Spruce Grove poet Lynn Gale reads from her new poetry collection l’opacité, followed by a Q&A led by WGA Board Vice President and Write Well Press founder Leanne Myggland-Carter. Lynn Gale lives in Spruce Grove, Alberta with her husband of 30+ years and spends her days working as the payroll supervisor for the City of Spruce Grove. In July 2017 she started her own business, Windsong Writing and Wellness, offering freelance writing, writing workshops, and wellness classes that blend yoga with writing. Her evenings are filled with writing and teaching yoga. She is working on a juvenile fiction novel, a picture book, and a romance (three separate works, not all in one!). Her publication credits include pieces in Other Voices (2011), Chicken Soup for the Soul: It’s Christmas! Rick Lauber is a professional freelance writer with a sizable portfolio. He began his writing career after pursuing radio broadcasting, bartending, and marketing/public relations. Outside of writing, he continues to work part-time, travel to the mountains as often as possible, and cheer on the Edmonton Eskimos.Rick is also a former co-caregiver for both of his aging parents (his mother had Parkinson’s Disease and Leukemia and his father had Alzheimer’s disease) turned book author. With help from his two sisters, Rick assumed many new-found caregiving responsibilities. Rick learned that caregiving can impact a person physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially and managed his own health and well-being by writing. Rick’s initially published stories became the platforms for two published caregiving guidebooks – Caregiver’s Guide for Canadians and The Successful Caregiver’s Guide. Rick continues to reach out to prospective new, and current caregivers through different means including presenting webinars and active writing about caregiving and caregiving-related issues for printed and on-line publications. Rick has written two non-fiction books, both published by Self-Counsel Press (North Vancouver). Caregiver’s Guide for Canadians was initially published in September 2010, and has subsequently been updated to a second edition. The second book, The Successful Caregiver’s Guide, published in September 2015, focuses on the American market. Both books are valuable resources for prospective, new, and current caregivers (those helping and supporting aging seniors or preparing to do so). Episode 50: Thriving During Stressful TimesWhat does crunch time look like for you? Managing an event, online launch or the high season in your business can wreak havoc on your stress levels. Maybe a stressful situation has popped up when you least expected it to, and you now find yourself with a thousand things on your mind and a to-do list that's a mile long. In this episode, I talk about the strategies I use when I'm in “crunch time.” Physical BodyIf we don't take care of ourselves, then we could get sick or injured, which will only compound our stress. Instead, it's crucial to think about what you need to thrive during an intense period. I talk about taking care of myself physically, which, for me, means staying hydrated, eating clean, getting lots of exercise and proper rest. I do my best not to overdo anything, and I create a routine which my body loves. MindDuring times of high stress, we often let negative and doubtful thoughts in. These are often unreasonable, but it's a natural response to set ourselves up, so we don't get hurt. To combat this, I spend a few moments every morning doing a thought download; this gets it all out of my brain. Be sure to spend time focusing on what inspires you and set aside any negativity in your life. SoulIt's essential to feel good inside ourselves when the stakes are high, or during a stressful time. I find it helpful to make a list of everything that makes me feel good, such as spending time with friends and loved ones, outdoor walks, movie nights, or taking a bath. Everyone is different, so pick what works for you and write it down. Once you have a list, you can choose something from there when you feel overwhelmed It's been my experience that entrepreneurs (especially females) tend to pile on the tasks when things get busy instead of taking a step back to assess whether it's essential or a priority. Many of us feel like we have to do everything, instead of delegating tasks that someone else could do on our behalf. When we find ourselves in this situation, it's important to ask for and accept help wherever we can find it. It's also imperative to keep everything in perspective. Do the fine details matter? Remember that nothing is perfect, and we are all learning as we grow in our entrepreneurial journeys. To operate as your highest self, and don't focus on everything being perfect.
