Today on “Post Reports” we dig into the string of bad news for Boeing and whether people should really be concerned about flying on one of Boeing's planes.Read more:In January, a piece of an Alaska Airlines jet fell off during a flight, opening a hole in the plane and causing a dramatic emergency landing. And ever since that blowout, public confidence in Boeing — the plane's manufacturer — has been in a tailspin. The Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into the incident. On Feb. 28, the Federal Aviation Administration gave the company 90 days to come up with a plan to fix the numerous quality control issues it discovered during an audit. There have been other incidents involving Boeing planes — both since the blowout and since well before it. Today on “Post Reports,” transportation reporter Ian Duncan takes us through the streak of bad headlines that have followed Boeing for years. And he breaks down whether we should really be concerned about flying in their planes. Today's show was produced by Emma Talkoff. It was mixed by Sean Carter. It was edited by Ted Muldoon. While Ian Duncan MacDonald is the author of two investment books, “Safer Better Dividend Investing” and “Income and Wealth from Self-Directed Investing”, He is also the author of three novels. Today he wants to introduce you to his novel, “DUEL”. For the last 5 days of April, 2021 a free eBook version of DUEL will be available at amazon.ca/DUEL-Rob-Lyons-1-ebook/dp/B07K6ZMF4In this podcast Ian will be reading Chapter 2 of DUEL. To set the scene, in Chapter 1 we learn that Rob Lyons, an analyst at the State Department, is being sent to the island of Saint Matts to investigate a televised interview by Texas Senator Rick Wilcox. That morning Wilcox stated that the People's Republic of China had secretly leased a long abandoned British naval base on the island. The Caribbean is the United States private lake. European nations have recognized this for more than a hundred years. The idea that an Asian power would dare establish a naval base in the Caribbean is outrageous. The senator has called for a nuclear bomb to be dropped on this traitorous island. For two decades there has been competitive rumblings and posturing between the United States and China. Within the a few years, China is expected to become the richest most powerful nation in the world. How will the United States adapt to losing the dominant primary position it has held for 100 years? The novel deals with a confrontation between the two powerful nations that explodes on the tiny, peaceful, impoverished Caribbean Island of Saint Matts. For decades, the Chinese have been supplying aid to the Caribbean. They filled an aid vacuum once filled by the United States when they feared the spread of Soviet communism.Politicians in Washington, St. Matts and China play important roles in this duel. Rob Lyons becomes caught up in the whirlwind of assassination, power, and romance that swirls around him.In Chapter two the scene opens in the Senator's office just hours after his televised interview. For more information on Ian MacDonald, his books and his art go to his website www.informus,ca
A deadline to end the war in Afghanistan. Biden’s vision for the future of infrastructure. Plus, how Native communities are tackling vaccinations. Read more:Biden announced that the United States will withdraw all troops from Afghanistan by Sept. 11, 2021. Missy Ryan explains that the decision tells us a lot about the administration’s priorities. “Nobody is going to say that the situation in Afghanistan is what anybody would have wanted in 2001 or 2011 or 2020. The government is incredibly fragile. The Taliban is very powerful, and the prospects for peace are very dubious,” she says. President Biden’s infrastructure plan calls for the federal government to take on a vast new role in funding the nation’s transportation networks, seeking to rebuild roadways and transit while battling climate change, racial injustice and traffic deaths. Transportation reporter Ian Duncan says the plan is not quite the easy bipartisan victory some may have hoped.Native Americans were vaccinated against smallpox and then pushed off their land. Reporter Dana Hedgpeth says this history has created generational trauma that tribes are working hard to counteract in their drive to vaccinate Native communities.
An FDA advisory committee has recommended authorization of the Pfizer vaccine and it will soon start making its way through the U.S., but some of the biggest hurdles still to overcome are mistrust in both the government and vaccines themselves. Polls are showing that many still do not want to take the vaccine as soon as it is available. This is especially evident in communities of color who are disproportionately affected by the coronavirus. We need about 70-75% of people to get vaccinated so that we can get on the road back to normal. Ian Duncan, reporter at the Washington Post, joins us for why many are taking the wait-and-see approach with the Covid vaccine. Next, a story about a Chinese spy targeting California politicians. Between 2011 and 2015 a Chinese intelligence operative named Christina Fang, developed extensive ties with local and national politicians including CA Congressman Eric Swalwell. It is not believed that Fang passed along any classified information to the Chinese government, but she did get very close to political power through campaign fundraising, extensive networking, and romantic or sexual relationships with at least two Midwestern mayors. Zach Dorfman, senior staff writer at the Aspen Institute and author of the Axios Codebook Newsletter, joins us for how this Chinese spy operated and was rooted out. As the COVID-19 pandemic has rippled through the US economy, one of the sectors most severely disrupted is transportation, from airlines and inter-city rail and bus lines to mass transit systems and,to a lesser extent, the trucking industry. For a perspective on how this vital sector of the economy is dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, and what relief it might expect from the latest economic stimulus package, we turn to Ian Duncan. He covers transportation for the Washington Post, and joins us on the phone.
If you were to write an historical novel about the Scottish hero-outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor, you’d probably make it about Roy Roy, right? Well, you are an amateur, because that, comrades, is just not how Walter Scott rolls -- which actually shows us why his theory of history is pretty sophisticated. His sprawling Rob Roy (1817) is in fact about a failson named Francis Osbaldistone, with world-historical figures and Rob Roy himself sword-fighting, kilt-wearing, and doing other manly-man things around the periphery. We’re talking Marxism and history, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century constructions of the nation, and how lots of Scott’s (brunette, “Celtic”) heroines are kinda domme-y. This is a deep dive into Tristan’s dorkdom, so buckle up. We read and highly recommend the Oxford edition edited by Ian Duncan. For more on Scott’s central role in nineteenth-century Scottish literature and modern conceptions of the nation, see Duncan’s marvelous Scott’s Shadow: The Novel in Romantic Edinburgh. Our outro music this week is “Donald MacGillivray,” a song about the Jacobite risings, by the Scottish folk band Silly Wizard, used with permission. Many thanks to the band! In 1896, Norwegian immigrant Helga Estby faced the foreclosure of her family's Washington farm. To pay the debt she accepted a wager to walk across the United States within seven months. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow her daring bid to win the prize, and its surprising consequence. We'll also toast Edgar Allan Poe and puzzle over a perplexing train. Intro: The Dutch and French words for kidney are reversals of one another. 1:43: Paula Gallagher, a Baltimore County librarian and Roughly Speaking book critic, recommends "Mozart's Starling," a non-fiction look at the great composer's relationship with a bird and how starlings, once favored as pets, came to be considered a nuisance in the United States.5:43: The General Assembly has authorized the state attorney general, Brian Frosh, to sue the Trump administration to protect Maryland’s interests — and Frosh is now empowered to do so without first getting the permission of the Governor. In his story about this in today’s Baltimore Sun, reporter Ian Duncan says the assembly left behind “a kind of night watchman” to keep an eye on Washington while the legislature is in recess. But what actions by the Trump administration would prompt Frosh and other Democratic attorneys general to go to court? We’ll also hear of efforts to stop price gouging by pharmaceutical companies and how the state legislature reformed a bail system that Frosh believes would ultimately have been found to be unconstitutional.Links:https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/lyanda-lynn-haupt/mozarts-starling/9780316370875/http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bs-md-frosh-success-20170411-story.htmlhttp://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bs-md-attorney-general-powers-20170416-story.htmlhttp://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/editorial/bs-ed-drug-prices-20170326-story.htmlhttp://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/crime/bs-md-bail-frosh-20161011-story.html
