POPULARITY
Amidst the whirlwind of fame and adrenaline in the skateboarding world of the 1980s, Mark "Gator" Rogowski's unique style and creative tricks dominated the scene, making him a household name and a hero to aspiring skaters everywhere. His presence at any event guaranteed a spectacle, as he seemed to possess an almost supernatural ability to defy the laws of physics. Yet, as the adage goes, "what goes up, must come down." Because beneath the surface of Gator's seemingly perfect life, darker issues lurked. Personal struggles and erratic behavior began to overshadow his achievements, and the same intensity that once fueled his success on the ramps drove him to commit a heinous act of brutality against an innocent 21-year-old woman named Jessica Bergsten. Jessica's tragic death, and the violence that she suffered in her final moments, was absolutely horrific, and shocked not just her devastated family and the skateboarding community, but the entire world. Two games about American youths wasting their lives. Two games with various ties to Atari. Coincidence? Yes, actually. Sometimes, this stuff just happens. Skate or Die! may bear the Ultra Games branding, but it really owes its existence to Electronic Arts—and ultimately, to the former Epyx crew that EA hired up when Atari Corp. sabotaged that company. And while Paperboy for NES comes to us from Mindscape, the original game debuted in arcades under the Atari Games label, only to be converted to NES by Tengen (AKA Atari Corp.), who was also filing charges against Nintendo and pilfering documents in order to attempt to sabotage THAT company. It's like poetry... it rhymes. Production note: NES footage captured from @Analogue Mini. Video upscaled to 720 with XRGB Mini Framemeister.
The Interview: Kyle Beachy has been skateboarding for as long as he's been creating stories. For him, the two have always been intertwined. After releasing the coming-of-age novel The Slide in 2009, he began to write more seriously about skateboarding, as aficionado, critic, and essayist. A decade's worth of this material is now included in The Most Fun Thing (Grand Central Publishing), his second, book-length collection. The Most Fun Thing delves deep into skateboarding's origins and ethos. What is skateboarding? What does it mean to continue skateboarding after the age of 40, four decades after the kickflip was invented? How does one live authentically as an adult while staying true to a passion hatched in childhood? How does skateboarding shape one's understanding of contemporary American life? Contemplating these questions and more, Beachy offers a deep exploration of a pastime—often overlooked, regularly maligned—whose seeming simplicity conceals universal truths.Beachy is a professor of English and Creative Writing at Roosevelt University in Chicago, where he has taught for more than a decade. He sat down with J.C. Gabel earlier this fall to discuss the new book, nonfiction vs. fiction writing, and how exactly skateboarding has shaped his life. The Reading: Kyle Beachy reads from his latest collection, The Most Fun Thing. Music by Hieroglyphics
This week I look back on my relationship with skateboarding, new mystery downloads in the longest episode yet!
I had been thinking how I wanted to broaden my listeners/viewers and reach the skateboarding community and who better to do that with than Alex Camarillo him self! Skateboarding for me was and always will be a huge part of my life. Got me through dark times and made me feel part of a community when I didn't feel like I fit in anywhere else. Please enjoy this episode where Alex and I talk our first love, what about skateboarding it is that we love so much. The fact that it is now considered an Olympic event! Lastly, we talk Alex's boxing career and he surprises us with some big fighting news! Thank you! Enjoy!
Westin and Brett open up these nice tight pages and go through a magical Nintendo journey. Going over Wrestling, Captain Nintendo, Zelda 2, Skate or Die, Howard and Nester take a turn to the sinister, some great marble talk, Operation Wolf is forgettable, more sports, Metal Gear, a cool Nintendo accessory, and that's about it. This descriptive enough for you Westin?

There were so many bad games on the NES. I love that little grey box, but I'd say 70-75% of the library was forgettable. And Skate or Die is one of those bad games. But for whatever reason, it isn't forgettable. It seems like EVERYONE played this game at least once or twice. And honestly, once or twice was enough. This game suuuucks haha. My buddy Brad returns to RTG Industries this week, and we talk about the dope soundtrack, the great...box art. The title screen was nice. And the we shit all over everything after you press start, because...ugh. Great title screen, though. And before we talk Skating and Dying, it's time for another edition of the 'Remember The Game Infamous Intro'! This time around, I talk about some games that I've done a 180 on since I launched the podcast. We talk about gaming burnout. And we discuss whether or not Epic did anything wrong by copying the Among Us formula and putting it into Fortnite Imposters. PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring Super Dodgeball, Cool Boarders 2 and Wave Race 64! Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us!
