In this powerful episode, Uruguayan American author and cultural force Caro De Robertis joins host Saadia Khan to explore the deeply personal and political stories behind ‘So Many Stars'', an oral history honoring queer and trans elders of color. Caro reflects on estrangement, resilience, chosen family, and the defiant joy that shapes queer immigrant narratives. From growing up across continents to reclaiming identity through storytelling, this conversation is a radiant celebration of memory, voice, and liberation. Whether you're a parent, activist, or storyteller, Caro's insights will move you to think differently about history, identity, and the power of being seen. Every known planet, moon, and asteroid in our solar system occupies a volume of space both enormous and yet tiny compared to the vast empty gulf between stars. "Throwing a party it's like... it's like an invitation for abuse. It's like the last desperate act of someone who hasn't had a lasting relationship since Junior High." - Monica Sooooooooooooo.........New Year's Eve was very different this year. Covid19 has parties squashed, but that is no reason you couldn't find a way to ring in 2021 with some fun! Andrea and Melissa joined this virtual NYE set in the 80s ,by digging out the well-loved DVD - 200 Cigarettes. Through recording this episode, we discovered that this movie has become a rare vintage gem! 200 Cigarettes is not streaming or On Demand, but you can go old school and buy the DVD on eBay for a pretty penny. The cast in this movie had us laughing out loud and reminiscing about the early careers of SO MANY STARS! What a great way to virtually party and get our New Year's Eve positive vibes. Think of this as going to a party without all the B. S. of going to a party *said in a NY accent*.

Mankind's future is among the stars, but not necessarily on other planets. Instead we might forge giant space stations that are entire artificial worlds, and today we'll explore some of those megastructure designs, like the McKendree Cylinder, Bishop Rings, Banks Orbital, Topopolis, and more. The idea of spaceships or other machines that were essentially alive and able to repair and operate themselves has long been a popular one in science fiction. We'll take a look today at how that might be possible in the future, what advantages it would have for interplanetary or interstellar colonization, and how it might lead to entire artificial ecosystems dwelling in the void of space. The possibility of extraterrestrial life on other worlds has long fascinated us, as has the idea of alien life living in space itself, but while the former is often considered quite probable, the idea of anything evolving on airless moons, comets, and asteroids seems less likely. But with scientists uncovering life in ever more extreme and inhospitable environments on Earth, perhaps it is more likely than we think. 35 years ago, Science Fiction's Grandmaster, the late Isaac Asimov, made some predictions for 2019. Revolutionary improvements to automation and production may one day create machines able to produce almost anything, quickly and cheaply, and far faster and more varied than modern 3D Printers. Such devices are sometimes known as Santa Claus Machines, Cornucopia Devices, or Clanking Del-Replicators, and today we will examine how likely such technology is, how far off in the future they might be, and what impact they would have on society. Could we grow our foods in the heavens rather than on the earth? In order to do serious exploration and colonization of space, we will need a source of food beyond Earth. But can we go beyond simply small hydroponic gardens to entire vast space farms in orbit of our planet, and could those farming on satellites and space stations eventually replace earth-based agriculture as our main food source at home? Ever since we started finding fossils of long extinct species we've dreamed of getting to meet them, either by finding some secluded group of survivors, using a time machine, or resurrecting them. As our knowledge of genetics grows, this last option is fast approaching as a possible reality and raises many additional concerns about the technical and ethical challenges, not least of which is where to put them, with their former environments now used by people or other critters. We will examine these challenges today. Going back to '04, the great people at HBO thought that I could be a nice addition to their post-Emmy Award telecast celebration. Although I had no idea how my style and set would go down in an atmosphere that I've never been a part of, I did what came naturally and mixed good music that anyone would enjoy. I'd been cautioned not to worry if I couldn't get the well heeled entertainers and executives to hoof it on the dance floor because, for the most part, there's a lot of congratulatory conversation happening. They did get on the floor and before the party ended actors, actresses, CEOs, movie deal makers, models were applauding and whistling for more despite the presence of the L.A. Fire Department who were there at the end to make sure that things wound down when they were scheduled to. Since that 1st time out in 2004, the parties have become thematic. I enjoy the opportunity to come up with what can be considered as the 1st half of the party where the music reflects the inspired design. Since '04, the Bollywood vibes of India, 60's St. Tropez, and traditional Thailand have been themes, this year South America, highlighting Brazil and Argentina was the flavor. That's where having an open mind and an eclectic anything's possible ear comes in handy. Less than 10 days before this party, I was sent about 15 CDs that were purchased by the party's designer during his tours of South America, and asked to build my opening set based on the music of the likes of Maria Bethania & Jorge Ben. With 200 songs to absorb and my own records to consider, I began the process of cramming - you know like studying for that exam that you must pass - filling my head with suitable songs, working out when they should be played and what they could be mixed with. The dynamic that I must consider is that the party begins primarily with arrivals and a lot of mingling ensues...then it begins to reach capacity thus there's a need to shift the energy upwards into a groove that is infectious inviting but not yet overpowers...then there's the bit where they've heard the theme for more than an hour, and the task is keeping folks grooving and interested until my counterpart Ravi, the man with 2 dozen drums, steps onto the stage with me to set it off into dance floor madness. So here you are. Another close your eyes and imagine you were there set for you. A set that I've never done really but I hope that it's competent and that you enjoy it. One last detail I thought you might like and this detail somewhat explains the photo - I made up this whole set on the fly...meaning, I only knew what my 1st song was going to be which is "So Many Stars" by Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, they rest was improvised based on the best selections out of the pool of 15 discs that I'd been sent and the best of the vinyls that I took to round out my musical possibilities. No paint by numbers, no track one then track two as it's laid out in my computer playlist...just plain & pure intuition and mixing skills my friend, on the spot with the lights bright and hot. In that photo - I was calming myself to the view of downtown L.A. (Hollywood's hills are to the left) because my mind was going wild with possibilities, scenarios, and blends. It's a big party and I needed to put by best foot forward but I get butterflies and mini-panic attacks because I felt like I left a crucial record at home or I have some vision of a record skipping. Breathe & let it breathe while taking in the breathtaking - and all will be just fine. Enjoy and share, please.
