Show Notes: CAPT Brent & Nicole Breining, USN (Ret.), return to the podcast today to continue our series on pornography and sexuality. If you haven't listened to the first episode in this series, I encourage you to check out that episode first, get to know Brent and Nicole's story, then return to hear today's episode as we dive into the nature of addiction. We discuss statistics and real-world case studies regarding the pornography industry that reveal the magnitude of its harmful effects on society and on individuals alike. Brent and Nicole then unpack terms and concepts such as the cyclone of addiction, the shame cycle, and neurochemistry of the brain that all point to God's intricate design for His creation. Check out the various resources mentioned throughout this episode: · Restoring the Soul podcast: Part 1 with Tony Anderson, and Part 2 with Tony Anderson · Fight the New Drug · The Social Dilemma · Pure Desire Ministries, through which Brent and Nicole help men and women heal from unwanted sexual behaviors and their repercussions As you listen to this conversation with Brent and Nicole, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor: We refer to the statistic that 49% of rescued sex trafficking victims were forced to participate in the production of pornographic material. How ought that knowledge affect decisions to consume that pornographic material? How does the pornography industry harm our perceptions of others as individuals made in the image of God? Why might “rigid, disengaged homes,” per Brent's description, often become an environment in which many individuals become sex addicts? What habits can you establish to “live in this world of technology… but do it in a healthy manner,” as Brent says? What sin struggles have prompted you to feel shame and hide from God and from fellow believers? Loads of Additional Resources on this topic Problematic Sexual Behavior (Men): Books: Laaser, M. Alternatively, if you have an idea for a guest or topic I should consider for a future episode of the show, send an email to podcast@ocfusa.org. Show Notes: In January 2023, Pensacola OCF hosted a one-day workshop to discuss sexual brokenness and unwanted sexual behaviors like pornography addiction and to introduce solutions for healing and wholeness. CAPT Brent & Nicole Breining, USN (Ret.), led sessions throughout that one-day workshop, and they join me today on the podcast as we begin a series of episodes focusing on similar topics. Brent and Nicole share their story and the impact that porn had on their marriage in this episode, and their remaining three Crosspoint episodes will cover topics such as the nature of addiction, the shame cycle, and the neurochemistry of the brain. Having reached a breaking point in their marriage in 2012 and recovered since then by God's grace, Brent and Nicole talk about why that addiction placed such a strain on their marriage, how God worked through accountability partners in their healing process, and more. Above all, their desire is for listeners to understand there is hope and that God can restore anyone struggling with problematic sexual behaviors. Brent retired from the Navy in 2017 after a distinguished 27-year career, and he currently serves as a Foursquare Institutional Chaplain with Pure Desire Ministries, through which he helps men walk in sexual purity and break free from unwanted sexual behaviors. Nicole received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Illinois and a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Illinois at Chicago, going on to work as a hospital pharmacist for 25 years. Nicole also has been working with Pure Desire Ministries, leading their betrayal and beyond groups for spouses for about three years. Both Brent and Nicole are accredited pastoral professionals. As you listen to this conversation with Brent and Nicole, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor: How can the church establish a culture of grace, especially as applies to this topic of addiction? Brent refers to Ephesians 5:25, which says “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” How does this verse shape your view of emotional intimacy in marriage? Brent talks about the iPhone's contribution to an increased accessibility to pornography in recent years. What steps can you take to ensure your own devices aren't contributing to addictive behaviors? How does our freedom in Christ set us free from the shame of our secrets? Nicole talks about realizing her husband's struggles with pornography prompted her to react in sin as well. If you've been hurt by someone else's sin, what's the value of not using their sin as license to sin in response? If you're struggling with addictive behaviors, sexual or otherwise, what positive habits can you establish to replace those behaviors? Why is assessing your heart posture in all things so critical? Sexual love is God's beautiful creation. But for so many of us, our brokenness negatively impacts it. This past September at the Pure Desire Summit, Dr. Juli Slattery spoke on the four pillars of sexual love and what makes it such a beautiful gift from God. On today's episode, we feature her Summit breakout session. Dr. Slattery covers how the importance of faithfulness, intimate knowing, sacrificial love, and a passionate celebration of covenant love all impact our sex life. It's likely that at some point, you've found your morals have felt incongruent with a sexual scenario you've found yourself in. While this can feel pretty blindsiding, what would it mean to stop and think about it? Damon Young is an award-winning philosopher and author of “On Getting Off”, a book about sex and philosophy. In the book, Damon urges us to grapple with the complexity of sex in an honest and self-deprecating way. In this episode, Damon and Caroline discuss what it means to think about sex, the importance of humour in the bedroom, and embracing the ethical dilemmas sex gives rise to. In this episode, Joseph and Anu respond to the questions of John and Chioma. John asks: "How should intending couples talk about sex before marriage while also trying to be cautious about their minds and not get carried away? Why should this be discussed before marriage and not till after the wedding? What should be the issues to be discussed when having such a discussion?" Chioma, on the other hand, narrates a scenario where a newly wedded couple struggled with sex because the lady found it extremely painful. Both questions were addressed and Anu shared her personal experience as it pertains to Chioma's question. RESOURCES RECOMMENDED 1. Jesus set up the perfect formula, if you want to use it that way, for us to follow on how to operate in marriage. He does it not based on performance. This is the Gospel. God is sacrificially forgiving. He forgives so much it hurts. Quite literally, to forgive us, His Son had to pay the price. That’s our standard in our marriages. Forgive so much it hurts. And truly forgive. Truly love. Truly say, “You hurt me. I forgive you. And I want to remain open to you. I want to be just as vulnerable and loving to you as before.”
Charlotte Brontë's 1847 novel Jane Eyre is one of the great love stories of all time, but it's also the story of a woman who speaks her truth even when this means risking everything she wants. Jane, an orphan raised in a cruel family and struggling to survive in a world where poor women have few chances, falls in love with dashing and mysterious Mr. Rochester, the owner of the estate where she finds a job. A secret in his part forces Jane to chose between compromising her integrity or giving up on him, until dramatic circumstances and her courageous choices change her fate. Do we have to give up autonomy and freedom when we fall in love? Jane Eyre provides the cultural script we still follow today, in every rom-com movie, reality dating show and also high-brow novels that explore the vagaries of our hearts. I spoke with Professor Susan Ostrov Weisser, an expert not only on Jane Eyre but also on this cultural script of romance for women, where a young girl's life goal is supposed to become both independent yet also attached to a man. I asked her whether falling in love means giving up one's freedom, how to make sense of the "madwoman in the attic," to whom novelist Jean Rhys famously gave voice in her book, Wide Sargasso Sea, and whether Jane Eyre is really a feminist book. Has the script changed by now? Susan Ostrov Weisser is Professor of English at Adelphi University and the author of: The Glass Slipper: Women and Love Stories Rutgers U. Press (20130; Women and Romance (ed.), New York University Press (2001); A Craving Vacancy: Women and Sexual Love in the British Novel, 1740-1880 (1997); and with co-editor Jennifer Fleischner, Feminist Nightmares: Women At Odds (1994). /////////////// Follow us: TWITTER - @ulibaer INSTAGRAM - @ulinyc (THINK ABOUT IT PODCAST) - @thinkaboutit.podcast //////////////// Listen to the Podcast on: APPLE PODCASTS - Think About It Podcast SPOTIFY - Think About It Podcast YOUTUBE: Ulrich Baer //////////////// Thanks for listening! :) Uli Baer.

In this episode of Welcome To My Vagina, Jessy and Rebekah get into it to get you clitorate! That’s right, we talk all about the clitoris! We also introduce you to Nicole, badass lady behind Vagina Party, an Instagram account that helps you find all kinds of motivation to host your own Vagina Parties at home! But before we get into all that, if you listen to this episode on its release day, November 5th, 2019, DON’T FORGET TO VOTE! And, almost as importantly, go on over to glow.fm/welcometomyvagina to sponsor your favorite podcast! We need your money! 01:00: WE PLAYED VAGINA TABOO AND IT WAS AMAZING! To find Nicole, head on over to her Instagram account, @vaginaparty, and check out her great Etsy Store to find all kinds of (vagina) party games! Seriously, next time we throw a party we are buying some of this stuff. It’s rad. 09:30: Check out our awesome episode with Dr. Laurie Betito where she talks all about orgasming post-menopause. She even wrote a book called The Sex Bible for People Over 50: The Complete Guide to Sexual Love for Mature Couples that you can buy on the internet! 11:00: Because everything is related, we talked about hysteria way back when. Give that episode a listen and catch up on some patriarchal nonsense. 14:30: This was not random, it’s real! Alligators (and some turtles) exhibit temperature-dependent sex determination, which means that the temperature of the developing eggs determines the sex of the offspring. So in American alligators, for example, incubation at 33 degrees centigrade and above yields mostly males, while incubation at 30 degrees Celsius and below yields mostly females! Wow! This, however, is not true for people. Sorry, Galen. 16:00: Couldn’t really find any connection between the clitoris and demonic possessions BUT here is a really interesting article from Bitch Media about demonic possessions in movies and how women are oftentimes used as vessels rather than actual characters. 22:00: Here is a really interesting piece from The Conversation that discusses how society’s (intentional) lack of knowledge about the clitoris is very dangerous. Authors Jane Chalmers and Cat Jones discuss how “women are at risk of sexual dysfunction (lack of desire or arousal etc.) from operations on their urinary and reproductive organs.” 29:00: Head on over to mylola.com and get 30% off your first purchase of tampons, lube, pads and condoms with the code WELCOME30 and to simplehealth.com for your first month of birth control FREE and delivered to your door with discount code WELCOME. 36:15: Check out this 3-d clit! Thaddeus Russell, formerly a professor at Barnard College, author of Renegade History of the United States should satisfy listeners who love hidden history and unsung heroes and heroines. Hear him discuss how "Bad Women Made American the Home of the Free" as he turn myths of the "American character" on their head as he discusses how prostitutes in the 19th century won many freedoms for today's women and how poor, immigrant women were the vanguard of the consumer revolution that radically transformed and liberated the lives of all Americans. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HOUR hear Art Noble, author of The Sacred Female - A Sonata of Sexual Love and Spirituality discuss there's more to sex than you think as he covers such taboo subjects as female ejaculation, sex and sexual love, female sexual responses, transcendent sex, sexual energy, sexual myth and misogyny and sexual history - specifically where female orgasmic ejaculation can be found in the Bible.
