194 - Overcoming Tedious Tasks In today's episode, we explore how to tackle the boring, tedious tasks that often derail our productivity. Drawing insights from Peter Hollens' book, Self-Disciplined: for Tedious, Boring, and Difficult Things, we discuss practical strategies to make these tasks more manageable. 1. 52/17 Technique: Work for 52 minutes, then take a 17-minute break. This method, based on the Pomodoro Technique, helps maintain focus and reduces mental fatigue.2. Parking Downhill: Start with simple tasks to build momentum. Ease into your workday with activities that require less cognitive effort, like checking emails.3. Four Quarters Method: Divide your day into four segments—early morning, late morning, afternoon, and evening. This makes your day feel less daunting and allows you to align tasks with your energy levels.4. 12-Week Plan: Focus on short-term, 12-week goals instead of annual resolutions. This creates a sense of urgency and allows for frequent reassessments and adjustments.5. Pickle Jar Theory: Prioritize by starting with the most critical tasks (big rocks) and filling in with smaller tasks (pebbles and sand). This ensures your most important tasks get done first.6. Daily Themes: Assign specific days to particular types of tasks. Consistency builds rhythm and reduces decision fatigue.7. Energy Patterns: Schedule demanding tasks during your peak energy times. Understand whether you're a morning or evening person and plan accordingly.8. Automation and Templates: Automate repetitive tasks and use templates to streamline workflows, reducing mental load and freeing up time for more critical activities. https://startwithsmallsteps.com/194-overcoming-tedious-tasks/ Jill's Links https://abetterlifeinsmallsteps.com https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJill https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepspodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/schmern Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

Earned: Strategies and Success Stories From the Best in Beauty + Fashion
In Ep. 91 of Earned, Conor sits down with Peter Hollens, a powerhouse a cappella singer who has amassed a following of over 3M subscribers on YouTube, and over a billion views across his various social channels. To start the show, Peter explains why he has pursued other business ventures outside of being a creator, including investing, consulting, and recently founding his own business (Inhouse Creators), and shares how these interests help him avoid burnout. We then learn how Peter leverages AI like ChatGPT to help him create his content, before unpacking Peter's journey as a creator over the last decade—and why signing with a major record label was one of his biggest regrets. We discuss the challenges of finding balance as both a content creator and a father, and Peter shares the story of losing his voice for 18 months due to a stubborn granuloma. We also learn how during that time, Peter was able to discover his passion and business acumen for consulting companies about the creator economy, an experience that later inspired his new business: Inhouse Creators. To close the show, Peter explains how Inhouse Creators works to connect businesses to experienced, savvy creators to produce their content, and why companies that don't invest in the creator economy will get left behind. In this episode, you will learn:How Peter leverages AI like ChatGPT to help him create contentWhy signing with a major record label was one of Peter's biggest regretsWhy businesses should look to hire creators for in-house content productionResources:Peter's YoutubePeter's WebsitePeter's InstagramInhouse CreatorsConnect with the Guest:Peter Hollens' LinkedInConnect with Conor Begley & CreatorIQ:Conor's LinkedIn - @conormbegleyCreatorIQ LinkedIn - @creatoriqFollow us on social:CreatorIQ YouTube - @TribeDynamicsCreatorIQ Instagram - @creatoriqCreatorIQ TikTok - @creator.iqCreatorIQ Twitter - @CreatorIQ

This episode I'm so excited to sit down with the one and only Peter Hollens! A pioneer in YouTube a-cappella, Peter has been putting out music on YouTube for twelve years, has made hundreds of videos, has nearly three million subscribers and over 750 million views. Recently he has transitioned to creator education, consulting, and AI applications, and together we'll be talking about the effect of AI in the music industry and in the economy at large.
Tim Foust is a sardonic, yet sensitive, singer-songwriter who doesn't take himself too seriously. As an established performer with all-vocal country band, Home Free, Tim is known mostly for a bass voice that reaches notes deep enough to shake arenas. Now, as he begins to release new recordings as a solo artist, the world will be introduced to a master craftsman who can build a wall of sound using the unequaled range of his voice alone. An accomplished songwriter, Tim has achieved recognition for his compositions on Home Free's Billboard Chart-topping albums, “Timeless,” “Dive Bar Saints” and So Long Dixie.” With an unmistakably authentic writing voice, Tim uses his clever wit to tell stories inspired by both fact and fiction. He enjoys being a wordsmith as much as a musician, and each piece is an opportunity for him to pen lyrics that stir emotion as well as entertain with originality and, at times, humor. Onstage, Tim is known equally for his voice and his personality. Like a big brother, he shows affection to his audience through jokes and teasing, and he's built a community of fans who travel from far and wide just to be in the same room with him. Tim is a true musician's musician, which is why he feels at-home in Nashville. Born and raised in the small town of Nederland, Texas, he went on to live in Los Angeles, Boston, Minneapolis, and At-Sea as a guest entertainer aboard cruise ships, before joining Home Free in 2010. In 2013, the group found international success after competing on, and winning, the NBC series “The Sing-Off”. Tim finally found a home in Tennessee in 2014, which is where he also met his wife and frequent musical cohort, Jenika Marion. Collaborating with friends is a huge part of what makes Tim happy and one of the ways he prefers to spend his time. He has been featured on releases by Peter Hollens, VoicePlay, Straight No Chaser, The Hound + The Fox and more. This year, he plans to use new platforms to share the stage and screen with his talented cohorts via stage and backyard shows, destination experiences, livestreamed events, exclusive recordings and more. He recently formed the supergroup, Sweet + Low Music Co., with some off his favorite vocalists, writers and multi-instrumentalists. Tim has two solo albums - “The Best That I Could Do,” a collection of country originals, and “Pieces of Me, Vol. 1,” and all-Tim, all a cappella Doo-Wop project.

This week, we continue the conversation with Peter Hollens, American singer/songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur. Known for doing acapella videos of just him – and his multiple voices, Peter is his own engineer and singer. That's not to say that he hasn't done any collaborations because Peter has collaborated with other great artists – including one video that he wished could have picked up more audience (on top of its two million views on YouTube.) In this episode, Peter talks about his vocal technique, his love for acoustic music, scatting, and some tips on how to become a better creative entrepreneur. He's also going to give some suggestions for how you can explore and expand the sounds that you make and his thoughts on artistic integrity and how far can you go without losing the essence of the original music. In this episode, you will hear: How acapella singing differs from classical singing How Peter approaches his singing The ONE video he wished could have gained more traction How the pandemic affected him Some tech and plug-in recommendations for great recording sessions The best and worst thing about being a singer Peter's take on scat singing Subscribe and Review Have you subscribed to our podcast? If there's one artist who has inspired my current vocal endeavors more than any other, it's Peter Hollens – THE GUY who made multiple layering of the same human voice popular on YouTube. Peter now has 400 videos on his channel. Some are elaborate collaborations with well-known artists and some are just him, multiple times. While many singers only need to think about singing one line and maybe a few harmonies, Peter has to think about singing tons of lines. Just imagine the additional time it takes for him to create a song because he is the whole band. His songs are also released with music videos of high production value. His channel has been going strong since its debut in 2011, it's amazing how he's able to keep up his pace – even with a team in place. Now actively taking a role beyond singing, Peter offers consulting and advising services for creators and creative companies. Today, Peters talks about his influences and mentors, how he's able to release music videos consistently, and his process of producing high-quality videos. In this episode, you will hear: Voice type he prefers in acapella Sound engineering and techniques for layering the voices Peter's music influences and mentors Educating creators on true value The process of making a video and how he's able to release videos consistently The power of professional video editing What makes a good collaborator Tips for collaborating with your spouse in music and life Subscribe and Review Have you subscribed to our podcast? This week on Recording A Cappella I speak with one of my most trusted editors and member of the Recording A Cappella mastermind group, David Fowler. Let me introduce you to David. I first met David 2 years ago when I tracked a group he was singing in at the time. He discovered a cappella in high school and started messing around creating YouTube videos. He sang in a group in college and grew his YouTube channel into something pretty special. Fast forward a few years and he’s now in a pro group performing internationally and working closely with Peter Hollens on Peter’s videos in Eugene, OR. It’s been a whirlwind for him and I hope you can take some great lessons from his experience. In this episode, David gives us the “cliff notes” version of how he got involved in a cappella, including how Season 1 of the television show Sing Off, pushed him to start an a cappella group, and posting his first YouTube video. We then talked about his progression as an a cappella artist, his group EVOC, his success as a YouTube Content Creator and his exhilarating experience working with Peter Hollens as his audio and video producer. -------- Want more support? Join myself and members like David in the Recording A Cappella Mastermind Group. Our current mastermind is a group of six people that had to meet certain criteria they had to apply and then have a brief call with me to make sure it was the right fit. I personally mentor each member of the group and facilitate our calls. But more than that our group is about providing the members with the support confidence inspiration camaraderie and unimpeded access not just to me but to a wealth of other forward focused individuals and a true mastermind setting. They're a safe space where you can nurture and grow your best a cappella self within the safe confines of your wise peers and no amount of genius marketing I could ever do would give true voice to their power. If you’ve watched any amazing covers on YouTube, you’ve likely seen this guy. He and I met at a conference recently that he performed, and this conversation we just had was a blast! We go deep on everything to do with creators, particularly YouTube creators. It’s a world I’ve become increasingly curious about, and Peter was the perfect person to have in on the conversation. Give it a listen. #StayCuriousMyFriends

Tom Anderson is a prolific professional vocal arranger who used to be an attorney. His career really took off when some guy from Oregon asked him to arrange a song for his college group. Tom stopped by my studio a few weeks back on his way to Memphis for NACC and we talked about how 4 Boyz from Philly started his acappella geekdom and a took a deep dive into vocal arranging where he talks about how instrumental orchestration has influenced his arranging style. Patreon is an amazing platform for both fans and creators alike because it flips the normal business model of how content is supported. Typically the audience is the real product that's sold to sponsors and advertisers, but on Patreon the content itself can become the product that's funded by the people who actually find value in it. Join us this week as we welcome American pop singer-songwriter-producer, Peter Hollens. Peter has been heavily involved with a cappella music since 1999 when he co-founded (with Leo da Silva) the University of Oregon's award-winning a cappella group On The Rocks, known as the first official collegiate a cappella group in Oregon. On The Rocks began a tradition of excellence in a genre that was previously unheard of in the Northwest. Originally from Ashland, Oregon, Peter graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. Since his graduation from the U of O, he has become very involved with collegiate a cappella, including recording, producing & judging international a cappella competitions throughout the United States. In 2010, Peter was featured on NBC’s The Sing Off season 2 receiving acclaim from The Sing-Off judges for solo performances leading the a cappella group On the Rocks. Peter records and produces from his home studio in Eugene, Oregon and recently recorded for Sony and Epic Records. He has performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Beacon Theatre in NYC. We will talk to Peter about his upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at his music, feature his latest songs, and ask him to share his message for the troops.
