Celebrate women who rock in a discussion with the hosts of NPR music's series Turning the Tables as they share their new book How Women Made Music: A Revolutionary History from NPR Music. Uncovering the role women have played in shaping the music industry, editor Alison Fensterstock brings long-overdue recognition to female artists, challenging traditional best album lists and highlighting overlooked contributions in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. By bringing together material from over fifty years of NPR's coverage, Fensterstock underscores the enduring impact of women in music. Audience members will gain insight into Joan Baez's reflections on nonviolence as a musical principle, discover Dolly Parton's favorite song and the story behind it, and learn about Nina Simone's use of her voice as a tool against racism. The book also captures Odetta's transition from classical music to folk as a way to express her anger over Jim Crow laws and Taylor Swift's early uncertainties about her career. Music enthusiasts, songwriters, feminist historians, and anyone intrigued by the creative process are invited for a compelling evening of composition conversation at Town Hall. Alison Fensterstock is a New Orleans-based writer and editor. A contributor to NPR Music since 2016, she's written and edited for Turning the Tables and appeared on NPR programs including All Things Considered, World Café and Word of Mouth; her writing about popular music and culture has appeared in Rolling Stone, the NewYork Times, the Oxford American and MOJO, among others. Emily Fox hosts and produces KEXP's music interview show, Sound & Vision. Music and storytelling are her passions. Prior to working at KEXP, Emily was a host, producer, and reporter on Michigan Radio, WKAR and Seattle's KUOW. Rachel Flotard is the singer, songwriter and guitarist of the Seattle rock band Visqueen and mother of three. She manages artists at Red Light Management and previously served as Director of Operations at Fretboard Journal. Flotard is a creative producer and founded her own independent record label, Local 638 Records, inspired by her dad's New York City Steamfitter's Union. She continues to tour, record and collaborate with folks she loves. Buy the Book How Women Made Music: A Revolutionary History from NPR Music The Elliott Bay Book Company
I'm trying something new: a short-form twist on my soundwalk formula, folding in my photography. So here is a pilot episode of sorts. I hope you enjoy this little string of impressions in sound and vision.Go on and hit that play button above. Let's see what we can see, and hear what we can hear. It's a densely overcast morning. As soon as I hit the trail, I'm checking out a Townsend's Chipmunk. It's smaller than my hand, munching on a seed, I think. Do you hear the click-click-click-click? That's my camera. That's the sound it makes when I want to take pictures in low light without a tripod. It takes multiple shots and stitches them together. The chipmunk is still, and then poof it's gone. It rained all night long. The trees are saturated and dripping. Little streams and rivulets course down the upper reaches of Balch Creek Canyon. I love listing to their ephemeral burble. Across the canyon, the tops of Douglas-fir emerge from the mist. The hillside is breathing. I've been on a mushroom kick, so I'm scanning the stumps and nurse logs on the side of the trail. I see a slug munching on fungi. A petit dejeuner.I hear Golden-crowned kinglets up in the canopy, and a Pacific Wren chipping over the rise. I've come back down to the Wildwood Trail. It's an easy stroll here as it rounds the contour of the Tualatin mountains above the upper reaches of these NW Portland neighborhoods built out in the early 1900s. The din of highway 30 and the NW industrial park washes up these slopes. The train whistles are ghostly, bouncing off the fir colonnades. Look, rays of sunlight are breaking through. On one of these firs I spy Fairy Parachutes (Marasmiellus candidus) nestled in the saturated moss. I can't think of a more perfect, evocative name for these. The circumference of these are less than that of a dime. These are the only ones I find today. On a nearby stump I see a similarly very delicate duo. Like so many, I can't identify it. Do you know? Around the corner I spy a coral fungus (Clavulina coralloides). It's about two inches tall. Not big. I set my camera down in the duff to capture this angle, and it appears bigger. Click-click-click-click.I've been hearing Red-breasted Nuthatches up high in the canopy. Their calls sounds like little clown shoes on parade to me. Honk honk honk. The only bird that I attempt to photograph, other than some Dark-eyed Juncos is this Brown Creeper.Brown Creepers always climb up tree trunks, and they are very on task, so you'll often get good looks at them in the forest. What does it have in its beak?Brown Creepers have one of the sweetest songs. Trees, trees, beautiful trees they sing in a pitch so high that many a septuagenarian (age 70+) can no longer hear them. With that in mind, I try to savor their singing when it's quiet. On the north side of the rise, I now see the firs and ferns backlit by the rays of sun breaking through. They glisten with a million raindrops clinging to them, like so many berries. This purple capped mushroom on the side of the trail is coated with bits of soil from the barrage of the morning rain. It stretches out above the fir cones like a battle-worn survivor.Nearby I find this scene and try to puzzle out a scenario from the forensic evidence. I don't get far, but the words “string cheese incident" pop into my head, and I visualize a squirrel. One thing that quickly becomes clear about fungi photography is the extent to which it's difficult to communicate scale. These are miniscule, testing the limits of my camera.I identify them as belonging to the large Mycena genus, commonly known as bonnets. Wikipedia says:Mycenas are hard to identify to species and some are distinguishable only by microscopic features such as the shape of the cystidia. Some species are edible, while others contain toxins, but the edibility of most is not known, as they are likely too small to be useful in cooking.and..Over 58 species are known to be bioluminescent, creating a glow known as foxfire.I wonder if these guys glow?As I work my way back, I'm struck by how everything looks a little different with the sun being a few degrees higher on the horizon. Late-morning light. Time to head home. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit chadcrouch.substack.com/subscribe

This is part 3 of our new Sound Judgment quick-hit series on six storytelling strategies for hooking your audience and keeping them with you. Today, we're talking about scenes. They're obviously a staple in longform narrative storytelling, like true crime and documentaries. Don't ignore them, though, for interview shows; you just have to interview well to elicit good, sensory anecdotes from your guests. Between the lines, you'll hear how useful they are on the page and the stage as well. As a reminder, all six strategies come from today's best audio storytellers. But these are storytelling strategies that don't care what media is yours, so stick around, writers, public speakers, screenwriters and video producers — and of course, podcasters. With examples featuring Rich Roll, author Charles Duhigg, and Crime Show's Emma Courtland. Apply the six storytelling strategies for creating unforgettable content to your own work! Our fourth S in the 6S framework for hooking your audience and keeping them with you is surprise. It's the left turn when we're expecting a righthand one that makes us listen. It's the twists and turns of an involved, high-stakes plot that we love, or the ending of the movie or the novel that we didn't predict. As New Hampshire Public Radio Senior Podcast Editor Katie Colaneri says, it's the "holy shit" moment. Part 4 features Katie Colaneri, NHPR reporter Sarah Gibson and her This American Life Story, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Quorum," and Kelly Corrigan of the PBS show Tell Me More and the podcast Kelly Corrigan Wonders. Thomas Jackson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. After earning a B.A. in History from the College of Wooster, he spent his early career in New York City working first in book publishing, then as an editor and writer at Forbes Life magazine. An interest in photography books eventually led him to pick up a camera, shooting Garry Winogrand-inspired street scenes, then landscapes, and finally the installation work he does today. A self-taught artist, Jackson has created a unique process that merges landscape photography, sculpture and kinetic art. His work has been shown widely, including at The Photography Show (AIPAD) in New York, the Center for Contemporary Arts in Sante Fe and the Bolinas Museum in Bolinas, CA. Jackson was named one of the Critical Mass Top 50 in 2012, won the “installation/still-life” category of PDN's The Curator award in 2013 and earned second place in CENTER's Curator's Choice Award in 2014.
