In this episode, we welcome David Wolpert, a Professor at the Santa Fe Institute renowned for his groundbreaking work across multiple disciplines—from physics and computer science to game theory and complexity. * Note: If you enjoy our podcast conversations, please join us for the Artificiality Summit on October 23-25 in Bend, Oregon for many more in person conversations like these! Learn more about the Summit at www.artificiality.world/summit.We reached out to David to explore the mathematics of meaning—a concept that's becoming crucial as we live more deeply with artificial intelligences. If machines can hold their own mathematical understanding of meaning, how does that reshape our interactions, our shared reality, and even what it means to be human?David takes us on a journey through his paper "Semantic Information, Autonomous Agency and Non-Equilibrium Statistical Physics," co-authored with Artemy Kolchinsky. While mathematically rigorous in its foundation, our conversation explores these complex ideas in accessible terms. At the core of our discussion is a novel framework for understanding meaning itself—not just as a philosophical concept, but as something that can be mathematically formalized. David explains how we can move beyond Claude Shannon's syntactic information theory (which focuses on the transmission of bits) to a deeper understanding of semantic information (what those bits actually mean to an agent).Drawing from Judea Pearl's work on causality, Schrödinger's insights on life, and stochastic thermodynamics, David presents a unified framework where meaning emerges naturally from an agent's drive to persist into the future. This approach provides a mathematical basis for understanding what makes certain information meaningful to living systems—from humans to single cells. Our conversation ventures into:How AI might help us understand meaning in ways we cannot perceive ourselvesWhat a mathematically rigorous definition of meaning could mean for AI alignmentHow contexts shape our understanding of what's meaningfulThe distinction between causal information and mere correlationWe finish by talking about David's current work on a potentially concerning horizon: how distributed AI systems interacting through smart contracts could create scenarios beyond our mathematical ability to predict—a "distributed singularity" that might emerge in as little as five years. We wrote about this work here. For anyone interested in artificial intelligence, complexity science, or the fundamental nature of meaning itself, this conversation offers rich insights from one of today's most innovative interdisciplinary thinkers. About David Wolpert:David Wolpert is a Professor at the Santa Fe Institute and one of the modern era's true polymaths. He received his PhD in physics from UC Santa Barbara but has made seminal contributions across numerous fields. His research spans machine learning (where he formulated the "No Free Lunch" theorems), statistical physics, game theory, distributed intelligence, and the foundations of inference and computation. Before joining SFI, Wolpert held positions at NASA, Stanford, and the Santa Fe Institute as a professor. His work consistently bridges disciplinary boundaries to address fundamental questions about complex systems, computation, and the nature of intelligence. Thanks again to Jonathan Coulton for our music.

If you've been listening to the show for some time, you probably already know my stance on live launches. I am not generally a fan of only live launching your offer. As I teach my Accelerator members, you can do live launches, but you should also be offering your program on an evergreen basis. Offering only live launches is stressful. There are so many moving parts and it can easily get overwhelming. If you're tired of being on this live launch roller coaster, you're in the right place. In this episode of Art of Online Business, I sat down with TaVona Denise to talk about how you can go from having stressful, unfocussed launches to having fun and profitable launches. TaVona Denise helps coaches and online service providers redesign their businesses so they can have the lifestyle and impact they started the business for. A former physical therapist, master-certified life coach, and trauma-informed business consultant, TaVona uses her diverse background to help entrepreneurs launch and grow their businesses with integrity and ease so they can bring in their favorite clients without suffering from burnout or hating the process. TaVona is the author of Unstoppable Success: How to Finally Create the Body, Business and Lifestyle You Want and the voice behind the podcasts, Breaking Protocol, and Coaching & Conversations. When she is not handling business, you can find her singing karaoke or enjoying the white sands and beautiful blue waters of Mexico which she currently calls home.In this episode, you'll learn:Why you should look at launches like a partyCreating a launch that matches your energyWhy there's more than one way to launchThe importance of experimenting and evaluating The internal work you need to do with a launchWhy we subconsciously sabotage ourselvesWhat's working right now in terms of launchingLinks & Resources:The Art of Online Business websiteDM me on InstagramVisit my YouTube channelThe Art of Online Business clips on YouTubeFull episodes of The Art of Online Business Podcast on YouTubeThe Art of Online Business Podcast websiteCheck out my Accelerator coaching program*Disclosure: I only recommend products I use and love and all opinions expressed here are my own. Robert Stephenson no longer carries trinkets in his pockets. His need to wear crystals that represent his spirituality has lessened. This, he says, is because he has come to embody the meaning of those items in his very being. This shift has characterised an important period in Robert's life, in which he has departed from his role as director of Animas Centre for Coaching and launched his own coaching business, Fan the Flames Ltd.Robert talks about openly and honestly about why he left Animas and the impact this change has had on him, and he describes how he has truly stepped into his power since his first appearance on The Coach's Journey Podcast in July 2021. Back then, Animas provided a framework – or scaffolding – for Robert's work. So what happened when that scaffolding was no longer present? Our conversation explores Robert's transformation in depth, offering valuable lessons about how to manage change and how to grasp opportunities that arise when our circumstances change.Robert explains how he made decisions led by intuition, discovered through play, or inspired by dreams, as he took ownership of his future while embracing his "nowness". In this episode, we talk about:Recognising change in ourselvesWhat are the stabilisers we use in our lives? And can we take them off?Embracing endings and managing changeListening to our bodies and accessing our deeper knowledgeHow to move "from loss to legacy"Robert also talks about the courage it takes to remove the masks we wear in our lives and careers, and the new ways people relate to us when we show up as ourselves. To learn more about Robert, visit https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-stephenson-2491a21/ or listen to his first appearance on the podcast https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-27-robert-stephenson-animas-how-to-say-yes-and-become-a-conduit-for-change For information about my wider work, my writing or to buy my books, visit www.robbieswale.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/community. Here's the deal. You're already suffering in your heartbreak, and you may be telling yourself some sneaky little lies to make yourself feel better. But when you tell yourselves these lies, you end up perpetuating the suffering. And not only that, but you're keeping yourself from becoming the healed version of you that will be able to call in Mr. or Ms. Right. Some of these lies have come up for clients in my group coaching program, and they are things that I have definitely heard other women say. So in this episode, I share with you the five lies you tell yourself in heartbreak, and we dive into how they are holding you back, and the coaching I gave my clients that allowed them to free themselves from heartbreak. If you are looking to really get deeper on your situation, healing your heart, and cleaning up your stories, then I invite you to join my program, Stop Wanting Him Back and Find Someone Better. In my program, we work together and I help women create the results of healing their hearts, falling in love with themselves, and finding someone better. Faith deconstruction is not necessarily a bad thing. If your past experience has not been a biblical Christian experience but was just a distortion of true Christianity, then deconstruction and reconstruction is exactly what needs to happen. For the reconstruction process, it's important to remember the principle that “To recover your faith, you need to recover the faith.” To do this, a clear understanding of three key areas is necessary:Who God isWho we areWhat sin isIn this podcast episode, Scott and Shawn discussA young man's real-life story about his experience with Christianity and the challenge of a distorted view of biblical faith in these three key areasHow to begin deconstructing caricatures of Christianity and reconstruct a biblical view of God and ourselvesWhat the essence of sin is and how it impacts our experience as humansHow we can talk about sin to others in a way that helps and doesn't hinderFor related resources, visit https://preparedtoanswer.org/topics/culture-and-spirituality/is-talking-about-sin-harmfulSupport the show (https://preparedtoanswer.org/donate/)

Devoted to prayerPreach on a subject I have preached many timesPrayer is an immense privilege for us, whether we are praying from within or we verballyNo one can stop us talking with our heavenly father except ourselvesWhat's your prayer life like? How many prayer meetings do you have? Do you know how many church prayer meetings we have? How much time do you spend praying when you pray? What do you pray for?Paul's instruction on Colossians is clear and direct.Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan concerning Christ. That is why I am here in chains. Pray that will proclaim this message as clearly as I should.Colossians 4:2-4We find on Acts 2 the early church prayed. They knew how to devote themselves to prayer and they also knew the results of devoted prayer.Acts of the Apostles 2:42-43Devoted- Give all or most of ones time or resources to (a person or activity) “I wanted to devote more time to my family"When I was younger I heard the phrase a lotPrayer changes thingsI have to say I don't fully agree as it depends on who you pray toI heard a story recently from a lady who days she prays to her dead mother. Don't think she's going to answerThe God we pray to changes things and more so when we pray from a place of faith.Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.James 5:16Interesting here that James mentionsConfessionAccountability HealingEarnest or devoted prayer and how it affects the results of prayer.Personally I think our prayer meetings are the best meetings of the week.Paul is writing to the Colossian church and the Church in Laodicea from Prison, prison in those days maybe a hole in the ground not pleasant place to be but he is not concerned with his own condition and circumstance. He does not ask from a selfish placePaul's concern is the proclamation of the Gospel, the very reason he's in prison. It's not wrong to ask for personal prayer, for healing for help in time of need. But in this passage Paul's focus is the advance of Gods Kingdom through proclamation of the Gospel. He's not asking for an individual (S) to be saved. He knows that once the gospel is proclaimed people will hear and believe. But they can't if they have never heard the Gospel. Its good to pray that for ourselves individually and as a church which we do at the prayer meetings each weekApplicationJust in these few verses there are lots of challenge for usHow can you apply this to your life? What are the hindrances to prayer - Time, being able to focus, more important things?Do you have a concern for friends and family, colleagues, neighbours who don't know Jesus and have never heard the Gospel? How often do you pray for them?Do you confess your sin to another?Do you pray for one another that you might be healed? Are you aware of how powerful your prayers are when they come from the right heart motive?ConclusionThe church in the west has become more about consumerism rather than participation. We as elders cannot do this for youWe can model, it but there is personal responsibility on each of usOur prayer life is ours to develop and nurture.God loves it when we come to him he gave us prayer as a way to communicate with him and when we do anything is possibleWhat have you prayed for recently (doesn't matter how big or small a thing) and seen God Answer? Give thanks for that and be motivated to pray more.

Your inner bitch. We've all got one. You know, that voice tells you you aren't good enough, that makes you doubt yourself, and is so judgemental about your every move. Friends, friends, friends....we made it!!!I can't believe it's the end of the damn year! But it's here. I swear, it feels like yesterday we were ringing in 2020 and positioning ourselves to start this new decade with a BANG.But hey, life had other plans for us, and HERE WE ARE. I typically like to use the last days of the year to look at how my year was and what I plan to prioritize in the upcoming year. Friends, there was a lot this year. To be candid -- once COVID and quarantine hit, I got hit with a bad case of depression, and the death of my friend/mentor rocked me more on top of that. This year, it was about humility. And giving myself the grace to be depressed and not giving myself guilt over it. And man, it was hard, but I got there. In this episode, I want to talk about some of the nuggets that I landed on to usher me into 2021. Lacey and Nik from the Sober Company podcast also joined me to chop it up about 2020 too. I like to consider it a conversational inventory, which I encourage you to either do on your own OR gather some friends and dive deep into what this year really meant to you. We discussed:The clusterfu*k of 2020 overallWhat we learned about our recoveryWhat we learned about ourselvesWhat we accepted about ourselves Diversity + Inclusion in the sober communityOur plans for our podcasts!I hope you enjoy this episode. It's more conversational in most, but I wanted it to be a lil' loose as we head into the unknown of 2021. ----------Stay safe out there, friends! You will love to laugh with her and sometimes maybe even AT her, but I know you will grow to love and respect her. If you are feeling stuck or unsure, I made this episode just for you. Here’s a thought experiment that can help you find clarity and start taking steps in the right direction. We all get stuck at times, but we are not meant to stay there indefinitely. Use this simple experiment to remind yourself of what is most important. Quotes to remember: “One of the things that is inherent to creativity and expression is it’s unknown to you.” “There are things we want to do that are totally outside what we currently know.”Takeaways:When we feel stuck we are often faced with the path we are currently on and a more unknown pathThe essence of creativity is a mysteryOur mind/ego wants to protect you and keep you safe, but this often becomes limitingThe thing you will regret most is not tryingThe steps become clear when we have a destination in mindWhen we are making a switch or transition, the first decision is a commitmentNothing outside of you will give you the satisfaction and contentment of being fully yourselfIt’s okay to feel stuck; we’re just not meant to stay thereIs anything safe, really? When we can accept the mystery, we can become the fullest expression of ourselvesWhat you’ll learn:A useful thought experiment to help you when you feel stuckHow a visualization of your future self can clarify things for you nowHow to differentiate between something you like to do and something you love to doWhy projecting oneself into the future is such a powerful techniqueWhat the physical body is trying to tell you through pain and illnessAbout our deepest instinct to be the fullest expression of who we areMentioned on the podcast: The Slight Edge - Jeff OlsonFuture self-continuity: how conceptions of the future self transform intertemporal choice - Hal E. John shares his wonderful lockdown story of how his first book came to fruition plus his journey to writing and much more in our podcast this week. Here is some more information about John . . . Author of a recently published book 'You, me and Destiny'However, we once had business in Sligo but we were involved in a couple of ventures in SligoMy wife and I owned and operated Crazy Janes restaurant in Rockwood Parade, where Grappa now operates. For a couple of years, we also rented The Riverbank restaurant on the Parade also. My wife was closely involved but my involvement was limited to keeping the books. After the restaurants, my wife Mary returned to teaching Home Economics. She teaches in Mercy College SligoJohn is a former teacher at Summerhill College who retired in 2018. I taught English there and was a Year Head. I was involved in also involved in the production of the college newsletters and magazines. I edited the commemorative magazine marking the move to the new building in 2013. I was always writing sporadically for my own pleasure. During the early days of the Pandemic, my three daughters who had been abroad returned home and encouraged me to release one of my novels. After a bit of persuasion, I released 'You, me and Destiny' on Amazon and it is also available in Liber and Eason in Sligo. Are you a Sligo Native? If no what is the story of how you moved here?: From Dromahair just across the county border. When we married my wife and a partner were renting The Rooftop Restaurant in Wine St car park and I was teaching in Summerhill. Sligo was the obvious place to base ourselvesWhat do you love about living in Sligo?: What's not to like? I like the lifestyle that living in Sligo affords us. Being near the sea and the beaches is a huge plus. We are walkers so there is no shortage of lovely walks in the area. Sligo has such a rich culture and as regards retail, there is very little one cannot buy in Sligo. Our daughters and we have brought many friends home from abroad and they have always been highly impressed by the area.If you could wave a magic wand what would you fix or bring to Sligo ie. facilities, shops, restaurants, culture/arts?: I would bring a sustained period of prosperity. That is what Sligo really needs. The roads will be there, the new streetscapes will and many more developments in the planning. It just needs an uninterrupted period of economic growth in the region.Faster train service would help especially if the airport is not set to return. What are you looking forward to in the future in your personal and professional life?: We have always travelled abroad and I would dearly love the situation to improve. My daughters are into language big time and last year all three lived in France. One is currently on lock down in Paris and as was the case last year, we would be there for Halloween if we could travel.Last year we had two girls in Paris and one on Erasmus in Nice-one of my favourite destinations which has hit the news for tragic reasons. If given health we will be fine. As regards writing I intend to publish again in 2021 but I have not decided to go with one of those already written or maybe a different one. What are your must do Sligo recommendations? Restaurants/Walks etc.: Before the lockdown in March our usual walk was from the Airport in Strandhill, to Killaspugbrone and onto Dorren's Strand. Since then we have walked the circuit around our home- Woodville, Mitchell-Curley park, Strandhill Road and Barnasraghy. I occasionally use some of the marvellous Cleveragh tracks. We have been doing Saturday morning coffee in town since our girls were kids. Grappa is and was the favourite. We frequent all the nighttime restaurants and are delighted at the new ones appearing.Currently, I can be found on Instagram at j.fmcloughlin

Making it Happen is Joy Ogeh-Hutfield - a world class Transformation Coach and one of UK’s most inspirational authors and International Speaker. Trained by the renowned International Coach Anthony Robbins and accredited coach by the International Coaching Federation, Joy Ogeh-Hutfield, is founder of Joy Transformation and majors on mind-set transformation.Joy, let's start with what has led you to now?I was born in Nigeria, an only child. My parents wanted more children but unfortunately, my mum couldn’t have more. Also, I was a girl. In the African tradition, having a boy secured your legacy. I believed my dad really would have loved to have a boy. I went to boarding school from the age of 11 to 16years. It was a major sacrifice as at that time my parents were not rich. However, it was the best form of education /environment which positioned me for a better future. At 16, an opportunity was presented to me when my auntie who had been living in the UK for the past 25years came to visit us. My dream at that time was to become an actress. She suggested that London would be the right place to begin my dream. So, 4 days later, my mum and I came to the UK. This gave rise to my discovering who I was and who I wanted to become. One thing that emerged was my love for people. I was fascinated by the differences and similarities we all shared. I went on to study Theatre and psychology at the university of Liverpool and later a post graduate certificate in education at university of Greenwich and specialised in teaching adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. I soon realised my passion for Mind Set transformation. I was surrounded by people who had very little self -belief and were constantly told that they were not good enough or would not amount to much because they had a disability or were classed as having a behavioural challenge. Somehow, I took on the challenge. Perhaps, a personal battle with society. My motto: Dare to do the impossible. So, I pushed the boundaries and encouraged others to do the same. This vision and attitude has led me to become a transformation coach. What is the main thing you believe stops us being ‘women of purpose’?There are three main things that stops us being women of purpose.Lack of self- awareness – not taking the time to define who we really are.Self-Doubt – not feeling good enoughSelf-Love – looking for love everywhere else but ourselvesWhat’s your preferred method of connecting with you?Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/joytransfo/Website: www.joytransformationcoach.comTwitter: @joytransfoSupport the show (https://costawomen.com/help/contact)
