Is the concept of TIME becoming a bit obsolete in the world of entrepreneurship? In the traditional sense, yes. And productivity expert Tanya Dalton is breaking down the barriers for how we perceive time as business owners (who obviously need to be REALLY productive)! For Tanya, time has always been of the essence. How could it not be while leading her company InkWell Press to multi-million dollar success and beyond, and seeing her products used by thousands of productive people? (You've seen her planners in stores like Target and Staples.)  Well, all that is exactly why she was quick to notice all of the ways we're actually *hurting* ourselves by not slowing down. So today she drops incredible truths like these through her most recent OxfordTalk and interviews like this one, flipping the script on how we look at time management.  In this episode of Reward, The Trust founder Ali Brown sits down with our founding member Tanya to not only break down her story of how productivity became “her lane”, but how what she saw as productive also started to shift for herself, her team, and her family.  On this episode of the #REWARDPodcast, you'll hear: Tanya's key to shifting from a scarcity mindset to abundance and collaboration (it's simpler than you think!) How true productivity lies in asking how we LIVE, not just how we work The powerful moment that told Tanya it was time to let go of her business baby and sell her company (we loved this one!) How she was able to step away from her company and actually do more for its mission as a result  Ali and Tanya's take on time as a social construct (stay with us here!) and the impact of the good ol' Industrial Revolution The REAL reward behind relinquishing “control” and saying goodbye to time “management” And, go learn more about The Trust and Tanya!  Learn more about The Trust – our modern, premier network for 7+8-figure women entrepreneurs  Follow The Trust on Instagram Follow The Trust on Linkedin  Learn more about The Intentional Advantage Podcast Follow Inkwell Press on Instagram  Connect with us on social using the hashtag #RewardPodcast and share your key takeaways from this episode!

It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

There was a time in the U.S. - not all that long ago - when all of us fell into one of very few homogeneous groups. You were either an employer or employee - there was no such thing as a “gig economy worker” or “startup entrepreneur”. Very few people were openly members of any of the categories L, G, B, T or Q. And nobody referred to themselves as “neuro-divergent.”   If you go back to your own memories of childhood, do you remember a time when you thought you didn't fit in? You probably do. Because, in reality, there is nothing objective to fit into. We learn to become what is expected of us. Or we did. Today, we have far greater freedom to become the person we truly want to be. Instead of trying to beat creativity and idiosyncrasies out of people, we see the wisdom of equipping atypical individuals with skills that will let them function, while retaining their individuality. That is Adela Baker's job. Adela is CEO of a company called Mind Coach NOLA. Mind Coach NOLA provides individual and group sessions to people Adela calls, “Turbo Thinkers.” Turbo Thinkers are folks who struggle with executive function skills and impulse management. A lot of Adela's clients are entrepreneurs and creatives. Growing up in Slidell, Gabriel Flores followed his own path. He started down the road to the million-dollar business he owns today when he was arrested - for spray painting on the walls at Slidell High. Today, Gabriel is owner of The Inkwell Press. The Inkwell Press designs and produces screen-printing and embroidery on a multitude of items, including T-shirts, professional work wear, promotional items like flags, koozies, glassware, and much more. An even greater connection to Gabriel's less than illustrious entrée into the art world is his allied company, New Orleans Paint & Design. It's acronym, NOPD, is a tip-of-the-hat to his origin story, and, even more ironically, the business itself is a mural painting company. You can see NOPD's murals all around New Orleans, including at Whole Foods, the ACE Hotel, Marjie's Grill, and in locally shot movies and TV shows. Talking with Adela and Gabriel brings to mind a two-word saying: “Be You.” Unfortunately, sayings like “Be you,” “You do you” and “Live your best life” have become social media cliches and memes. But for good reason. We keep encouraging each other with these bits of advice because being your authentic self and living the life you want to live with only a minimal amount of necessary compromise is an extraordinary challenge. Adela is devoting her professional life to giving people the tools to simply be themselves. And Gabriel is a textbook example of the kind of success a person can achieve by having the courage to simply do what makes you happy. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom. Being productive often sounds easier than it actually is. It’s hard to make progress on the important things when you’re busy balancing various priorities, checking things off the endless to-do list, and responding to team members’ urgent needs.  Today’s guest is Tonya Dalton. Tonya is a productivity expert, author, speaker and founder of inkWELL Press Productivity Co, a company centered around productivity tools and training. She released her book, The Joy of Missing Out, with Harper Collins in the fall of 2019, which has been named a top ten business book of the year by Fortune Magazine. Tonya’s messages about business management, productivity, and the pursuit of passion have impacted thousands and inspired her to launch her podcast, Productivity Paradox which has surpassed more than a million downloads. Tonya and I talk about the difference between being busy and being productive and how to re-think the idea of work-life balance. We walk through the basics of the Live Well method, how to protect your time when it feels like it’s owned by your company or your team, and much more.  Read the related blog article: How To Live A Less Busy, But More Productive, Life   Join the Modern Manager community (www.themodernmanager.co/join) to get 20% off at inkWELL Press until September 1, 2020. It’s better to do fewer, right things, than be busy with many things that don’t move the needle. There is no such thing as work-life balance. Instead, it’s a constant dance of leaning and counterbalancing. There are times when we need to spend more time, energy and focus at work and then times when we do at home, or on ourselves. The goal is not equal attention to all areas, but a healthy ebb and flow. The Live Well method has four stages: (1) Discovery - what matters to you; (2) Clarify - how do you design your life around your priorities; (3) Simplify - streamline, automate and simplify as much as possible (4) Harmony - make it manageable and embrace happiness. It’s important to think of your life holistically. You need work and home to both be running smoothly if you want to be your best self. Don’t forget about yourself. Our brains and bodies need rest, rejuvenation and investment.  The human brain has an ultradian rhythm which means it works hard for 90-120 minutes and then needs a break. It can’t work at full speed for 8 hours straight. Block time on your calendar to do your important work. This signals to colleagues that you’re not available. It’s OK to say no to a meeting or to ask for an agenda and decide if you should attend or what parts you should attend. Don’t let a 5 minute ‘quick question’ become a 30 minute conversation. If you’ve got other things to do, schedule a better time to discuss the topic or use a different mode of connection e.g. chat app or email. Put a sign on your door or on your chat availability that say you’re busy. Include what time you’ll be done so colleagues (or housemates) know when they can interrupt you again. Improve your habits. Use timers to set reminders, set routines for how you start and end your day. Share what matters to you with your team. Let them know of any time you’ve blocked for specific deep work. The more your team is aware of your goals and priorities, the more easily they can work in ways that allows you to focus. It also brings the team closer into alignment.  KEEP UP WITH TONYA Website: tonyadalton.com Facebook: tonyadalton.com/fb Book: joyofmissingout.com Instagram: @tonya.i.dalton   RESOURCES Book: How To Be An Inclusive Leader Episode 89: Growing into an Inclusive Leader with Jennifer Brown Color of Change https://colorofchange.org/ Equal Justice Initiative https://eji.org/racial-justice/ mamie@mamieks.com

This week, I was joined by my longtime friend, Founder and CEO of inkWELL Press Productivity Co., and author of “The Joy of Missing Out”, Tonya Dalton.   Tonya started her career as a kindergarten teacher, then transitioned into owning a jewelry company, and finally started her second company inkWELL Press Productivity Co., which became a seven-figure business within 18 months of its launch.   As a mother and CEO, Tonya has had to learn how best to live her most purposeful life without becoming a victim of mom guilt. In her interview, she made an important observation about how limiting beliefs always include the words “always” or “never”. For example “a good mom always packs her kids’ lunch” or “a good mom never stays late at work.” It was up to her to change what her image of an ideal mom was, and to construct her own image for what worked best for her family. Owning a successful business does not mean sacrificing time with your family.   She first came up with what she calls her “north star”, a combination of her mission, vision, and core values. With that in mind she crafted her schedule for her business and family. As Tonya said in her interview, CEO does not mean chief everything officer! It’s important to delegate when needed. It’s not about saying no, but it’s about what you say yes to.   Tonya also spoke about the choice we have over our own lives. We chose how we spend the day, but as she points out, it’s important to zoom out and look at the hours in the week, rather than focus on the limited hours of the day. Productivity isn’t about doing more, it’s about what’s important to you.   Because moms are the CEO of business’, and often, the house, Tonya wrote her book for women. Her book will help you identify your priorities and organize your life with resources and printables. It was named one of the top 10 business books of the year by Fortune magazine.   You can buy a copy of Tonya’s book “The Joy of Missing Out: Live More by Doing Less” at https://joyofmissingout.com/. In today's episode, I'm talking with Tonya Dalton of Inkwell Press about all things productivity. We think about productivity as a system, and it is. But Tonya keeps us focused on the most important aspect of creating impact: staying true to our vision and our why in a practical, efficient way. In fact, focusing our attention on our WHY takes tremendous discipline. “It’s not about what you do, it’s about why you do it and what problem are you solving.” -Tonya Tonya Dalton is a productivity expert, writer, speaker and founder of inkWELL Press Productivity Co, a company centered around productivity tools and training. She released her first book, The Joy of Missing Out, with Harper Collins in October of 2019. Our self-talk keeps us on the edge, always wondering if we're good enough, smart enough, or tough enough. Tonya Dalton would like us to know there's another way. In fact, Tonya has worked hard to rewrite her own stories, clean up her own self-talk, and embrace the joy of missing out. Tonya Dalton is the author of The Joy of Missing Out and the founder of Inkwell Press. She's also the host of the hit podcast, The Productivity Paradox. I wanted to talk with Tonya about how embracing the joy of missing out has transformed her own self-talk as an entrepreneur. We chat about the glorification of busy in today's culture, the litmus tests we subject ourselves to, how we can rewrite stories that aren't serving us, and how Tonya actively chooses what she wants to miss out on so she can embrace more of what she really wants out of life and business. Do you ever sit down at the end of a long day of work, after checking box after box off your to-do list and still think, wow, I have so many more things I should get done. This feeling of overwhelm is common for small business owners and mompreneurs alike and it’s the reason today’s guest, Tonya Dalton, was inspired to write her new book, The Joy of Missing Out.    You may remember Tonya from Episode 26 of Proof to Product, where she shared her start-up story of founding inkWELL Press and how she built systems and processes for both work and home. Since then, Tonya has been featured on Real Simple, Entrepreneur, Inc., Apartment Therapy, Lauren Conrad, and HGTV. In 2019, Tonya received the  Enterprising Woman of the Year Award and was named North Carolina's Female Entrepreneur to Watch by The Ladders. Tonya is truly a productivity expert and has made it her mission to help other women reduce and remove the overwhelm in their lives through her inkWELL Press products, liveWELL Method Course, Productivity Podcast, and book that comes out October 1st.    On today's episode, Tonya takes us behind the scenes of The Joy of Missing Out. She shares her motivations for writing the book, why she chose to weave stories in as lessons, and the power of saying yes and no. I also discuss a personal story of my own that Tonya shares in her book. If you’re looking for ways to reduce overwhelm in your life and carve out more time for the things that matter most, this one's for you!   ON TODAY’S EPISODE:  What inspired Tonya to write The Joy of Missing Out The importance of being raw and honest Where to start when you get feel caught spinning in circles  How to identify your priorities and true North Star Misconceptions about what’s urgent vs important Letting go of the idea of balance to embrace the idea of movement Advice for coping with feelings of guilt The value of free-time and white space to boosting productivity Ultradian rhythm is and why it’s important  How Tonya uses her white-space and free time The sandwich strategy and how to use it Tools, resources and bonuses being released with The Joy of Missing Out  KEY TAKE-AWAYS:   “We're overwhelmed by our tasks, overwhelmed by our own to-do list. And I wanted women to see that it is possible to live the life you want and to achieve greatness without spreading yourself so thin, without making yourself do everything.” - Tonya Dalton  “It's not always easy to say no, to live with intention, or to let go of the guilt that we feel making these choices. And I think was really important to just be raw and honest about that.”  - Tonya Dalton  “The best teachers are those that have been through difficult times and are open to sharing both how they got through it as well as the messy parts of dealing with it.” - Katie Hunt “None of us get through life with all successes, without any failures. It's the things that we stumble on, the things that we fail at, those are the things that make us resilient.” - Tonya Dalton “Instead of trying to go the 50 different steps, why not choose to do five? Why not do less and focus in on what's important.” - Tonya Dalton “If everything is perfectly equal and even, there's no movement. You have to have some imbalance in order to move forward.” - Tonya Dalton “I think that's the problem is when we are trying to do everything, we end up doing nothing.” - Tonya Dalton “The biggest mistake some people make is thinking periods of rest are a reward for great work, but periods of rest are actually a requirement for great work to happen. We need some white space in our lives, some breathing room where we can actually innovate and be creative.” - Tonya Dalton “Often the grace we give to others far exceeds the grace we give ourselves.” - Tonya Dalton “I am so guilty of putting out the fires and letting that pull focus, because it's right in front, whether it's my kids or my team or whatever it is. But using the priority list over the to-do list recently has shifted my mindset around that.” - Katie Hunt LINKS Website: https://inkwellpress.com/ Facebook: http://facebook.com/tonyaidalton Instagram: https://instagram.com/tonya_i_dalton Twitter: https://twitter.com/tonya_i_dalton Book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1400214335   SUBSCRIBE To subscribe on iOS, go to the iTunes page and subscribe to Proof to Product. I remember I was still in my corporate job, I was miserable and I was so inspired to hear how this mom of two decided to start a business. I can remember thinking how it seemed impossible.  How would she even know how to start, how to do all the things to make it happen. That was my first mistake back then and continues to rear its head at times......getting stuck in the HOW. When we get stuck in the how, we don't actually move forward. We don't take action because the "HOW" seems so overwhelming. We end up taking no action and then that dream or idea floats off into the could have, would have, should have land of our lives. You will hear from Tonya how she didn't let the how stop her, she just took action after action to make it happen. You will also learn the importance of allowing yourself to pivot if you are not aligned to a previous choice. Tonya is also coming out with a book in the Fall - and you can pre-order it here! Tonya Dalton is the Founder & CEO of Inkwell Press, a productivity company focused on helping women figure out what is important. She knows first-hand how overwhelming it can be to feel like you have a million things to do each day. As a modern mother, there are multiple demands on our time, and there is so much pressure to do "#allthethings and do them well" according to Tonya.    Tonya's definition of productivity is not getting more done, rather, its focusing our attention on whats more important. What is even more unique was that Tonya started her business as a mother of two because she wanted to create a financial pathway for her family. She started off as a teacher, and then became a stay-at-home mother. After starting what she thought was going to be a small side-business, she grew Inkwell Press rapidly and within a year, her husband was able to quit his big marketing job to join her.    Dive into the podcast to learn more about how Tonya mapped out a path to financial freedom for her family. Goal setting, planning, and creating habits is not just a once a year activity. While we tend to focus on it at the start of a new year, it’s important to continue the process throughout the year. In this episode, I’m sharing some practical tools and tips that you can use to get all your dreams, ideas, and plans off the page and into your life, as well as tools to keep up with the habits you are developing. Remember that these are tools that have worked for me, but what’s important is what will work for you.  Don’t feel like you have to use all the tools I share here. You might decide to do something totally different so this episode may simply be a starting point to help you. My five favorite goal-setting and planning tools: 1. POWERSHEETS This is an intentional goal planner which helps you to do a lot of the things we’ve been talking about on our podcast: reflecting on the past, dreaming about the future, and then creating your goals. 2. TRELLO: Trello is a free online project management tool, and you can also use it as an app on your phone. There are other similar tools out there, such as Asana and Basecamp. I’ve tried and used some of these, but Trello has been the one I’ve fallen in love with. Get my free Trello Training by clicking here. 3. PEN & PAPER Okay, this might seem silly, but yes, pen and paper are still one of my favorite tools for goals, planning. I use pen and paper to brain dump, get my ideas out, do some mind mapping, and draw, connect, map out a plan on paper and then translate into Trello. 4. PHYSICAL PLANNERS In the past, I’ve used a gorgeous planner from InkWell Press. This year, I’m using the 2019 Essential Daily Planner from Amazon because it has the daily, monthly and weekly views. so that I still have space for what I’m doing each day. Another paper option is bullet journaling. Some people use a basic blank notebook and create their own planners or calendars. This is called bullet journaling, and it can work really well for some people! 5. GOOGLE CALENDAR When it comes to knowing what appointments I have and how my time is planned for the week, I am a die hard fan of Google Calendar.   My favorite tools for implementing habits: Tending List from PowerSheets Habit Tracker - make your own in bullet journal or use a calendar and simply mark off each day that you do the habit Built-in habit trackers- YouVersion Bible app will help you keep track of when you reach your bible - you can see how many days in a row you’ve done Fitness apps - many will help you track your exercise Fitbit - lets me know when I’ve hit my steps, and I can see how many days I’ve done so Habit Tracker from James Clear - if you buy Atomic Habits, you can get access to a free PDF habit tracker. P.S. He also has a journal for habit tracking!   For the full show notes for this episode, visit estherlittlefield.com/episode33. Intentionality.  That is the theme of today’s conversation with the amazing Tonya Dalton, founder of Inkwell Press, a company that provides products and services for women who want to be more productive and purposeful with the things they value in life.  She offers customized planners, journals, notepads and educational courses that can help you spend your time in the most important places in your life!   After years of growing a “successful” business, she realized she wasn’t really fulfilled by it the way she really wanted to be.  So, she did something that takes a lot of courage - she spent the time to get really clear about who she is, what she really wanted to do, how she wanted to make an impact in the world and created a business that reflected all that.  She completely stopped her business - a company that was paying the bills for her household - and turned all her attention onto growing her new company, Inkwell Press.     The intentionality - and therefore the actions she took to launch that business - paid off.  She launched her planners to the world in 2014 and within 18 months had grown it to a 7 figure business that was run by just 3 employees - herself,  her husband and one other employee.   And she hasn’t looked back since!     During this conversations, Tonya delves into…   How to get intentional with your business, your products and your marketing...and how that can create massive results! How she stays connected to what she calls her “north star” and why that bleeds into everything she does. The difference between a loyal customer and a returning customer (and her secret sauce for creating more loyal customers)! The practical breakdown of how she organizes her days, weeks, months and years so she can constantly be purposeful in how she’s showing up to her business and life!   Tonya is the embodiment of everything I believe in business...that when you approach your business from the inside out, starting with YOUR VALUES, then results can happen FAST!     You can find out more about Tonya and her amazing productivity planners and courses here → https://inkwellpress.com/   And check out her podcast too! Everybody's favorite 4-letter word today is "busy." But ask yourself: What's really important? Are you making time for it? Tonya Dalton's company InkWELL Press empowers you through productivity to live your best life. Tonya will be our guide in learning how to do more with less at work and at home. And, most importantly: Forget "busy" + get ready for space to do what you truly love. SHOW NOTES: Get the first chapters of John's #1 National Bestselling book ON FIRE for free here. Listen to Tonya interviewed John on her Productivity Paradox Podcast here. Productivity is not "doing more" it's "doing what's important." We're so busy we feel like discovery is a luxury. But discovering what our passions are + what brings us joy is important. Our lives should be at the center; systems should work around them. Discover what is important + create a productivity system that works for you. Check out InkWELL Press courses, trainings and podcasts to help facilitate the best life you could possibly have, here. We think in order to grow we have to add, but often if we cut, it allows us space to create what is truly amazing and important. We often confuse urgent with important. What's important? Things tied to vision, mission, goals; things essential to you. We cram our days so full! We don't realize we're choosing that life for ourselves. You choose how to fill your day. Stop and ask: Is this what I want to do? How I want to spend my time? Relationships are built on conversations. Make time for them. It feels unschedule-able, but in our heart it's most important. Life ebbs and flows. There will be times when happiness is a really hard choice to make. Remember, lightness always comes after the dark. Take a good look at your life + where you spend your time. Identify where you spend time mindlessly (likely in between activities). Recoup that time to end your day happier. If you enjoyed our discussion about "productivity" check out ep. #5 with Rory Vaden to explore "discipline." TONYA DALTON'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Jane Eyre. I read it every year. It brings me back to my English studies roots and love of writing. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? I see it in my daughter! That feeling of self confidence. You just don't care what anyone else thinks. I hope to foster that into her even in adulthood. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? I love this! It boils down to priorities and that is what I talk about all the time. I have some pictures from my wedding and when my kids were born. Those are really important to me. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? The conversations my husband and I have keep getting better and better (we've been together for 20 years). If I could spend the whole day with one person, I would pick him. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Be yourself. Be true to who you are and never lose sight of it. Hold fast to what is important to you, morals, values, ethics. I couldn't do a project that I wasn't 100% proud of. I love going to bed at night feeling proud of what I do. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? It gets better. You think in your 20s that life is great, and it just keeps getting better and better! Because the longer you are with yourself, the better you get to know yourself and the more time you take to really delve into who you are, the more in love you can fall. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? She taught people to live with priority all while keeping her own at the center. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe, rate & review on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. See you here next Thursday! This week on the show, I'm totally nerding out on all things productivity with Tonya Dalton, Founder of Inkwell Press! (The CLARITY portion begins around 32 mins!)Especially with the recent launch of my new free 15 minute planner method, it's no secret that I'm a huge fan of conversations around productivity -- in particular, with a heavy dose of intention. After all, checklists and to do lists are just tools. It's what we do with these tools, and why we're doing it in the first place, that makes it all come together. By all measures of "success", Tonya had "made it" with her first business. And yet, she found herself miserable. Can you even imagine that? How do you figure out what to do next when all you know is that something is missing? In this episode, you'll hear: The story of Tonya's first business, which she built from her dining room table with zero business experience What happened when Tonya realized it was time for something new... but she had no idea why, or what to work on next Why imbalance is actually a critical piece of finding success (and why we need to stop looking for "balance" all the time) What it actually means when you feel overwhelmed (and how to fix it) A real, tactical process for sitting down and discovering what you truly want to do next

What are the things in life that give you fulfillment? Passion? Could you meld this in to a business or a product? Where do you begin to connect these dots? For Tonya Dalton, she found that her passions in life were teaching, organizing, and empowering business owners and other women. And so, she created inkWELL Press, a company centered around productivity, and designed to help and educate women prioritize, and set up an organizational flow and system that works the best for their lives. inkWELL Press does so with products such as weekly planners, meal planners, organizational notepads, and other items. They even have videos on how to streamline customer's organizational process on their website. Tonya found that the majority of the time, the most organized people aren't actually productive, and use organization as a procrastination technique. With inkWELL Press, she hoped women and female business owners could reach productivity first, and have organization follow naturally. However, finding her passions didn't come easily. It took hours of Brain Dump and Mind Mapping exercises to narrow down the things that fulfilled her. She found that her greatest fulfillments came from her time as a former teacher and investment banker, and through her organizational exercises, she figured out how to link them to create a business and product, and create a mission statement for her brand. Once she was able to develop an overall message and direction for her brand, she created an entire roadmap of how she was going to get her business off the ground. She set up her business development plan in mini milestones, with each end goal representing hurdles that she would have to overcome,  and detailed how she would solve them, with a timeline for when they needed to be accomplished. One of her biggest milestones was how to budget her family's finances, and survive six months without an income as her and her husband shut down their jewelry business, and developed inkWELL Press. But because they knew that they were chasing her big dream and ultimate purpose, they found saying no to the little splurges in life were challenging, but easy when they took in the big picture. After whittling down her milestones, they developed a marketing and advertising strategy on Facebook and with lead magnets to find their target consumer and generate excitement around their brand. By giving out free downloads of the it productivity and organizational videos and programs in exchange for emails, as well as teasers on the product, they launched with 500 orders! Pop a squat and learn more about what made Tonya want to be an entrepreneur and her and her husband's journey in going into business for themselves! In this episode you will... Know how starting a business can help you gain control of your life and priorities Find out when and how to walk away from a business endeavor that you are no longer passionate about Figure out your action plan in getting your business off the ground Learn how to find your business's mission statement Understand how to budget your income while starting your business Begin to prioritize your hurdles and solve them one at a time INSIGHTS "When you're figuring out your end, that's where you start...because when I decided what my personal mission statement was, I built on that to create the mission behind Inkwell Press...I already knew it needed to be tied to something that made me feel fulfilled and that I would be passionate about" -Tonya Dalton "Every time you say 'yes' you're saying 'no' to something else...My 'yes' was starting this business, so my no's were so much were so much easier." -Tonya Dalton "It's not about being organized, it's about having a productive life. Productivity, to me, is not about doing more things faster, it's about having a life that you love and really focusing in on your priorities and getting those things done." -Tonya Dalton "Failing is the best way to learn...When everything is sunshine and lollipops you're not really growing... It's those things that were really kind of painful...but looking back at have made the biggest difference." -Tonya Dalton

The Boss Mom Podcast - Business Strategy - Work / Life Balance - -Digital Marketing - Content Strategy

Ok ladies, you are in for a real treat because this conversation I had with Tonya Dalton, the Founder and CEO of inkWELL Press, was seriously amazing. Tonya started her first business as a SAHM in 2009 and by 2011, her husband was able to leave corporate America to work alongside her. Late in 2014 she decided to follow her true passion - inkWELL Press which has grown at a rapid pace thanks to their commitment to quality and fiercely loyal fans.  I knew pretty much instantaneously that Tonya was my soul sister. The way she thinks is so in line with the way I think and we had an absolute blast, not just talking about planners and building businesses, but ultimately about productivity. We talked about how to be effective and efficient, about changing things when you’re not happy, and so many other things that so many of us boss moms go through. She is an absolute joy and treasure, I know you’re going to fall madly in love with her (because how couldn’t you?!) So I’m not going to deprive you of her awesomeness any further. Lets hop in and hang out with Tonya. Listen + subscribe on iTunes // Stitcher       Tonya's Boss Mom Journey Several years ago Tonya was one of those moms that thought she would just start a little side business that would be fun for her. Her husband was working in marketing at large Fortune 500 companies, traveling the world and gone for 3-4 weeks at a time.  One night while he was traveling and they were talking on the phone Tonya mentioned a new phrase their young daughter had said that day, and her husband got really quiet then said, “I’m missing everything.” This broke Tonya's heart, and in that moment her life changed. She decided she was going to turn her little side business into a full-time gig and make it so that she and her husband could be home working on that business together. She sat down, got out a notebook and wrote down everything she could think of to build her business and boost her productivity, since she was obviously still a mom with 2 kids to raise with a husband who traveled a lot. Tonya mapped out a business plan and got to work! Within a year her husband quit his corporate job and came to work with her. The business had grown enough to sustain their life, pay the bills and they loved working together.....and as they worked alongside each other, the business grew even more. Like so many before her though, she got to a point a few years in where she realized she was losing her enthusiasm for what she was doing because that little side business wasn't born out of her passions - it was always just intended to be something fun. After sharing her heart with her husband from a place of honesty and transparency, he was totally on board with sitting down and coming up with an alternative plan. They decided to close down that first business, even though it was successful, so Tonya could really follow her passion and purpose. What she learned was that she was really passionate about three things: teaching, organization and productivity, and empowering women. She had to figure out what to create that would pull together all 3 of those passions, and from that Inkwell Press was born. After closing that first business they took a big risk to build their new business, living with no income for 7 months, and today she says it was all worth it. Now she gets to work with her husband on a business they absolutely love and wake up every day fulfilled in walking out her purpose. The Power of Planning One of the biggest things Tonya says helped her build her business was having an organized mind and doing the planning....figuring out her "roadmap" if you will. She shared a great analogy about how you can get into the car and have the idea that you're going to drive across the country, but if you don't have a map or GPS you don't ultimately know where you'll end up! So Tonya focused intently on creating a map for herself, that way as she continued to move forward she knew what the next steps were going to be and she could anticipate things. When you know where you're going and have a map for how to get there, even when you need to make inevitable adjustments (hello detours and construction work!) you are still able to veer back onto the right path because you know your end destination. The other thing that has really helped her as she has built her business is being able to hone in on how to best spend her time. “Productivity isn’t about getting more things done in a day, it’s about focusing in on the things you really want to focus in on, the things that are important to you, and finding these pockets of time by getting rid of the other stuff.” (11:33) True productivity is about focusing on that one thing that really matters that will move the needle forward the most for you in the direction of your goals. On Busy, Hustle and Balance At this point in the conversation we start talking a little bit of trash about some common jargon many people use today, and explore how using these words can hold us back. The first word up: busy. Tonya says she is not a fan and tries not to use the word because at the end of the day, busy doesn't always mean productive or happy. It just means busy. One of her big platforms is to stop the glorification of busy, and trade it in for productivity. She says busy just means you’re scattering yourself in all different directions. Productive means you’re going in the direction that you want to go in and doing the right things to get there. Think how often you ask people how they are and they reply “busy.” Busy isn’t a state of being, it’s a verb. It’s filling up your time with a lot of things. Then we shifted into discussing the world "hustle" which Tonya says segues right into busy because it's about always moving and always doing. “It’s okay to stop moving and have white space our lives because the white space is where we grow and that’s really where we can dedicate the time to where we need to go.” (14:22) Lastly (and we SO have the same belief about this) Tonya thinks the idea of balance in life and work is total bogus. She says there are 3 areas that make up our life: personal, home and work, and it's all about finding harmony in these areas. Tonya believes that using the idea of "balance" makes it sound like each area needs to be even - which isn’t feasible, realistic or healthy! To really move towards a big goal in any direction there has to be imbalance. You have to spend more time on something if you’re really wanting it to grow. So the key is to find how you can get all 3 areas of your life to work together to create harmony, which will add to your happiness with life. The Challenge of Decision-Making A really common struggle today is that people want to do all the things, really well, and right now. When we don't have a clear focus, we won't have a clear understanding of what we need to say yes to or what we need to say no to. All of this leads to us to being indecisive, or making poor choices when we do finally decide. “Everyone thinks you need to add in order to grow, and it’s really the opposite. You need to cut in order to grow.” (19:30) She suggests figuring out the one thing you want to focus on, your key product or offering, and building around that once you feel like it’s gotten established. That, she says, is how growth happens. From a marketing perspective, focusing in this way will also allow you to know exactly what you’re going to tell people about. And your focused message can be tailored and adjusted so it's applicable depending on your audience. If your products and offerings are all based off your core mission, it really allows you to grow at a steady pace. Tonya says that all of her products at inkWELL Press go through a rigorous questioning process to make sure it aligns with their overarching mission. If it doesn’t fulfill their mission, they don’t offer it (even if people are asking for it!) Growing Pains & Season of Change When Tonya first started inkWELL Press organization was the thing she thought was her cornerstone and what she wanted to focus in on. Eventually she started to realize as she was growing and moving forward that her focus really needed to be about productivity. She believes that if you’re really organized it won't necessarily translate into productivity because a lot of people use organization as a way to procrastinate. “If you’re productive, organization naturally follows.” (22:58) So she changed her focus from organization to productivity and agrees with my philosophy that you find clarity by doing. You find it as you work, if you're open to seeing it and grabbing hold of it. It’s really about knowing where you want to go and where you want to spend your time, in the ways that matter most to you. Productivity is very personal and needs to be customized and tailored to you, Tonya says. It requires clarity, cutting through the clutter and focusing on the things that are important to you. We also discuss the importance of having a business plan that can act as your decision-support to help you figure out your purpose, gift, the future you want to create, the environment you want to live in, what will you say yes and no to, etc. People often avoid answering these questions because it feels uncomfortable, but Tonya is a believer in growth coming from outside our comfort zones. "The first step of any process, whether it’s developing a business plan or doing your goal setting is reflection.”  (25:49) And she says reflection isn't always easy - it can be tough work! You have to be willing to peel back the layers, get honest and vulnerable - with yourself and others. It might feel like there are parts of you that you don’t want to explore or talk about, but those are the parts that you’re really going to grow from and that make you beautiful in who you’ve become. You all know I love brainstorming, and often say "If brainstorming isn't uncomfortable then you’re just making a list.” (26:38) But do you just want to just make a list or do you want to come up with actual answers, content, things, ideas that are really going to make a difference? “Until you get lost, you can’t explore.” (27:27) Making inkWELL Press Great Over the years inkWELL Press has experienced a ton of growth and Tonya is sharing some behind the scenes insights into how she approaches her business. "I really believe there can be a happy marriage between form and function, but I do believe that function comes first.” (35:52) Tonya starts every new project by sketching out the layout and elements she thinks are important. She intentionally puts things in her planners that she feels are vital for productivity (goal setting, habit trackers, focus points, etc. She also works completely in tandem with her husband on every single page! She says the most important thing is that each of their products is created to be functional and customizable so it will work for you. By approaching their creation process with the end in mind - helping people get organized and be productive, they've been able to give people what they need and want and grow a thriving business with integrity. To Tonya it's all about making her customers feel successful at the end of the day....and making her products pretty is a fun bonus. She wants every product she creates to be something people will be excited to pull out every day so it becomes a ritual or habit. She believes if you start doing your planning on a regular basis you will see a difference in your life!
