Adhrucia Apana (@adhrucia) is a Filmmaker and a Founder of the production company Curiosity Entertainment/GP of Curiosity Media Finance. Curiosity is home to the next production from famed television creator Mark Williams (Ozark) and "Funny Girl" written by Anthony McCarten (Theory of Everything, Bohemian Rhapsody) to be directed by Nisha Ganatra (High Note, Late Night). Her creative slate for Curiosity includes projects in conjunction with the Neese Brothers (The Umbrella Academy), Kevin Fox (Law & Order SVU, Raising Kanan), and a co-production with Alcon Entertainment and Nazrin Choudhary (Fear of the Walking Dead). Adhrucia's releases include the EMMY nominated, "The Survivor" starring Ben Foster directed by Barry Levinson, "Capone" starring Tom Hardy, and "Needle in a Timestack" starring Cynthia Ervo, Leslie Odom Jr, Orlando Bloom, and Freida Pinto-directed by John Ridley which she Executive Produced. Adhrucia has worked as an Executive in Film/TV supporting over 30 film and television shows. She graduated Cum Laude from the prestigious Carl H Linder Business Scholars program and is a conservatory-trained vocalist and thespian. Adhrucia is an active member of the diversity initiative lovingly called "Stone Soup" started by Rotten Tomatoes founder Patrick Lee and Goldhouse focused on elevating Asian and South Asian voices in the Entertainment Industry and beyond, and has served or been an advocate and volunteer for Los Angeles based non-profits Young Storytellers and Project Paper Bag. She is a founding member of the Producers Guild of America's Social Impact in Entertainment (SIE) board and an Advisory Board Member to the MOVE Network NFT Platform. What Travis and Adhrucia discussed: Adhrucia knew from a young age that she wanted to be a storyteller. Growing up traveling and being exposed to different cultures, she found that books, music, and TV shows were a common language that helped her connect with people from all backgrounds. This early passion for storytelling never left her, even when she pursued business in college. To succeed in Hollywood, you have to want it more than everybody else. Adhrucia stresses that it's not about talent, connections or who you know - it's about determination. The people who make it are the ones who simply want it the most and are willing to work harder than anyone else to achieve it. Learn the business side of your creative industry. Adhrucia went back to learn the money and economics of the entertainment business, even though she was initially allergic to anything financial. This allowed her to better understand how to create and sell her work, and gave her more creative freedom. Have confidence in a backup skill. Knowing she could rely on being a good salesperson or e-commerce entrepreneur gave Adhrucia the confidence to fully commit to producing instead of playing it safe with a side hustle. Develop expertise in multiple skills to increase your confidence. Redefine what success looks like for you. Adhrucia encourages creators to see money made from art, whether on YouTube, Vimeo or elsewhere, as success - not just traditionally-defined achievements like Oscars. Reframe your definition of success within your industry. To hear Adhrucia's story and advice for succeeding in entertainment straight from her, check out the full conversation on the Travis Makes Friends podcast. In the Fall of 2022, Richard Raymond, British Filmmaker, graduated from the Hoffman Process. Yes, Richard is a filmmaker, but as you'll discover listening to this conversation with Liz, Richard is a masterful storyteller.  and boy does he have stories to tell. From a very young age, films enthralled Richard. When he realized he wanted to be involved in making films, he took action. To that end, he made his own introduction to the world of filmmaking. Then, as he followed his heart's vision, he learned from amazing actors, directors, and other filmmaking artists (see some listed below). Eventually, his vision led him to Australia and then America. Two main threads weave this conversation together. The threads are finding where we belong and learning to trust one's creative voice enough to give it free rein. Through his rich storytelling, Richard takes us along on his journey of finding belonging from childhood to those seven days at the Process. Eventually, at the end of this conversation, you'll hear the wisdom of belonging Richard has discovered. You'll also hear how he came to trust in himself and his voice as an artist through the deep work of the Process. This was one of the biggest gifts and takeaways from Richard's week at the Hoffman Process. More about Richard Raymond: Richard Raymond is a British filmmaker known for his visually striking and emotionally impactful works. Born and raised in London, to a Jewish Indian family, Raymond developed a love for film from a young age and began making his own short films at the age of 15. In 2015, he made his feature film debut with "Desert Dancer,” starring Freida Pinto, a biographical drama about the Iranian dancer Afshin Ghaffarian, which premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and received critical acclaim. Raymond's follow-up film, “Souls of Totality”, was released in 2018 and starred Tatiana Maslany. It was the first film in history to be shot during a real solar eclipse. The film won awards at 12 International Film Festivals and was long-listed for the Oscar. In 2020, Raymond directed “A Million Eyes”, which was released to widespread praise for its thought-provoking and visually stunning portrayal of a young gifted photographer. As a filmmaker, Raymond is not only dedicated to his craft but also to giving back to the community. Through organizations such as YoungArts, he is a fierce advocate for arts education for young people in underprivileged areas and has taken on the role of mentor to many young artists who may not have had access to guidance and support otherwise. Additionally, Raymond has made a significant impact in the autism community through the creation of the Celebrity Chef Gala for Autism Speaks. Over the past 15 years, this event has raised $16 million to support its efforts to provide solutions for individuals with autism and their families throughout all stages of life. On this week's episode of "It Sure is a Beautiful Day" Catt is joined by critically acclaimed actress Freida Pinto. It's easy to be a mega fan of this extremely smart, talented, and gorgeous female from movies like Slumdog Millionaire, Hillbilly Elegy, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but it's her spirit and kindness we get to know today. In this deeply personal in-person conversation, Freida opens up, possibly for the first time, about her miscarriage that left her devastated emotionally and wrecked physically. Now a mother of her almost two-year-old son, Rumi, she is an avid advocate of post-partum awareness and now educates and informs as Chief Impact Officer at Anya. We hear about Freida's motherhood journey but also learn intimate details about her relationship with her husband Cory. How she literally manifested the partner of her dreams and how they work on their marriage as new parents and try to stay connected during demanding times. Relatable! Then, after hearing about Freida's upbringing in Mumbai, we talk about her rocket fast catapult to fame after Slumdog Millionaire, the challenges of working in Hollywood as a person of color, and how she's found purpose and meaning in her work with her production company, Freebird Films. Slumdog Millionaire: How to Use Circular Storytelling in Your B2B Marketing

Remarkable Marketing

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 9, 2023 25:58

If your marketing team keeps talking in circles about what to do next with your B2B marketing initiatives, then we have an idea for you. Stop talking in circles and start telling stories in circles. That's right – circles. Stick with us here. Hollywood has a tried-and-true method for hooking your audience from the first frame: circular storytelling. If you can leverage this technique effectively, your marketing content can stand out from the crowd – no matter if it's a case study, a white paper, or a social video. In this episode, we break down the use of circular storytelling in Slumdog Millionaire and discuss how to apply this technique to your B2B marketing.About Slumdog MillionaireSlumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British drama directed by Danny Boyle, co-directed by Loveleen Tandan, and starring Dev Patel and Freida Pinto. Simon Beaufoy wrote the screenplay, which is based on Vikas Swarup's novel, Q & A. The story follows orphan Jamal Malik, who is selected to be a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire – only to be accused of cheating when he's one question away from winning the grand prize of 20M Rupees. The movie has won numerous awards, including Academy Award for Best Picture, Music, Writing, Directing, and Sound Mixing (2009) and many, many others. What's Circular Storytelling?Circular storytelling is a mechanism in which the story literally ends where it began – with the same exact scene. This device hooks the audience at a point of high tension and personal crisis for the main character. Then, the movie flashes back to the opening of the narrative.Slumdog Millionaire opens with Jamal Malik being interrogated and tortured after being accused of cheating on the game show. Through the use of flashbacks, we discover exactly how he knew the answers to each question. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Slumdog Millionaire: Start your customer journey at the end. Document customer stories from the very beginning. By doing this, you can show prospective customers real results you've achieved with current ones, and how you could benefit their business. Give them customer success stories, so that they can envision their future as your customer. In Slumdog Millionaire, we know that Jamal will get to the penultimate question on Who Wants to be a Millionaire – because that's where the story begins. By spelling out the many benefits your company has to offer, you are providing your new customers proof that your organization creates results.Hook ad viewers with a high-intensity intro. Bring them in the middle of the action to grab their attention. For example, you can highlight a common pain point your business can solve – and then use circular storytelling. Slumdog Millionaire starts with Jamal being brutally interrogated on how he knew the game show answers. From this moment, the central mystery of the film is established: if Jamal did not cheat, then how did he know all the answers? Similarly, highlighting a pain point Just like viewers wondered how a slumdog could know the answers, you'll have them wondering how you can solve all their pain points for them.Key Quotes*”That's always a plus point in any movie, TV show, story or ad that you're reading or watching. And then it unfolds as to how they got those results. There is a huge opportunity to do this kind of storytelling in B2B marketing.” - Colin Stamps*”You should be doing circular storytelling with your case studies, with your customer stories, with your demos, with your prospect journey.” - Ian FaisonTime Stamps[3:19] Tell me more about Slumdog Millionaire[7:05] What is circular storytelling?[10:13] Are there any drawbacks to using circular storytelling?[11:46] How do you apply mystery to your marketing campaign?[16:31] What are examples of circular storytelling in B2B?[18:30] How can you apply this to your B2B marketing? [22:12] Other examples in B2C marketingLinksWatch Slumdog MillionaireSee how Mr. Beast hooks viewersLook at how Gary Vee uses flashbacks on his predictionsCheck out how we've used circular storytelling ourselves in The Hacker Chronicles podcastAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. This week we're hitting it Greek style, as Superman takes on the titans all while we discuss the third film in Tarsem SIngh's filmography ‘Immortals' with the help of patron of the show David Powell! Immortals is a 2011 American fantasy action film directed by Tarsem Singh and starring Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Luke Evans, John Hurt, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, Freida Pinto, Joseph Morgan, Daniel Sharman, and Mickey Rourke. The film was previously named Dawn of War and War of the Gods before being officially named Immortals. It uses motifs of the Greek myths of Theseus, the return of the Heraclids, the Minotaur, and the Titanomachy, but the plot does not resemble any coherent narrative originating from Greek mythology. Actor, activist, and Story + Rain cover star Freida Pinto, known for acclaimed films such as Slumdog Millionaire and Trishna, returns to the screen this summer in the delightful Mr. Malcolm's List, a movie that shakes up what we've come to know as the period genre in film. The new mother is fiercely focused when it comes to her work, and in episode 106, Freida explains how and why her production company, Freebird Films, seeks out projects that allow her to tell stories that “angle towards hope”---they're about to make some big moves. Listen in as Freida discusses the stories she believes are lacking on the screen, how she prepares for a role, her desire to step far out of herself for them, and her preference to remain on the go, on any given project. You'll hear intimate stories about the many prolific directors she's worked with like Ron Howard, Danny Boyle, Terrence Malick, and Woody Allen---as well as what it's like working with first-time director, actor Kristen Scott Thomas, on My Mother's Wedding, which she is currently shooting, co-starring Scarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller---one of the most fun casts she's ever been a part of. Freida talks about her most taxing roles, shares stories from set and the valued relationships she's created there, including a surprisingly sweet story about Sir Anthony Hopkins. We talk motherhood, her work with postpartum plan and brand, Anya, and what it's like to be part of a creative couple. We get into details about Mr. Malcolm's List, her latest film, out on July 1st. We cover everything from its modern and inclusive international vibe, to the notion of having a checklist when looking for a partner, and how and when she's created one for herself. We go back to the beginning: her school days, her modeling days (and why she disliked it), and all things her very first film and smash hit, 2008's Slumdog Millionaire. Inspiration, living internationally, how series and film have converged, and more. And a lot of it is who you know and who you can get into the hands of that is going to help you reach the next hurdle.” “That's the thing that I think is great about creating is… you can do it and no one has to give you permission.” Resources: To sign up for classes with Jenny, visit (www.stowestorylabs.org) or (www.stowestorylabs.org/writers-room) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
