Noi ci risentiamo venerdì, sempre qua, su Layer 3.
Russia says Ukraine attacked Bryansk region with US missiles, after restrictions on them were lifted. Also, long jail terms for pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong, and 40 years of searching for extraterrestrial life.
On Sunday, President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range weaponry — called Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS — to strike within Russian territory. Then on Tuesday morning, Ukraine used the ATACMS for the first time, reportedly striking a Russian arsenal in the Bryansk region 70 miles from the Ukrainian border. Additionally, the Pentagon confirmed that the White House intends to issue $7.1 billion in military aid to Ukraine through Presidential Drawdown Authority before the end of Biden's term in January. The news comes as the Russia-Ukraine war hit its 1,000th day on Tuesday. //The Wire// 2300Z November 19, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: UKRAINE CONDUCTS MISSILE STRIKES IN BRYANSK. FARMER PROTEST BEGINS IN LONDON. INVESTIGATION INTO BALTIC SEA CABLE INCIDENT CONTINUES AMID TENSIONS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Europe: Overnight, Ukraine conducted long-range attacks against Russia with American-made munitions. Initial reports indicate 6x ATACMS missiles were launched at targets within the Russian region of Bryansk. AC: As with all data surrounding the Ukrainian war, battle damage is challenging to assess. Russian sources claim their S-400 systems shot 5x of the missiles down, however the sourcing of this data is obviously suspect at best. However, it may be a moot point now, as the world awaits Russia's response. In the Baltic, the investigation into the recent cable cuttings continues, with very few details remaining conclusive. The Telia cable connecting Lithuania and Sweden was cut at around 0800Z Sunday morning. The next day, the C-LION1 cable connecting Finland and Germany was cut at around 0200Z Monday morning. The companies who own the cables have also stated that they could remain offline for several more days as repairs get underway.United Kingdom: This morning the farmer protest in London began, with tens of thousands of participants taking to the streets of London to protest the current crackdown on farming. Specifically, farmers have expressed dissent regarding a series of new inflammatory tax policies, tax breaks for foreign goods which undercut British products, a 20% inheritance tax that is perceived as intended to break up family farms, and the government authorizing misleading food labels that obscure nation of origin.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: As more scrutiny is placed on the cable-cutting incidents in the Baltic, more details paint an interesting picture.Regarding who the culprit of these cable incidents may be, most theories of what caused the incident center around two main scenarios: either a Chinese cargo vessel intentionally dragging anchor at a critical moment, or Russian clandestine activities. The United States, also technically having the capability to tap and/or cut undersea cables naturally remains a suspect due to this military capability. Unlike the Nord Stream pipeline crisis of 2022, the United States likely has less motivation to attack these specific communications cables, though the potential for this to be a false-flag operation (as Russia has insinuated) does remain a detail worthy of some level of consideration. However, with almost no definitive proof to lean on, if the investigation reveals this incident was a deliberate act, the current geopolitical environment strongly suggests this was probably an act of sabotage conducted by Russia (or China, in partnership with Russia) as a means of retaliation for developing events in Ukraine. The technical means of the cables themselves also provide more details than at first glance. Both cables, while largely running perpendicular routes along the sea floor, do intersect at one point. Statements from the companies who own the cables indicate that both were cut very close to each other, at this intersection point. However, the timing remains suspect. If the companies are not mistaken, and their data is accurate, these cables were cut within a few meters of each other…but almost a full day apart. This discrepancy will need to be cleared up during the investigation; it would have been far less suspicious if both had been cut at the same time at a rather unlucky point, as a dragging anchor could be the most likely slightly-less-nefarious culprit. This exact scenario occurred last year as a Chinese ship damaged several Baltic Sea cables in this manner back in October, 2023. If the investigation reveals that the cables were indeed damaged at the same time and in the same place, the anchor-dragging theory becomes t

Ukraine has fired its first set of US-supplied long range missile at a target inside Russian territory, just a day after the US granted permission for their use. Russia's defence ministry says five missiles were shot down and another was damaged, with its fragments causing a fire at a military facility in the Bryansk region. Russia security expert Dmitry Gorenburg says he's not expecting a massive response from Russia. He told Ryan Bridge they will play the waiting game. Gorenburg says they're waiting for Donald Trump to take over from Joe Biden to get more concessions. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Many European countries are accusing Russia of sabotage after the cutting of two communication cables under the Baltic Sea. One of the cables links Finland and Germany, while the other connects Sweden to Lithuania. It comes as Ukraine's fired its first set of US-made long range missiles into Russia. While Russia shot down five of them, the shrapnel from a sixth caused a fire at a military facility in the Bryansk region. Europe correspondent Gavin Grey told Ryan Bridge other moves inside Russia are increasing concern in Europe. He says Russia has changed its rules around when it can use a nuclear weapon. 2024-09-01 | We are enabling a lottery of death to take place in Ukraine, daily, and it's both stupid and immoral. Our timidity must stop, otherwise Russian aggression will only escalate. ---------- Ukraine has conducted the largest drone assault on Russian infrastructure of the war so far. Fires are reported at two power plants and oil refinery in Moscow region, with 158 Ukrainian drones targeting multiple regions, including Moscow, Tver, Voronezh, Tula, Kaluga, Bryansk, Belgorod, Lipetsk, and Kursk, according to officials and residents. The attacks follow Russia's concerted attempts to degrade and destroy energy infrastructure in Ukraine, to make cities unliveable and create misery for its citizens. The scale of the strike suggests a significant advancement in Ukraine's drone capabilities. 158 was the number of drones reported by the Russian Ministry of Defence, so the true number of drones may be even higher. It is an enduring frustration when multiple media outlets begin their stories with quotes from Russian officials, who invariably lie. ---------- Sources and recommended reading: https://kyivindependent.com/russia-claims-dozens-of-ukrainian-drones-targeted-moscow-other-regions/ https://kyivindependent.com/russian-forces-wiping-off-kursk-oblasts-sudzha-ukrainian-commander-says/ https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/09/01/russian-energy-sites-targeted-in-mass-overnight-drone-attack-a86217 https://www.kyivpost.com/post/38278 https://novayagazeta.eu/articles/2024/09/01/kyiv-targets-15-regions-in-massive-overnight-drone-strikes-on-russian-energy-infrastructure-en-news https://kyivindependent.com/russia-attacks-kharkiv-injuring-at-least-28-including-medic/ ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. 2024-08-30 | Ukraine's offensive in the Kursk region seems to have triggered a meltdown among Russia's propagandists and the talking heads on state TV. Despite the usual exhortations to violence, and denigrations of Ukraine, their ire this week seems to have turned on their own leaders, in the wake of Ukraine's success in grabbing and holding Russian territory in Kursk Oblast and now Belgorod and Bryansk. ---------- Phrases which are only usually heard by the most ‘extreme' liberal opposition commentators such as Michael Naki, are being screamed at viewers of the main Russian state TV networks. And some of the stuff they are saying is wild. The kind of stuff that usually causes bankers to fall out of windows in Moscow, or their private jets to experience mechanical trouble, as Prigozhin discovered. They are saying that the SVO (Special Military Operation) has run out of strength, that Russian victory is not guaranteed at all and most shocking of all, that Russia's military and civil leaders have lost control of everything, and the territories lost by Russia to Ukraine may not be returning to the motherland anytime soon. Some have even expressed grudging praise for Ukraine's military prowess. Now, before we dive into the detail, I must emphasize what a seismic shock this has been for the propagandists, and we must assume, by extension, the Russian leadership. It's a mark of how seriously Putin takes the incursions, that he has tried to avoid all mention of them. At the same time, he has taken the militarily catastrophic decision to appoint the FSB to lead the counter operation. In this episode, I'll share some speeches by the panicking propagandists, which are indicative of the chaos, and their extraordinary statements. We must note of course that they are not critical of the idea of the war and would rapidly embrace any minor victory. No, they are critical of the leaders precisely because the war is not being prosecuted in a brutal enough manner or showing success. ---------- Sources and recommended reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrI3tcxswpo https://www.youtube.com/@UCoAw0n5OyITkmejSCMfmnWg ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment.

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Dec. 7 at 7:30 a.m. CT: Chris Christie is doubling down on his criticism that his fellow Republican presidential candidates are too timid to take on Donald Trump and his legal troubles. The former New Jersey governor said after Wednesday's debate that the other three candidates on stage in Tuscaloosa were “pretending we're the only four candidates in the race.” Christie noted that Nikki Haley remained silent through an extended discussion of Trump's fitness for office. Christie said if Haley, Ron DeSantis and others are afraid to take on Trump, they aren't up to being head of state and sitting across the table from other world leaders. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Three people are dead and a fourth in critical but stable condition after a gunman opened fire at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas before police killed him in a shootout. Wednesday's attack had terrified students and professors cowering in classrooms. A law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation tells The Associated Press that the shooter was a professor who'd unsuccessfully sought a job at the school. The campus is only a couple of miles from the Las Vegas Strip, where the worst mass shooting in U.S. history took place in October 2017. Police say lessons learned from that tragedy helped them confront Wednesday's attack. MOSCOW (AP) — State news agencies and authorities in Russia say a girl shot several classmates before killing herself at a school in the city of Bryansk. Initial reports said one person besides the shooter was killed and five people were wounded in Thursday's gunfire. Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reports that one of the people injured is in serious condition. Russia's Investigative Committee says the girl brought a pump-action shotgun to school that she used to fire at her classmates. Russia's Interior Ministry said it was looking into a motive for the shooting, which is among several school shootings in the country in recent years. The Israeli military hit Rafah in southern Gaza overnight, residents say, as United Nations officials warn there are no safe places left in the besieged territory. The center of Gaza's second-largest city, Khan Younis, has also seen fighting amid Israel's widening air and ground offensive in the southern part of the territory that has displaced tens of thousands more Palestinians and worsened dire humanitarian conditions. On Dec. 7, 1941, the Empire of Japan launched an air raid on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii as well as targets in Malaya, Hong Kong, Guam, the Philippines and Wake Island; the United States declared war against Japan the next day. Next year's Belmont Stakes will take place at Saratoga Race Course. New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced the move Wednesday. The final leg of horse racing's Triple Crown June 8 will be shortened to 1 1/4 miles and the purse increased from $1.5 million to $2 million. The change of location for at least 2024 is because of a massive renovation of Belmont Park. It'll be the first time the race is held at Saratoga. The Belmont construction project is also expected to keep the race in Saratoga in 2025. The EV trend in the US at the end of 2023 is a little tough to tease out. Overall sales hit a record, but they're also falling short of expectations amid the industry's push to transition away from combustion engines and quickly towards EVs. EV inventory is building on dealer lots, and many EV models are taking longer to sell than gas counterparts. Some automakers are discounting their EVs to get them to move. Ford decreased Mach-E production in recent months. This story addresses the many EV market dynamics consumers are seeing. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two months ago, Kevin McCarthy was booted as House speaker. Now, the Republican congressman from California says he's resigning and will leave Congress by year's end. His announcement caps a stunning end of his House career for the onetime deli counter owner from Bakersfield, California. McCarthy has risen through state and national politics to become second in line to the presidency as speaker, until hard-right conservatives engineered his removal in October. McCarthy made his announcement in The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday and wrote that he'll “serve America in new ways.” McCarthy had brought Republicans into the majority but found it was much more difficult to lead the GOP's factions. WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military has announced it is grounding all of its Osprey V-22 helicopters, one week after eight Air Force Special Operations Command service members died in a crash off the coast of Japan. The Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps took the extraordinary step of grounding hundreds of aircraft after a preliminary investigation of last week's crash indicated that a materiel failure — that something went wrong with the aircraft — and not a mistake by the crew led to the deaths. The crash raised new questions about the safety of the Osprey, which has been involved in multiple fatal accidents over its relatively short time in service. Japan grounded its fleet of 14 Ospreys after the crash. RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada grand jury has indicted six Republicans who submitted certificates to Congress falsely declaring Donald Trump the winner of the 2020 presidential election, making the Western swing state the third to seek charges against so-called “fake electors.” Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford began investigating the fake electors last month. The announcement represents a shift for Ford, who previously was quiet on whether he would investigate the fake electors before saying that state law did not directly address whether he could pursue charges. Fake electors were also charged in Michigan and Georgia, while 10 Republicans who posed as electors in Wisconsin settled a civil lawsuit Wednesday. HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — U.S. Coast Guard officials are promising reforms after an internal review found a “permissive environment” for sexual assault and harassment in the service. The report comes months after the Coast Guard apologized for failing to adequately handle cases of sexual assault and harassment at the service's academy in Connecticut. The review was ordered by Admiral Linda Fagan, commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard. It recommends a range of reforms, including an end to an environment in which inappropriate jokes and comments were tolerated. It promised a greater focus on preventing inappropriate behavior at the earliest stages. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department says four Russian men accused of torturing an American during the invasion of Ukraine have been charged with war crimes in a first-of-its-kind case. It's the first prosecution against members of the Russian armed forces in connection with atrocities during Moscow's war against Ukraine. And it's the first time the Justice Department has brought charges under a nearly 30-year-old statute that makes it a crime to subject an American to torture or inhumane treatment during a war. The charges are largely symbolic for now, given the unlikely prospects of the department bringing into custody any of the four defendants, who are fugitives. The Yankees acquire Juan Soto in a blockbuster deal, Joel Embiid scores 50 while the Mavericks win by 50, Marquette wins a Top 20 matchup with Texas, and the Panthers outshine the Stars on ice. Some of the words tied to this year's hottest topics were also among the most mangled when it came to saying them aloud. This year's lists of the most mispronounced words in the U.S. and Britain were released Thursday by Babbel. The online language learning company commissions The Closed Captioning Group in the U.S. and the British Institute of Verbatim Reports in the U.K. to identify the top words that news anchors, politicians and other public figures have struggled with. Pronunciations that stumped included the first name of the Irish actor starring in “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy. The experts at Babbel his name is pronounced KI-lee-uhn. Another name making was the singer SZA, which they say is pronounced SIZ-uh. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Norman Lear has died. The producer who made TV topical in the 1970s with the sitcom “All in the Family,” died Tuesday night at the age of 101 years old. “All in the Family" starred Carroll O'Connor as diehard conservative Archie Bunker, who clashed with his liberal son-in-law over racism, feminism and the Vietnam War. It was one of a string of TV hits for Lear and then-partner Bud Yorkin that also included “Maude” and “The Jeffersons.” Lear's series reflected his political beliefs, which he put into action by founding the nonprofit liberal advocacy group People for the American Way. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. Droni ucraini in azione in territorio russo a Bryansk, Mosca, Tambov e Oryol.
Iscriviti e segui "Notizie dall'Ucraina": YouTube Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts Amazon Podcast Audible adnkronos.com
Drones are again targeting Russia, with one shot down near Moscow and three more intercepted in the Bryansk region bordering Ukraine, Russian officials say. It comes just one day after Russia faced its biggest drone assault since the war began. Drones are becoming gamechangers in this fight, and some experts say they're transforming the nature of war itself. Military officials say Ukraine is losing more than 40 drones a day, and ordinary citizens are being recruited to make up the shortfall for the frontlines, as Christiane saw at a drone training center in Ukraine. For more on how drone technology is re-shaping the battlefield, Christiane is joined by James Rogers, adviser on drones to NATO and the UK, and General Sir Richard Shirreff, former NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander for Europe. Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Peter: It's grit—grit and values. Grit comes from values. Grit comes from having an aim, a mission.Peter Rostovsky's fintech startup, Raiseway, grew out of his personal experience helping a friend raise money for his startup. Exploring the possibility of investment crowdfunding, he was flummoxed by the sheer number of portals to choose from. At the time, there were over 40, a count that has now topped 70.“That kind of started this very long exploration into the execution problem with investment crowdfunding for founders of startups and small businesses,” he says, having learned that crowdfunding can be difficult.Last year, Peter asked me to serve as an advisor to Raiseway, and I was honored to accept. He is an advisor to The Super Crowd, Inc., a public benefit corporation.Raiseway is potentially game-changing because the vast majority of businesses in the country that can benefit from crowdfunding are small and can't afford expensive consultants but can afford to use an app that will guide them through and, using AI, help them execute their crowdfunding campaigns.Peter has two critical tips for folks looking to crowdfund:* Assess your community. Before you launch, assess your community to determine how large, accessible and warm it is. * Don't bet on “if you build it, they will come.” To get people to invest, you need to drive people to the investment opportunity thoughtfully and strategically. They won't find it on their own.In building Raiseway, Peter leverages his superpower: grit.AI Podcast Summary* Devin Thorpe interviews Peter Rostovsky, the founder and CEO of Raiseway, a crowdfunding app for entrepreneurs.* Raiseway is designed to streamline the crowdfunding process and help entrepreneurs accelerate their fundraising journey.* The alpha version of Raiseway is currently available for free use.* Peter's work with Raiseway could completely alter the investment crowdfunding landscape.* Raiseway aims to make crowdfunding more accessible and affordable for small businesses and startups.* Peter's key tip for entrepreneurs considering crowdfunding is to thoroughly prepare and evaluate their community and connections before starting.* Peter's superpower is his grit and determination, which he developed through his experiences as an immigrant and in running his own business.* Peter believes that being okay with failure and having a few wins under your belt can help develop grit.* Raiseway can be accessed through the app; contact Peter directly. How to Develop Grit As a SuperpowerPeter developed grit as he grew up. Born in St. Peterburg, his family moved first to Moscow and later to Bryansk, a city he describes as a “hellhole.” Later, still a teenager, he immigrated to the United States, facing a fresh set of cultural challenges. The difficulties adapting to new situations, cultures and individuals helped him develop the grit he deploys to build his business.Peter faced a challenge recently. After publicly announcing the launch of the alpha version of the software would happen on April 15, the startup missed the deadline. He admits feeling ashamed due to missing the self-imposed but now public due date. After worrying that he couldn't possibly recover, he took responsibility for getting the process back on track and, within weeks, got the product launched. It is now available as a free download for a limited time for those interested in help with their crowdfunding campaigns, willing to provide feedback.Peter offers some advice for developing grit. “I am a former F-student through and through,” he says. He acknowledges that the learned helplessness phenomenon applied to him. The key to overcoming it is to “get a couple wins under your belt.” “You can point to them in your life and say, ‘Well, no, I'm not a failure. I did this, this and that.' It's not only professional, it's personal as well,” he says.By following Peter's example and advice, you can make grit a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfilePeter Rostovsky (he/him):Founder & CEO, RaisewayAbout Raiseway: Raising money with crowdfunding is prohibitively hard for businesses that need it the most - small businesses and startups. On this edition of Parallax Views, George Washington University's Dr. Marelene Laurelle, author of Is Russia Fascist?: Unraveling Propaganda East and West, joins us to discuss the recent attack that happened in the Bryansk region of Russia on March 2nd, 2023. Vladimir Putin blamed the attack on Ukraine, however a far-right neo-Nazi group known as the Russian Volunteer Corps., composed of anti-Putin right-wing Russian nationalists that have sided with Ukraine, has since taken credit for the incident. Some have speculated that the attack was a Russian false flag. Other argue that is indicative of domestic strife brewing internally within Russia. What is the truth of the matters? And why would a far-right groups be against Putin, who himself is understood as a right-wing authoritarian figure? Dr. Laurelle will answer these questions as well helping us to better understand the nature of the far-right in Russia. In addition to the Bryansk attack, Dr. Laurelle and I will discuss the relationship between the Russian far-right and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) subcultures, Russian ethno-nationalism vs. Russian imperialism, the philosopher Aleksandr Dugin, the Wagner Group and its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, Putin's rhetoric around and motivations for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian official state vs. what Dr. Laurelle calls the Russian parallel state, how messaging of Russian state media outlets differs depending on whether the audience is domestic or non-domestic, how the Putin regime manages the different faction of the Russian elite and plays them against each other, Putin's obsession with Ukraine and his rhetoric around De-Nazification, Putin's use of both Soviet nostalgia and Czarist nostalgia in his speeches (and his negative remarks about Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin), the Levada Center poll indicating that there is high support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine (and contextualizing the poll), the evolution of Putin's thought and his obsession with Ukraine, Russia and "The Great Patriotic War" rhetoric around WWII, Russia and the Baltic States, whether or not Russian elites believe their own rhetoric about de-Nazifying Ukraine, Russia and the Global South, Russia and the Muslim world, academic debate around the definition of fascism, civilizational war rhetoric in the U.S./the West and Russia, and much, much more.

News about the war in Ukraine. Today we go to the border town of Bryansk, and deal with the story…whatever it actually was. On Thursday morning, March 2, a few dozen armed men crossed over from Ukraine and raided two small towns in the Russian border region of Bryansk. The militants — described as “Ukrainian saboteurs” in hurried Russian news reports and later identified as soldiers in the so-called Russian Volunteer Corps — posed for some pictures, recorded a few breathless videos, and retreated back into Ukraine in short order. Conflicting reports followed about clashes with the incursion group: the Russian authorities said a couple of motorists were killed, but there are some odd inconsistencies in the footage later released by the Federal Security Service, while the militants themselves say they got into a shootout in one town but didn't see anyone killed. The March 2 incursion itself is fairly underwhelming, and it's hardly the first of its kind in the Bryansk area, where Russia's border with Ukraine is notoriously hard to defend. What makes the raid stand out is the leader of the group behind it: Denis Nikitin, a Russian neo-Nazi with a long history of far-right activism across Europe and especially, most recently, inside Ukraine. For more about Nikitin and the Russian Volunteer Corps, The Naked Pravda spoke to journalist Michael Colborne, who heads the Bellingcat Monitoring Project and authored the 2022 book From the Fires of War: Ukraine's Azov Movement and the Global Far Right. Guests featured in this episode: Mykola Gnatovskyy, a renowned Ukrainian legal scholar who was recently elected to serve as judge at the European Court of Human Rights. Before taking up this very prestigious nine-year appointment at the ECHR, Mykola was a professor at the Institute of International Relations, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. He also advised the Ukrainian Minister for Foreign Affairs on international criminal justice, and was a member of the International Expert Board on Crimes Committed during Armed Conflict at the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine. From 2015 until 2021, Mykola served three consecutive terms as President of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. In March of this 2022, he was one of the original signatories, together with Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs and the former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, calling for the establishment of a special tribunal to investigate Russia for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. GLOSSARY:What is the International Criminal Court?(01:58 or p.1 in the transcript)International Criminal Court (ICC): permanent judicial body established by the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (1998) to investigate, prosecute, and try individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity and to impose prison sentences upon individuals who are found guilty of such crimes. On July 1, 2002, after the requisite number of countries (60) ratified the agreement, the court began sittings. It is headquartered in the Netherlands at The Hague: source What is the War in Ukraine?(04:32 or p.2 in the transcript)In early November 2021 Russia began building up military forces along the borders of Ukraine, for the second time in a year. Over 100,000 Russian military personnel and assets were deployed in Crimea and in the Voronezh, Kursk and Bryansk regions of western Russia. Further Russian forces were deployed to Belarus for a series of exercises close to the Ukrainian border and Russian naval assets from the Baltic and Northern fleets deployed for exercises in the Black Sea. Tensions escalated following a US intelligence assessment in December 2021, which suggested that Russia could be planning an invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. On 24 February 2022 Russia launched military action in Ukraine, with forces crossing into the country from Belarus in the north, Russia in the east and Crimea in the south. Russia's actions came just days after President Putin officially recognized the self-declared independence of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People's Republic (LPR), the regions of eastern Ukraine that are under the control of Russian-backed separatist forces, and deployed “peacekeeping” forces to the region: source What is the massacre in Eastern Anatolia?(07:18 or p.2 in the transcript)Massacre in Eastern Anatolia, also known as Armenian Genocide: campaign of deportation and mass killing conducted against the Armenian subjects of the Ottoman Empire by the Young Turk government during World War I (1914–18). Armenians charge that the campaign was a deliberate attempt to destroy the Armenian people and, thus, an act of genocide. The Turkish government has resisted calls to recognize it as such, contending that, although atrocities took place, there was no official policy of extermination implemented against the Armenian people as a group: source What is the Wagner Group?(17:02 or p.5 in the transcript)Wagner Group: a network of businesses and groups of mercenaries that have been linked by overlaps in ownership and logistics networks. Entities making up the network have been described in sanctions designations by the U.S. Treasury as being involved in a wide range of activities, including working to suppress pro-democracy protests, spreading disinformation, mining for gold and diamonds, and engaging in paramilitary activity. The group, such as it is, first appeared in Ukraine in 2014, where it assisted the Russian military in the annexation of Crimea. Since then, paramilitaries and businesses have branched out to Syria—where they have fought in support of embattled President Bashar al-Assad while securing a foothold in the country's energy sector—as well as to Libya, Sudan, Madagascar, Mozambique, and the Central African Republic: source What is the occupation of Crimea and Eastern Ukraine?(31:38 or p. 8 in the transcript)The Crisis in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine: on 22 February 2014, President Yanukovych disappeared from Ukraine and a new government was installed by the Ukrainian parliament. Later that month unidentified military figures, widely thought in the West to be Russian personnel (this was later confirmed), surrounded the airports in Crimea, a majority-Russian peninsula in Ukraine and the Crimean autonomous assembly was taken over by pro-Russian forces. In March 2014 a declaration of independence was issued by the assembly and a subsequent referendum on union with Russia was held. Since then, Russia has maintained its control over Crimea and supported pro-Russian separatist forces who also took control of parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine (the Donbas) in 2014. Fighting between Russian-supported separatists and Ukrainian government forces has continued in the Donbas for the last eight years despite the negotiation of the Minsk Agreements in 2014/2015 which called for a ceasefire, the withdrawal of all foreign armed groups and constitutional reform recognizing the special status of Donetsk and Luhansk: source Democracy in Question? is brought to you by:• Central European University: CEU• The Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy in Geneva: AHCD• The Podcast Company: Novel Follow us on social media!• Central European University: @CEU• Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy in Geneva: @AHDCentreSubscribe to the show. Amazon : https://reurl.cc/g8lprR Readmoo :https://reurl.cc/jqpYmm Kobo : https://reurl.cc/GdDLgW Google : https://reurl.cc/9ZyLyn

In a study of Russian youth attitudes for Carnegie Moscow Center, a research team led by Andrey Kolesnikov and Denis Volkov gathered a total of six focus groups in three cities (Moscow, Yaroslavl, and Bryansk), assembling two groups in each location, one comprising 18-25-year-olds and the other 30-35-year-olds. The project was designed, in part, to test speculation that a supposedly liberal-leaning, relatively oppositionist new generation of Russians will challenge the current regime's grip on power. Kolesnikov and Volkov attribute the "myth" that youths formed the heart of this year's pro-Navalny protests to the Kremlin's own propaganda, arguing that the authorities used this narrative to depict the Navalny movement as an illegal enterprise, thus justifying a police crackdown. At the same time, however, the narrative betrayed the Kremlin's own concerns about "losing" the next generation. Original Article: https://meduza.io/en/feature/2021/11/23/the-next-russians
In Russia's southwestern city of Bryansk, on Wednesday, October 20, a court handed down the first verdict in the case against the creators of the online gambling company 1xBet. The court sentenced a local woman to three years in prison and an 800,000-ruble ($11,200) fine for "unlawfully organizing gambling," according to a press release from regional investigators. However, the accused was granted a respite, because she has a child under the age of 14. Local reporters from Bryansk.news identified the defendant as Olesya Mospanova, the manager of Bookmaker Pub -- a network of bookies in Bryansk. According to investigators, Mospanova allegedly accepted cash from clients and allowed them to place sports bets through the website 1xBet, whose activities are outlawed in Russia. Investigators estimate that the scheme pulled in 63 billion rubles (nearly $886 million) in illegal income -- a sum that's greater than the Bryansk region's annual budget. This interview celebrates the launch of Konstantin Voskresenskiy's 'Adventures of Kesha the Russian Boy' as an audio book in English, along with a collection of his poems, again voiced in English by me.It is furthermore a celebration of creative collaboration across global boundaries and cultural understandings, that transcends politics and stereotypes. It shows what can be done with unbounded creative intent, a will to cooperate and enabling technology. The Adventures of Kesha the Russian Boy is a coming-of-age story about the poet and engineer Konstantin Voskresenskiy, written as an autobiography. This fascinating account of the adventures of one young man takes place at a turning point in history: the early years of modern Russia, the following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The next mix on our radio may sound weird among the majority of electronic music. It was made by Soft Harm band from Bryansk. Their music is described as "the violent sound in the post-hardcore framework, melting into the emo style in the lyrics and culminates in the voices at the point of hypochondria". Sincerely hope for an emo revival in 2021.

Novozybkov is an agricultural and light industrial city of about 50,000 people, just 160km east of Chernobyl. The Bryansk town remains the most contaminated town in the Russian Federation: the area proclaimed unsuitable for human habitation is marked 1km west of its city boundary. "Midnight in Chernobyl" author Adam Higginbotham speaks about how radioactivity spread across Europe, while former Nuclear Disarmament senator Jo Vallentine shares some stories of how people have been locally affected, and not least of all, how the globally performed Elm Dance (music by Ieva Akurātere) came into being as a Deep Ecology response to environmental grief, and an intention to heal. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND Leukaemia, especially the acute types predominant in children, may be caused by ionizing radiation. After the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident on 26 April 1986, parts of Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine were contaminated with radionuclides. To date, over 270 000 people live in such contaminated regions in Russia. This study investigates whether the leukaemia incidence rates in these regions might have increased due to the radiation. MATERIALS & METHODS A prospective population-based cohort study with a control group was carried out. Cases of leukaemia previously not registered were actively sought for in medical and administrative institutions. Each case that had occurred in the study regions between 1980 and 1998 has been ascertained and verified. A descriptive analysis was then performed on the resulting data base which included 333 leukaemia cases. RESULTS There is a slight secular trend in the standardized incidence rates both in the highly contaminated and in the control regions. This increase, however, is more marked in the control regions. The incidence rates in children (0-14) in the highly contaminated regions decrease between the pre-accident (1980 to 1986) and the first post-accident period (1987-1992) and show a slight increase towards the second post-accident period (1993-1998), whereas the incidence rates in the control regions show exactly the opposite dynamic. This makes a connection between the dynamics of the incidence rates and the radiological situation highly improbable. The comparative analysis of the leukaemia incidence rates has not revealed a statistically significant difference between the population of the highly contaminated regions of the Bryansk oblast and the combined control regions of the Kaluga oblast. CONCLUSIONS There is so far no indication of an increase in leukaemia incidence rates in the general population, neither for children nor for adults. This does not contradict the current radiobiological knowledge that cancer, especially leukaemia, can be caused by ionizing radiation. The number of expected radiation-induced cases based on the risk estimates from the Japanese cohort lies within the 95% confidence limits of the spontaneous incidence rates. It would therefore, if at all present, not be statistically detectable in a population of 222 000 with a spontaneous rate of 5.4/100 000 in men and 3.3/100 000 in women in the control regions. Considering the latency periods and the age-dependent risk-curve of radiation-induced cancers, it is highly unlikely that a radiation-related increase in leukaemia or solid tumour incidence rates will become obvious in the future. The fear and apprehension caused by the overestimation of the radiation risks create a continuous stress situation and add to the present detrimental health conditions in the population. It is therefore of utmost importance to communicate not only the results but also the reliability of the study and the soundness of the data to the affected people.
