In this episode of On the Brink with Andi Simon, we had the pleasure of sitting down with TaRita Johnson, Senior Vice President of Talent and Diversity at The Right Place, a Michigan-based economic development organization. Throughout her career, TaRita has championed diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and has helped organizations grow by embracing a more diverse workforce. She shared her insightful journey, revealing diversity's critical role in creating thriving, successful workplaces, and she introduced us to her powerful leadership model: VOICE. Watch this podcast here TaRita's Journey: A Commitment to Building Inclusive Communities From the beginning, TaRita's path has been shaped by her passion for promoting equity and opportunity. She shared with us how her early career experiences, paired with her background in education, shaped her belief that talent comes from all walks of life and that it's the role of leaders to create environments where all individuals feel valued and heard. Having spent years working in roles that intersect leadership, human resources, and diversity efforts, TaRita emphasized how essential it is to build intentional communities within organizations. She explained that DEI is not just a strategy but a core component of business success, enabling organizations to unlock new perspectives, ideas, and approaches. This philosophy has driven her work at The Right Place, where she is tasked with developing programs that help businesses attract, retain, and elevate diverse talent pools. In her role, TaRita tackles not only the recruitment aspect of diversity but also the equally important work of fostering belonging within an organization. She stressed that companies must focus on hiring individuals from diverse backgrounds and creating inclusive environments where employees feel empowered to contribute their full selves. VOICE: Vision, Open to New Ideas, Intentional Community, Compassion, Emotional Intelligence One of the most intriguing aspects of our conversation was TaRita's introduction to her leadership philosophy, which she sums up with the acronym VOICE. She explained that This framework serves as a guide for how leaders can foster diversity and inclusion in the workplace while empowering their teams to thrive. Jacaranda FM — Starvation isn’t a new sensation for South Africans. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, hunger was a common adversary for millions living in poverty. But after a national lockdown brought economic activity to a halt, as much as 34% of the population experienced its pangsWhile feeding schemes sprouted up around the country to support struggling communities, the needs of animals often came in second, or not at all. “Having a full tummy isn’t just a necessity for humans, but for all living creatures,” Imogen Tarita says. Filling bowls and hearts, this volunteer for the Cluny Animal Trust is making hungry pets her priority. Tarita and her team ensure that pets in impoverished communities in the Free State receive veterinary care. But after the lockdown rendered families jobless and without income, they watched as animals’ wellbeing grew weaker. “An individual should not have to choose whether they feed themselves or their pet,” Tarita says. “We had to do something.” Shifting their focus from medical support to meals, the organisation began packaging parcels of food and distributing them to malnourished animals. Relying solely on donations, the team has received enough food and funds from the local community to nourish over 1 000 pets during this challenging time. “Being able to feed animals that would've gone hungry is very rewarding because you know that you’re doing something important,” Tarita says. With a great number of pets still needing support, they will stop at nothing to ensure they receive it. What may seem like a small act of kindness to us can have a huge impact on the life of an animal.
The protests spurred on by the deaths of Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others, have turned everyone's attention to the serious racism pandemic in the U.S. and beyond. In the career development world, we've known for a long time about systemic biases and oppression that harm racial and ethnic minorities in general and Black Americans in particular, but change has been slow and profound problems seem entrenched. What are some things that those of us working in career development can do differently (or better) to support students or clients who are people of color? How can we work on a broader structural level to ensure that purposeful work is not only for the privileged few, but can be experienced by everyone? And how can people of faith, specifically, contribute? In this episode we welcome TaRita Johnson, MSW, director of the Career Center at Calvin University, to discuss racism, structural oppression, justice, and hope for a renewed world.Support the show (http://pathwayu.com)

Tarita Thomas Tanya Leake Health care in the U.S.is unfortunately both sexist and racist. As a result Women have struggled and suffered with health issues, often unnecessarily, because of the bias in health care that understudies women's health issues, especially sexual and reproductive health issues and then ignores, dismisses and shames women when they need help. Today we talk to Wellness experts Tanya Leake and Tarita Thomas who have been offering a holistic alternative to women's health for over a decade, that they created after struggling with their own health issues, and now are co creating a revolutionary peer-centered information platform to address the misinformation and dismissal of women's health issue by providing a space called WeKnow (Women embracing the Knowledge Necessary for Our Wellness) where women can share their own stories with Cramps, Fibroids & Endometriosis. This is revolutionary because we know sharing our stories and supporting each other is the way we take control of our own bodies and create a new notion of health based in our own intuitive and shared knowledge as women. Tarita Thomas was diagnosed with Endometriosis at the age of 12. None of the options her doctors offered helped, so she spent the next 30 years suffering, researching answers and seeking relief.
