The Trump administration is issuing a steady stream of controversial executive orders that are testing Congress, the courts, and the Constitution. This "flooding the zone with shit" strategy is making it difficult for the media to keep up and provide in-depth coverage. Today Bill speaks with leading Media Reporter, Oliver Darcy. Darcy, formerly with CNN, now writes the excellent daily newsletter, Status. Bill and Oliver discuss how the media is struggling to adequately cover and contextualize the Trump administration's actions, which range from pardoning Capitol rioters to making extreme claims about seizing control of Gaza. There are concerns that some media outlets are caving to pressure from the administration or the administration's allies.Examples of the media's challenges include the Politico subscription scandal, the 60 Minutes lawsuit, and the Pentagon removing longstanding media outlets from their press corps. Darcy calls for the media to adopt a different approach, such as framing coverage as a "national crisis" and devoting more resources and airtime to these issues. Their discussion exposes the Trump administration's efforts to overwhelm and undermine the media, and spotlights the media's struggle to effectively cover and contextualize the administration's actions. Bill is a subscriber to Oliver's newsletter and suggest you do as well. We gladly roll out the red carpet this week, on the Rick Flynn Presents podcast, and welcome in veteran reporter DAVID TERESHCHUK to our worldwide show. David Tereshchuk leapt from an unpromising childhood in a small town on the English-Scottish borders to a precocious high-flying career as a TV journalist, first in London, then New York, interviewing such luminaries as Nelson Mandela and countless others. During his working life, he has managed to extract revealing answers from tyrants and the oppressed, but never managed to coax his mother into admitting who his father was, even after her revelation to him, when he was in his 50s, that she had been raped, aged 15, by a priest. Alongside his career, the search for his mother's abuser has haunted him, adding further layers of stress to a life already marked by alcoholism and insecurity. This is his astonishing story, and one that deserves to sit alongside those of Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings and David Brinkley. A compelling addition to EnvelopeBooks' "Media" and "Memoir" titles. Free to air TV was once the only place to watch your favourite football match, but that could change as streaming services and tech companies now compete for sports media rights. Sports bodies sell their rights to broadcasters, who then sell advertising slots or subscriptions, so the clubs and athletes get paid. While this mostly remains the case in Australia, the global value of these rights will this year surpass $US 60 billion with Amazon Prime, NBC and ESPN joining up for the rights to both men's and women's basketball. Guests: Minal Modha, Head of Sport at research firm, Ampere AnalysisBen Strauss, Sports and Media Reporter at The Washington PostDavid Rowe, Emeritus Professor of Cultural Research at the University of Western SydneyTim Burrowes, publisher of the media and marketing industry newsletter, Unmade.

According to a Pew Research survey in 2021, almost three quarters of Americans consider Fox News to be part of the mainstream media, along with familiar brands like ABC News and the Wall Street Journal. That's interesting because Fox is different in many ways. It's not only easily the most profitable cable news network and the only one trusted by most conservatives; it is also the only one whose leaders admitted, under oath, that the newsroom deliberately promoted a theory they knew to be false, namely that the 2020 Presidential election was stolen.Brian Stelter has chronicled Fox News and its impact on political discourse for years. A media reporter for the New York Times and then CNN, his unrelenting criticism of the network on his own program, Reliable Sources, may have cost him his role at CNN, but it has not shut him up. In his latest book about Fox, Network of Lies, he goes deep into the revelations about Fox that showed up in the Dominion Voting Systems libel suit and in Congress's January 6th Committee hearings. Brian and I talk about journalists' role in today's polarized politics; about Fox's promotion of election lies; about Tucker Carlson's ouster; and about the challenge we all face in finding trustworthy news in a world of disinformation. Once players started realizing what was going on around the league, there were some that were eager to get out of the building. Having gone through it, he knows exactly how it feels. Talked about the recent run of form by the Canucks. Thinks this will all come back to earth. Can understand why fans are thinking “why now” with Covid running rampant through the league. Talked about Petey and him using a different stick and how it happened. Talked about Rutherford and what he makes of him. Came across as advertised. Open to ideas, no matter where they come from. Put the terminations of Gear and Wall, because of leaking to the media, to bed. Aquilini was blatantly honest. Talked about Stan Smyl. Says that JR clearly wants him involved. Talked about potential AGM candidates. Jeff Paterson joined, fresh off the Bruce Boudreau pregame availability. Talked about how having a team day off on Monday may have saved them an outbreak. Talked about how they learned from last year when they went through an outbreak. JPat went through the morning that was for the Canucks. Said there were some odd things going on that you don’t register in the moment. Talked about how the rest of the calendar year could go with the Canucks and why the league might like to get them past the Leafs on Saturday. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Pierre LeBrun joined Matt and Blake and talked about how he got connected with Francesco Aquilini at the Board of Governors meeting. Talked about how the 3 TSN Insiders sat down and chatted with him for a pretty long time. He was really still on a high about the hiring of Jim Rutherford and walked them how it happened. They didn't get into the blame game. Said that FA reached out to JR to bounce some names off of. Likened it to the Brian Burke situation in PIT. Says it's fascinating how it all played out and why Boudreau came in before JR. Talked about FA hearing from other GM's that his team is in good shape. Talked about the two-person approach. It's so much different now than in the 70's. Talked about potential AGM's around the league. Doesn't think JR has shortened his list. Pierre thinks JR is looking for someone he can mould and be apart of the Canucks family for a long time. Patrick Johnston of Province Sports joined Matt and Blake in his regular Tuesday slot. After talking about his Covid immunity, he talked about the goal song. Not surprisingly people are feeling very nervous at the rink.
