I had such a blast chopping it up with the extremely talented Katrina Lenzly. Not only is she an award-winning art director who has done incredible creative work for big brands such as HBO, the NBA, and The Coca-Cola Company, but she's also a public speaker, and a neo-soul hip-hop artist known as King Cooley. (And I thought I did a lot!) We had an incredibly deep and candid conversation about Black cultural expression, being a working designer, and a lot more.Katrina talked about growing up on the southside of Atlanta, and shared how she made her way to Savannah College of Art and Design and eventually found her design voice in an unlikely place — a skate shop! We also talked about the realities of advocating for Black-centric narratives and DEI initiatives in the design space, the ebb and flow of support for Black creatives after the summer of 2020, and the power of intention. This interview with Katrina was really a full-circle moment for both of us, so I hope this conversation inspires you to forge your own path in your creative career!LinksKatrina Lenzly's WebsiteKing Cooley on InstagramFor a video of this interview, including a full transcript, visit revisionpath.com.==========Donate to Revision PathFor 10 years, Revision Path has been dedicated to showcasing Black designers and creatives from all over the world. Branden Collins, founder of the design studio The Young Never Sleep, is a deep thinker. I had such a blast during our conversation about the complex and thought-provoking world of tech, creativity, and the endless possibilities they hold. As an interdisciplinary designer, Branden has worked at Cartoon Network and Snap, but he's also been heads down in the Atlanta creative community as well, which he's just returning to after a stint in Los Angeles. We talked about the ever-evolving landscape of social media, including the rise of microblogging platforms (as a response to Twitter's X-ification), the cautiousness in navigating the digital realm, and some potential ethical issues surrounding AI and VR. Branden also shared his philosophy of technoculture, and we explored world building, information science, issues sex workers face in online platforms, and the parallels between past technological shifts and the emergence of the metaverse. This episode will definitely make you think twice about the tech we build, how we use it, and how it affects our world!LinksThe Young Never SleepThe Young Never Sleep on InstagramFor a full transcript of this interview, visit revisionpath.com.==========Donate to Revision PathFor 10 years, Revision Path has been dedicated to showcasing Black designers and creatives from all over the world. His Atelier project titled "A Return to Zero" is a case study that examines the critical eco-conscious building material mass timber. Both Kacie and Eric represent historic firsts for the Atelier Ambassadorship and today's conversation comes from Paula Wallace's virtual Atelier pinning ceremony with the Ambassadors in November 2020. It's easy to see why Kim Goulbourne calls herself a "chronic creator". Whether she's helping first-time renters in NYC or helping others experience more of their city, this Webby award-winning maker is full of ideas with a focus on creating purpose-driven experiences with design and code. Kim talked me through her thought process for new projects, and she shared some information about her latest venture. Her and I also spent some time talking shop about entrepreneurship, finding leads, her dream project, and some of her inspirations. Kim is definitely someone you'll want to watch, so make sure you follow her and see what gets "Bourn" next! Mike Buzzard is a Design Manager on the UX Community and Culture team at Google where he works on shaping, resourcing, supporting, and guiding a range of programs and projects that are designed to ensure the health and success of UX at Google. He also recently helped design the first of its kind undergraduate degree in User Experience Design at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). He’s currently working with other design leaders to elevate the craft of design in emerging design cities and is an investor and advisor to many awesome companies. Previously, Mike co-founded the design agency Cuban Council with his friends and collaborators, Toke Nygaard and Michael Schmidt. They created a company that could focus on making great things the way they thought it should be made. In their 10 year run, they were able to design cutting edge digital product design solutions for companies like Facebook, Google, Zendesk, Rdio, Quora, Evernote, and Epitaph Records. "It's hugely important to understand what you're capable of contributing and being surprised with the outcome when you partner with someone that brings a different aspect to the work.... When you collaborate with people and get their input and perspective it can be extraordinary and that's what gets me out of bed every day." Back in day as a “Creative Developer”, he helped usher in early generations of web designers and digital product designers through his commitment and contributions to sites like k10k.net, newstoday.com, designiskinky.net, and many more. On this episode we discuss: How Mike helps evangelize, elevate, and grow design at Google by working with a wide array of design teams, design leadership, business units, partners, and agencies. What it was like doing web design back in the old school days when folks were hacking art and code to make unique web site and discovering the vast opportunities. Remember pixel fonts? The story of building Newstoday.com. His experience being hired by Brett Gurewitz from Bad Religion (one of his personal heros) to redesign Epitaph Record’s. How Cuban Council was started, how they grew, and why they eventually closed the doors. Why collaboration and a perspective of value is important to doing great work, and why it's important to always be sharing. Why designers needing to trust and believe that we’re “doing what’s right for people most of the time” and that before being able to deliver a argument that's convincing and compelling, you have to be confident. The story about a time when a young Mark Zuckerberg asked him to define design while they were working on the Facebook Logo. We have a lot of students that listen to Revision Path, but I haven't actually had a student on as a guest in a long time! Enter Eniola Odetunde: a visual designer and current grad student at the Savannah College Art of Design. She shared some great insights into the life of a student designer that I think you'll enjoy. Eniola's specialty as a designer deals with movement, so we talked about how she got into dynamic typography and stop motion work. She also shared why hand lettering is so popular right now, and shared how she gets inspired and works on new projects. We even went into the Atlanta design scene a bit and talked about diversity in the design industry. According to Eniola, "you might not be the best, but you have to figure out your style." Excellent advice! Eniola Odetunde's Website

We talked about the work she's doing at General Assembly, discussed some of her design inspirations, and she shared how she ended up as creative director for a Grammy Award-winning artist! Denise's positive attitude and sunny outlook on life is definitely an inspiration. Big thanks to Jarrett Coger for the introduction!
