Dr. Matthew Bowman has just released a new biography on Joseph Fielding Smith. Bowman is the Howard W. Hunter Chair of Mormon Studies at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California. The Mormon Studies chair Bowman holds at Claremont Graduate University is the oldest in the country, having been established over 15 years ago. Bowman is the third person to hold the chair, following Richard Bushman and Patrick Mason. Patrick Mason left Claremont to take the chair at Utah State University. https://youtu.be/6VrK15TQVcY Don't miss our other episodes with Dr Matthew Bowman! https://gospeltangents.com/people/matthew-bowman/ Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Except for book reviews, no content may be reproduced without written permission. Mormon Studies Other Mormon studies chairs exist at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley (held by Deidre J Green), and the University of Virginia. Although not directly affiliated with Claremont, the late Jan Shipps is credited with making the study of the Mormon tradition a legitimate academic pursuit for those outside the tradition, enabling universities like Claremont without historical ties to Mormonism to establish such a chair. Before the endowed chair, Anne Taves, a professor interested in Mormonism, taught American religious history at CGU, and Armand Mauss was involved in fundraising and occasionally taught classes. Introductions to Mormon Thought Bowman is also involved in the "Introductions to Mormon Thought" book series, which he co-edits with Joseph Spencer. Published by the University of Illinois, the series aims to stimulate the growth of Mormon intellectual history through accessible introductory volumes on important Mormon thinkers. The series broadly defines "Mormon thinkers" to include artists like CCA Christensen and Minerva Teichert, alongside more traditional intellectuals. The books are intended to be short, accessible, and explore how these individuals influenced how members of the Mormon tradition understood themselves. The series uses the term "Mormon" intentionally broadly to encompass all denominations and movements originating from Joseph Smith's work, including fundamentalist Mormons and figures from the Community of Christ. While initially planned for 10-15 books, the series is doing well and is expected to continue. Other volumes in the series cover figures such as Eugene England (by Christine Hagund), Vardis Fisher (by Mike Austin), Sonia Johnson (by Chris Talbot), Lowell Bennion (by George Handley), Hugh Nibley (by Joseph Spencer), and Richard Bushman (by JB Haws). A future volume is planned on Eliza R. Snow (by Deidre Green), and Bowman hopes for one on Sheri Dew. Joseph Fielding Smith Bowman chose to write his book in the series about Joseph Fielding Smith, though his initial interest was in Bruce R. McConkie. He agreed to write about Smith instead to secure another author's participation in the series. Bowman views Joseph Fielding Smith as Bruce R. McConkie's intellectual parent and considers him the most significant LDS theologian of the 20th century, leaving a deeper and more persistent mark than others like James E. Talmage. While McConkie was influential, Bowman sees him more as a systematizer of his father-in-law's ideas rather than being an original. Other significant 20th/21st-century Mormon thinkers mentioned include B.H. Roberts, Margarita Bautista, Sheri Dew, and Leverne Parmley.. A significant fact about Joseph Fielding Smith is that he was the grandson of Hyrum Smith and the son of Joseph F. Smith. Bowman emphasizes that being a "Smith" was incredibly important to Fielding Smith, shaping his sense of duty and responsibility to continue his family's work. His memories of his father and uncle's violent deaths and his father's need to hide from federal marshals profoundly influenced him, fostering a sense of defensiveness and a perception that the world was hostile and persecuted the family f...

Hey everyone, it's Chris Horder here, but you might know me as Chuck LaFlange from the Ashes to Awesome podcast. We dive deep into the realities of addiction and trauma, something I know all too well. I'm celebrating a huge personal victory – a year of sobriety as of October 21, 2023! I've got some exciting news to share: I've been given an incredible opportunity for healing therapy at the Yatra Center in beautiful Phuket, Thailand. This isn't just a chance for personal growth; it's also a strategic move to keep the podcast thriving in a more cost-effective location. My family has been amazing, covering my travel expenses, but I'm still facing a financial shortfall. The podcast does bring in some sponsorship funds, but it's not quite enough to cover everything. The Yatra Center is kindly covering my first month's stay in Thailand, but beyond that, my financial future is a bit up in the air. This is where I need your help. I'm reaching out to our incredible community for support. Any contribution you can make will go a long way. As a token of my gratitude, I'll give a special shoutout to you on my podcast. If addiction has touched your life, we can also share a story in honor of your loved one. Whether it's a modest $5, a generous $25, or if you're able to contribute $100, your donation can make a significant difference in my journey. Join me in this chapter of healing and transformation. Your support is invaluable. Thank you for being a part of this journey and for being a part of my story. On the latest episode I'm joined by Glenys Livingstone, a pioneering researcher and thought leader who's been walking the Goddess path since 1979. Glenys is the author of "PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion, which fuses the indigenous traditions of Old Europe with scientific theory, feminism, and a poetic relationship with place." This book was an outcome of her doctoral work in Social Ecology. Her newest book is "A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony," which synthesizes much of her work over the years. On today's episode we discuss:* Glenys' spiritual background, including her conversion to Catholicism in her teens, as well as her growing disillusionment with Christianity* The "a-ha" moment that occurred when she realized, pregnant and unmarried, that knowing a female deity would allow her to view her situation without shame* What "PaGaian cosmology" means, including how it combines pagan spirituality with scientific theory to give us a new way to recognize and honor Her (the Goddess) as creative life force* Why it's important that we recognize the inherent power in language and the naming of things and life experiences * How honoring the equinoxes, solstice and cross-quarter days found on the pagan Wheel of the Year can bring us closer to the Sacred Feminine and provides an opportunity to consciously participate in the creative dance of the cosmosShow Notes If you'd like to know whose ancestral tribal lands you currently reside on, you can look up your address here: https://native-land.ca/My book, “Home to Her: Walking the Transformative Path of the Sacred Feminine,” is now available Womancraft Publishing!
To Sonia Johnson, the effort to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s and ‘80s was more than merely a single political cause. It was a turning point in her life. Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Virginia excommunicated Johnson from the Utah-based faith in 1979 for allegedly spreading false doctrine and working against them but she always maintained it was for exposing details of the church's national campaign against the proposed constitutional amendment. The discipline prompted her to evaluate all aspects of Mormonism. It also ended her marriage. At the same time, it propelled her onto the national stage, where the iconic feminist ran for the White House and used her newfound fame on behalf of women's equality. Some 35 years later, Kate Kelly, a Washington, D.C., activist also was excommunicated — at the same Virginia meetinghouse as Johnson — for her advocacy in pushing to ordain women to the faith's all-male priesthood. She, too, is fighting for ratification of the ERA and has written a new book, “Ordinary Equality,” about the continuing quest to enshrine women's rights in the Constitution. On this week's show, Johnson and Kelly discuss their ousters from their former faith, their current feelings toward the church, their advocacy for the ERA and its prospects, along with other women who have battled for the cause of equality.

Following the world news, hear an interview Sekhmet did with Max Dashu, founder of Suppressed Histories Archives. Dashu speaks about the witches of old and puts into context the current state of witch resistance and culture today. Then stay tuned for Thistle's interview with Ruth Barrett at the Mycelium Mysteries Women's Retreat in Almond WI this past month. Ruth talks about who the witches are and what their practice is in today's world. To finish off October's podcast, hear Thistle deliver her commentary about her life as a witch both as a child and adult. The music in the background swirls with Thistle's voice singing a Sonia Johnson chant at the end. You won't want to miss this special commentary for the Season. Professor Sonia Johnson from UCL tells us what kinds of research are most likely to improve outcomes and lives of people with serious mental health problems.
Dr. Nancy Ross and Sara Hanks, co-authors of "Where We Must Stand" discuss their experiences blogging at Feminist Mormon Housewives, and putting together a book on the first 10 years of the blog. They discusses some of the feminist successes & setbacks between 2012-2014. What were some of the successes in pushing for change within the LDS Church? https://youtu.be/c_uF51IVmZg Nancy:But at that time the community was all about activism, or so much of the community conversation turned to activism. Really. In the middle of 2012, and this is covered in the book, there's a little activist action to try and better understand different temples' policies with regard to women and young women doing baptisms for the dead while menstruating. And so, there are a bunch of phone calls made and they try to get information about what different temples policies are with the idea that, you might show up at a temple and they might have a different policy and that might make people feel excluded or embarrassed. Sara: Embarrassed. Yeah. Nancy: And so that happens in the middle of 2012. By the end of 2012, we've got the first "Wear pants to church day," and then that's followed by, "Let Women Pray," and the advent of "Let Women Pray was it's own activist event to try and ask church leaders to let a woman pray in general conference which happened with Jean Stephens, which is super exciting. Sara: Yeah. Nancy:And then we've got the arrival of Ordain Women in the Spring of 2013. And so leading up to Kate Kelly's excommunication, like from the middle of 2012 to the middle of 2014, there was just so much momentum in the community for like, Hey, we can change things. With the temple baptisms issue after all of this information gathering, someone was able to kind of make a connection further up the chain in the church and then the church issued a clarification to say no, we need all the temples to allow women young women to participate in baptisms regardless of whether or not they're menstruating. And that was, that felt huge. Concerning Kate Kelly's excommunicationin 2014, Sara: One part of the feeling was just so much shock, because not only had we felt really hopeful for the possibilities of change, but we also kind of were under the impression as a community at large that with the advent of the Internet and so much attention being paid to the church and so much possibility for exposing problems or injustices that the church wouldn't take the sort of actions that they had taken when it came to Sonia Johnson in the 70's or the September Six in the early 90's or the, the professors at BYU who were censured. We thought, "They wouldn't because it would be too much of a risk. There would be too much backlash." Nancy: And it was also right in the middle of that Mormon moment. And the church had done the "I'm a Mormon" campaign. They had spent so much time, effort, energy and resources trying to make the church look good in the eyes of the public. LESBIANISM as Resistance As we here in the US drag ourselves across the one year marker of a particular misogynistic white male supremacist presidential rule, it seems prudent on this week’s Women’s Liberation Music Hour with Phoenixx to focus again on Resistance! Last time, our music of Resistance carried the flavor of Anger; this time, the music flavor will celebrate Lesbianism. Separating ourselves from men, focusing on one another as Sisters/Lovers/Friends/Tribemates/etc and as Sonia Johnson once wrote, “taking our eyes off the guys,” are vital strategies of resisting male supremacy and heteronormativity. Lesbian Culture is rich with music around this Gynocentric theme, so I’m thrilled to gather and arrange some of my favorites for you this week. Hope you find yourselves singing along, laughing, crying with recognition and feeling the pride of being born a Female-loving Lesbian! In this episode, Molly and Ris talk about the institutional sexism that got Sonia Johnson excommunicated for fighting for women's rights in the late '70s and the deification and hero worship of Joseph Smith in the Church. Ris reads "and it came to pass" 39 times in two chapters of the Book of Mormon, and Molly announces the upcoming project to read "The Miracle of Forgiveness" by Spencer W. Kimball.
