Gary pays musical tribute to long-term friend and stalwart of the pipe band scene, Drum Major Alister 'Bo' Walker of both the Vale of Atholl and Atholl Highlanders pipe bands who sadly passed away this week after a long battle with illness. There are tunes too from the Simon Fraser University pipe band, from top uillean piping duo, Tiarnan O Duinnchinn and Cillian Vallely,  from Australian 'modern piping'  guru, Lincoln Hilton, and there's an upbeat cheery Fandango from Galician all-rounder, Christina Pato. Rounding off this week's menu, there's a very fine piece of musical storytelling from the Battlefield Band's vintage album, Anthem For the Common Man.If you would like to support the show by subscribing and becoming a Friend of the Podcast, you can do so hereSupport the showTracks PlayedTiarnan O Duinnchinn and Cillian Vallely, with Excerpt From the Singing Strings Part 3 from Live Recordings From the William Kennedy Festival Gary West with Drum Major Alister Walker, Atholl Highlanders (G West), Jimmy Menzies of Baledmund (Pete Clark), Glen Tilt (John Crerar), The Smith of Killiechassie, Miss Proud from The Piper and the Maker 2 - Celebrating C.Vale of Atholl Pipe Band with Eileen Mary Connolly (Martin Hughes), Mrs Stewart of Grandtully, The New Reel, O'Rourke's, Electric Chopsticks (RS MacDonald), Good Drying (RS MacDonald) from Live ‘N Well – The Motherwell ConcertCristina Pato with Fandango: Prueba de Fuego  from Latinahttp://www.cristinapato.com/en/Battlefield Band. Sadly, I have no pictures to show but some good news to share I've been researching my family history and can proudly say that I've been finding lots of Irish, Scottish and even Welsh ancestry. I have no problem sharing the names -  - Moon, Dunseath, Lowrie, Thomson, Dunn, etc. So your show helps me connect, in a way, to family long lost physically but coming to me in a spiritual and emotional way. Thanks and keep up the great work! " John Thompson wrote about episode #581: "Hey Marc, Just listened to the Irish & Celtic Music podcast episode 581 and I had a question. One of the last tracks was by Bren Holmes  -  -  a song called SOS. This is a cover song originally written and performed by the Swedish pop group ABBA around 1975 (yeah, I'm that old). I thought you had a policy about not playing covers as they're not "pod safe". It's a great song and I've heard MANY great covers performed at various festivals by various bands. It would be fantastic if you could play more but don't want you to get into any kind of trouble. I'm not quite sure how that works. If you could explain it briefly for your listeners maybe it would clear up the confusion." George Mears emailed: "Marc, I've been a listener since the early days and a patron for several years. The podcast has been my companion for road trips, yard work, construction projects, and career changes; also raising two sons and all the changes 17 years brings. I've written a few times, including in 2018 when my sister and I had our own Celtic Invasion of Scotland after the death of our parents, which you shared with my fellow listeners, thank you. I took a deep stroll through the podcast archive recently, going back to selected episodes through the years. While the music has always been wonderful, it was insightful to hear the difference in your voice, energy, and personal topics from those days. Your podcast has been a shared experience for we, the listeners. Thank you for the virtual weekly meet - up that has brought so much joy. I'll be among your patrons for the next 17 years. Slainte!"

BUY SELCOUTH BY MARC GUNN My latest CD features Sci F'Irish music. That means it is original songs fusing pop culture themes with Irish drinking songs. There are some traditional music on the album. But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason. Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. It's a fusion of the two. It's heartfelt and a lot of fun. It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Sounded like the Atlanta SPD parade was a cold one - Kansas City had wonderful weather, Sunny 74 that day. Estimated over 400,000 attended the parade that day. I made a wonderful corned beef and cabbage dinner that night - so good. I am hoping to catch a live show one day, probably in Texas as it's closer to KC. Twenty years of interviewing fabulous musicians is no mean feat and I thought it deserved some kind of celebration, or at least to be marked in history for posterity. So, I've recorded Cat O'nine Tales; nine special episodes of CATtales to look back on those early encounters where the recordings of the interviews no longer survive and the details only remain in written form. After introducing my guest, I'll give you a link address to read the interview and play some of their key hits for you to listen to whilst you enjoy it.  Thank you to you the listeners and my fabulous guests for your support over the years, I hope you enjoy these special 9 Tales. Tale 8: Karine Polwart's edgy and evocative writing and vocal poise have been steadily winning her respect and affection in the UK and internationally over the past six years as a member of traditional groups Malinky and Battlefield Band.  But now the Scottish Borders based singer-songwriter has established herself at the forefront of the UK folk-roots scene after scooping three prizes at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in February 2005. She's also a wonderfully genuine person. Here's how the triple-award winner now she sees the world.  This tale dates back to 30 August 2005, visit CATtales.co.uk/121 for the one with Karine Polwart and sit back and enjoy these tunes.

I've recently started collecting vinyl, however my Celtic record collection is much smaller than I like. It seems like alot of older artists are out of print and newer artists distribute mostly digitally. Are you aware of any resources to find groups, perhaps ones featured on your podcast that offer music in this format?" David Turner replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Hello Marc, Thank you so much for your podcast which has been a constant companion these past few months. It’s very weird listening to pre Covid episodes with you expressing all the freedom of looking ahead with anticipation! Ah weill . Now favourites could be a long list! However, I still get prickles remembering the immense, involuntary roar at the conclusion of a concert by The Battlefield Band in Port Fairy in 1991, a roar not generated in the vocal chords, but deep from the core, as Big Iain and Wee John finally brought their frenzied duet to a close, the entire tent vibrating and humming with exhilaration. Tears in my eyes again! Yes, what a band, so my fave Scottish band. Honorary mentions to Dick Gaughan, Aly Bain and Dougie McLain. To Ireland, and Mary Black. Now this choice could well be clouded by my intense infatuation, but her Song for Ireland stops me in my tracks every time. Andy Irvine is also a hero. Keep up the good work Marc, we need good people like you! Warm regards. David” Bill Wall emailed a photo: "Cead Mille Failte. (I probably misspelled that) I'd been meaning to subscribe for a while, but when I heard a few people drop off I knew I needed to step up. The music of your podcast stirs up many emotions in me. I have been sober for 5 years now, and I listen to your podcast driving to one of my favorite 12-step meetings about 40 minutes away from my house. For all of the Wild Roving I've done, with Celtic music in the background, it's great to hear the music on the way to centering myself. The drive is from my stereotypically suburban environment into a wooded canyon where we meet at a monastery. The monastery has green hills behind it for a beautiful hike, which reminds me of my time in Ireland. Since I know you like pictures, I thought I'd include these two. Thank you for all you do to keep bringing the happy war songs and sad love songs."

Why do old ballads endure? Does it make sense to sing about Willie and Mary, when our playgrounds are filled with Ozzies and Loxleys? Do we really need to say “my love is like a red, red rose,” or can’t we use a modern metaphor and call her really hot? Laura Cortese, Cathy Jordan, Sam Amidon, Robbie O’Connell, and Karan Casey help host Shannon Heaton explore old ballads in a dating app era. There’s plenty of music here, too. You do an excellent job putting together selections, and listening to an hour of the ICM podcasts is one of my great pleasures and I'm happy to be a subscriber. Right now, I'm listening to the podcast #324, Celtic in Connemara, and I think it's great that you want to learn to speak the language a little better. While I'm not a native speaker, I am an Irish-American with exposure to the language, and my pronunciation is pretty good. I'm glad to answer any questions you may have. Although many words look intimidating, it's really not that hard once you learn the rules of Irish orthography. You should probably know that the correct name of the language spoken in the Gaeltacht regions of Ireland is properly referred to in English as "Irish," and not Gaelic, as many people think, as "Gaelic" can mean Scottish Gaelic or even Manx. In Irish, the word for the language of course is "Gaeilge." Good luck with your Duolingo lessons, and I'll look forward to your continuing podcasts. Thanks so much for all you do."

Special thanks to our newest Patrons of the Podcast: Sean Mac Aodha, Kas, and our new Celtic Superstar, Hunter Melville. Years ago, a traditional Irish musician sat me down and told this autoharp-playing Renaissance festival musician what Celtic music really was. He gave me a list of popular trad musicians I should listen to. And I found some awesome bands in his list. That meeting was an important moment in my life. Because I did not see Celtic music the way he did. His definition narrowly defined traditional Irish music. For me, Celtic music is vast and growing. It encompasses the traditional songs and tunes as well as the contemporary arrangements that are more accessible to the average listener, like Celtic rock and even Celtic New Age. So when I started the Celtic Music Magazine and later the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. One of my goals was to share my definition of Celtic music as well as to help independent Celtic musicians. So this week I'm gonna share songs and tunes that I think will be a great intro to someone getting started with Celtic music. I picked some of my favorite bands and tunes. I got a little of input as well from my Patrons of the Podcast. Without my Patrons support this show would not have happened. I've been listening to your podcast for a few years now, and have always loved discovering new bands and artists every week. Last night, I had the wonderful opportunity to go see a show by a band called the Recollective, a fairly new Celtic group. I wasn't sure if you'd heard of them, but if not, you should definitely check them out!! They played an outstanding concert, and they were all very lovely people. Thanks so much for all your hard work in creating your awesome show! Also wanted to relate a great musical experience I got to share with my son Jackson (rising 9th grade violist) about a month ago. We got to see Mithril perform with the local Johnson City (TN) Symphony Orchestra. I got to talk a bit with the fiddler, Tom Morely, and let him know that I first heard their music on the Irish & Celtic Music podcast. The performance was doubly special to us, as three of the performers in the orchestra we know personally through the music school (Suzuki Talent Education of Appalachia), where my son and I take our viola lessons. Today's show is brought to you by Celtic Invasion Vacations Every year, I take Celtic music fans on an adventure of a lifetime. This is not your typical wham-bam-thank you m'aam tour. We travel in small groups. We explore the Celtic history of different regions. We don't need to see everything, because this is a vacation. Instead, our invasion brings out the relaxation and magic of our adventure. In 2018, you can join me on a Celtic Invasion of the Isle of Skye in Scotland. You can share this show and find more episodes at celticmusicpodcast.com. And you can support this show on Patreon. This week, we're doing a special on the Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games. I decided to do this feature as an extra way to financially support the event. You see, every time you buy one of our compilation CDs or make a pledge to the podcast on Patreon, I donate some of the money to Celtic non-profits. Many of them are non-profit Celtic festivals. Last fall, I sent the Texas Scottish Festival a donation. I thought it'd be nice to promote the event with a special feature, especially since I have permission from many of the artists who are performing at the festival. You can find out more about the artists at texasscottishfestival.com and you can attend the festival May 5-7, 2017 in Arlington, Texas. The first track was... Battlefield Band is not actually performing at the Texas Scottish Festival, but Brian McNeill, one of the founding members, is. And since I don't have permission to play any of his music, I thought that'd make a nice alternative. * CELTIC PODCAST NEWS If you are in a Celtic band and want to be featured on the podcast, it's easy to do. Just complete the permission form at 4celts.com. Then send me some music. If you work with a non-profit Celtic festival and want a donation or feature, just contact me. BATTLEFIELD BAND from Scotland has been performing on the international scene for more than three decades, and is one of the premier Celtic bands in the world. Founded in 1969 and named after the Battlefield area of Glasgow, the band pioneered the integration of bagpipes with fiddle, keyboards, guitar and voice, mixing the old songs and tunes with new self-penned material, playing them on a unique fusion of ancient and modern instruments. PAULY ZARB is originally from Australia. His home base is now Bardstown, KY while traveling the country performing his rootsy musical blend. His music combines keyboards, drums, hi-hat, guitar, flute, pan pipes, tin whistles, accordion, harmonica, digerridoo ... often all in the same song. He and his brother received the Best Folk Album award at the Queensland Sunny Music Awards in 2001.
