Dry Creek Vineyard winemaker Tim Bell is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger today. Tim has been on CWC a few times but the last one was this episode on August 4, 2021. Dan Berger gives credit to Tim Bell for making wines that are interesting for their subtlety. He tells how his first exposure to wine was in retail. He went to UC Davis, worked at a custom crush facility for a while, then at Freemark Abbey for 10 years making Rutherford Cabernet. From there he worked at Kunde estate, where they had more then 600 acres of vineyards. After five years there, he got the opportunity to move to Dry Creek Vineyard. It is one of the rare family-owned wineries that is still in the hands of the original family owners. The other winemaker is Brian Pruett. Sauvignon Blanc in Dry Creek Valley Dan Berger talks about when David Stare planted Sauvignon Blanc in Dry Creek Valley, he had an intuition that it would work, but nobody knew yet. Tim describes a lot of the varietals that they have planted. Visit Chigazola Merchants online to shop their unique selection of fine Italian wines. They have a 2022 Chardonnay from Marchelle, Greg La Follette's brand. After all these whites, they also have some Zinfandel. Dry Creek Vineyards claims credit for being the first winery to use the term "Old Vines" on the label. There are several old vineyards in the area that are also family-owned, which produce fruit that they use. These vineyards are field blends of Zinfandel with a scattering of other varieties. There are head-trained vines and are dry farmed. Dan detects a violet spice and bay leaf flavors. But the best part is the structure, which makes it ideal for food like pizza. The one they are tasting is a 2021.

There's no such thing as a former KGB man, writes Mark Hollingsworth. Is the FSB an intelligence agency gone out of control, accountable to no one but itself and intent on subverting Western political institutions? The scale of Russian disinformation warfare and Active Measures is huge even when compared to their activities at the height of the Cold War. In 1985, 1,300 KGB officers were stationed in the USA. The FBI only had 350 counter-intelligence officers. Since the early days of the Cold War, the KGB seduced parliamentarians and diplomats, infiltrated the highest echelons of the Civil Service, and planted fake news in papers across the world. More disturbingly, it never stopped. ~~~~~ Mark Hollingsworth is an investigative journalist and author of 10 books, notably ‘Londongrad – From Russia with Cash, the Inside Story of the Oligarchs' – published in 2010. In the 2000s, London became home to the Russian super-rich. Vast wealth was stripped from Russia by the Oligarchs, and flaunted in London through grandiose properties, ferocious legal disputes, private jets, mega-yachts, and ubiquitous bodyguards. Russian oligarchs made colossal fortunes after the collapse of communism, and London was the destination of choice to spend and protect their wealth. But the shocking killing of ex-KGB man Alexander Litvinenko in London with a radio-active element Polonium, and of Stephen Curtis, the lawyer to many of Britain's richest Russians, sent shockwaves through the Russian community in London. Today I'm speaking with Mark Hollingsworth about how Russia's wealth was harvested and brought to London, and how the UK's institutions and legal infrastructure facilitated the laundering of these vast fortunes, many of dubious provenance. In an incredibly brave and vulnerable interview, artist Tim Beall discusses the inner battles he endures as he pursues his art.  Growing up in an environment that he describes as being synonymous with "toxic masculinity", Beall speaks to the struggle to acknowledge his drive to be creative that brought him from athlete to artist. Tim Bell began serious painting study with the well-known portrait painter Cedric Egeli in 1994 and assisted Cedric in teaching color painting at the Cape Cod School of Art. Tim studied briefly with Maryland Impressionist John Ebersberger, who introduced him to George T. Thurmond. It was Thurmond, a devoted student of the late Henry Hensche, who Tim credits with having taught him the principles of the Hensche method of painting. A painting trip to Scotland in year 2006 was a significant turning point in Tim's methods and style of painting.  It brought new ideas and a fresh vision as he added tonalist color theory to his palette.  Painting trips in following summers to Cape Cod, Gloucester, and Monhegan Island cemented these color theories and a painting friendship with Robert Gruppe. Tim uses oils and a combination of palette knives and brushes on canvas to create his paintings that are a tribute to the rich artistic heritage of American plein air painting. For a period of time Tim had the unique experience of working on a fishing boat on the Chesapeake Bay.  It was this experience that gave him an appreciation of the majesty and unique history of oyster boats under sail.  The Chesapeake Bay, the skipjacks, bugeyes and schooners that ply its waters are some of his favorite painting subjects. He also enjoys frequent painting trips to New England, Scotland and Italy. Tim's paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions. He is an active participant in plein air painting competitions and is a sought-after instructor for his oil painting workshops. His paintings hang in private collections throughout the United States and Great Britain and are also included in the collection of Frostburg State University. In 2004 Tim was honored to be juried into the "Sunlight and Shadow" exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. In the 2006 Paint Easton plein air painting competition, Tim Bell won the Grand Prize for his oil painting of skipjacks on the Chesapeake Bay. He has won many awards since then, including the 2009 Plein Air Easton Artists Choice Award and the Best Marine painting. Hello and welcome to the Business of Architecture. I'm your host Rion Willard. This week I am speaking with Tim Bell, Hari Phillips, and Melissa Dowler, the Directors and Co-Founders of Bell Phillips Architects. In this conversation, we talk about how Tim and Hari founded the practice and what sorts of challenges a younger practice might be facing now if they were to follow the same route. We go deep into public procurement, some of the constraints about it, but most importantly, the power of doing public work and why it's important for architects to be engaged with it. We get some deep insight into how we can approach tenders, bids, framework agreements, and how to structure practice profitability. So sit back, relax, and enjoy Tim Bell, Hari Phillips, and Melissa Dowler. Bell Phillips architects was established in 2004 after Tim Bell and Hari Phillips won an international design competition to carry out a major regeneration project in East London. From this first £8 million project the practice has grown and diversified with a portfolio that currently includes a wide range of projects across a number of sectors. The practice has a strong track record of high quality design demonstrated through high profile competition wins, awards and features in publications and exhibitions. Nevertheless our approach is grounded in a fundamental understanding of the technical, financial and practical issues which ensures that our designs are viable and deliverable. We work at all stages from feasibility studies, through to planning applications, detail design and production information.   THIS WEEK'S RESOURCES Access your free training at http://SmartPracticeMethod.com/ If you want to speak directly to our advisors, book a call at https://www.businessofarchitecture.com/call Bell Phillips' LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/bell-phillips-architects/ Bell Phillips Architects: https://www.bellphillips.com/

David Stare Dry Creek Vineyard founder David Stare and daughter Kim Stare Wallace join Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. Tom Simoneau is in the studio today. Dry Creek Vineyard was Tom's Winery of the Year for 2021. This year they celebrate their fiftieth anniversary. They got the front cover of Wine Spectator magazine too. They are one of the last truly private, family owned wineries in Sonoma County. David Stare grew up in Boston, MA. After graduating college and getting an MBA, he got a job in Germany for a steel company. On weekends, he visited wineries. Then in June 1970 he spent two months in France and decided he wanted to get into the wine business. When he saw an article in the Wall Street Journal about the potential for the wine business in California, it was a sign. In the summer of 1971 he and his family moved to California and he enrolled in courses at UC Davis. He realized that northern Sonoma County had a tradition of grape growing and so he bought a run down prune orchard in 1972 and the rest is history. In summer 1972 he tried to get a use permit for a winery at his house, which the neighbors objected to. So he was forced to build his winery down the hill. Today, he is glad they are located where they are, because he considers it to be the prime spot in the valley. Tom Simoneau even bottled his first wine at Dry Creek. Fumé Blanc They taste the 2021 Fumé Blanc, their fiftieth vintage. He always liked Fumé Blanc and he planted Sauvignon Blanc even if people told him it was not a good area for it But David turned out to be right. This is their flagship wine and they were the first Sonoma County winery to sell it. Robert Mondavi used the term, and they found that Fumé Blanc sold better than Sauvignon Blanc by 3-1, even if it is just an old-fashioned term for the wine. This sells for $11.99 at Bottle Barn. It was just listed as Wine Spectator's number seven of best values on the market. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the best deals on wine, beer and spirits, including many Dry Creek Vineyard wines. Then they taste the 2019 Heritage Vines Zinfandel, which was Tom Simoneau's Zinfandel of the Year last year. Chenin Blanc still sells well, which used to be the most popular white varietal. Dry Creek Vineyard wines have moderate alcohol and good acidity, so they age well. Steve Jaxon mentions Tim Bell, Dry Creek Vineyards' winemaker, who has been on this show before. Tim Bell joined the staff of Dry Creek Vineyard in 2011, which was a difficult harvest. He used to work at Freemark Abbey and before that, worked in retail. He also worked for Kunde when that family owned the winery. Meritage The Dry Creek Vineyards 2018 Meritage is “a killer” says Tom Simoneau. David Stare was around when the term Meritage was created, a portmanteau between Merit and Heritage. Dan Berger organized a contest in 1988 to find this name and one guy from the East Bay came up with it. They make two blends, this one called Mariner, is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon. Both of them celebrate the Bordeaux varietals in Dry Creek Valley. This wine has an “under the radar tannic structure” says Barry Herbst. They have time for one more red, a 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with a little bit of other Bordeaux varieties. David Stare was making Bordeaux blends here in Dry Creek Valley before they became fashionable. All the blends in Bordeaux are blended to some extent. They are located in the heart of Dry Creek Valley, off the 101 at Dry Creek Road. The place is wide open and beautiful. Most of their tastings are outside right now and they have beautiful gardens and are open 10:30 to 4:30, open every day. Reservations are encouraged. There is a very active wine club, with many single vineyard wines in small amounts.

Today Tom Simoneau has brought Tim Bell, winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyard, to be our guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon. Harry Duke is also in the studio and Dan Berger is away judging the Mendocino wine competition. Tim Bell was a guest on California Wine Country in an episode that first aired on March 22, 2017. He was here again along with Dry Creek Vineyard founder David Stare in this episode from May 29, 2019. Tim Bell begins by telling his personal history in the wine business. He worked for a wine retailer in Southern California called Liquor Barn, where he became acquainted with wine. He later attended UC Davis and he has been working in the business for 30 years now. Dry Creek Vineyard was founded by David Stare in 1972, part of a wave of new wineries that brought modern winemaking to California, including Chateau Montelena, Stag's Leap and Burgess Cellars. They are known as the Class of '72. They are planning some big parties for their 50th anniversary next year, along with several other North Coast wineries.  “Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc continue to be staples for us today,” says Tim Bell. Dry Creek is best known for Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. They are taste the Dry Creek Vineyard 2020 Sauvignon Blanc. This sells for $20, which is a bargain for a good one. Next they taste a Dry Creek Vineyard 2019 Chardonnay, which is sold out. Steve, whose middle name is Chardonnay, loves it. They only make about 700 cases of this wine. They only pick from their favorite spots. In another month the 2020 will be out and it will be at least this good. Their best well known wine is Fumé Blanc which is a mix of Dry Creek and Russian River Valley grapes. This wine is a second take on that, but with only Dry Creek fruit, and they also use some Sauvignon Musque and Sauvignon Gris. It has taken a few years for the vineyard to reach maturity but it's there now. Tom Simoneau says it's not too green, new mown hay. Tim Bell tastes ripe Meyer lemon, lime and a hint of peach or apricot. They do a limited amount of barrel fermentation but they don't use new oak. They use older barrels, which may have held Chardonnay for a few years. They also use Acacia wood barrels, which have floral and minty notes. They also use 2-3% chestnut wood barrels, which add a vanilla cream quality David Stare was quite a pioneer. Tom Simoneau says that we are in the middle of the golden years of winemaking and Dave is a friend. David Stare founded the winery and his daughter Kim Stare Wallace is President now of Dry Creek Vineyard. She is on the cover of Wine Spectator this issue. Dry Creek Vineyard is open outdoors by appointment only, since Covid. They are located on Dry Creek Road at the corner of Lambert Bridge Road, right across from the Dry Creek General Store. Harry Duke asks what has to happen to a used barrel, before it can be used again. Tim Bell describes the cleaning process. You would never put a white wine in a red barrel. After 3 years, the oak flavor is used up. So a neutral barrel is its own individual fermentation tank. Especially with Sauvignon Blanc, the fermentation happens in one big steel tank. But with barrel fermentation, different barrels will have different characters, which add different layers of complexity Next they taste a 2018 Dry Creek Vineyard Estate Zinfandel from the Wallace Ranch. This single vineyard zinfandel is from a vineyard right across from the winery. They make a wine called Heritage Vine Zinfandel that sourced budwood from an old Zinfandel vineyard, the Mazzone selection. They have it in 4 different estate vineyards, and each has its own personality. It's 95% Zin and 5% Petit Syrah. It's available only through the winery or the wine club. Then they taste the second Zin. Tom Simoneau noticed the smoothness of the first Zin, this one is the 2019 and it's a little softer. It was a cooler vintage, says Tim. This is a little lower in alcohol compared to some other big Zins.

“Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.” John 15:4   For True Vine Sunday, we hear the beautiful parable of the True Vine. In this parable, we find that Jesus has invited us to a relationship that is even closer that the relationship between the Shepherd and his sheep. He is the Vine, we are the branches, so close, sharing the same risen life.  And it is His Father, the Vinedresser who is the one taking care of the True Vine and all the branches.  We are called to remain and then we know we will bear fruit.  Rebekah Rojcewicz referred to this parable as the  “linchpin” parable for children nine to twelve,  in her book “Life in the Vine: The Joyful Journey Continues.”   What this means is that from these two parables everything that we do in our atria, and therefore in our spiritual lives, we are able to build off from these two parables. Over the last 60+ years in the atria the children have revealed to us the importance of these two parables in all of our spiritual lives.   We have invited Tim Bell to join us on the podcast today to speak about his work tending vines to shed new light on this important parable.   Tim Bell has received formation in all levels of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, including participation in the seminal Infant-Toddler formation in Wales.  He has primarily served as a level 3 catechist in St. Helena, CA.  His wife, Jennifer Bell, is a catechist and formation leader, and his daughter, Emma, has also served as a level 1 catechist.  Tim also was blessed with the opportunity to assist his wife at a level 1 formation in Rome given to the Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity in 2019.   Tim's vocation is winemaker.  He has made wine in Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, and the Central Coast of California.  Currently he is winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyard.  You can find some of the fruits of his labor at www.drycreekvineyard.com.  Tim and Jennifer live in Santa Rosa, CA, and love immersing themselves in nature, especially when paddling their kayaks.   Links to purchase the following books   Life in the Vine: The Joyful Journey Continues:  https://app.etapestry.com/cart/CatechesisGoodShepherd/default/item.php?ref=628.0.1178214665   Ways to Nurture the Relationship with God:  https://app.etapestry.com/cart/CatechesisGoodShepherd/default/item.php?ref=628.0.449804387   Learn more about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at www.cgsusa.org   Follow us on Social Media- Facebook at “The United States Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd” Instagram-  cgsusa Twitter- @cgsusa Pinterest- Natl Assoc of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd USA YouTube- oneofhisheep

You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that the original name for Providence was Providence Plantation? Prior to 2020, the state's official name was State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. State Senator Harold Metts introduced a resolution for another ballot referendum on removing the words "and Providence Plantations" from the state's name, saying, "Whatever the meaning of the term 'plantations' in the context of Rhode Island's history, it carries a horrific connotation when considering the tragic and racist history of our nation." Now for our feature story: Rhode Island has surpassed 2,500 deaths from the coronavirus. In a state of just over 1 million people, this is a heady proposition. According to the CDC, more than 500,000 people in the US have passed away due to Covid as we approach the 1 year anniversary shutdowns related to the virus. The Rhode Island Department of Public Health said last Saturday morning that the state death total from the virus sat at 2,502 even though there has been some positive news. Cases are trending downwards and Rhode Island has outperformed the states with the worst infection rates, having a flatter and less spiky rate of infection. The health department also had promising news with nearly 68,000 Rhode Islanders now fully vaccinated against the virus and more doses on the way.  As a reminder, Rhode Island has one of the country's oldest populations and remaining vigilant and careful over the next few months is especially important as vaccinations rates increase and the threat of coronavirus hopefully comes to an end. For more about the latest covid stories in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Camplin's Marina and Resort on Block Island. They're looking for a dock team lead. Duties are varied and a familiarity with all things maritime is a must. Wages start at $30.00 per hour. For some time he held a post with the company in Montreal. After the film division was dissolved, Tim moved to Stonington, Conn., where he established Peaceable Kingdom Antiques. He became active in the local theater group and the yacht-racing community. Tim lived his best life in recent decades, with Marianna Wilcox, her stepfamily, and their many friends. He also renewed ties with his relatives. In addition to reveling in the antiques trade, Tim served as Treasurer of the Stonington Land Trust, and was previously a member of the Stonington Conservation Commission. He was an avid naturalist and boater. A master conversationalist, Tim gathered with his loved ones for celebrations at home and at the Wadawanuck Yacht Club. He devotedly cared for Marianna in her final illness. Tim leaves his children, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and the Streeter family. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Tim's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! In this episode Emmett Scanlon talks to Hari Phillips in London. Hari tells his side of the story about one housing project he and his architecture practice completed in 2018 on the Kipling Estate in London. It is a fascinating story of community initiative, ambition, local authority support and clear commitment and dedication by the architects and all involved to make solid, sustainable housing that felt like it was alway there but would ensure the resident community would thrive long into the future. Hari co-founded Bell Phillips Architects with Tim Bell in 2004 after winning an international design competition to carry out a major housing estate refurbishment project in East London. The architecture practice has developed a strong reputation for working with public sector clients to deliver outstanding housing and community buildings, with particular experienced in delivering schemes through collaborative community and stakeholder engagement. One such project is Marklake Court, a community-led affordable housing scheme built on the site of an underused garage block in Southwark, heralded by The Guardian as "a beacon for the delivery of low cost housing across the capital”. Music is by Sinead Finnegan, played by the Delmaine Sting Quartet. This conversation was recorded online.

This is stipulated by article 27 GDPR. But does this really happen? The EU Member States seem to have concerns. In their evaluation report of the GDPR, they say it is uncertain to what extent controllers and processors from third countries have complied with the Representation obligation. Apparently, there are cases where a representative has not been designated. Reason enough to dive a bit deeper into this topic and discuss the role of the representative and how to appoint one. David Stare and Tim Bell from Dry Creek Vineyards are our guests on California Wine Country today. Tom Simoneau is in with Steve Jaxon, Dan Berger and Barry Herbst from Bottle Barn. Tim Bell was last on this show back in 2017. David Stare founded Dry Creek Vineyards in 1972 and Tim Bell is their winemaker. David grew up in Boston and then lived and worked for a couple of years in Germany. He was right on the Rhine River and he would visit many wineries there. He returned to the US in 1969 but in 1970 he visited France and went to a lot of wineries. That’s when he decided he wanted to work in wine. He moved to California in 1971, studied enology and viticulture at UC Davis. He visited a lot of the wine regions and decided to focus on northern Sonoma County, in and around the town of Healdsburg. In April of 1972 he found the property where his winery is now located. They started with about 50 acres and now they have about 150 in different places. David was first to plant Sauvignon Blanc in Dry Creek Valley and the first to produce a Fumé Blanc in Sonoma County. At the time, there were only three producers in Dry Creek Valley, Pedroncelli, Frye Brothers (now the Gallo facility) and one other, where Wilson Winery is now located. Tim Bell got started in wine “sort of accidentally” when he lived in Southern California and got a job at a wine shop. He simply started learning more and more and “quickly got caught up in the romance.” He liked that it combined his artistic and scientific interests. He graduated from UC Davis in 1994 with a Fermentation Science degree. He has been at Dry Creek Vineyards since 2011. Tom says that Dry Creek Vineyard is known for Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc but they also have Chenin Blanc. In 1973, they planted Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and some Chardonnay. David Spade tells how he originally wanted to put his winery on his home property but when his neighbors opposed it, one of the county Supervisors promised him he could build anything on another property of his. He says turned out to be the best place to build and he is glad it worked out that way. “I think my stars that my neighbors opposed me… We have the plum spot in Dry Creek Valley.” The Beginnings of Sauvignon Blanc in Dry Creek Valley Dan Berger says that Dave was visionary to put Sauvignon Blanc in Dry Creek Valley because they are so perfectly matched. The leading viticulturalist in Sonoma County came for some soil tests and declared it was good for grapes. When David asked if Sauvignon Blanc was good for there, nobody thought it was appropriate. But he took the gamble and it has worked splendidly. At the time Sauvignon Blanc was not well known or respected. Dave remembers that Barney Fetzer said that they called some Sauvignon Blanc “Fumé Blanc” and it outsold the other by 3 to 1. They taste a 2018 Sauvignon Blanc which Steve really likes. Tim Bell explains that this wine has characterists that differentiate it from the Fumé Blanc. It is a smaller bottling than the Fumé Blanc. It is picked at a higher ripeness, it comes from a clone of Sauvignon Blanc that is more floral, and uses also a little Sauvignon Gris that gets a little copper gray color. On the other hand, the Fumé Blanc is picked at lower ripeness, uses only stainless steel fermentation, so cool temperature fermentation. The Sauvignon Blanc uses a small amount, 16-18%, of barrel fermentation. They use hardly any new oak. They use some Acacia wood barrels and some Chestnut wood barrels. After some trials he settled on that because they really let the aromatics of Sauvignon Blanc come forward in a way that new oak does not. Tom Simoneau says it is almost grassy, grapefruity, lively, good acidity, cleanses the palette well. David has been a fan of the New Zealand style. Dan says this is dryer than the New Zealand ones. Barry says it is one of the best sellers at Bottle Barn and wins a lot of awards. David Stare was the first to release a wine using ...

This podcast episode is a repeat of the show from March 22, 2017, with Tim Bell, winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyard. (This week's live radio show has been pre-empted by a Golden State Warrior's basketball game on our home station KSRO.) The first tasting is a Rosé from Bonny Doon Vineyards in Santa Cruz. Dry Creek Vineyards was celebrating their 45th anniversary (last year when the show was recorded). Today they will celebrate with tastings of their Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, a Zinfandel and a blended red. First, Dan Berger opens a bottle of A Proper Pink, a rosé produced by Randall Graham, owner and “king for life” of Bonny Doon Vineyard in Santa Cruz. It is a slightly sweet Rosé, made with 69% Tannat and 31% Cabernet Franc. Dan explains that to make Rosé you have to get the skins out of the juice pretty quickly. Steve asked Tim Bell to describe how he got into the wine business. He grew up in Southern California and worked for the Liquor Barn chain and got interested in wine. He studied winemaking at UC Davis, graduated in 1994 and did an internship at Gloria Ferrer, then worked at a few different wineries including Freemark Abbey, for 10 years. Now he has been at Dry Creek for 6 years, since 2011 In 2017 Dry Creek Vineyard was celebrating the 45th anniversary of their first vintage and we will taste these Dry Creek Vineyard wines: Chenin Blanc: Dan says this is the best Chenin Blanc he has ever tasted. Chenin Blanc to be popular in California but today only a few thousand acres of it remain, mostly for jug wine. It is dry, has beautiful melon fruit and subtle spices of green tea. Dan points out that chilling this wine covers the sugars and gives it a weightiness from the sugar which shows up as texture rather than as sweetness. Sauvignon Blanc: Dry Creek Vineyard planted the first Sauvignon Blanc in Dry Creek Valley. The pioneers tried different vines to see what varieties were appropriate for each region. Dan tells that when David Stare planted Sauvignon Blanc in the 1970s, it reminded him of the Loire Valley. He and Robert Mondavi adopted the name Fumé Blanc for the wine. Tim Bell says that the Loire Valley was David’s inspiration. Some other grapes that go into its blend and Dan says the aromatics are fascinating, with hints of chamomille. Tim also tastes ripe limes. This variety has a tendency to show its distinctiveness based on the weather and soil where it is planted. For this reason, some regions give green herb flavors while others do not. Tim agrees, having made Sauvignon Blanc from different regions. It also has a tendency to show its distinctiveness based on the weather and soil where it is planted. Some regions have green herb flavors, others, do not. Tim agrees, as he has made Sauvignon Blanc from different regions. When talking to somelliers in restaurants, Dan discovered that that patrons who ordered Sauvignon Blanc ended up spending more money on their checks because they would order two bottles. Steve asks Dan to sum up the history of Dry Creek. When David Stare planted Sauvignon Blanc, he discovered it was an ideal place for it to grow. Pedroncelli was another pioneer, with Zinfandel. The Dry Creek area was important for home wine making during Prohibition. Since in certain states it was illegal to make wine even at home, they shipped “wine bricks” with “warnings” saying, “do not add 30 gallons of water and some sugar or else this will ferment.” 2014 Old Vine Zinfandel: This grape ripens unevenly and Tim says this contributes to its unique flavor. Dan finds flavors of black pepper and mocha, not woody, but cocoa-like and black cherry and raspberry. Steve finds that it is smooth, and doesn’t "slap him in the face" like some Zins. Dan says there is a handful of California Zins that deliver this kind of fruit in the $60 range, but this one sells for $38, a great bargain. 2013 The Mariner, a Bordeaux-inspired blend. Tim says the wine changes from year to year,

This podcast is a conversation between political cartoonist Martin Rowson and writer Neil Gaiman, originally recorded for Index on Censorship. In it, Gaiman and Rowson talk about Alan Moore and Milo Minara, whether comics are unrepentantly in the gutter,  how the work of Hogarth and Gilray speaks across the centuries, how the bible contains more shocking stuff than they could make up, and how as children and teenagers they were enthralled by Judge Dredd. ....................... Martin Rowson:   I wanted to talk about various themes. I wanted to talk about the visual and I wanted to talk about offence - how things are offensive and why they are in different ways. Have you caught up on this nonsense over here on Hilary Mantel’s short story the Assassination of Margaret Thatcher? Neil Gaiman: Yes! I thought it was wonderful. I haven’t read the story, but I’ve read an interview with her and saw the thing from Sir Lord Emperor Bell.  I thought it was wonderful that column inches in newspapers were being given to a short story. There’s part of you that’s going, as long as people are getting upset, then a medium is not dead. And as long as a poem could send the editor of Gay News to prison in 1979 you knew that poetry was not dead. And as long as Tim Bell can call for the arrest of Hilary Mantel for writing a story you know that the short story is not dead. Having said that, what for me immediately flashed up was some of these cases in America - some stuff that I’ve dealt with directly and some stuff that has just crossed my screen - where people would find themselves essentially arrested for ‘thought crimes’. Where people would write short stories -  in which people would die, in which illegal sexual acts would occur, in which bad things happened -  and find themselves under arrest, find themselves losing their jobs. MR: It’s happening here, people sending texts about legal practices like fisting, it’s illegal to send a text about a legal practice like fisting.    Likewise.  I was tweeting last week about how grateful I was that Tim Bell showed himself to be so indestructibly stupid to actually say somebody’s got to be investigated by the police because of something they’ve made up in their head, which hasn’t happened, which isn’t real. I’ve got a quote here, “A nice easy place for freedom of speech to be eroded is comics because comics are a natural target whenever an election comes up.” We’re both of an age where we can remember they were impounding Robert Crumb coming into Britain in the late 70s. NG: The last Robert Crumb thing that I remember was about 1987 or 1988 and it was particularly notable because on the one hand customs were impounding Crumb stuff coming into the country and it was stuff being imported to tie in with a BBC 2 Arena special on Robert Crumb! MR: I always feel very uneasy about attempts to make the medium respectable. I actually think when there are Arena specials about Robert Crumb, that’s when the medium is dying. Attempts to turn what is essentially a specific genre which works in a specific way within the ecology of all fiction, shouldn’t be up there with the Booker Prize. It shouldn’t be treated as if it is respectable. That’s probably the satirist in me, because in the word of newspapers, I am down in the servants' quarters drinking Mackeson, while my journalist colleagues are up in the drawing room drinking schooners of sherry!  But you are a global star, treated with respect by a large group of people – don’t you feel that you should being doing something to get your books burnt in the high streets of America and indeed Britain? NG: You covered three different things here. You’ve nipped carefully from topic to topic. The first is comics as gutter medium, yes or no? I would definitely put my vote in for yes. Partly because I loved being part of a gutter medium. I loved the fact that most of my life was spent writing comics and that anything else was just tiny h...
