Music Row! We’ve got plenty of entertainment news for you this week, so let’s get started! Even though Kenny Chesney is taking some time off, he’s still hard at work, now co-producing his 16th studio album. He’s working hard collecting great songs and pushing the boundaries without betraying his true self. You can see part of that in the new single “American Kids,” written by Rodney Clawson, Luke Laird, and Shane McAnally. Kenny says the song ‘just grabs you and holds on, but even more importantly…it feels really good.” Look for Kenny to hit the road again in 20-15 with tons of new material. Randy Houser recently helped open a new Operation Homefront Village in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He helped cut the ribbon for the facility, which helps wounded military service members and their families. Randy also performed for the group and visited with them before a special cookout. Thomas Rhett teamed up with his father Rhett Akins to support a charity in their hometown. Their performance together raised over 40-thousand dollars for Great Strides Valdosta in honor of their cousin Sophie, who has been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Sammy Kershaw is honoring his late friend and mentor George Jones with the release of a new album dedicated entirely to the “Possum.” The project includes a total of fourteen tracks, including renditions of some of George’s biggest hits like “White Lightning” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” Also included are two new tracks that were inspired by the legend, plus a special “Near You” duet with Georgette Jones. Look for “Do You Know Me? – A Tribute to George Jones” to hit stores July 22nd. Now it's time to go “Inside The Song.” John Oates met his songwriting match when he was teamed up with hit writer Craig Wiseman. John recently shared a fun story about how they wrote “Lose It In Louisiana” together, which is on his latest “Good Road To Follow” project.
Join us this week as we honor Veterans Day and welcome the country pop singer songwriter, Ashliegh Lisset. Hailing from Dallas, TX., Since the age of twelve, Ashliegh has had aspirations of becoming a professional recording and performing artist. It was a tragic life experience that lead her to music. At the age of eleven, she received devastating news. Her father, an American Soldier, lost his life in combat while serving a second tour for Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was dealing with this tragic loss that she found comfort in music. Quickly realizing life was too short not to pursue her dream. When asked about her father, Ashliegh replies, “My dad was a passionate soldier, and he died doing something he believed in. In a sense…that’s how I feel about my music.” Ashliegh’s passion, hard work, and determination is beginning to pay off. On August 6, 2013, she released her debut single “Kill The Headlights” written by Luke Laird, Hillary Lindsey, and Carrie Underwood. Luke Laird is one of Nashville's hottest songwriters. After plenty of number one hits under his belt, he really feels like he is just now hitting his stride. Kelly Lynn sat down with Luke to talk about his career and what it's taken for him to succeed.
We kick off another Inside Music Row with the mention of Keith Urban - Keith is set to throw a massive party here in Nashville next month to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. This year's "All For The Hall" theme is "Rebeles and Renegades...The Outlaws are In." Alan Jackson is mentioned next as he will release his "Precious Memories Volume II" next week. Up next is George Jones as his final farewell has so many other performers involved now - look for Garth Brooks, Kid Rock, Kenny Rogers, and Charlie Daniels to perform at the sold-out November 22nd show at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. Craig Morgan is mentioned next as he will treat Music City Marathoners to a post-race show with special guest Sarah Darling. Finally, we go Inside the Song with Luke Laird to hear about a song he co-wrote called "Pontoon" which Little Big Town took all the way to number one.
Transitioning from successful songwriter to new producer can be daunting, to say the least. However, we all need to spread our wings in order to grow. Luke Laird is embracing the challenge of moving into the producer's chair with the debut album from Kacey Musgraves. Luke co-produced this project along with Kacey and Shance McAnally, which is set to be released this Spring. We had a chance to talk with Luke about that transition, and why it's important to keep challenging yourself.
Luke Laird has been a fixture in the Nashville songwriting community for years now, but that comes with having written nine number one hits for some of country music's biggest stars. Now Luke and his wife Beth have created a new company called Creative Nation which is home to some of the top songwriters and producers in town. We had a chance to check in with Luke to hear about his experience as a songwriter and why it's something he's very passionate about.
Broadcast Music, incorporated hostd their sixtieth black tie dinner and country awards show at their Nashville building on Music Row. Dallas Davidson and Luke Laird were both honored as songwriters of the year in a night that was dedicated to the newest BMI Icon...Tom T. Hall. Check it out.
Hometown boy Chris Young has done quite well for himself since winning the Nashville Star in 2006. Now with three albums under his belt, he's had a string of five consecutive number one hits. We caught up with Chris and co-writer and co-writer Luke Laird at a celebration for his latest single to take the top spot on the charts. Here's Kelly at the newly remodeled ASCAP lounge.
