In the U.S., many of the most significant social justice victories of our time have been spearheaded by women of color leaders. From the streets, to the ballot box, to elected office, no other demographic group stands up more consistently and unequivocally for human rights, democracy, and the planet. Remarkably, they've accomplished this despite conditions—in their fields and organizations—that make leadership uniquely treacherous for them. For women of color leaders, the game is rigged. How much more could humanity be winning if we unrigged it? What might be possible, in this clutch moment of history, with so much on the line, if movements stopped benching our best in ways that negatively impact the scoreboard for everybody?Unrig the Game: What Women of Color Can Teach Everyone About Winning (Random House, 2025) equips us to support effective women of color leaders so we can all win. A former community and union organizer who started one of the largest foundations to resource women of color-led organizing, Vanessa Priya Daniel draws on candid interviews with forty-five prominent women of color movement leaders, along with her own experience at the helm of an organization, to offer an on-the-ground perspective of the obstacles leaders face, how they navigate them, and how allies can show up. Political divisions are driving wedges at all levels, national, state, communities, and families. The fracture may seem unbridgable. But Americans agree that our government does not work for us. Even acknowledging the problem can make you feel overwhelmed, and the knee-jerk reaction is often to look away because the solution feels impossible to achieve.  In this episode, Daniel G. Newman joins host Mary Whiteside to discuss his graphic novel Unrig: How to fix our broken democracy, art by George O'Connor. Unrig a nonfiction graphic novel by democracy reform leader Daniel G. It's called approval voting, and it was adopted for the first time in US history by the city of Fargo in 2018. When city officials refused to take it up, reformers kept the fight going and rallied voter support to pass the historic reform. Approval voting in Fargo was just one of the many nonpartisan election and political reforms that swept the nation in the 2018 midterms, and organizations like the Center for Election Science are setting their sights on more reforms in 2020. More than 90% of us agree — we aren’t being represented … the two-party system is rigged … we need to make sure that the “free speech” of unbridled campaign spending doesn’t drown out the free speech that points us beyond the status quo.Consider the 2014 study by Princeton University Professor Martin Gilens and Northwestern University Professor Benjamin Page that concluded that the USA is for all intents and purposes an “oligarchy” because the views of the general public have very little sway over what legislation does or doesn’t get passed — particularly when the public will is in conflict with the special interests who “own” the politicians. Consider this mind-blowing statistic: On average, a US Senator must raise $14,000 a month for six years to pay for her or his re-election campaign. That’s some $30.6 million! Do the math … do the aftermath!Meanwhile, according to CBS News some $6.8 billion was spent on the 2016 Presidential election, while just 31% of the people thought the election process “was working as well as it could.”If we consider that $6.8 billion is larger than the economies of Argentina and Poland, that’s a lot of money to spend on a campaign that leaves 70% of us unsatisfied!Fortunately, my guest today James Jameson, the National Organizing Director of Represent.Us, is here with some good news for a change — anti-corruption and election reform activists from across the political spectrum are uniting to “unrig the system” — and are planning their second annual Unrig the System Summit in Nashville at the end of March.James Jameson is an experienced political activist, who has worked on several successful campaigns in New England. Starting off with fundraising for the 2012 Marriage Equality campaign in Maine, James has led canvas efforts in three states and field efforts in two. During the 2016 election cycle, James was the New Hampshire Out-of-State Director for Bernie Sanders before joining his National Advance Team, traveling to 27 states, and building rallies of thousands of people. Since first getting into political campaigning, James has been passionate about electoral reform, and was involved with Maine’s Ranked Choice Voting victory.Represent.us has as its key platform piece the American Anti-Corruption Act, whose intention it is to:* Stop political bribery by making it illegal for lobbyists to lobby a politician and donate to their campaign. You can lobby, or you can donate, but you can’t do both. * End secret money so Americans know who is buying political power. * Fix our broken elections so the people, not the political establishment, are the ones in control. If you’re tired of the “dogma-eat-dogma” battle of the two political sides, you will find this conversation quite refreshing, as James discusses the American Anti- Corruption Act, and the dozens and dozens of successful state and local campaigns to end gerrymandering, install “ranked-choice voting” and other voting reforms, and establish public financing of elections. Check out the “explainer videos” on the Represent.us site below … and join the campaign and “upwising” if you can!Tune in this Tuesday, January 29th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET: http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/Or, find us on the Wiki archives on Wednesday: http://wikipolitiki.com/archives/To find out more about Represent.us, please go here: https://represent.us/And to find out about the Unrig the System Summit, go here: https://unrigsummit.com/One more thing… How YOU and WE Can Make a DifferenceHave you noticed that regardless of which of the two political parties you vote for, neither of them seem to be willing to confront Monsanto and agribusiness? Aired Tuesday, 6 November 2018, 5:00 PM ESTDonald Trump Is Awakening People, Left and RightAn Interview with Dr. Chuck Baldwin, Moral Majority and Christian Coalition Pioneer, and Constitutional Party Presidential Candidate in 2008“Either we will have an awakening — or a wake.” — Swami BeyondanandaIn the summer of 2015, I was waiting to board the Larkspur Ferry to take me to San Francisco for a Giants game. In the waiting area, there was a huge TV screen tuned to CNN. Donald Trump was on, and the sound was off.As I watched Trump’s gesticulation, facial expressions, and fist pumping, I looked at a fellow passenger, and we both said it at the same time — Adolf Hitler. Now more than three years later, I have seen nothing to make me think otherwise. What was clear to me then is even clearer now. What I was looking at was a megalomaniacal sociopath, who would do anything and say anything to benefit himself, and who would ultimately destroy whatever he touched. I saw a pathological liar and demagogue, with no respect for the rule of law — or the rule of love. While we have seen “dishonest” politicians before, and those involved in deep, dark misdoings, what I was looking at was someone entirely different and more sinister — someone who had the mindset and the chutzpah to make himself dictator. You might laugh at this individual who has been parodied and caricatured as a bumbling fool. They laughed at Hitler too. While Donald Trump is no “Hitler” in the sense that he has no overriding mission or ideology, his rhetoric landed with the same kinds of ordinary folks who supported Hitler. At the Unrig the System conference in New Orleans this past February, I met a number of (oxymoron alert) “moderate Republicans” who saw the clear and present danger not just in Trump, but in the Vichy Republicans in Congress blindly following him. I met Richard Painter, a former Bush administration official who has officially changed parties and became a Democrat running for the Senate in Minnesota. Since that time he has been joined by Republicans Steve Schmidt and most recently Max Boot, who exhorted moderate Republicans to vote Democrat this year in an attempt to stop that other “boot” — Jack Boot — from having control of all three branches of government and establishing a de facto fascist regime.Something that has been both puzzling and vexing to most observers, however, is how so many Evangelical Christians have fallen into lockstep behind Trump, despite the man’s — to put it too gently — “moral failings.”Our guest on Wiki Politiki this week has the perspective and background to speak to this issue. Dr. Chuck Baldwin is a conservative Christian minister, a disciple of Jerry Falwell and a founder of the Christian Coalition. After becoming a Republican in 1980 to support Ronald Reagan, he left the party during the George W. Bush presidency to join Ron Paul’s Constitution Party. Without compromising his conservative ideas — he is a Second Amendment advocate who believes in “open carry” — he offers his view of how and why the majority of his cohorts have taken the wrong road, and have become in his words “infatuated with” Donald Trump, whom he sees as an enemy of freedom, and everything the United States stands for.On this very significant Election Day, which will — rightly or not — be an up or down vote for Donald Trump, tune into this highly-unusual interview and you’ll be encouraged that the “great upwising” and awakening is occurring on all sides.Tuesday, November 6th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET : http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/Or, find us on the Wiki archives on Wednesday: http://wikipolitiki.com/archives/To find out more about Dr. Chuck Baldwin and his work, please go here: https://chuckbaldwinlive.com/Home.aspxSupport Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In The “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks)Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! In the latest episode of "In Full Color," IVN Editor Shawn Griffiths talks with RepresentUs Political Director Dan Krassner about the historic year for anti-corruption and political reform initiatives. So far, there have been 9 victories since January that have taken major steps to unrig the system, and there are several ballot measures in states across the country that could add to this monumental year for change. These efforts have brought people together from across the political spectrum -- independent voters, nonpartisan organizations, conservatives, progressives, and everyone outside and in-between who are united by the shared idea that the system is not working for the people and something needs to change. Dan and Shawn talk about the significance of the reform efforts currently underway, what the explosive growth in reform activism means for the future, and how RepresentUS -- the nation's largest grassroots, anti-corruption organization in the US -- will be involved. Be sure to leave any comments, questions, feedback you have. We want to hear from you. Thanks for listening! And as always... stay independent!

Aired Tuesday, 13 February 2018, 5:00 PM ESTEngaging the Other - Finding TRUE Common Ground in the Age of PolarizationA Conversation With Steve Olweean, Director Common Bond Institute“Before we have peace in the Middle East, we first need to create peace in the Middle West.” — Swami BeyondanandaMy colleague Bruce Lipton, cellular biologist, tells us that the next phase of human evolution is an evolution in consciousness, where we recognize that we are each and all cells in the larger body of humanity. If that is true, it’s easy to see how so much of our resource and intention is tied up in obsolete and “obsolethal” forms of interactivity that can best be seen as autoimmune disease. After all, when healthy humans on two sides of an issue spend their time and energy in combat, two things happen. First, warfare endangers not just the lives of those engaged in the conflict, but life on the planet. Secondly, precious energy and resources that could be used to work together is being dissipated and wasted. That’s why last weekend’s Unrig the System Summit in New Orleans was so encouraging … 1,500 “proactivists” (i.e., proactively moving forward as an alternative to reactively resisting) who get what Bruce and I concluded in Spontaneous Evolution — that the Darwinian notion of “survival of the fittest” has now proven to be “thrival of the fittingest.” Those who cooperate, survive and thrive.Indeed, this evolutionary upwising is well on its way, even if we don’t see it on the news. Our guest this week, Steve Olweean from the Common Bond Institute is a therapist who has spent the past 35 years in community mental health, serving underserved populations, specializing in trauma and abuse recovery, victim/perpetrator dynamics, crisis intervention, dissociative disorders, and healing negative belief systems. Since 2001, he has focused on creating cross-cultural dialogue both here and abroad to create mutual trust and understanding between Muslim and non-Muslim populations. This April, the Common Bond Institute under Steve’s direction will be holding its 8th annual Engaging the Other conference in Madison, Wisconsin. It is described as an interactive, working conference to:* Address rising polarization and animosity in our society * Advance a wider public dialogue about toxic images of “Us and Them,” * and Promote positive joint action for compassionate remedies and healing in our relationship with a perceived “Other.”Our conversation this week will focus on both the opportunities and challenges in “engaging the other”, and will focus his experiences both in the Middle East … and the Middle West. He writes: “The Other often conjures up images of strange faces, practices, and beliefs, usually in faraway places. At the same time that it challenges our understanding, our sense of normalcy, and sometimes our sense of security, it is a label we all share.”In other words, we are each an “other” to each other.Tune in this Tuesday, February 13th and find out how such “living laboratories” can unleash “the speed of trust” and turn conflict into collaboration.
