Screenwriter and playwright Abi Morgan has worked across a diverse array of themes and genres for more than 25 years. She wrote the television series The Split, a domestic drama involving divorce lawyers, and created the psychological Netflix series Eric. Her other television credits include Sex Traffic, for which she won a BAFTA for Best Drama serial in 2005, and The Hour, the television news drama which earned her an Emmy award in 2012. Her film credits include The Iron Lady, which starred Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher; historical drama Suffragette; and Shame, co-written with the director Steve McQueen. Her recent book This Is Not A Pity Memoir recounts her husband's recovery after serious illness, and her own treatment for cancer. Abi Morgan tells John Wilson about her childhood in a theatrical family; her father was the director Gareth Morgan and her mother is the actor Pat England. She chooses the author, screenwriter and director Nora Ephron as an important influence, and particularly the film Heartburn which Ephron adapted from her semi-autobiographical divorce novel Heartburn. Abi Morgan also recalls the work of television screenwriter Kay Mellor, whose series Band Of Gold and Playing The Field also influenced her own writing. She describes how seeing an exhibition of the work of artist Cornelia Parker, including her installation Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View, inspired some of Abi's early theatre work including her plays Splendour and The Mistress Contract. The last few years of Abi Morgan’s life would make an incredible TV show, although you might not believe it because of the plot twists. One of those twists is that Abi herself is an Emmy-award-winning screenwriter of movies like Iron Lady, with Meryl Streep, and TV dramas like The Split. But nothing could have prepared her for the cascading series of events that began on a very ordinary day. The crescendo of this story is that, after waking up from a coma, Abi's partner of 20 years didn't recognise her. And only her... Listen to the second half of Mia's conversation with Abi here. Přesnější by to ovšem bylo s New Yorkem. Speciálně s tím, který jste mohli zažít v 70. a 80. letech minulého století. Pamětníci vzpomínají na nezkrotnou energii města, která pohltila a ovlivnila vše, výtvarné umění, hudbu i filmy. "V sedmdesátkách to byla regulérní válečná zóna. Znásilnění, vraždy, tohle všechno se v New Yorku dělo den co den. V osmdesátkách přišla epidemie cracku. V té době stříleli gangsteři v restauracích a bylo to naprosto normální. V našich filmech jsme se to akorát pokoušeli zachytit. Giuliani (bývalý starosta, který se rozhodl zbavit New York kriminality - pozn. aut.) pak město vyčistil a zbavil ho všeho drsného a skutečného. Our latest guests on Soundtracking are Abi Morgan and Lucy Forbes - respectively the writer and the director of the quite extraordinary Eric, which is available to watch right now on Netflix. To try to describe this series in a couple of sentences would be to do it an injustice, but very broadly speaking it involves a man who believes he can find his missing son with the help of a giant puppet called Eric.
This week on a busy Screentime John Fardy talks to Benedict Cumberbatch about his role in the new series ‘Eric' on Netlfix as well as co-stars Gaby Hoffman and McKinley Belcher III and its creator Abi Morgan. John also chats to Matthew Modine about his new cycling-themed sports drama ‘Hard Miles' as well as working with Stanley Kubrick on 'Full Metal Jack'. Plus famed director Richard Linklater talks about his new Movie ‘Hit Man'.
Hollywood star Benedict Cumberbatch talks about his new series Eric, where he plays a troubled puppeteer in 80s New York whose life and marriage unravel when his young son disappears and the only help he has to find him is from a giant imaginary monster who follows him everywhere. Created by British screenwriter Abi Morgan, the show opens on Netflix on Thursday.Bernard Butler's first solo album in 25 years - Good Grief - is released on 31st May. He plays his latest single and reflects on a career that has involved highly successful collaborations with an eclectic range of artists including Duffy, Jessie Buckley, Tricky and The Libertines. 100 years after his death, Franz Kafka's papers are on display at a new exhibition at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. In today's episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast host Mike DeAngelo delves into the underworld to wrestle with the emotions of “Eric.” The Abi Morgan-written Netflix series follows Vincent, a neurotic puppeteer whose son goes missing, leading him to attempt to solve the case with his son's imaginary friend - a monster named Eric. The show stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Gaby Hoffmann, McKinley Belcher III, Dan Fogler, Ivan Morris Howe, and more. Joining Bingeworthy to discuss their harrowing mini-series are Benedict Cumberbatch (“Doctor Strange,” “The Power of the Dog”) and Gaby Hoffmann (“Girls,” “Now & Then”). During the interview, both described what brought them to the show; however, Hoffmann noted feeling conflicted at first for a very understandable reason. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

Imagine if a screenwriter wrote a plot like this: Some dude goes on a trial medication, but it causes a brain seizure, and he collapses... when he wakes up, he develops a peculiar cognitive condition in which he believes that his partner of two decades and mother of his children is an imposter. Yep, this brown-eyed, brunette-haired human is simply masquerading as his blue-eyed, dark-haired life partner of over 20 years... crazy stuff, right!? I mean, any screenwriter would have to be on some serious hallucinogenic substances to come up with such a story! Except for Abi. She penned it, but it's no creative fiction screenplay... it's her book. Her memoir, in fact, titled "This Is Not A Pity Memoir." And that's not all, amidst all of this unfolding, Abi faced down breast cancer, adding another layer to her journey. In our conversation, we delve into the cathartic experience of simultaneously being within and chronicling such a remarkable tale. She contemplates the question of ownership: Whose story is it… Jacob's or Abi's? Through it I was also personally drawn to profound contemplation about the nature of love (what even is it), the complexities of forming relationships, and the delicate threads of trust and connection (and reconnection). Abi is an accomplished screenwriter who has not only paved her way but has also acted as a guiding light for countless female screenwriters. Our chat also delves deeply into this aspect of her journey. Abi is insightful, expressive creative and articulate and I'm beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to spend some time speaking with her. Abi Morgan is the brilliant screen writer of huge films like The Iron Lady, Shame and the hugely successful TV series, The Split. She is also the author of the memoir ‘This Isn't A Pity Memoir' charting the devastating story of her husband's illness in which she was ‘absolutely the same and profoundly changed.' As someone who uses words as a profession, we discover in this podcast that Abi uses words to help her think, to make sense and connect, and to enable us to enter her internal world. Abi does this with speed and eloquence, so hold onto your coat tails and listen along with us as we dive deep into her whirlwind of a story. In this episode we discuss: How trauma is truly devastating and yet how minutiae or humour can feel life-saving. That while we are in the crisis, which is relentless and frightening, we can't truly feel or face it, often we deal with it in retrospect. How through her work Abi may have unconsciously been answering the puzzle of herself – maybe we all do this at some level? Why love is a live thing – it is communication and action, it is messy and annoying, and it can even be dead and then the profound revelatory truth, it can return. As Abi puts it, ‘Love is the flower in winter that says nothing.' The paradox of using artifice to find truth. This is an episode that will marinate in your minds – it's a true gem of an episode and incredibly powerful too. [REBROADCAST FROM July 19, 2022] Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Abi Morgan was relieved when her husband woke up from a long coma, following a harrowing experience with a mysterious illness. But that relief was short-lived when she learned that her husband thought that she was a stranger posing as his wife. Morgan tells her family's story, and their journey to recovery, in her book This Is Not a Pity Memoir.
Over the Christmas period and into January I'm going to be replaying some of my quiet favourite episodes of 2022. First up is screenwriter Abi Morgan. This episode first aired in March.---Today's guest is a woman I've admired for the longest time: stage and screenwriter Abi Morgan. Throughout her thirty year career Abi has written some of our most memorable drama: Shame, Sex Traffic, The Queen, Iron Lady, The Hour (for which she won an Emmy), Suffragette and, most recently, the BBCone hit, The Split. In her work, female characters took centre stage long before that became the fashionable thing to do.But now, Abi has been forced to take centre stage herself. Four years ago, she returned home one lunchtime to find her partner of 20 years, Jakob, collapsed on the bathroom floor. It was the start of a sequence of events that would upend their family forever. And it's the subject of perhaps the most extraordinary memoir I have ever read - This is Not a Pity memoir. And it isn't. It's about love, trauma and ultimately - weirdly! - about hope. And just in case you haven't heard me wanging on about it, it is, without doubt, my non-fiction book of 2022.Abi joined me to talk candidly about the cataclysmic impact of Jake's illness, the long - and ongoing - journey to rebuild their family and how, in the midst of all that, she coped with her own breast cancer diagnosis. She also told me about being a lone woman in a world of white men in leather jackets, budging up to make room at the table and why she's done with being “user-friendly”.You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including This Is Not A Pity Memoir by Abi Morgan and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me!And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter, please join The Shift community. What I Discuss With Rabbi Avremi Zipple About Finding Purpose In Your Pain Rabbi Avremi Zippel came forward publicly in 2019 about the decade of sexual abuse he survived from a trusted childhood caretaker. Since then, Avremi discussed why he took an advocacy role in battling sexual abuse worldwide and championing survivors. During our discussion, Rabbi Zippel shows survivors of child sexual abuse how they can overcome their ordeal through support, love, and acceptance. Avremi's childhood growing up in an orthodox Jewish family where he was homeschooled. How his caretaker, who entered his life as a close family friend, ultimately altered it forever. Avremi discusses the moment watching Law and Order in his early twenties when he realized he had suffered child sexual abuse. Why he felt self-blame for the abuse and decided to keep it a secret from his family and wife. How burying it ultimately had devastating effects on his life. Why going through talk therapy opened allowed him to start to heal from his past. We then turn to the healing journey he has been on. Why he chose to report the incident to the police. We discuss the eventual trial and its ultimate verdict. We examine how his life has changed following the verdict and his advice to others on how to overcome abuse and trauma. And so much more. What I Discuss With Dr. Kara Fitzgerald About How You Reverse Your Biological Age Through Lifestyle and Diet Choices Dr. Fitzgerald and I discuss how there is a link between aging and chronic disease, and it has everything to do with epigenetics and their effect on aging. Biological age looks at specific patterns of a key epigenetic mark called DNA methylation. These DNA methylation patterns can reliably predict how fast our body is aging. Methylation is as essential to our bodies as breathing and is happening in our bodies and within our cells all of the time. Therefore, if you can give yourself the DNA methylations of a younger you, you can reset your biological aging process. She provides key ways to do this throughout our interview that are based on her years of experience backed by clinical trials. Why do most adults spend the last 16 years of their lives suffering from chronic conditions and taking multiple medications? Why reversing biological age is key. Why it's epigenetics and not your genetics that determines your level of health and age How is epigenetic expression greatly influenced by DNA methylation? How do our diet and lifestyle choices impact DNA methylation? The results of her research and a groundbreaking clinical trial showed a reduction of biological age by three years. Why it is our daily choices and routines that add years to your life or reduce them Her diet and lifestyle program which increases healthspan and reduces your biological age. And so much more. Vanas about the Warrior Within Drawing inspiration from Native American philosophy and tradition, D.J. discusses how The Warrior Within showcases a new standard of personal power in the face of overwhelming disorder. A genuine warrior is not the most formidable or most courageous person in the room. A real warrior is committed to self-proficiency, knows how to navigate life's transitions and disruption, converts setbacks into possibilities for accomplishment, refuses to give up, and most importantly, always fights for something greater than the self. How going through the Sundance Ceremony transformed his life and image of being a warrior. Air Force Academy experiences What a warrior is and what a warrior is not. What is the difference between a fighter and a warrior? Intentional desire to serve in the right way. The importance of each of us finding our own tribe. Why can't we be a warrior when we're falling apart inside? How can you apply the warrior spirit to overcome perfectionism? Why Humility is the great equalizer. Where to Find D.J. Abi Morgan is the BAFTA and Emmy award-winning screenwriter of films like Suffragette, Shame and The Iron Lady, as well as creating the impossibly brilliant BBC drama The Split. But all the screenwriting expertise in the world could not have prepared her for the series of cataclysmic events that shattered her life three years ago. Now she's written a book about those events, 'This is Not a Pity Memoir.' It's a love story, but not as you know it.Abi joins Bryony to talk about the 'quiet drama' of a loved one in a coma, continuing to find joy in the darkness, and the terrifying realisation that she couldn't hide behind actors and directors in her own life. This is not a Pity Memoir, by Abi Morgan |Read more from Bryony: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/authors/bryony-gordon/ |For 30 days' free access to The Telegraph: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/madworld |Follow Bryony on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bryonygordon/ |See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Abi Morgan was relieved when her husband woke up from a long coma, following a harrowing experience with a mysterious illness. But that relief was short-lived when she learned that her husband thought that she was a stranger posing as his wife. Morgan tells her family's story, and their journey to recovery, in her new book This Is Not a Pity Memoir.
When you share your life with someone, you take on the idea of being a caretaker if something goes wrong, but only in the abstract. But when that idea becomes a reality, life changes in so many ways you may never expect. My guest this week is Abi Morgan. Abi is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter ("The Iron Lady") whose new book “This is Not a Pity Memoir” is now available. Editorial Reviews Review "With her trademark deadpan, trenchant wit, and a deeply soulful mindfulness, Abi Morgan takes a breathtaking hike on the cliff edge of a life upended by illness. By turns harrowing, cracking sharp and heartbreaking, it is...comforting to accompany someone with her sense of humor and the absurd on this trip- (this) book is a gift to anyone who has been similarly unmoored by fate and the furies.” -- Meryl Streep “The kind of book you will find yourself saying urgently, over and over, to friends. “Have you read it? Have you read it?" -- Caitlin Moran “Gripping, funny and always honest.” -- David Nicholls "There are no words. I was stunned, in every sense, by this heart-breaking, profound and deeply human memoir. Like CS Lewis on grief, Morgan finds truth and beauty in the darkest places. I feel changed by this book. I will never forget it." -- Meg Mason, author of Sorrow & Bliss "From the very first line I couldn't stop reading. Abi invites you in to what feels almost like a thriller, then quickly a heart bursting romantic comedy and a devastating drama. Even if this was fiction it would be impossible to stop thinking about this book long after reading. The fact that this is Abi's real life experience brought forth as this astonishing piece of writing is truly breathtaking. It's arrestingly honest, funny, profound and exquisitely written. I could not have loved it more." -- Carey Mulligan “A mash-up of all the things I love in a book – honesty, comedy, pathos and what- happens-next. It's brutal – in a good way – but above all else it's a testament to kindness, stickability and enduring love.” -- Kit de Waal "An extraordinary tale told extraordinarily well." -- Marina Hyde "I wept. I dared to hope. I felt my heart crack. Exceptional." -- Sam Baker “A profound look at the complexities of love, even at its most mundane. Equal parts savage and sublime, this obliterates notions of memory and intimacy with grace and precision….[A] raw and incandescent debut.” -- Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A candid, intimate memoir of a harrowing time.” -- Kirkus Reviews --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message
Abi Morgan's husband woke from a coma and didn't recognise her. Abi is a playwright and screenwriter based in London, and she'd made a name for herself writing successful and often highly emotional films and TV Series such as The Iron Lady, Shame, and The Split. In 2019 her life took such a strange and unfamiliar turn, she says it was almost like she'd landed in one of her scripts. Her partner Jacob was ill and put into a medically induced coma. Eight months later, he woke up, and no longer recognised Abi as his wife. Abi has written a book about her experiences called This Is Not a Pity Memoir. Presenter: Emily Webb Producer: Harry Graham
Can you tell your own story? Viv Groskop talks to award-winning playwright and screenwriter, Abi Morgan, whose work includes The Split, The Iron Lady, The Hour and Suffragette. Abi has occupied and owned many rooms in her life and career – the solitary writer's room, the family rooms of bustle, the emergency hospital room, the space on set to direct. In all these arenas she's adapted herself while keeping a steady eye on maintaining space to tell the stories she wants to tell. Four years ago, Abi and her family's lives were blown apart by a devastating medical emergency suffered by her partner. How would this sudden and unwelcome plot twist affect Abi's life and writing? Channelling confusion and pain, Abi turned the lens onto her own life in This is Not a Pity Memoir. She reveals how a space to write has always been essential to her survival and none more so than in these crisis years. But having reached relative dry land, she tells Viv that it's not over yet. There are more rooms to own and more stories to tell. Listen to This is Not a Pity Memoir on BBC Radio 4 A new updated edition of Viv's book, How to Own the Room is out now. @vivgroskop
