In this episode, Sarah Short explores the intersection of coaching ethics and marketing. She breaks down how coaches can market their services with integrity while still effectively communicating the value they provide to potential clients.Key Highlights:Ethical Marketing Defined: Good marketing crosses no core values and promises no miracles. It simply says "I see you and the thing you're struggling with, and I can help."Marketing vs. Coaching: While coaching focuses on the individual client determining direction and outcomes, marketing focuses on addressing specific problems that can be resolved through coaching.Focus on Outcomes, Not Process: People buy outcomes, not processes. Effective marketing communicates the transformation clients can expect rather than just explaining how coaching works. Two Critical Assumptions: Ethical marketing assumes both the coach and client will show up as their best selves. The coach brings professionalism and presence, while the client brings enthusiasm and commitment to the process. The Importance of Contracting: Clear communication about expectations in initial client conversations separates ethical marketers from those who overpromise and underdeliver.Sarah reminds us that ethical coaches identify problems that can genuinely be resolved through coaching, allowing them to market with honesty and integrity about the potential outcomes of their work.Have you enjoyed this episode?Find out more and take the FREE quiz at: https://thecoachingrevolution.com/Join the FREE Facebook group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/buildacoachingbusiness

In this insightful episode, Sarah Short tackles one of the most common objections from coaches: the resistance to identifying potential clients by job title. Sarah explains the critical difference between coaching delivery (where the focus is on the person) and marketing a coaching business (where specificity is essential).Key Points:Coaching vs. Client Acquisition: These require completely different skill sets. Most coaches are trained in delivery skills but not in effective marketing. The Importance of Job Titles: Without specific job titles, coaches cannot proactively find their audience on platforms like LinkedIn. Vague descriptions like "I work with people who feel stuck" are ineffective for marketing.Precision in Marketing: Knowing your potential client's industry, sector, and job title allows you to create targeted content that reaches the right people intentionally rather than by chance. The "Coaching is About the Person" Fallacy: While coaching delivery focuses on the individual, building a business requires identifying who you're trying to reach.Real-World Success: Sarah shares examples from The Coaching Revolution mentors who all have tightly defined target audiences, including Helen Clare who focuses specifically on menopause coaching for school leaders.Overcoming Fear of Narrowing: Choosing a job title doesn't limit opportunities—it helps your message reach the right people. "Brilliance is irrelevant if no one knows you exist."Sarah concludes that knowing your audience's job title isn't just about finding them—it's about creating a gateway that allows your marketing message to connect on a human level with the specific people who need your services.Have you enjoyed this episode?Find out more and take the FREE quiz at: https://thecoachingrevolution.com/Join the FREE Facebook group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/buildacoachingbusiness

A great email came in recently: "I've listened to two episodes recently that really resonated with what I often wrestle with as coach. They were your conversation with Sarah Short from the Coaching Revolution and your Business Coaching Special. They highlighted for me a tension I constantly wrestle with, between (1) not promising outcomes because they are entirely dependent on on the work the client does and if we oversell it they might not get the outcomes they'd hoped vs (2) acknowledging what Sarah Short (and most of the marketing advice for coaches I've read) says that people buy outcomes and results and that we need to talk about what the coachee/thinker will get from coaching. Which also makes sense. I would LOVE to know what you think about this tension between the two!! I've noticed that when I try and focus on my marketing, ideal client, niche, outcomes etc I end up feeling a huge pressure to deliver that for the client and it really impacts how I coach, as well as feeling like an integrity issue. I find it much harder to be ‘attentively not bothered' when I've promised outcomes and I think it also impacts how the coachee/thinker shows up to the coaching.." Sarah Short returns to The Coaching Inn to talk with Claire about simplicity and speaking in plain English. And that marketing your coaching business doesn't have to be complicated. How do we speak about our work in a way that other people understand - and stop using jargon? Why might the endless acquisition of knowledge not be the way forward? How can you use well what you have already learned? What do we do that accidentally disempowers others? Niche marketing and ideal client profiles are essential for attracting clients who can and will pay a professional rate for coaching services. Coaches should focus on outcomes and the impact of coaching on clients' lives rather than the coaching process itself. Building a financially viable coaching business requires a strategic approach to marketing and visibility in the right places where potential clients are present. Ohioans from all over the state answered Martin Luther King, Junior's call to action Monday. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service. Sarah Short is the volunteer engagement program officer at ServeOhio, the state commission on service and volunteerism. She said all Americans are encouraged to honor the legacy of the late civil rights leader through service to one another, and to their communities. "He spoke a lot on the 'Beloved Community,'" said Short. "And I think that serving on MLK Day really shows that you're committed to service to help really unify everyone, despite different backgrounds and experiences." ServeOhio awarded grants ranging from $750 to $1,500 to nine service projects underway today. Throughout Ohio, thousands of people are taking part in volunteer events organized by their schools, churches and other organizations as well. People interested in giving back to their communities can find opportunities throughout the year online at 'serve.ohio.gov.' About 300 volunteers will be involved ServeOhio's grant projects, which include community garden renovations, food distribution, and assembling safety kits for homes. At OneEighty in Wooster, a domestic abuse treatment center, Short said they're putting together self-care bags. "They're also going to be presenting to their volunteers on resources that they can share with people in their lives," said Short. "So that more people know that if they are victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, they are able to get those resources and it's not so much of a sadly kept secret." She noted every project includes a component to help promote Dr. King's message of peace, unity and service. This story was produced in association with Media in the Public Interest and funded in part by the George Gund Foundation. In this episode, something a little different! I am joined by renowned coach and mentor, Sarah Short, who interviews ME, placing me in the guest seat to talk about my TCK life. Jen Mohindra is not only a Third Culture Kid, but is also an adoptee – a transracial adoptee. She was born in Scotland and grew up in Australia, England, Kenya and Australia (again). When she was 30 she found her birth family and discovered her Scottish/Indian mixed-race heritage (she had wondered why she tanned so well!). Jen has had a fairly typical TCK career in that she chose to work in industries that facilitated international travel – hospitality and finance – for more than 25 years. She then retrained as a coach who works with TCKs to help them find their place in the world.

In September of 2017, Sarah Short was working as a coach and making a decent living. She was serving her clients well, growing her business and getting great results... And she was furious!!! Instead of complaining and kicking and crying, she took action. She and her team began creating a new process for helping coaches truly become successful... and that lead her to develop the coaching revolution! Today, Sarah and her group have built a SOLID core of coaches in the UK and around the world who are seeing incredible success in their business. Following a lightbulb moment, when Liz realised that actually, she'd love to have a coaching business - because coaching is the best bit of what she does - Liz joined The Coaching Revolution as a mentee. Liz talks to Sarah Short about her journey from newly qualified, but clueless (business-development-wise) to experienced coach, presenter and sought-after leadership coach in the tech industry.
