This Week In Track and Field: Unpacking ‘The Ten' And What It All Means For 2025 World Championship Qualifying

It's officially that time again: The spreadsheets are out and the ranking formulas are loaded. Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia have returned with the kind of number crunching that would make a tax accountant blush.Yes — we're talking about The Ten, and more broadly, the increasingly anxiety-inducing state of the 10,000 meters heading into the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.Because apparently World Athletics took one look at the event and said, ‘What if we made this harder, more confusing, and fully dependent on vibes, shoe tech, and whether your country's federation knows how to read the rankings page?'So here we are. The women's standard dropped to a vicious 30:20.00. The men's remains at a world-class 27:00.00. And unless you're from Kenya or Ethiopia—or somehow running 10Ks on the road in super shoes fast enough to melt tarmac—you're probably counting on the whims of the World Rankings gods to punch your ticket to Tokyo. In the U.S., Weini Kelati is still the queen of consistency. Parker Valby and Karissa Schweizer skipped The Ten entirely. Elise Cranny has re-entered the picture and Jessica McClain quietly garnered some valuable points by PR'ing by half a minute. On the men's side, it's a little simpler: Grant Fisher, Nico Young, Graham Blanks, and Woody Kincaid are qualified. All they have to do is battle at USAs.There's still time. A 10K at Mt. SAC is coming. Maybe Pre will host a last-minute 10K.  So let's break down who's up, who's down, who's close and who's hoping UK Athletics doesn't screw them over again.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Preet Majithia | @preetmajithia on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. The track is HOT. Okay, it's actually quite pleasant by Eugene-in-June standards, with temperatures in the high 70s and a pleasant breeze that always seems to be a tailwind in Hayward Field. But the performances laid down last night in Day 8 of the Olympic Trials sure heated up the stadium — even in events where we're not on finals yet. For the first time in history, three men broke 13 seconds in the same 110m hurdles race as Grant Holloway picked up his second national title, made his second Olympic team, and clocked the fourth-fastest performance in history ahead of Freddie Crittenden and Daniel Roberts's lifetime bests. Five men broke 20 seconds in the 200m semifinals led by Noah Lyles's wind-aided 19.60, and another epic battle between Gabby Thomas and Sha'Carri Richardson is set up in the women's 200m final. While middle-distance rounds can sometimes get tactical, they sure didn't tonight. It took 4:05.36 to make the final of the women's 1500m, and the “heavy hitters” heat did not disappoint with Nikki Hiltz making a statement with a 4:01.40 win and five finishes at 4:02.14 or faster. The 1500m final will be absolutely stacked, and in the mixed zone competitors were suggesting that it may make times well under 4 minutes just to make the team. In the men's 800m, it's clear that qualifying for the Games in the 1500m has lifted a weight off Hobbs Kessler's shoulders, as he seems to be absolutely elated in each round of racing and led all semifinal qualifiers with a huge personal best of 1:43.71. Kessler skipped the 1:44s entirely as his PB heading into this weekend was 1:45.07. It's now officially the weekend and, bittersweetly, our final two days of action, so make sure you don't miss any of these incredible competitions over the last few finals. If we've learned anything form the action we've seen so far, we're in store for something very, very fast in multiple events. Back on the podcast is NCAA stud Parker Wolfe! Since I last talked with Parker in September, he placed 9th at the 2023 NCAA XC National Championships, set a bunch of new PRs, and placed 2nd in both the 5k and 3k at the 2024 NCAA Indoor National Championships.  In addition to these recent accomplishments, Parker was first-team All-America status in three sports during the 2022-23 academic year: cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field. He holds records, such as setting a school record and an American Junior Record (U-20) in the 5,000 meters. In the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships, he secured fifth place in the 5,000 meters, earning first-team All-America honors once more. He also gained first-team All-America accolades for the third time in the 2022-23 academic year, excelling in the outdoor 5000m event. In cross country, Parker's accomplishments are equally impressive, being named the 2022 ACC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year and earning All-America honors. In today's conversation, Parker takes me through all of his recent success, what has gone into it, his vision for the coming months, why he hasn't signed an NIL deal, his thoughts on a draft coming to running, if Nico Young can be beat, and much more! I always thoroughly enjoy my conversations with Parker and walk away feeling inspired.  Tap into the Parker Wolfe Special.  You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching "The Running Effect Podcast." If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it.  The podcast graphic was done by the talented: Xavier Gallo  S H O W N O T E S -THE PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLcLIDAqmJBTHeyWJx_wFQ -My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=en -My Newsletter: https://therunningeffect.substack.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dominic-schlueter/message

Dave McGillivray Interview

Running--State of the Sport

In this podcast, George Hirsch and Amby Burfoot talk with Dave McGillivray, who has run the last 51 Boston Marathons in a row, most of them while also serving as Boston's race course director. That meant he couldn't start his run from Hopkinton until everyone else had finished theirs at Copley Square. On April 15, he will be aiming for his 52nd consecutive finish. Sometimes that seems like the least of McGillivray's endurance achievements. He has also finished 9 Ironman Triathlons, several Coast To Coast runs, and a 24-hour pool swim, during which he covered 27 miles. Most of these efforts were undertaken to raise funds for various New England charities.  This April, for the first time since the 1980s, McGillivray will be running with the main pack of Boston entrants. He'll start the first several "waves," then walk back to join a son and daughter in mid-pack. This time he's supporting his own charity, the Dave McGillivray Finish Strong Foundation (link below) that seeks to "inspire and empower" New England youth.  Before speaking with McGillivray, George and Amby discussed the Barkley Marathons, where Jasmin Paris became the first female runner to finish the grueling, 100+ mile forest scramble in Tennessee. The event, and Paris's success, were covered by the NYTimes, BBC, and many other media. This led to a discusion of why ultra endurance events get so much attention. George said he thought it was due to the female angle--that we are at an important historial turning point when women athletes are finally getting their due. He mentioned that Caitlin Clark is probably the most heavily covered collegiate basketball player in this year's NCAA championship playoffs. Along the same lines, Amby recalled the recent success of Netflix's movie about Dyana Nyad. He also noted the recent 10,000 meter track performances of Grant Fisher, Nico Young and Waini Kelati. At The Ten, all met the qualifying times for this summer's Paris Olympics.  After the interview, Amby said he was impressed with the way McGillivray shared his triple-bypass heart surgery with the running public to raise public awareness.  George noted that McGillivray was anything but an instant success in the marathon. He dropped out of his first, and nearly quit his second at the 21 mile mark in 1973. At that point, he thought of his grandfather's belief in him, and picked himself off the sidewalk to complete the last 5 miles. And he hasn't missed a Boston finish since then. "The space between; The tears we cry; Is the laughter that keeps us coming back for more." - Dave Mathews Band The episode is a tribute to the spaces between and most certainly the laughter that comes with them... the space between the indoor season and outdoor championships, between the Olympic Marathon Trials and the Boston Marathon, between your connections at the airport, and between the finish line and that much-needed, post-race bathroom break (+ maybe at least a few more spaces between).  Kara gives us a life update and let's us know why things have been a little more stressful recently. Des takes us through her top 10 result at the NYC Half, including some "rock-tumbling" bathroom issues that show us that Des is just like us.  They then talk about results from the NCAA Indoor Champs (hello Nico Young and Parker Valby!) and The Ten with a little coaching advice for what to do next for at least a few athletes.  In the end, Des poses questions about the 10,000 and about air travel that will make you think, just before the episode leaves you dangling with a Top 3 instead of a Top 5. Listen until the end for a hidden game in this week's episode!

We vibed with a new playlist (Taylor's version) before this great episode! The main training topic was a new study on fatigue resistance, which used a novel protocol for testing durability involving different levels of intensity. "Durability" research may be the most exciting part of modern performance science, and we broaden it out with real-world examples. We finish with our 4 big tips! You already know tip one. Yes, it involves eating. And yes, we are in the pocket of BIG CARB. We also talked about how uphill treadmill workouts can be used by athletes of all levels. That includes details on pace and grade to get started, plus fun training wrinkles where athletes can do double workouts or use them right after runs for a fatigue resistance stimulus. Somehow, no one has sent us a better treadmill after ours keeps breaking. So we are not in the pocket of BIG TREADMILL. But we want to be. And save your appetite for a feast of our favorite topics! Other topics: our love of the running shoe store, Megan's love of the Eras Tour movie, takeaways from Megan's first intentional double workout, how to respond to excess fatigue, the importance of occasionally crying on the couch, our visit to The Feed headquarters, an update on real-world findings with post-exercise ketones, two astonishingly controversial takes on night pees and post-workout showers, wrecking Freetrail Fantasy at the Chuckanut 50k, a weird study on vibration and intervals, athletes as storytellers, Nico Young's NCAA record at The Ten meet, a Lance quote on competition that we strongly disagree with, and a beautiful reflection on love (plus nature's jockstrap). Stick around for the most motivating Listener Corner. What do shooters do? They [deleted] shoot. You can fill in that blank space after listening. Clayton Young Interview

In this podcast, George Hirsch and Amby Burfoot talk with Clayton Young, who recently finished second in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando, Florida. Since Young had run a sensational 2:08:00 in last fall's Chicago Marathon, he is now fully qualified for this summer's Olympic Marathon in Paris. In the Marathon Trials, Young gained a lot of attention for the pair of shades he elected to wear all weekend, and also for his innovative use of a fluids bottle within a metallic bottle that also provided refreshingly-cool caps en route. In the last several miles, he looked better than his training partner Conner Mantz.  Indeed Young several times swerved close to the cheering crowds to egg them on, and to see if he could find an American flag to carry to the finish. Yet in the final yards, he let Mantz edge ahead of him to break the tape. In this interview, Young admits that he could have won the race if he wanted, and that he later agonized for a short time over his decision. He wondered if he had made a mistake. In the end, he says, the "joy of the moment" was more important than winning the marathon.  Before speaking with Young, George and Amby discuss some important recent news stories including: George's trip to the Barcelona Marathon, the great double wins by Parker Valby and Nico Young in the NCAA indoor championships, and Camile Herron's world-record-setting 6-day race in California during which she covered 560 miles. After the interview, George noted the growing list of successful marathon runners from Brigham Young University. He was struck that "the runners have a deep appreciation for each other, and for everyone else who contributes. They've built something special that combines the best of team, family, and community ... and it's really powerful." Amby was impressed with Young's self-confessed "runner nerdiness," and tried to convince him to wear a bro-bra in Paris--one filled with energy gels and ice packs.6 To keep up with Clayton  Young, you can follow him on Instagram. Where to find “Running: State of the Sport” Use your smartphone to download podcast apps from Apple, Spotify, Audible, Pandora, or YouTube Podcasts. The Just Athletics podcast is like "Curb Your Enthusiasm", we go on long hiatuses, but then come back with bangers. Kicking off 2024 we have an incredible guest in Sean Brosnan. Chris, Dave, and Travis banter a little to start the show, so if you just want to listen to Sean, skip to the 17:15 mark in the show. Sean Brosnan has established himself as one of the best coaches in sport. He made his mark at Newberry Park High School, coaching arguably the greatest high school cross country team ever. His teams at Newberry Park quickly elevated after his arrival in 2016 and won four California State Cross Country titles (three for the boys and one for the girls). The boys team won NXN in 2019 and in 2022 (after he had moved to UCLA but his influence was still felt and Aaron Sahlman won the individual title) and the Running Lane Championship in 2021. The boys team was 6th at NXN in 2018. His athletes ran ridiculously fast times on the track during his stint at NP, such as the Sahlman brothers running 1:48, with Colin also running 3:56 in the mile, Nico Young 8:40 in the 3200m, Leo Young 3:39 in the 1500m, Lex Young 13:43 in the 5000m, three school records for Samantha McDonnell in the 800, 1600, and 3200, and the lists go on and on. Sean spent one year at UCLA and quickly had the distance group performing at a very high level. He coached eight All-Americans in the distance events in that one year, highlighted with the women's DMR team placing fourth at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Sean is now a free agent and announces some big plans for his talents in 2024 on this episode. Thanks so much to Sean for jumping on to do the show on such short notice. We hope you all enjoy this time with a phenomenal coach. A Wide Open Race At The Top "Nico Young feels due for an individual title on the grass. From his fourth place finish as a freshman, to falling just short over the final stretch last year, Young has never had a bad performance at NCAAs – his lowest career finish is 11th. A breakthrough in his senior year would be reminiscent of Adam Goucher's legendary 1998 win, some great company for Young to join. Young's only two losses this season have come to arguably his biggest rivals heading into this weekend. Just last week he was edged by New Mexico's Habtom Samuel at the Mountain Regional. Samuel is a newcomer to the NCAA scene this fall but is a two-time World U20 Medalist, placed 17th at the 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships – the senior race! – for his native Eritrea, and boasts a 27:20.08 10,000m PB. He's also won three of the four races he has run this season as a Lobo. At the biggest regular-season meet of the year, the Nuttycombe Invitational, they finished in the two spots behind Harvard's Graham Blanks. While Blanks (6th at NCAAs in 2022) was considered a surprise champ on the day, winning is all he has done this year. Blanks has started four races this season and crossed the finish first in each and every time. The big caveat to Blanks's win at Wisco was that it came in incredibly muddy and rainy conditions that will look nothing like the weather in Charlottesville on Saturday. It is worth wondering if the fair weather in the forecast favors one of the contenders with quicker track PBs more. Another big regular-season winner was Nico Young's teammate Drew Bosley, who started the year strong with wins at NAU's home opener and the Virginia Invitational, but didn't run the Lumberjack's conference meet and was the third finisher on his own team in their regional race. There is certainly concern there but Bosley should not be counted out as you only have to look to a year ago where he stayed with Young until the closing stages of the race. Lastly, it would be impossible to move on without mentioning last year's 5000m/10,000m champion on the track, Stanford's Ky Robinson. Although Robinson (10th last year at NCAAs) doesn't have a signature win over a national field on the grass this year, the 2022 Nuttycombe champion has put together a solid campaign. The Cardinal crew hasn't made much noise in the team conversation this year, but they'll be looking to cap the season with back-to-back individual champions. Today's episode is one of the most touching stories we've ever told on the podcast. Today, I have the extreme privilege of sharing the full story of Easton Allred. If you're not familiar with Easton, he was one of the best high school runners of his era. He ran PRs of 4:05.67 (Mile) and 8:58 (2-Mile at altitude). As a sophomore in high school, he placed 22nd at NXN and returned his junior year to place fifth behind legends like Nico Young and Cole Hocker. He won back-to-back team UHSAA 6A Cross Country State Championships (2018-19). Easton then went on to compete for BYU while he battled his health struggles. He ran 13:45 in the 5k and 4:04 in the Mile during his short time competing there. As his running career progressed, Easton started to experience severe health issues such as extreme nausea, anxiety, and more. After seeing dozens of doctors, he was found to have an anatomical disorder known as MALS. The syndrome involves compression of vital arteries branching from the aorta. This compression damages the nerves, causing them to send scrambled signals to the brain, which are interpreted as intense nausea and anxiety.  Today's episode was moving beyond words, and I get emotional just thinking about all that Easton has gone through and overcome. In this episode, Easton goes through his full story and all that he has gone through and overcome. He walks me through all the ups and downs of his life, and the meaning behind it all. I can't stress this enough: take the time to listen to today's conversation. It will move you. Lastly, please share this episode with a friend who you think will benefit from hearing Easton's story. Coach Cornfield, with a background in Sports Management and a master's degree in Educational Leadership from NAU, has spent eight years at Northern Arizona University, progressing from a Graduate Assistant Coach to his current role as an Assistant Coach, specializing in distance and mid-distance running. His coaching prowess is evident through his instrumental contributions to the Lumberjack teams' multiple victories at the Big Sky Championships and NCAA National Championships. Notably, he helped guide athletes like Luis Grijalva, Drew Bosley, Nico Young, and Abdihamid Nur to impressive feats, including NCAA titles and Olympic participation. Under his guidance, the men's track & field and cross country teams have achieved remarkable success, culminating in championship wins and numerous All-America honors. In today's conversation, I pick Coach Cornfield's brain on a plethora of subjects relating to NAU's success and his experience as a coach. Not only did he win in stunning fashion, but also broke his former teammate Nico Young's course record. Aaron also helped his team Newbury Park win their second-ever national team championship. On the track, Aaron is a 4xmile (HS) national record holder and holds PRs of 1:48.91 (800m), 4:01.34 (mile), and 8:48.28 (3200m). Aaron has made it known that he will be going after Michael Granville's long-standing 800m high school national record this upcoming season. In this episode, Aaron documents his start in the sport, growing up with Colin Sahlman as a brother, Newbury Park, winning NXN, future goals, and aspirations, and much more! "It's not chance. It's not talent on the team. It's what we talk about and how we train. That's never going to change. Regardless of what athletes we have, we're always going to be able to perform within some contained range – whether that's winning or 5th place, it's always going to be something that we're proud of.” My guest for today's episode is Nico Young. He is a star for Northern Arizona University's track and cross country team. He just finished second individually in the NCAA Cross Country Championships but led the Lumberjacks to their sixth national title in the last seven years. Before even arriving in Flagstaff, he was the sparkplug that kicked off Newbury Park High School's cross country and track dominance when he ran 9:05 for 3200 meters as a sophomore and then won a bunch of state and national titles as a junior and senior. It's been a great progression for him. He's lowered his personal best to 13:11 for the 5000m, which puts him at No. 3 on the all-time collegiate list. He was third at the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships in the event and then took eighth at the U.S. Outdoor Championships 5000m final. All of this and he's still just 20 years old. We touch on a bit of his progression, how he's handled that rise in an era of social media, what makes this NAU team special and also what it was like coming out as gay before the start of the cross country season. I appreciate Nico's openness in this conversation and I'm looking forward to seeing how fast he goes this weekend at the BU Season Opener, where he's the top seed in the men's 5000m. The 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships are in the books. It marked the first time that a tiebreaker determined the national champion. Stanford's Charles Hicks outkicked Nico Young in the final stretch to claim in the men's individual title. On the women's side N.C. State became the first school to go back-to-back since Villanova in 2009 and 2010. In today's episode, we recap what the past few months have been like for Nico after a very successful indoor season. We go through running the third-fastest time ever in the NCAA 5k (he ran 13:11), qualifying for his first NCAA outdoor championships, and then ultimately what it was like to place third in those championships. What a week. The 2022 NCAA championships are in the books and the Joseph Fahnbulleh freight train arrived, Katelyn Tuohy got NCAA title #1, Abby Steiner got some Allyson Felix comparisons - we break it all down. At 110:33 we are joined by the fastest high school 800m runner in the nation (and one of the most confident), Cade Flatt (@FlattCade & IG: @cadeflatt) from tiny Benton Kentucky (population 4,756) before he tries to break Michael Granville's 26-year-old national 800m record of 1:46.45 at this weekend's New Balance Outdoor Nationals at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Cade talks about the record, his unorthodox training (how does a 5 mile week sound?), his confidence, and his desire to race the senior USATF Outdoor nationals this year. Devon Allen shocked the world at the NYC Grand Prix as the US stars were out in full force, Noah Lyles, Sydney McLaughlin, Christian Coleman and Sha'Carri Richardson in her fish net attire. LIKE | SUBSCRIBE | SHARE (: In episode fifty-four of The Running Effect, I have the great privilege of speaking with Nico Young. Nico is undoubtedly one of the greatest prep stars that America has ever had. In high school, Nico cemented himself as one of the greatest high school runners ever (in my opinion he's the greatest). In just his senior year, he went undefeated all year and won NXN setting a course record along the way despite horrible conditions. He was also excellent in the classroom with a 4.68 GPA. Excelling both academically and in running, Nico won the 2019-2020 Gatorade Boys Cross Country & Track and Field Player of the Year. An award reserved for only the best of the best. Due to the pandemic, Nico never got the chance to compete his senior year track season which makes his high school career accolades all the more impressive! After Nico graduated high school, he then went onto attend Northern Arizona University (NAU). At NAU, Nico has only continued to flourish. Within just two years, Nico is one of the top runners in the NCAA. Last summer Nico qualified for the US Olympic Trials placing 9th in the 5k final beating a handful of professionals. He has also placed top-ten at multiple NCAA championships and helped his team win team titles. Nico currently holds the US High School National Records in the 2k & 3k and US U20 indoor and outdoor 5k records. Many people see the results, but don't see all the work that went into the result. In this episode, we try to unpack Nico's successful career the best we can! We do a big deep dive into Nico's career from his start in the sport in fifth grade to his future in the sport. We talk about pressure, having a "process over outcomes" mindset, working on the mental side of running, working with two amazing coaches in his career (Mike Smith and Sean Brosnan), NCAA Championships, what makes NAU special, and so so much more! It was an absolute pleasure to talk with Nico and get a deeper understanding of his journey in this sport! I can't wait to see what the future holds for him. The saying "The sky is the limit" is truly the case for Nico Young. Nico's high school coach encapsulates just how special Nico is with this quote, "I don't know when I will ever see another athlete with Nico's talent or ability to push himself beyond his limits along with the curiosity to see how truly great he can be. He's a once-in-a-lifetime athlete." If you want to help us out please like, subscribe, and share.
