Hi lovely! Thanks for listening! I have to remind myself of this every so often…that self-care isn't self-ish. It's tough as hell sometimes isn't it? We don't wanna be seen as ‘mean' or ‘rude' or ‘selfish' for goodness sakes. We don't wanna be seen as excluding others either but when you think about it we're actually excluding ourselves. The Tonya Dalton quote “when you say yes to someone else, you say ‘no' to yourself”. This is so true. So a good giveaway to see if you're feeling disingenuous is if you're in fact you're saying no to yourself and if the answer is yes then you gotta reevaluate what you're doing because ‘self-care is not self-ish'. And another great quote by Iyanla Vanzant is “what's in our cups is for us, what's overflowing (in the saucer) is for everyone else”. I talk more about this on my newsletters or my ‘love letters' (as I like to call them). ;) Wanna get my newsletters? Here's the link to join the list! —> www.westelizabeth.com/newsletter. I hope you enjoy this episode and that it helps you in some way. Sincerely, Elizabeth --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/elizabeth-west47/message

If you are like many moms, you probably have a story you tell yourself about what a “good mom” does. And trying to live up to that story probably leaves you feeling unfulfilled and unproductive at the end of most days, asking yourself, “How can I be so busy and have so little to show for it?” Perhaps you need to live more by doing less and find the joy of missing out!   Tonya Dalton, author and productivity expert, cuts to the chase on these issues in her book The Joy of Missing Out and in her conversation with Marti and Erin, offering practical tips on how to find your purpose (your North star!), clarify your priorities and simplify your life. Here key take-aways include Erin's favorite, “Every time you say yes, you are saying no to something else,” and Marti's mantra, “To be truly productive, we need to give our brains a little space to play and explore.” Listen to this lively conversation and then reflect on what you can choose to miss out on so you can savor those things that are truly important to you. You will benefit and so will your children.   WHAT JOY MIGHT YOU FIND IN MISSING OUT? Thinking about the past couple of weeks, what things did you do that led you to ask, “Why did I say yes to this? How is this consistent with my values and purpose?” When you said yes to those activities, what were you saying no to? (For example, fun time with your children, maintaining your own health, getting enough sleep, taking steps toward an important goal.) What do you resolve to do differently in the next couple of weeks?   WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO MISS OUT? ❉ WHY “ME TIME” MATTERS: HOW YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN BENEFIT WHEN YOU TAKE TIME TO CARE FOR YOURSELF.  As a mom, you may feel guilty when you take time for yourself – enjoy some “ME Time”. You may worry that you're neglecting your children's needs if you go out with friends, have a date night with your partner, take time to go to a class, take a nap, exercise or even just relax in a hot bath. But, for many reasons, taking time for yourself can help you be a better mother and help your children be healthier, happier people, now and later. Tune in to learn why this time is so important (and why saying "No" means "Yes" to something else). ❉ The Joy of Missing Out. Episode 176 Usually, when people talk about productivity it feels stressful and is focused on quantity. This is NOT that kind of podcast episode. Tonya Dalton is a productivity coach who knows our days have a rhythm to them, life has an ebb and flow, and she even shares why you shouldn’t “eat the frog” first as most people will tell you (what a terrible way to start your day!). I bought Tonya’s book when I found myself being triggered by the idea of productivity and organization when hearing her speak. She was talking about productivity in a way that was so different and could actually help me.  Before implementing her concepts, I would often find myself starting Monday morning looking at my inbox and allowing my day to go into a downward spiral of responding to issues – often forgetting self-care and even the basics like drinking water!  This episode is about taking responsibility for choosing how we set up our day (even Tonya’s teenage son is doing it!).  I realized that if I want to live out my heart's passion of serving people then I need to be responsible for how much I can do in a day (hint: it can’t be EVERYTHING). Join us for this honest conversation about letting yourself find your passion if you haven’t yet, creating structure for your business and life wherever you are TODAY, and making sure to include some things you wouldn’t expect into your idea of productivity (like play!). It's not often you get to sit down with a productivity coach and talk about how watching episodes of Tiger King (totally guilty of this) and freethinking NEED to be part of your daily schedule. This is how productivity for creatives and spiritual people can feel, but it takes looking at that word differently.    Highlights you won’t want to miss: We think our story is written, but we get to write our stories ourselves. It's easier to go all-in when you understand your North. You’re probably not going to find your true north on the first “Why”… and how to go deeper. Make time to invest in yourself (it’s the only way!). How to structure your day differently than we’re used to. Our brain is not designed to work at full throttle all day. Quantity isn’t the way to measure productivity. Being satisfied is often left out of the equation (but shouldn’t be). How to understand what a true time waster is (it’s not watching Tiger King, whew.).   About Tonya: Tonya Dalton is a nationally recognized productivity expert, best-selling author, and speaker. She is a growth strategist for female leaders in the corporate and entrepreneurial sectors. She is a Mom to two teenagers and lives in Asheville, North Carolina. It’s important to think of your life holistically. You need work and home to both be running smoothly if you want to be your best self. Don’t forget about yourself. Our brains and bodies need rest, rejuvenation and investment.  The human brain has an ultradian rhythm which means it works hard for 90-120 minutes and then needs a break. It can’t work at full speed for 8 hours straight. Block time on your calendar to do your important work. This signals to colleagues that you’re not available. It’s OK to say no to a meeting or to ask for an agenda and decide if you should attend or what parts you should attend. Don’t let a 5 minute ‘quick question’ become a 30 minute conversation. If you’ve got other things to do, schedule a better time to discuss the topic or use a different mode of connection e.g. chat app or email. Put a sign on your door or on your chat availability that say you’re busy. Include what time you’ll be done so colleagues (or housemates) know when they can interrupt you again. Improve your habits. Use timers to set reminders, set routines for how you start and end your day. Share what matters to you with your team. Let them know of any time you’ve blocked for specific deep work. The more your team is aware of your goals and priorities, the more easily they can work in ways that allows you to focus. It also brings the team closer into alignment.  KEEP UP WITH TONYA Website: tonyadalton.com Facebook: tonyadalton.com/fb Book: joyofmissingout.com Instagram: @tonya.i.dalton   RESOURCES Book: How To Be An Inclusive Leader Episode 89: Growing into an Inclusive Leader with Jennifer Brown Color of Change https://colorofchange.org/ Equal Justice Initiative https://eji.org/racial-justice/ mamie@mamieks.com

This week, I was joined by my longtime friend, Founder and CEO of inkWELL Press Productivity Co., and author of “The Joy of Missing Out”, Tonya Dalton.   Tonya started her career as a kindergarten teacher, then transitioned into owning a jewelry company, and finally started her second company inkWELL Press Productivity Co., which became a seven-figure business within 18 months of its launch.   As a mother and CEO, Tonya has had to learn how best to live her most purposeful life without becoming a victim of mom guilt. In her interview, she made an important observation about how limiting beliefs always include the words “always” or “never”. For example “a good mom always packs her kids’ lunch” or “a good mom never stays late at work.” It was up to her to change what her image of an ideal mom was, and to construct her own image for what worked best for her family. Owning a successful business does not mean sacrificing time with your family.   She first came up with what she calls her “north star”, a combination of her mission, vision, and core values. With that in mind she crafted her schedule for her business and family. As Tonya said in her interview, CEO does not mean chief everything officer! It’s important to delegate when needed. It’s not about saying no, but it’s about what you say yes to.   Tonya also spoke about the choice we have over our own lives. We chose how we spend the day, but as she points out, it’s important to zoom out and look at the hours in the week, rather than focus on the limited hours of the day. Productivity isn’t about doing more, it’s about what’s important to you.   Because moms are the CEO of business’, and often, the house, Tonya wrote her book for women. Her book will help you identify your priorities and organize your life with resources and printables. It was named one of the top 10 business books of the year by Fortune magazine.   You can buy a copy of Tonya’s book “The Joy of Missing Out: Live More by Doing Less” at https://joyofmissingout.com/. We hear all the time about having FOMO, the fear of missing out. Well, she's kind of flipping the whole thing on its head and saying: actually, there's a joy in missing out on things. I have often fallen for the trap of thinking that a new system–a new calendar, a new journal, a new app–was all that I needed to keep me organized and bring order to the chaos.  But all around me are piles of half-filled calendars, abandoned bullet journals, and long lost apps–the evidence of well-meaning systems that I started only to later abandon. I know that it isn’t a flaw in the systems that’s the problem. It’s my own lack of commitment to these systems that is the problem. I know this truth, and yet I still struggle to live in that place. It is so much easier to just blame the freaking system. In January we are inundated with the new year, new you message. It is a time when starting a new system for change is particularly alluring. And all this month we have been taking a different look at how change works.  We’ve covered: setting New Year’s resolutions without succumbing to the hype, working through our challenges so that we can live a life that is true to our values, what Mr. Rogers can teach us about slowing down and being present, and how the concept of Spialling Up can be applied to a life long of growth and change.  I thought it would be nice to end the month on a conversation with Tonya. Tonya Dalton is a productivity expert, author, speaker, and founder of inkWELL Press Productivity Co, a company centered around productivity tools and training.  So, of course, when I started reading her book, The Joy of Missing Out, I was hopeful that Tonya could fix me with a shiny new system for finding joy in doing less. I soon realized that wasn't the case.  Instead, Tanya gets it. She understands the struggle. She isn’t about some “all you have to do is follow my system and you will be cured” way of thinking.  As you know, like most of my clients, my BS meter is pretty, and when I was reading Tonya’s book, it was like Tonya was reading my mind. Every objection I had, she had a way to make it approachable and doable.  Listen in to see which ones I've added to my life, and at the end of the interview, I'll share how it's still going.  Listen to the full episode to hear: What Tonya has to say about our love with the to-do list and how to think about it differently.  Why Tonya is so passionate about productivity.  What she sometimes calls ‘million-dollar minutes’ and how it will help you think about your time differently.  And how to work with resistance and the process of change  Links: inkWELL Press The Joy of Missing Out Productivity Paradox Podcast Tonya Dalton Facebook Tonya Dalton Instagram  Press Facebook inkWELL Press Instagram --- Helping people with High Functioning Anxiety is a personal mission for me. “Overwhelm is not having too much to do, it’s not knowing where to start,” says Tonya Dalton, serial entrepreneur and author of “The Joy of Missing Out: Live More by Doing Less” (https://amzn.to/2sa7598) a “mini course” in a new organization paradigm.  Dalton believes most productivity manuals fail women because they are written by men who can’t account for or understand the multi-faceted, multi-pressured lives real women lead.  “Women have a lot more guilt, lean in more to productivity and process things differently in our brains,” she says. Join this insightful conversation with CoveyClub founder, Lesley Jane Seymour, where Dalton explains that you must put your purpose, passion and priorities at the center of your life so you can “create structure for the weeks and days”.  She explains how to create a “priority list” with “Escalate" at the top, “Cultivate" in the middle, and “Accommodate" at the bottom.  "Most of us get stuck at the bottom in the accommodate area," she warns.  “Screaming fires get done but are not so important.”

Are you the type of person who goes to bed thinking, “I didn’t do enough today,” “I didn’t accomplish all the things I had on my to-do list and I feel awful about it”? Too often, this is how we end our day, and it’s how we wake up the next day. But here’s the thing, feeling bad about yourself for not being as productive as you wanted to be doesn’t serve you. And it certainly isn’t going to boost your productivity because who’s going to be more productive when they feel like they’ve been bad?  In today’s episode, I sit down with Tonya Dalton, author of The Joy of Missing Out and founder of inkWELL Press Productivity Co., a company centered around productivity tools and training, to dive further into this topic of to-do lists and priorities and how most of the things we check off our lists just leave us feeling incomplete and unhappy. This episode is brought to you by our complimentary Purpose Chasers community. Want to share your aha moments with a group of like-minded purpose chasers from all over the world? Visit iamapurposechaser.com and join NOW.   The Joy of Missing Out Takeaways So often we think life is meant to be endured, when truly it’s meant to be enjoyed. – Tonya Dalton We’re so busy chasing busy that we don’t give ourselves a chance to inhale so that we can exhale. – Tonya Dalton Give yourself permission to take back your power and choose what actually matters to you. – Patrice Washington We’re so busy people pleasing that we put ourselves at the very bottom of our own people-pleasing list. – Tonya Dalton We can’t shine our light on other people if our batteries always need recharging. – Tonya Dalton Self-care is not about spa days and pedicures; it’s about filling up your soul, not your calendar. – Tonya Dalton Quiet your soul – only then will you be able to see where God is pulling you. – Tonya Dalton When it comes to living that go-go-go lifestyle, it’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of it and think that productivity should outweigh our happiness. But that’s just not true – your happiness is more important than checking off a bunch of meaningless tasks. So I invite you to think about how you’re living each day. Are you checking off tasks that are truly important to you or are you checking off tasks and creating lists that are meaningless to your purpose?   Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions  And with that, let’s dig into Tonya’s responses to our Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions. Define Success: “Living a life that’s true to my message.” Define Wealth in 3 Words or Less: “Time with family.”  One Book that Has Redefined How You See Wealth: Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey Fill-in the Blanks … “My name is ___ and the truth about wealth is ___”: “My name is Tonya Dalton and the truth about wealth really is about how you spend your time more than anything else.”   LINKS: To advertise on the podcast: http://www.patricewashington.com/podcastads Become an Official Purpose Chaser: http://www.iamapurposechaser.com  Join Patrice’s Pod Club: http://www.patricespodclub.com  To check out ALL of our past guests + episodes: http://www.patricewashington.com/Listen  If you have questions about booking Patrice or sponsoring the podcast, email us at info@seekwisdomfindwealth.com. Tell me if this sounds familiar. You get an amazing idea for a product, course or something else you want to create and launch to the world. You start brainstorming all the amazing things … it literally comes pouring out of you. Maybe right along with this brainstorm, you start talking to friends about it...because you are literally THAT excited. Have you ever been so excited about your idea and then found out that it had already been done? Or maybe you knew that it was already done many times over, so you've spent years telling yourself, “Don't you dare create that!” or “Don't waste your time!” Heck, I've had that same idea with my signature program Fearless Launching? How many people are teaching about launching, launch strategy, or some type of launching or even something related to launching? Let's just say A LOT. If you have experience this or are experiencing it right now, today's episode is for you. You might just get you some simple tools to getting through those thoughts and creating something EVEN WHEN it's being done by many other people.
