The legend continues... this week, we're proceeding north to Scotland for Book 2 of Isle of the Mighty. There's more of the same in terms of bizarre history section content management, NPCs who are intriguing and forgettable in equal measure, and a geography chapter that is surprisingly good! Even though in the balance, this section probably leaves more questions unanswered than we had when we started, there are some moments of true enjoyment scattered through. (Lookin' at you, Loch Lads.) It's heavier on the vignettes and side fiction than England was—but we'll take it in exchange for how the book completely skips over some of the country's more important centuries, in favor of talking about random changeling feuds that have no bearing on the game. A little of this, a little of that. the usual suspects Herewith our social media links for the podcast: Discord: https://discord.gg/SAryjXGm5jEmail: podcast@changelingthepodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100082973960699Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/changelingthepodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/changelingcast This might be the last time we include Twitter on the list, at least for a while. Some are listed and discussed at the end of the recording, and others fall into the "damn, should've mentioned that one too" category. We trust once more that you've enough Films: Brave, Braveheart, Highlander (but not the sequel, eesh), Loch Ness, Macbeth (several versions), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Rob Roy, Trainspotting (and okay, why not the sequel), The Wicker Man...TV: Gargoyles (partially), Monarch of the Glen, Outlander... Literature: the poems of Robert Burns and Carol Ann Duffy, Knots and Crosses, Lanark, Diana Gabaldon's Outlander novels (on which the TV show is based), Trainspotting (the novel), The Wasp Factory (content warning!), Witch Wood...Music: Albannach, Bannal, Capercaillie, Clann an Drumma, Mouth Music, The Proclaimers (although "I'm Gonna Be" was likely a Banality trigger for a while back in the day), Silly Wizard, Tannahill Weavers, The Waterboys, Wolfstone... One exception to the "go find it yourself" rule is this album of waulking songs by Bannal, who are decidedly un-Banal. It's a group of ladies making cloth in the traditional Highland way, accompanied by the old melodies and versifications that have a distinctive and beautiful sound. Give it a listen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9qsGKWZ6HU: ... caption this Just one image to share this time, and it's hardly a pin-up. We're still trying to figure out who these characters are, what kith they're supposed to be, and what their story is. A green-tinted hornless troll and his ghoul redcap friend? Two mortals under a mysterious curse? What even is going on with the sun in this picture? Better Read than Dead: Literature from a Left Perspective

If you were to write an historical novel about the Scottish hero-outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor, you’d probably make it about Roy Roy, right? Well, you are an amateur, because that, comrades, is just not how Walter Scott rolls -- which actually shows us why his theory of history is pretty sophisticated. His sprawling Rob Roy (1817) is in fact about a failson named Francis Osbaldistone, with world-historical figures and Rob Roy himself sword-fighting, kilt-wearing, and doing other manly-man things around the periphery. We’re talking Marxism and history, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century constructions of the nation, and how lots of Scott’s (brunette, “Celtic”) heroines are kinda domme-y. This is a deep dive into Tristan’s dorkdom, so buckle up. We read and highly recommend the Oxford edition edited by Ian Duncan. For more on Scott’s central role in nineteenth-century Scottish literature and modern conceptions of the nation, see Duncan’s marvelous Scott’s Shadow: The Novel in Romantic Edinburgh. Our outro music this week is “Donald MacGillivray,” a song about the Jacobite risings, by the Scottish folk band Silly Wizard, used with permission. Many thanks to the band! Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts. Who are your Celtic music heroes? Sharing a tune and some food together this St. Andrews Day, Scottish traditional music legend and curry fanatic Phil Cunningham joins Sumayya Usmani and Ghillie Basan on the Curry Club to indulge himself in his lifelong obsession with curry. On the road in the early days of Silly Wizard the only places still open to get food after a gig were the curry houses of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee. Before long the band had become connoisseurs of the takeaway menu. In the years that followed Phil and good pal Aly Bain started making their own curries, roasting their own spices and using each other as guinea pigs for their latest curry experiments in the kitchen. While they have both become global legends of the Scottish music scene, within the traditional music world, Phil is now a curry king. He describes his love to Sumayya and Ghillie while getting some top tips for his own kitchen. To keep our stomachs full for St. Andrews Day celebrations, Sumayya and Phil make a Scottish take on shalgham ghost together, a spicy version of venison stovies. Meanwhile, Ghillie explores a very Scottish spice, juniper.

Then another golden oldie from Polkemmet Ground Pipe Band and then the only modern track is from Julie Fowlis! Next up is Rod Paterson singing the Birks of Invermay and I finish up with my favourite band of all time - Silly Wizard! Visit www.footstompin.com for all your Scottish music and culture needs.
