Man: Brand New Day over.

Scream a little louder! We're celebrating the 25th anniversary of “Scream 3,” the final chapter (for a while!) in Wes Craven's iconic slasher trilogy. Join us as we revisit the Hollywood horrors facing Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and Dewey Riley (David Arquette). We'll dissect the killer's motives, discuss the addition of stars like Patrick Dempsey, Parker Posey, and Scott Foley, and ponder how real life events changed the direction of the film. Was “Scream 3” a fitting end? Or did the script changes by Ehren Kruger fall short of Kevin Williamson's original vision? Joining us for this discussion is one of our favorite guests, Mark J. Parker of the Release Date Rewind podcast, who is not only the king of anniversaries, but has also been with us on every single Scream episode we have done to date! Based on Finn's short film Laura Hasn't Slept (2020), the film stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist who witnesses the bizarre suicide of a patient, then goes through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences that lead her to believe she is experiencing something supernatural. It also features Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan, as well as Caitlin Stasey reprising her role from Laura Hasn't Slept. A feature adaptation of Finn's short was announced in June 2020, and the cast was added in October 2021. Principal photography began that month in New Jersey and ended in November. Originally set for release on the streaming service Paramount+, distributor Paramount Pictures opted to release the film theatrically after positive test screenings. Smile premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 22, 2022, and was released in the United States on September 30. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $217 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million. A sequel, Smile 2, is scheduled to be released in October 2024. The Ring is a 2002 American supernatural horror film directed by Gore Verbinski and written by Ehren Kruger. Starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, and Brian Cox, the film focuses on Rachel Keller (Watts), a journalist who discovers a cursed videotape that causes its viewers to die seven days later. It is a remake of Hideo Nakata's 1998 film Ring, based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki. The Ring was theatrically released in the United States on October 18, 2002, by DreamWorks Pictures. It was a box-office success, grossing $249.3 million worldwide on a $48 million budget, making it one of the highest-grossing horror remakes of all time. The Ring received mixed-to-positive reviews, with critics in particular praising the atmosphere and visuals, Bojan Bazelli's cinematography, Verbinski's direction and the performances of the cast (particularly Watts). At the 29th Saturn Awards, the film won in two categories: Best Horror Film and Best Actress (for Watts). The film is the first installment of the American Ring series, and is followed by The Ring Two (2005) and Rings (2017). The success of The Ring inspired American remakes of several other Asian and Japanese horror films, including The Grudge (2004) and Dark Water (2005). Plot Teenage girls Katie and Becca discuss an urban legend about a cursed videotape that causes whoever views it to die in one week. That night, Katie, who viewed it one week ago, is killed by an unseen force. At Katie's funeral, her mother asks her sister Rachel, a Seattle-based journalist, to investigate her daughter's death. Rachel discovers that Katie's friends all died in bizarre accidents at the same time as Katie's death. Rachel visits the Shelter Mountain Inn, where Katie and her friends saw the tape. She finds and views the tape; it contains strange and frightening imagery. She then receives a phone call from an unknown caller who whispers, "Seven days". Though initially skeptical, Rachel quickly begins to experience supernatural occurrences linked to the tape.

Arlington Road was 77th highest grossing movie of 1999, released 25 years ago last week on July 9th, unfortunately crowded out by some other big releases, namely American Pie, released the same day, as well as Wild Wild West, Tarzan, and The General's Daughter, all in their second weeks. Directed by acclaimed music video director Mark Pellington (Pearl Jam's "Jeremy"), with a script from future Oscar nominee Ehren Kruger. a score by David Lynch's personal composer Angelo Badalamenti, and starring two of the finest actors of their generation, Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins, Arlington Road has a lot going for it. 25 years later, it's also turned out to be one of the most prescient and relevant movies of the year. At times unbearably tense, deadly serious, and eye-rollingly goofy, it's ambitious, uneven, and incredibly entertaining. Lawyer, occasional movie producer, and writer Matt Belenky is probably the world's most biggest Arlington Road fan (prove us wrong!), so John and Jenn invited him on to look back on this very 1990s genre film.

Rachel and Noah's young son Aidan ends up watching the tape. Aidan also possesses some supernatural abilities, which he uses to help with Rachel's investigation. Rachel heads for Moesko Island to speak to Anna's widower Richard, while Noah travels to Eola Psychiatric Hospital to view Anna's medical files. Rachel discovers that Anna had adopted a girl, Samara, who possessed the ability to psychically etch images onto objects and into people's minds, tormenting her parents and their horses. Noah finds a psychiatric file on Samara that mentions a missing video record last seen by Richard. Returning to the Morgan home, Rachel finds a birth certificate proving that Samara is the biological child of Richard and Anna. She also finds the missing video, in which Samara explains her powers during a therapy session. Richard insists that Samara is evil and commits suicide by electrocuting himself. Noah and Rachel find a loft in the barn, which the Morgans used to isolate Samara from themselves and the outside world. There is an image of a tree behind the wallpaper; Rachel recognizes it as a tree at the Shelter Mountain Inn.

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing TOP GUN: MAVERICK (2022), currently playing on MGM+, Paramount+ and still in theaters. The long awaited sequel to 1986's TOP GUN, this film is written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie; from a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks and based on characters created by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film follows Maverick (Tom Cruise) 30 years after the first film's story wrapped and he is still causing mayhem and pushing the envelope in the Navy as a pilot. He's brought back in to teach a new crop of fighter pilots, including Goose's now adult son, Rooster (Miles Teller). Maverick is tasked with the mission of getting these Top Gun graduates ready for a mission that could potentially have a high collateral cost. The film has a run time of 2 h and 1 m and is rated PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

Much is the same but the most important SCREAM 3 details of all have changed in Ehren Kruger's Scream 3 first draft. Top Gun: Maverick is a 2022 American action drama film directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, from a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks. It serves as a sequel to Top Gun (1986). The film stars Tom Cruise as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a test pilot, alongside Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer. Set 36 years after its predecessor, it follows Maverick's return to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program (also known as "Top Gun"), where he must confront his past as he trains a group of younger fighter pilots, among them the son of Maverick's deceased best friend Goose. Development for a Top Gun sequel was announced in 2010 by Paramount Pictures. Cruise and Kilmer were approached to return in their roles from the original, as were producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott. By mid-2012 a draft of the screenplay was finished, however Scott died by suicide and the film's pre-production was put on hold. The film is dedicated to Scott's memory. In June 2017, Kosinski was hired and wrote a new draft of the script. Principal photography took place from May 2018 to April 2019 in California, Washington, D.C., and Maryland. The film was shot using IMAX-certified 6K full-screen cameras. Its release, initially scheduled for July 12, 2019, was delayed first by efforts to shoot several complex action sequences, then by the COVID-19 pandemic and scheduling conflicts. Top Gun: Maverick premiered at CinemaCon on April 28, 2022, and was theatrically released in the United States on IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX and Dolby Cinema on May 27, 2022, by Paramount Pictures. It will be followed shortly thereafter by release on Paramount+. The film received widespread praise from critics, who commended the direction, action sequences, visuals, emotional weight, and performances; many deeming it superior to the first film. The film has grossed $275 million worldwide, making it the eighth-highest grossing film of 2022. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

It's the new millennium, Y2K didn't kill you, or maybe it did.. and this is all a twilight zone episode. This is the only part of the Scream trilogy not to be written by Kevin Williamson. Ehren Kruger (writer of the film Arlington Road, who would later go on to write the screenplays for The Ring, The Ring Two, The Skeleton Key, and Rings) was given the task of writing the script based on notes Williamson himself had sketched out. Scream 3 delivers an end to the original trilogy with a big reveal. It was only speculation up to this point that Sidney had siblings or other family members. Which, still begs the question, will Scream 6 invite more of her long-lost family members? Wes Craven continued to make this series a true Meta in its class. The awareness this movie has is only behind movies that incorporate 4th wall inserts and other additions. The making of Stab 3 gives a great excuse to invite a new batch of characters that don't need a lot of substance. Gale's Actor portrays the perfect yin to her yang. An almost picture-perfect sister annoying sister interaction. The idea of the killer following multiple scripts, making everyone constantly guess, sounds good on paper. My only issue was the legacy characters didn't seem to have any issue surviving. Yes, Sidney was shot, but it's obvious she would wear a vest. They were too powerful for a Thanos-like antagonist who controlled the outcome of a trilogy. The series ties up any loose ends that could bring Ghostface back...or does it? Obviously, nothing ever really ends --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drekculazunderworld/support

The Ring-A-Palooza curse won't release Zack and Kelly just yet! Because Hollywood's Ring movies got so much discussion in the previous episodes, it seemed only fair to revisit those movies and offer updated opinions on them. Plus, the much-maligned The Ring Two was actually directed by the original Ring director Hideo Nakata, making it an interesting movie to talk a little about.Sneaking into the discussion is talk about the Jonathan Liebesman short film Rings from 2005, which was a promotional tie-in short that bridged the two Hollywood features (there would later be a feature-length Hollywood film sequel titled Rings in 2017 but it does not share the same plot as the short discussed here). The short film Rings is included on The Ring's Blu-ray and The Ring Two's unrated DVD. It can also be viewed on YouTube, presented here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stddELfKnsYGore Verbinski's The Ring can be found on Blu-ray and DVD. Hideo Nakata's The Ring Two is only on DVD. Movies I Love That No One Talks About

Veteran screenwriter Adam Gaines (FX's THE BRIDGE, NBC's STATE OF AFFAIRS, Hulu's INTO THE DARK) joins the show to talk about a thriller with one of the most brutal endings in recent film history, a film that put screenwriter Ehren Kruger on the map, a movie Adam literally had the poster of on his wall, one of the movies that made me want to get into screenwriting, ARLINGTON ROAD. Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins square off in this nervy, paranoid thriller, which would be explosively timely if it came out today. A great re-watch, this film has stood the test of time as a classic thriller, but was neither a critical darling nor a huge hit upon its release.  --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dan-benamor/support

The 3D blockbuster film Transformers: Age of Extinction is currently screening in most of the major cinemas across China. The box office results have been very good for the first few days. Today our movie review Laiming will check out the movie for you. One important criterion we Chinese use to evaluate blockbusters is something called a pee-point. It describes the part of a movie where nothing exciting happens and therefore the viewers could safety embark on a journey to the lavatory without missing anything significant. Often some nice amateur critics online would kindly pinpoint these pee-points so other viewers would know when to visit the loo. And of course, the more pee-points there are in a film, the worse it is considered to be. "Transformers: Age of Extinction" have no pee-points for first time viewers: all viewers should be willing to exercise control of their bladders in anticipation of exciting moments. But for those who care to look back after 166 minutes of boredom, they'll regret having endured so many pee-points and wonder what's happened to the spectacles promised in the trailer. Indeed, there is a marked downgrade in a film which is supposed to be all about spectacles. Instead of giant machines smashing at each other, viewers get to see tiny, paranoid humans hunting down friendly Autobots. It can be quite an impressive scene to see a swarm of ants bringing down a giant elephant, but that sensation is missing in Michael Bay's latest outing. According to a popular joke about his fiasco, Michael Bay had started this film with a one-page story on his left hand, and a voluminous manual on the right hand which outlined all the products and faces that absolutely have to appear in the epically long film. With all due respect for the storywriter Ehren Kruger, and whoever and whatever must appear in the movie, I think the obsession with product placement destroyed every possibility for "Age of Extinction" to develop a decent story. The viewers are fully aware that they are buying the tickets for a sensational experience, not a seriously intriguing story, but nonetheless the mediocre sensations should at least make some sense, "Age of Extinction" hardly makes any sense. The last part of the film is set in China and is particularly unnecessary. This shift of setting may help Paramount squeeze out more shares of the box office in China, but it also creates a dent in other markets. I don't know the math behind it, but I certainly hope Michael Bay have worked that out before turning on the cameras. Besides, the move also fuels the egocentric hallucinations on some part of Chinese critics who have begin to entertain the idea that even Hollywood is trying to lick our boots. That's exactly what is needed to stifle China's meagre creative strength in the movie industry. The only improvement about "Transformers: Age of Extinction" is: the viewers could finally distinguish one giant machine from another, but that's probably because there is a much smaller number of them. Michael Bay's effort to reduce cost and boost profit have yielded an awfully long commercial in IMAX 3D, moviegoers and companies may continue paying for its sequel, I will not be part of that again when it returns in 2016.

The nineties ended, and so did the Scream franchise (until just now). Off the success of the previous entries, Dimension Films demanded a complete trilogy. Wes Craven and his cast were brought back yet again, with at least one key participant in a severely reduced capacity. Equally as important, original author Kevin Williamson was missing this time out, having been replaced by Ehren Kruger. The results were a mixed bag of rampant cameos, Hollywood in-jokes and some occasional thrills. Sidney Prescott has changed her name and disappeared, now working as a crisis counselor by phone. Meanwhile, Stab 3 is steamrolling into production on a big movie set. Surprise, surprise, the cast members in said picture start getting themselves killed. Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley play Scooby-Doo on the studio back lot, discovering that the killer is leaving behind pictures of Sid's Mother, forcing the young heroine out of hiding as she is continually haunted by her past. Please join Scott Carelli and I as we discuss Directors-for-hire, arbitrary hallucinations and dream sequences, ridiculous, obvious red herrings and how Scream 3 plays more like one of the Stab movies than a legitimate entry into this once fresh and creative series. Hopefully, the upcoming fourth film will get things back on track. Remember to listen for the preemptive countdown before starting the movie on your DVD.
