It's time to go back to the summer of 1997 with the British comedy and Dave's pick for the week, The Full Monty. Directed by Peter Cattaneo and written by Simon Beaufoy, the film was shot on a tight budget of £3.5 million in Sheffield, England, the industrial city where the story is set. The choice of location was pivotal, as it allowed the filmmakers to authentically depict the struggles of a working-class community hit hard by economic decline. The production team used local landmarks and worked with real residents to add an extra layer of realism to the film. Despite financial constraints, the crew maximized resources, crafting a story that was both intimate and universal. Casting played a crucial role in bringing the film to life, with Robert Carlyle leading the ensemble as Gaz. Many of the actors were lesser-known at the time, which lent authenticity to their portrayals of everyday men grappling with unemployment and self-doubt. The iconic final striptease scene was a nerve-wracking challenge for the cast, as it required them to overcome their own anxieties to deliver a pivotal, uplifting moment. Set to a soundtrack of classic tunes like Hot Chocolate's You Sexy Thing and Tom Jones's You Can Leave Your Hat On, the film captured a perfect blend of humor and pathos. To the surprise of its creators, The Full Monty became a sleeper hit, earning over $250 million worldwide and multiple awards, including an Oscar for Beaufoy's screenplay. They hatch a bold plan to perform a one-night-only striptease act to earn quick cash. Led by the charming but down-on-his-luck Gaz, the ragtag group includes his best friend Dave, who battles body image issues, and Gerald, their former boss hiding his own unemployment. As they awkwardly rehearse their routine, the men bond over their shared struggles, discovering newfound confidence and camaraderie. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

Slumdog Millionaire: How to Use Circular Storytelling in Your B2B Marketing

If your marketing team keeps talking in circles about what to do next with your B2B marketing initiatives, then we have an idea for you. Stop talking in circles and start telling stories in circles. That's right – circles. Stick with us here. Hollywood has a tried-and-true method for hooking your audience from the first frame: circular storytelling. If you can leverage this technique effectively, your marketing content can stand out from the crowd – no matter if it's a case study, a white paper, or a social video. In this episode, we break down the use of circular storytelling in Slumdog Millionaire and discuss how to apply this technique to your B2B marketing.About Slumdog MillionaireSlumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British drama directed by Danny Boyle, co-directed by Loveleen Tandan, and starring Dev Patel and Freida Pinto. Simon Beaufoy wrote the screenplay, which is based on Vikas Swarup's novel, Q & A. The story follows orphan Jamal Malik, who is selected to be a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire – only to be accused of cheating when he's one question away from winning the grand prize of 20M Rupees. The movie has won numerous awards, including Academy Award for Best Picture, Music, Writing, Directing, and Sound Mixing (2009) and many, many others. What's Circular Storytelling?Circular storytelling is a mechanism in which the story literally ends where it began – with the same exact scene. This device hooks the audience at a point of high tension and personal crisis for the main character. Then, the movie flashes back to the opening of the narrative.Slumdog Millionaire opens with Jamal Malik being interrogated and tortured after being accused of cheating on the game show. Through the use of flashbacks, we discover exactly how he knew the answers to each question. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Slumdog Millionaire: Start your customer journey at the end. Document customer stories from the very beginning. By doing this, you can show prospective customers real results you've achieved with current ones, and how you could benefit their business. Give them customer success stories, so that they can envision their future as your customer. In Slumdog Millionaire, we know that Jamal will get to the penultimate question on Who Wants to be a Millionaire – because that's where the story begins. By spelling out the many benefits your company has to offer, you are providing your new customers proof that your organization creates results.Hook ad viewers with a high-intensity intro. Bring them in the middle of the action to grab their attention. For example, you can highlight a common pain point your business can solve – and then use circular storytelling. Slumdog Millionaire starts with Jamal being brutally interrogated on how he knew the game show answers. From this moment, the central mystery of the film is established: if Jamal did not cheat, then how did he know all the answers? Similarly, highlighting a pain point Just like viewers wondered how a slumdog could know the answers, you'll have them wondering how you can solve all their pain points for them.Key Quotes*”That's always a plus point in any movie, TV show, story or ad that you're reading or watching. If you're thrown right in the middle of it, chances are you're going to be engaged from the start. - Anagha Das*”Everything has to start on a bang. And whether that takes you back to where you started or whether it's more just a great hook, jumping in on a bang is just something that works. If you don't have [a hook,] you're hard pressed to actually keep people along for the ride.” - Dane Eckerle*”I've seen this in case studies where they have the results at the beginning. And then it unfolds as to how they got those results. There is a huge opportunity to do this kind of storytelling in B2B marketing.” - Colin Stamps*”You should be doing circular storytelling with your case studies, with your customer stories, with your demos, with your prospect journey.” - Ian FaisonTime Stamps[3:19] Tell me more about Slumdog Millionaire[7:05] What is circular storytelling?[10:13] Are there any drawbacks to using circular storytelling?[11:46] How do you apply mystery to your marketing campaign?[16:31] What are examples of circular storytelling in B2B?[18:30] How can you apply this to your B2B marketing? [22:12] Other examples in B2C marketingLinksWatch Slumdog MillionaireSee how Mr. Beast hooks viewersLook at how Gary Vee uses flashbacks on his predictionsCheck out how we've used circular storytelling ourselves in The Hacker Chronicles podcastAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. This week Planty is fanboying over man made stretches of Water and John-Boy is destroying his algorythm with facts about the Chippendales (Not the Rescue Rangers!). --- The Full Monty is a 1997 British comedy film directed by Peter Cattaneo, starring Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, William Snape, Steve Huison, Tom Wilkinson, Paul Barber and Hugo Speer. The screenplay was written by Simon Beaufoy. The film is set in Sheffield, England during the 1990s, and tells the story of six unemployed men, four of them former steel workers, who decide to form a male striptease act (à la the Chippendale dancers) in order to make some money and for the main character, Gaz, to be able to see his son. Gaz declares that their show will be much better than the renowned Chippendales dancers because they will go "the full monty"—strip all the way—hence the film's title. Despite being a comedy, the film also touches on serious subjects such as unemployment, fathers' rights, depression, impotence, homosexuality, body image, working class culture and suicide. The Full Monty was a major critical success upon release and an international commercial success, grossing over $250 million from a budget of only $3.5 million. It was the highest-grossing film in the UK until it was outsold by Titanic. It won the BAFTA Award and European Film Award for Best Film, and was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Musical or Comedy Score, winning the last. The British Film Institute ranked The Full Monty the 25th best British film of the 20th century. The film was adapted into a musical in 2000 and a play in 2013.

‘Slumdog Millionaire' makes for a fascinating case study of a writer working with the spirit of a rich novel and adapting it into a screenplay that tells a much-changed but still familiar story - which made it a perfect candidate for The 21st Rewrite (William Coldwell and Alan Vazquez) to analyse this week. We consider the original source material (‘Q&A' by Vikas Swarup) and compare it to Simon Beaufoy's script and the final version of the story as presented in Danny Boyle's film. It is ultimately a tale of triumph, set against the background of modernising India, starring Dev Patel as Jamal Malik, the boy who dares to dream that he can win the love of his childhood sweetheart against all odds. *** Want to comment, get news and join episode discussions? With Francine Stock. Slumdog Millionaire and The Full Monty writer Simon Beaufoy tells Francine Stock about The Battle Of The Sexes and why it wasn't love all between tennis players Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, when he challenged her in 1973 to prove that a woman could play as well as a man. Beaufoy reveals why he would make the film much harder hitting now in the light of the revelations of sexual harassment in the film industry and shares his experiences at the hands of Harvey Weinstein. Neil Brand explains how Alien changed the sound of science fiction in his new series, Game Changers. Sandra Hebron and Briony Hanson slug it out to get their chosen directors, Yasujiro Ozu and Francois Ozon, for a place in The Film Programme's A to Z of film-makers.

With Kirsty Lang. Sixteen years ago a small British film, set in Sheffield, about a group of redundant steelworkers who decide that stripping could be a way out of their problems, became an international hit. As The Full Monty makes its stage debut, the writer Simon Beaufoy talks to Kirsty about why he wants to turn a celluloid success into theatre gold. The first artist to be announced for this year's Glastonbury festival was singer Rokia Traore from Mali. And in an intended act of solidarity with the war-torn country, Malian bands will open the Pyramid stage each day of the festival. Kirsty talks to Rokia Traore, and to Salif Keita, one of the earliest Malian performers to become an international star, about their new albums and the role of musicians in Mali now. The bestselling New York author John Green's latest novel The Fault In Our Stars has attracted a great deal of attention, because it deals with a young girl suffering advanced stages of cancer yet manages to be a darkly humorous read. John Green discusses the background to the novel, which came to him while working as a chaplain in a children's hospital, and how he found the voice of the protagonist, Hazel. Producer Ellie Bury.

In Episode 35 of Fireside Chat, in addition to our regular line-up of fan site representatives and other Hunger Games experts, we're joined by four amazing guest panelists: the Schmoes Know guys (noted film critics who cater their reviews to us "regular folk"), Sarah Brannen (children's author and illustrator) and Tim Koleto (up and coming figure skater and passionate Hunger Games fan). We kick off the show by discussing the new still of Haymitch, Cinna, and Peeta that was released in the latest issue of People magazine (and announce the winners of Down with the Capitol's caption contest). We also weigh in on the news that Lionsgate is courting Simon Beaufoy (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire) to write the screenplay for Catching Fire. We spend the rest of the show "grab bagging" it and pulling all sorts of exciting subjects -- from Crackpot Theories and Cave, Marry, Kills to What Ifs? and listener-submitted questions -- out of our topic cornucopia. We conclude by sharing a listener-submitted poem and talking about what Hunger Games-related stuff we -- and our listeners -- are thankful for this year.

Programledare: Roger Wilson
