Steven Hill, Managing Director at Case Management System provider Denovo BI joins Today's Conveyancer Podcast host David Opie to discuss technology, case management, and the challenge of working across Scottish and English jurisdictions.Steven talks about his history with the business  over 18 years and his recent promotion to the role of Managing Director. Denovo BI started out life as an accounts system catering for England & Wales, and Scottish legal systems. In their development since, and as they have introduced case and matter management into their portfolio, they have retained this cross-jurisdictional  compatibility. Steven explains the challenges from a technology and workflow point of view presented by the front-end conveyancing process in Scotland, where much more of the legal process is captured at the start of the transaction, and the "last-minute" process in England and Wales The conversation moves onto the changing legal landscape which for Steven has shifted dramatically since he joined the business. Case and matter management should be a single source of truth, he says, and is an advocate of helping clients better educate their staff on the features and benefits of the software so that adoption is encouraged. He discusses his thoughts on how we can get better adoption; showing staff how to get documents in and out of the systems, making it easy for users to make the most of the technology and ultimately ensure that clients are integrated into the process. He goes on to talk about the range of technology providing discrete services and the importance of interconnectivity and interoperability and the role case management plays in ensuring that they are able to integrate with best of breed third parties.  But comes back to the importance of internal education, otherwise the firm simply doesn't see the full benefit of their investment. An interesting insight into the direction of travel for case and matter management from an expert in the field. Jesse L. Martin finally has his own show, and it's about time. As you might guess, it's a procedural show -- that's what he cut his teeth on. From 1999 to 2008, he starred as Det. Ed Green on "Law & Order." Altogether, he was the fifth longest serving cast member behind S. Epatha Merkerson, Sam Waterston, Jerry Orbach, and Steven Hill. This time, Martin is the star and plays Dr. Alec Mercer. Here's what his new show, "The Irrational," focuses on in his words: "'The Irrational' follows a behavioral psychologist by the name of Alec Mercer, played by myself, Jesse L. Martin. It's just standard procedural with nothing standard about it. You basically follow this guy through his personal life and his professional life, and he has the bonus of being very tuned in on human behavior and the deficit of being very tuned in on human behavior. So you can imagine how much that would affect his personal life, certainly benefits his professional life, but personal life gets a little funny, and therein lies the drama." Alec's crime solving methods do add some fun psychological wrinkles to this procedural formula. The show premieres on NBC in primetime. Check it out. And again, congratulations to Jesse L. Martin. He has always represented us very well. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The law provides $39 billion to help fund semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. “The CHIPS Act is not specific to U.S. companies,” Hill said. “It's for the key players in the industry. Companies like TSMC and Samsung are included, not only Intel, global foundries, Micron, Wolfspeed will benefit.”The semiconductor ecosystem is a complex web of innovation and technology that plays a significant role in the world economy, and it's an exciting time for the U.S. to up its game. “It's amazing the amount of applications that semiconductor devices go in today,” Hill said. “When you think about EVs and autonomous driving, and you talk about the cloud, the cloud's enabled by semiconductor devices. So, high-performance computing, data centers, there are so many applications for semiconductor devices.”Because of all the applications requiring state-of-the-art semiconductors, a more developed workforce is needed to grow this business, predicted to grow to more than a trillion dollars over the next several years. “We have to attract talent to this industry,” Shelton said. “We have to take advantage of being in the spotlight and get those kids in universities focused on an engineering degree, and it's hard to do that, but we must encourage them. At the end of the day, this is an amazing industry to be part of.”

It's going to be an examination of the spy/heist genre. It will look at film, television, comics, cartoons and whatever else that can fall under that umbrella. First up, we go to the very top of the genre for me, the original Mission Impossible TV show, which ran on CBS from 1966 to 1975. Naturally, we start with the Pilot, which starred Steven Hill as Dan Briggs, the team leader, along with regulars Barbara Bain, Greg Morris, Peter Lupus, Martin Landau and guest star Wally Cox. We look at the background on the show and then some brief chat about the episode itself, where the team goes to a Caribbean country to stop a dictator from using newly-acquired nuclear warheads against the United States. We also look at arguably the most-remembered episode of the show, Season 3's The Execution. We have Peter Graves in his second year as Jim Phelps, the regular team and guest villains Vincent Gardenia, Val Avery and Lew Askew. The team needs to get the goods on a mobster trying to control food prices and must get a hitman to rat out his boss by making him believe he is days away from being killed in the gas chamber. This episode was a little shorter than we planned, but didnt want to just add filler. It was the demo episode, so please forgive any hiccups or glitches. We'll be back soon with another episode. Thanks to Karl for the invitation. Make sure you sample the other shows on the When It Was Cool Network.

“And so, the idea was how do you harness this capitalist engine to create a more broadly shared prosperity? And once they decided to do that, then they said, well, what do we do with this wealth if we're going to make it more broadly shared? Do we just have everyone make more income? And they said, no. It makes more sense; let's think about what are the things that people need in their lives.” Despite suffering severe shocks from the 2008 global economic and banking crisis, nations of the European Union have provided the world with a potent new economic species. “Social Capitalism” shares prosperity more widely, institutionalizes broader national democracy, and creates long-term environmental sustainability. It includes universal healthcare that's affordable, education for all that is often free, family-friendly work policies, and real worker participation in corporate decision-making. Europe watcher Steven Hill believes it may be the most important innovation in the world economy since the rise of the corporation – and we all have a “ringside seat to history.”

The Curator Podcast – Episode 10: Derrick Johnston from Make that a Take RecordsMy fascination (or perhaps obsession) with punk rock began when I was 12 years old. I heard ‘Pretty Fly for a White Guy' by The Offspring on the radio and instantly fell in love. It's probably a stretch of even the most liberal definition of what punk is to place that song in the category of “punk rock”, but through it I bought Americana, and from that I heard Smash and the rest is, as they say, history. We find comfort in familiarity. The comfort zone is a very real and often very dangerous thing. How can we expect to grow as people if we never challenge ourselves? How can we expect to overcome stagnation and boredom if we never try new things? Right now I'm in the comfort zone – talking to people with whom I'm reasonably confident that I'll share common ground with. Punk fans. Punk bands. People who I'm pretty sure had similar eye opening, brain expanding moments to the one I had back when I was 12 years old.I have a number of interviews lined up which are definitely outside of my comfort zone, and you'll get to hear those in the coming weeks but for now, I'm sticking to what I know.My guest today is Derrick from Make That a Take Records. Deeker has been running Make That a Take for almost ten years. The DIY ethos that the label espouses is one that I try to follow in any of my creative endeavours (this one included). This interview reminds me a lot of the one I did with Steven Hill from Struggletown Records, and both labels seem to be cut from the same cloth: this is about passion, and helping people out, creating a supportive community and hopefully making some new friends along the way. When I started playing live around the Glasgow music scene at the age of about 20, Make that a Take were one of the first punk record labels I'd ever knew of in Scotland. It's also just occurred to me that they probably started around the same time that I did nine and a bit years ago. Their approach and drive hasn't changed at all in that time, and hearing Deeker talk about the things he loves is, I hope you'll find. Inspirational.Highlights include:Being in a punk band from an early ageComing from a small town and having no other option but to be DIYThe genesis of Make that a Take RecordsStuck in Summertime and Book Yer Ane Fest.Rubbing up against commercial interestThe success of the labelDIY gigs, finding venues and having your shit togetherI hope you enjoy the interview.Podcasting ResourcesI mentioned in the intro that there's a ton of great resources out there if you want to start your own podcast. In the podcasting world sometimes things change.Originally I had planned to release an episode with Lags and Stu from Gallows but alas, it is not to be. Maybe next week. All is not lost however, and in my attempts to be the most prepared man ever when it comes to…well, everything in life, I have other episodes queued up. So today I bring you an interview with DIY record label mogul Steven Hill from Struggletown Records. If you're a Glasgow native like me, and you've been involved in the local music scene for a number of years, then it's pretty safe to say that Struggletown is something of a local success story. Their growth has been steady since they started back in 2011 and they've moved from releasing records for local bands to doing releases with international artists like Koji, Into It. Over It. Shook Ones and Death is Not Glamorous. There is surely much more to come.We cover a lot of ground in the podcast, and I'm really eager for you to listen to it so I won't give away too much here. Some key points:The work/life/stress balanceThe genesis of Struggletown and skateboardingSome of the cool bands they've worked withThe biggest inspirations behind the label, like Dischord Records and the DIY ethos of hardcore punk musicBiggest successes and failuresGrowing up around “alternative music”And a whole bunch of bands were mentioned too: Armor for Sleep, Floorpunch, H2O, Champion, Carry On, Jimmy Eat World, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit among others. The most heartening thing about this interview for me was how similar our musical discovery was as we grew up, and how that fed into the DIY ethos that's present throughout all of Struggletown's endeavours.I enjoyed the length of this podcast and I hope you do too. Podcasting offers the listener an opportunity to spend time with a person, and in these conversations I'm just the instigator, I try my best to let the interviewee talk as much as they want for as long as they want. That way we can get to know them a little better. Sometimes that can be quite difficult to do when you’re sitting in the back of a tour van or when you’ve only been given an alloted amount of time to spend with someone. But when you get into a relaxed environment and spend a bit of time just shooting the shit with someone, that’s what really makes the conversation flow. I’m sure as I get better at this I’ll be able to make the conversation flow no matter where the interview is taking place.I hope you enjoy it. Please take some time to check out the label and the music they offer. You should sign up to my newsletter – I only send out one a week it and all it contains are ten cool news storys from the past week in the music/media/film and TV world.
