*A time when musicians were viewed as revolutionaries and revolutionaries might be considered pop culture icons   *Crate digger / rock critc / reissue producer and archivist extraordinaire Pat Thomas came to the Bureau to tell how black power intersected with counterculture and influenced folk, rock, soul and jazz in the years between 1965 and 1975.   *We hear astonishing stories from his book 'Listen, Whitey: The Sights and Sounds of Black Power' and some amazing sounds from the accompanying album issued by Light in the Attic including tracks by John and Yoko, Dylan, The Watts Prophets and Elaine Brown.   *And we learn how the Black Power Movement, and the Black Panthers in particular, moved from militant political action to community activism whilst interacting with the wider counterculture - and, though bad things were done, how many of their adherants used a pencil, a book of poetry, a typewriter or a musical instrument to bring about change beyond violent revolution.   #counterculture #rockagainstracism #backpanthers #blackpower #angeladavis #racism #thebeats #oakland #tomothyleary #activism #socialism #revolution #rockrevolution #eldridgecleaver #bobdylan #motown #johnandyoko #thewattsprophets

After many of her comrades are killed, imprisoned, and forced into exile, Elaine Brown rises the ranks to be tapped as the first and only female leader of the Black Panther Party. Like other vocal women within the Party, she faced rampant sexism. But violence within the Party and whispers of her being a government informant also threatened her ambitions to save and revitalize the Black Panther Party. Pickleball. It's got nothing to do with pickles – it's a sport. It has been described as a combination of tennis, badminton and table tennis. Picture a small plastic ball soaring through the air that you need to bat back to your partner, or partners. 匹克球。这与泡菜无关——这是一项运动。它被描述为网球、羽毛球和乒乓球的结合。想象一个小塑料球在空中翱翔,您需要将其击回给您的一个或多个伙伴。Many Brits are listening to their inner athlete and picking up this racket game. In the UK, there are currently around 7,000 players, according to Pickleball England. But the association aims to have more than 25,000 players by 2025 and is even attempting to get the sport played as part of promotion for the 2028 Olympics. How exactly do you play this game? Well, it can be played indoors or outdoors and it can be played as a singles or doubles game. There are a few easy-to-understand rules. The ball is served underhand and should be batted diagonally across the court. On the first two hits, the ball has to bounce, but after that, players are free to volley. To win a point, the defending side must miss the ball. So, why is it popular? Firstly, it appears to be a game for all ages. The ball is lightweight because it's full of holes. This means that, when batting, there is much less impact on the body than when hitting a tennis ball, for example. Elaine Brown, who is in her 50s and a regular pickleball player, told news organisation, The Guardian why she loves the sport. "It's good exercise, it's strategic, it can be as hard or as easy as you want it to be, and most of the time it's just good fun." And the social aspect and low-impact nature of the game has been attracting players worldwide, creating a blossoming community of pickleball enthusiasts, such as celebrities Bill Gates and Leonardo DiCaprio. So, if you fancy picking it up, find your local pickleball court and give it a go!

Todays episode is with former chairman and the first and only woman to lead the Black Panther Party, Sister Elaine Brown. Elaine is a activist, writer, speaker, and songwriter known for her sharp wit and sheer intellectual voracity, but we all began somewhere, and Elaine is no exception. Hailing from the streets of North Philadelphia, Elaine had a bit of trouble finding herself early on, some would call it an identity crisis. Her single mother, wanting to create a better life for her daughter, sent her to predominantly white schools, but once back home, Elaine found herself amongst the struggling denizens of a segregated north Philadelphia, allowing Elaine the experience, but not yet the words, of what it meant to be Black in America. An accomplished musician, Elaine fled to Los Angeles to pursue songwriting,  but found herself at a Black panther rally within days of the assassination of Martin Luther King, despondent with the state of affairs in the country. Making her way up the ranks of the Black Panther Party, it was actually her songwriting that got her noticed by David Hilliard, the Party's Chief of Staff, who made her song “the Meeting” from her debut album, “Seize the Time” the party's official anthem. Her songs were also noticed by party Chairman and Elaine's future lover, Huey P Newton, who placed Elaine at the top of the Party's Leadership when he fled to Cuba in the 1970s to escape persecution.  While with the Panthers, Elaine helped set up many of the initiatives the party is known for, like it's free breakfast For Children program and its Free Bussing to Prisons program, with prison reform becoming a lifelong pursuit for her.Since formally leaving the party due it's patriarchal structure, Elaine has made activism, education, and revolution her life's work. She's the author of two books, A Taste of Power, her memoir, and The Condemnation of Little B, a nonfiction book charting the prosecution of young Michael Lewis, a 14-year-old sentenced to life in prison for a crime Elaine believes he did not commit. After founding multiple non-profits rooted in social justice, now at 78, Elaine is CEO of Oakland and the World enterprises, a non-profit dedicated to launching and sustaining for-profit businesses for cooperative-ownership by the formerly incarcerated, and others facing monumental social barriers to economic survival. Their multi-million dollar affordable housing complex in Oakland is slated to break grown in late 2021. And her album, Seize the Time was just re-released on Black Forum records, a division of Motown. In this episode, Elaine and I discuss her bifurcated childhood in 1950s North Philadelphia, what it means to be seen for the first time, the way language shapes our sense of self, how the Black Panther Party used fashion and aesthetics as a signaling device, and so so so so much more. This episode is a history lesson, a sketch comedy, and manual on the vicissitudes that accompany a life of service and continual self-discovery. I hope you're sitting down somewhere where no one can see the faces you're about to make as you listen to this incredible conversation. Judas and the Black Messiah has stimulated more interest in Illinois Deputy Chairman, Fred Hampton. As a native of Fred's hometown of Maywood, Illinois, Dr. Sherrod adds additional "local color" to Fred's awe-inspiring background with the hope that more people will come to know the truth. People who quest for liberty and justice all over the world revere Fred Hampton. Love for the people, as we clearly see today, is in and of itself a revolutionary act. Fred was a beautiful human being--loved by many across the racial spectrum. If you don't know about him, by all means check out the movie, Judas and the Black Messiah, this podcast, and some of the many books written that contain information about this forever young real life Black Panther King. (Shout out to Ryan Coogler, whose integrity and brilliance in filmmaking is unsurpassed, for being a producer of this film.) Long life the beautiful spirit of Chairman Fred Hampton. Here are some resources about Fred and the Panthers: The Essence of Fred Hampton: An Attempt to Capture the Spirit of a Young Man Who Influenced So Many and to Pass It On to Those Who Didn't Have the Opportunity to Meet Him, edited by William Hampton. This is a wonderful, but hard to find, collection of thoughts on Fred Hampton by people who knew him. This booklet was lovingly compiled by Fred's brother, the late William “Bill” Hampton. (Years ago, I saw a copy of it at the Oak Park, Illinois library!) The Assassination of Fred Hampton, by Jeffrey Haas (Jeff Haas was one of the attorneys who waged a years long legal battle in civil court on behalf of Fred's family, Panther Mark Clark's family, and others, after they were assassinated. The case, after an 18 month trial and then an appeal, finally culminated in a settlement in 1983.) Fred Hampton: 20th Commemoration by The December 4th Committee http://peopleslawoffice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Hampton.-20th-Anniversary-Booklet-1989.pdf. This is a very informative commemoration booklet about Fred Hampton that was produced 20 years after the assassination by people who knew him. People's Law Office (This is the law office that represented Fred Hampton and, later, his family.) The website contains a cornucopia of information on the Panthers and the legal work the Law Office did on behalf of Panther members. https://peopleslawoffice.com/the-assassination-of-fred-hampton-a-short-peoples-history/ Black Against Empire by Joshua Bloom and Waldo E. Martin, Jr. This is considered one of the most comprehensive works written about the Black Panthers by an outsider with a scholarly interest in the different chapters of the Party. From the Bullet to the Ballot: The Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party and Racial Coalition in Chicago by Jakobi Williams. This book was written by another Panther scholar—a professor who grew up in Chicago with an interest in, and, therefore, an emphasis on, the Chicago Chapter of the Party. The Black Panthers Speak edited by Philip S. Foner. This is an early compilation of speeches by Panther Party members. Revolutionary Suicide by Huey P. Newton. This is an autobiography of Huey P. Newton, who, along with Bobby Seale, founded the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California in 1966. A Taste of Power: A Black Woman's Story by Elaine Brown. Men are men.... They think I am trying to take power from them. The black man must step     39.    forward, but that doesn't mean the black woman must step back."   40.    QUESTION: Is this the real reason more black women haven't run? (only other black woman was Carol Moseley Braun from Il in 2004)   41.    About her legacy, she said, “I want to be remembered as a woman … who dared to be a catalyst of change.” (Obama?)   42.    Famous Quotes:   43.    "Tremendous amounts of talent are lost to our society just because that talent wears a skirt."   44.    "The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, 'It's a girl'."   45.    "In the end, anti-black, anti-female, and all forms of discrimination are equivalent to the same thing - anti-humanism."   46.    Conclusion: In our lifetime we saw THE MOST successful path for black advancement. Politics. Only 36 years from Shirley to Obama.   47.    Shirley Chisholm was an underappreciated legend and icon.   48.    Other Comments?   49.    Meanwhile...the Black Power Movement is falling apart! (2nd major shift)   50.    1971-1972 the Panthers split into different camps. Huey vs Eldrigdge   51.    They went "Hatfield vs McCoy" and started retaliatory assassinations.   52.    H. Newton, Stokely Carmichael, and Bobby Seale   54.    H Rap Brown sentenced for an attack on a New York City bar?!?!   55.    Currently serving a life sentence for murder after shooting of two Sheriff's deputies in 2000.   56.    He was known for taking over SNCC after Stokely and his autobiography, Die Nigger Die!   57.    Probably most famous for saying, "violence is as American as cherry pie” -and- "If America don't come around, we're gonna burn it down."   58.    QUESTION: Was the decline of the BPM more internal (reliance on the gun and violence), external (black people lost interest) -OR- did black people choose to go the "integration" route?   59.    Conclusion: The BPM had a great message: Pride, Self-reliance, and education. But, I think they were too extreme.   60.    Other Comments:   61.    Music: 1972 Top Singles   #1 Roberta Flack    The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face #2 Gilbert O’Sullivan    Alone Again (Naturally) #3 Don McLean    American Pie #4 Nilsson    Without You #5 Sammy Davis Jr.    Candy Man #6 Joe Tex    I Gotcha #7 Bill Withers    Lean On Me #8 Mac Davis    Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me #9 Melanie    Brand New Key #10 Wayne Newton    Daddy Dont You Walk So Fast #11 Al Green    Let’s Stay Together #12 Looking Glass    Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl) #13 Chi-Lites    Oh Girl #14 Gallery    Nice To Be With You #15 Chuck Berry    My Ding-A-Ling #16 Luther Ingram    If Loving You Is Wrong I Don’t Want To Be Right #17 Neil Young    Heart Of Gold #18 Stylistics    Betcha By Golly, Wow #19 Staple Singers    I’ll Take You There #20 Michael Jackson    Ben #21 Robert John    The Lion Sleeps Tonight #22 Billy Preston    Outa-space #23 War    Slippin’ Into Darkness #24 Hollies    Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress) #25 Mouth and MacNeal    How Do You Do #26 Neil Diamond    Song Sung Blue #27 America    A Horse With No Name #28 Hot Butter    Popcorn #29 Main Ingredient    Everybody Plays The Fool #30 Climax    Precious And Few   62.    Vote: Best Single, __________________________________   63.    1972 Albums   64.    Jan - There's a Riot Going' On - Sly & the Family Stone   65.    Jan - Black Moses - Isaac Hayes   66.    Mar - Solid Rock - The Temptations   67.    Mar - Let's Stay Together - Al Green   68.    May - First Take - Roberta Flack   69.    Jun - A Lonely Man - The Chi-Lites   70.    Jul - Still Bill - Bill Withers   71.    Oct - Super Fly Soundtrack - Curtis Mayfield   72.    Nov - All Directions - The Temptations   73.    Dec - I'm Still In Love With You - Al Green   74.    Vote: Best Album, __________________________________   75.    Key Artist - Diana Ross (@28): Singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. Born and raised in Detroit.   76.    Became famous as the lead singer the Supremes, the best charting girl group in history. With twelve number-one hit singles. ("Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Stop! In the Name of Love", "You Can't Hurry Love", "You Keep Me     77.    Hangin' On", "Love Child", and "Someday We'll Be Together", etc...)   78.    The movie dream girls was inspired by the group   79.    She also did a few big films: Lady Sings the Blues, Mahogany, The Wiz, etc...   80.    Question: Here's my problem with The Boss. Mary Wilson was the heart and soul of the Supremes. Florence Ballard was the best singer. Diana was what?   81.    Conclusion: The Supremes were deliberately glamorous, because Gordy wanted all of Motown to be crossover artists. Beyonce has real game, I'm not convinced Diana wasn't just hyped up.    82.    Other Comments:   83.    Key Artist - Al Green (@26): singer, songwriter and record produce. Born in AR, grew up in Michigan, discovered in Memphis.   84.    Kicked out of the house when his very religious daddy caught him listening to Jackie Wilson.   85.    Quote: "I also listened to Mahalia Jackson, all the great gospel singers. But the most important music to me was those hip-shaking’ boys: Wilson Pickett and Elvis Presley. I just loved Elvis Presley. Whatever he got, I went out and bought."   86.    Started out in 1967, flashed in 1971 with the album, "Al Green Gets Next to You", PEAKED in 1972 with 2 albums - "Let's Stay Together" & "I'm Still in Love with You", and capped 1973 with the lp "Call Me", a critically acclaimed "Masterpiece!"   87.    Basically, everything we love about Al was dropped in that 3-year window.   88.    1974 he was born again   89.    Soon after that his "girlfriend" dumped boiling grits on him in the bathtub before shooting and killing herself. (with his gun!?)   90.    By 1976, he was ready to go gospel.   91.    His longtime producer, Willie Mitchell (the guy who discovered him and crafted his music), passed on doing gospel music. (Bounced check story)   92.    1977, he dropped "The Belle Album", his 12th. Rolling Stone magazine said, "We may someday look back on The Belle Album as Al Green’s best"   93.    Question: Just an observation really. This is the 3rd major shift in 1972. Al didn't make political or activist music. Some said he was the last great "Soul Man". In 1971 Marvin asked, what's going on. During 1972, in the middle of war protests, Watergate, an     94.    election, civil rights protests, the Panthers shooting up the streets, Al Green made LOVE ok again.   95.    Other Comments:   96.    Vote: Key Artists, ________________________________   97.    Movies   98.    Lady Sings the Blues: Based on Lady Sings the Blues by Billie Holiday   99.    Starring: Diana Ross (@28), Billy Dee Williams (@35), Richard Pryor (@32)   100.    Blacula: important because it was a successful black horror film   101.    Buck and the Preacher: important for casting blacks as leads in a western and was the first film Sidney Poitier directed   102.    Super Fly: 4th Major shift (The streets are talking)   103.    Priest is done with the clothes, the cars, the drugs, the money, and the white women.   104.    But, his partner, Eddie isn’t.   105.    Quote (Eddie talking to Priest): "You're gonna give all this up? 8-Track Stereo, color T.V. in every room, and can snort a half a piece of dope everyday? That's the American Dream, nigga! Well, ain't it? Ain't it?"   106.    Curtis Mayfield (@30) wrote and produced the AMAZING soundtrack.   107.    Starring: Ron O’Neal (@35), Carl Lee (@46), Sheila Frazier (@24)   108.    At the time of its release, lots of black folks didn't like what Super Fly was representing.   109.    Quote from the Hollywood NAACP branch: “we must insist that our children are not exposed to a steady diet of so-called black movies that glorify black males as pimps, dope pushers, gangsters, and super males.”   110.    The filmmakers (White producer / black director) say they wanted to show the negative and empty aspects of the drug subculture.   111.    Regardless, Super Fly landed BIG TIME with the "post-Civil Rights" generation.   112.    They thought Eddie spoke the gospel.   113.    Quote (Eddie talking to Priest): " I know it's a rotten game, but it's the only one The Man left us to play. That's the stone, cold truth."   114.    Question: Ultimately, what is the legacy of Superfly?   115.    Conclusion: I really enjoyed the movie. "I wasn't prepared to be anybody's mother. I was prepared to be a revolutionary." - Elaine Brown Welcome to season five of Audio Stage, a very special season for us. For this season, we collaborate with Footscray Community Arts Centre to bring you a series of conversations by black women about belonging and self. We have wanted to do this for a long time. We wanted to talk about race. We wanted to talk about Australia's racism. We wanted to talk about dispossession, about family and intergenerational trauma, about microaggressions, about what it means to be an artist when your voice, the fact of your voice, is in and of itself a danger to the status quo. We also knew that we wanted to listen, not talk. So here we are. In the next five episodes, we are listening in on some huge, important conversations about what it means to belong in a society that perhaps never wanted us in the first place. We record from a country in which so many of us are constantly reminded that we do not belong here. "For me, being black, being a migrant, my parents migrating to Australia out of need, and personally having that same experience... Not wanting to speak my language for a long time, because I just wanted to speak English, like everybody else in school. I had to re-teach myself, I'm still in that process, of the language that I've lost. I don't think it landed for me until I was much older - when you're around your people, and you have that mirroring moment, and you just realise what it is that you've subconsciously, or consciously, left behind. For survival." - Alia Gabres In our first episode, we are bringing you the conversation between Melbourne spoken word artist and cultural producer Alia Gabres, and former Black Panther Party member Elaine Brown, now an author and activist. This precious, beautiful conversation was a part of the program at Women of the World Festival Melbourne at FCAC in March 2017, and we recorded it there. Discussed in this episode: being a mother vs being a revolutionary, how words are beautiful but actions are supreme, how every woman needs her own football team, wanting to be white, the mirroring moment, you can't be a vegan in the 'hood, clicktivism, white supremacy, parenting in the Black Panther Party, not knowing how to braid your daughter's hair, and how revolutionary women don't cook. "White supremacy is not really the issue. All white people are not our enemies, obviously. Because this is a sophist concept, where you say, 'you know what, if the white man is my oppressor, then all white people must be aligned with that'. That is not true. We learnt, ultimately, class analysis. But as a child, I grew up knowing that black people were poor, and I don't want to be poor." - Elaine Brown You can find out more about Elaine on her website, or follow her on Twitter. Alia Gabres tweets here, while you can read more about her work here or watch her spoken word poetry on YouTube. This season of Audiostage was created in partnership with Footscray Community Arts Centre as part of WOW – Women of the World Festival Melbourne, delivered in association with Southbank Centre London.

With groups in Germany, Dorset, 40 thousand children and around 400 schools involved across the UK and Ireland and a remit – if you might call it that…. of growing, your own food….. this is literally a whirlwind of a conversation with 2 of the voices a little more behind the scenes, maybe, that might just encourage you to think that little bit differently doing something that can only make you smile. About the time I ran for the Chabot College student president while serving as the newspaper's Editor-in-Chief, my rousing campaign speech, the college's fry cook/bookie and his advice for taking the Cowboys even though back-up QB Gary Hogeboom was subbing for the great Danny White, or was it Randy White? Also, in the news, what's might happen to Oakland Councilmember Desley Brooks after an allegation was reported last week that she assaulted former Black Panther icon Elaine Brown at a restaurant in Oakland? Probably nothing, but the allegation brings to light Brooks' notorious behavior over the past 14 years in office.
