Mireille Enos followed her brother's footsteps into acting at an early age, which eventually led her to New York City to study acting. Today, she's best known for The Killing, World War Z, Sabotage, Gangster Squad, Big Love, Hanna, and now, Lucky Hank. In the latest project, Lucky Hank, Mireille plays Lily, the wife Hank (Bob Odenkirk), an English department chairman at an underfunded college who toes the line between a full-blown meltdown and the offbeat chaos of his personal and professional life. This is one of three Lucky Hank interviews, so be on the lookout for my chats with actor Diedrich Bader and creators Paul Lieberstein and Aaron Zelman. We also discuss her work with Veena Sud, who can you listen to in Episode 94. In this interview, Mireille talks about dealing with rejection, feeling embraced by New York but not Los Angeles, scripts you feel like should be yours, the unusual trajectory of The Killing, using the camera as your witness, and advice for writers to create roles actors desperately want to play. And, if you haven't seen Lucky Hank yet, there is a partially spoiler for Episode 4 around the 27:00 minute mark. Want more? Anna invites writer-director Veena Sud (The Killing, Seven Seconds) and actor Mireille Enos to discuss The Lie, part of Amazon Prime Video’s Welcome To The Blumhouse series. Shot in the snowy suburbs of Toronto, this unsettling crime-drama shows a young girl’s terrible secret unravel in horrifying ways. Beware of minor spoilers. Veena talks to Anna about what drew her to adapting The Lie, and why it was important to address social issues such as the sexualisation of women and racial profiling. She further speaks to the importance of diversity in positions of power in filmmaking and criticism. Veena also produces some fantastic film recommendations for Halloween, including Night of the Living Dead and It Follows. Mireille talks about playing Rebecca, the mother of Kayla (Joey King), and speaks highly of Veena’s directorial skills. She also revisits her roles in Hanna and The Killing, both also available to watch on Prime Video now. Keep listening to hear Mireille’s own terrible secret about horror movies… Finally, critic Kayleigh Donaldson shares her thoughts on the Suspiria remake, American Psycho, and Midsommar – all on Amazon Prime Video now. They also talk about the recent female-focused horror releases Saint Maud, Carmilla, Relic and Cordelia. Finally, Kayleigh recommends Carnival of Souls (1962) and the works of Ida Lupino, and suggests checking out the horror streaming service Shudder on Amazon. Other movie mentions: Seven Seconds (2018), Fright Night, The Witches (2020), The Captive (2014). This episode is in partnership with Amazon Prime Video. Veena Sud, screenwriter behind Seven Seconds, The Killing, and Cold Case returns to discuss her latest venture, Quibi’s short-form series, The Stranger. Quibi is a short-form mobile platform from founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, the producer of movies like Shrek, The Prince of Egypt, and The Road to El Dorado. In a previous interview, we spoke with Sud about “slow burn storytelling,” which applied to the rhythm and tone of our work. The Stranger, of course, is somewhat the opposite of her previous formula. With all of these parameters in mind, Sud created The Stranger, a story about an unassuming rideshare driver who picks up a nightmare passenger. In this interview, Sud discusses writing for phone viewers meaning horizontal and vertical viewing, how Quibi programming is a hybrid of movie and TV writing, how to weaponize an audience, how she uses the zeitgeist of headlines for inspiration, and three ways to trick yourself out of writer’s block. If you haven’t seen the series, watch for some light spoilers around the 16-minute mark, and make sure to also go back and listen to my original conversation with Sud in Episode 94 of the podcast. Synopsis: Johanna Morrigan (Beanie Feldstein) is a sixteen-year-old, extrovert from the outskirts of Wolverhampton with raging hormones and gigantic dreams. Even though she loves her big, boisterous, dysfunctional family, Johanna knows with absolute certainty that there is something bigger and better for her out in the world. And when she finds it, only then will she start ‘being me’. But quite what ‘me’ is, hasn’t been invented yet. With her inimitable wit and bottomless imagination, writing is surely her ticket to a brand-new self. After a couple of false starts, Johanna wins a job at top music magazine, D&ME and reinvents herself as revered and feared music critic – Dolly Wilde, the enfant terrible. As she slaughters her way to greater and greater success, the lines between Johanna Morrigan and Dolly Wilde begin to haze. Can she curate her success and hold onto her family, her heroes and her heart? And once you’ve built your girl, is it possible to tear her down and start again? We are so lucky this week to have TV creator, writer, and director Veena Sud on the program. She's most well known for creating the TV show, The Killing. But she's got a new show out now called Seven Seconds. It follows the aftermath of the death of a 15 year old black cyclist who is killed in a hit and run accident by a white police officer. She's also on the program to discuss Alfred Hitchcock's classic Rear Window. Veena elaborates on the effect that Hitchcock has had on her career, and how it has influenced her being drawn to darker stories. She reveals that she's just completed her first feature about a teenage girl who accidentally kills her best friend. She also tells a wonderful story of working with the late Jonathan Demme on her show Seven Seconds. This is a truly engrossing episode that deals with the craft behind writing and cultivating a meaningful story. You can watch Seven Seconds on Netflix. 'Seven Seconds' is arguably one of the boldest stories on Netflix. The 10-episode drama comes from 'The Killing' showrunner Veena Sud. The story begins with a hit-and-run of an African-American teenager by a Jersey City cop. The mostly white police force covers up the incident, which causes public controversy. “My son laid in the cold, in pain, for hours,” said Regina King’s character, Latrice Butler. “And, whoever did this is free.” What’s perhaps most interesting about Sud’s take on this type of story is all of the research involved and the in-depth look at how everyone suffers from such a tragedy. We sat down with Veena Sud to talk about her fascination with mystery, slow-burn storytelling, the Statue of Liberty as symbolism, and her passion for research along with the importance of plucking images from real life. In addition to this audio format, the print interview for this conversation is available on Creative Screenwriting Magazine’s website.
