In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

This week the spotlight is on a 1965 folk jangler by The Guilloteens: "I Don't Believe" is a raw, blue-eyed soul vocal outing reminiscent of the Righteous Brothers. They shoulda been on The Flintstones!! In 1966, The Five of Us came out with the first cover version. It's less raw, but it's smooth as Kraft Creamy! The same year, The Moonrakers pepped the song up considerably and made it into a toe-tapper. The song returned to Memphis in 2002 when Reigning Sound payed homage to their 60s forebears. It's a pretty muscular version, but the vocals are soft & sensitive. You'll feel no pain!!

Un nuevo tema de los fantásticos The Youngers abre hoy para dejar paso a dos excelentes versiones de country de los 90 en el nuevo volumen 2 de los American Aquarium. Kieran Ridge y sus Moonrakers tocan americana acústica desde Boston (por eso suenan como irlandeses), cercana a los tejanos Jamestown Revival que hacen una mezcla de country sureño, americana y música western. Otra de las grandes novedades es por fin ya el disco de John Mellencamp, con colaboraciones de Bruce Springsteen, que ofrece su versión radical de la cultura estadounidense que evoca tiempos más oscuros antes de que naciera el compositor que tiene ya 70 años. Los Lumineers finalmente presentan un disco flojillo (al menos para nosotros) aunque para no romper la atmósfera suave, recuperamos de ayer a Malcolm Holcombe con sus piezas casi acústicas. Y el final newmexicano de Dean Owens también le pega de sobra al ambiente plomizo que parece haberse quedado.The Youngers, Cat EyesAmerican Aquarium, That Ain't My TruckAmerican Aquarium, Money in the BankKieran Ridge & the Moonrakers, The Last One to KnowKieran Ridge & the Moonrakers, Straight to the Heart of LoveJamestown Revival, These DaysJamestown Revival, Slow It DownJohn Mellencamp, Did You Say Such A ThingJohn Mellencamp, Lie To MeThe Lumineers, BirthdayThe Lumineers, RepriseMalcolm Holcombe, Crazy Man BluesMalcolm Holcombe, Good IntentionsDean Owens, New Mexicop { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 115%; background: transparent }

Many of us creatives have diverse interests and passions. Yet, often enough, we find ourselves spending our time and energy doing client work and leaving our passion projects on the backburner. But what if it's actually that client work that can make your personal projects a reality? Today’s guest has mastered doing just that. In his episode, I’m chatting with Zac Dixon, the creative director and founder of IV Studio and previously the host of the Animalators Podcast. As prolific as ever, Zac has been doing a ton of awesome things including making a new board game called Moonrakers.  With so many different projects in the works at one time, Zac tells how it can only happen through the power of teamwork. Having surrounded himself with other passionate and dedicated people, Zac and his team have been able to produce some really impressive passion projects. Zac shares how he decides which projects are worth pursuing and which are going to be the most rewarding. Creating your own work is going to require some level of marketing if you want it to make a profit. Zac has learned a lot about marketing simply by being a motion designer. This has helped him make these projects a success, but it has also helped him gain a better understanding when working with clients as well. As someone who has been on both sides of the table, Zac shares some great thoughts on getting noticed and hired by studios and clients in a crowded field. From the best types of reels to have in your portfolio, to what type of references are most valuable, this is great advice for any freelancer looking for more work.   In this episode Leveraging teamwork to make passion projects a reality Determining which creative ideas are worth pursuing How being a motion designer can prepare you to do your own marketing How to best utilize your portfolio to get the attention of clients and studios Fitting in your side projects when working on other gigs The payoffs that come with branching out into new skillsets Building your company up to be bigger than just yourself Quotes “I really want to take as many shots as we can at making things that we love and that we’re proud of. I think that feeds into everything else that we’re doing.” [6:11] “Anything you can do to just make sure at the very least that [potential clients] are watching what you want them to watch and reading what you want them to read is huge. They need to latch on quick.” [25:29] “Figure out what you want to do and just chip away at it. Put a little bit into it each day and eventually you’ll get there.” [37:46] “Having a range of experiences will only make you a better creator. It will also give you a better pool of diverse experiences to pull into any work that you do.” [39:43] Links Find Zac Dixon online Follow Zac on Twitter | Instagram Animalators Podcast Moonrakers Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World by David Epstein Giant Ant   Get the Freelance Contract Bundle   Thanks for Listening! In this episode we learned about the legend of the Moonrakers. The text has been taken in part from my Kindle book 'Wiltshire von A bis Z', which you may wish to buy if you want to learn more about wonderful Wiltshire in the UK and want to read in German: http://geni.us/3G2o Here are the German sentences again: Laut Legende hatten Schmuggler ihre Alkoholfässer im Crammer Teich versteckt, damit die Steuereintreiber sie nicht finden. Loved it! I'll have to go pick up the cd. Keep up the amazing work with the podcast! Don't worry, I also listen to the new episodes but regularly return to the early ones that fueled my budding obsession with Celtic music in middle school. I hope to see you live sometime in New Orleans! I saw Beth Patterson play at a restaurant a few months ago and recognized her voice immediately. Unfortunately I was too star struck to tell her that I had listened to her "Ye Jacobites By Name" (my favorite rendition) for years on your podcast. Thank you for everything you do for independent Celtic artists, you have introduced me to many musicians who are now near and dear to my heart. I wanted to say thank you very much for sharing my first single on your page, I really really appreciate that. Good luck with everything and have a great day!" Victoria Mathis emailed on Facebook: "Hello, I just wanted to answer your request for messages tonight. You're my favorite evening Irish and Celtic music channel on Roku.  The music you play often reminds me of my Irish Grandmother who would sing many family songs, some were great old drinking tunes too. My very Scottish Grandfather would laugh along to her funny songs and play his auto harp. We would sing and laugh drinking our root beer ice cream floats while the adults enjoyed their beverages too. I miss those days while I still enjoy doing the exact same traditions with my modern era family. Keep up the awesome work, you remind me of the words of a forgotten song at least once a night." Carl Garman emailed a photo on Facebook: "I've been listening to your podcasts for almost two years now and I love them. I listen to them while making powder horns. It's relaxing just listening to the music while doing something from the 17th &18th century's. Thank you for bring this to us. Keep up the great work!"

Glad to be part of the Celtic Music Mag list - don't know why it took me so long to join!  I've been listening to your podcast for YEARS!!!!!  I did receive the free MP3 tunes with no problems!  I've added them to my music library of over 5500 tunes so they are in good company! Just a tiny bit about me - I'm a recently retired engineer in Huntsville, Alabama and was an amateur whistle player in the Celtic community here.  I used to play with some of the members of SlipJig and Black Market Haggis during the old Finnegan's Pub open sessions until the pub closed.  While I've let my whistle skills wither, I've kept up with the world of Celtic Music and thoroughly enjoy listening to your show and Thistle & Shamrock.  I've always felt that mix gave me the broadest exposure to new and old tunes, musicians, etc.  There's just something about Celtic music, whether Irish, Scottish, Galician, Welsh, etc. that just grabs you and won't let go. Please keep up the good work you do to showcase the latest and greatest musicians out there. Slainte!"
