His notable 'Rag series', how his work has evolved through the years… and the exciting works he is creating today..!  Guest Bio: Bernard Stanley Hoyes is primarily recognized as a contemporary painter whose work evolves from a highly intuitive space. He is heralded for his ability to capture spiritual realms on canvas in radiant and brilliant essence. His celebration of traditional African religion and spirituality continues to find universal appeal, exciting audiences worldwide. Oprah Winfrey, Natalie Cole, Steve Harvey, Keenan Ivory Wayans and the National Urban League are among his collectors. Selections of Hoyes' work have been featured in several television shows including the Showtime cult classic series, "Dexter." President Barack Obama has even been photographed in front of his work.Hoyes' professional artist career began at the early age of nine in his home town of Kingston, Jamaica. Bernard's mother sold his wood carvings and watercolors to visitors at the Jamaica Tourist Board to help maintain the household and support his creative efforts. Hoyes first exposure to professional art education was at the institute of Jamaica, Junior Art Centre.  At age 15 he moved to New York to live with his father, attend school and continue his art endeavors.  He attended evening classes at the Art Students League, excelling quickly. Hoyes matured as a painter and a sculptor under the apprenticeship of established artists such as Norman Lewis, Huie Lee Smith and John Torres.  A Ford Foundation Scholarship was received which allowed him to study with professional artists in a Summer Arts program at Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vermont.Hoyes received a scholarship to finish his academic studies at Vermont Academy for the next two years. There he was instrumental in the development of a formal Art Department and at graduation was given a solo exhibition at the Shepardson Center Gallery on Campus. Upon graduation Hoyes received the Frederick Stanley Art Award. He participated in the Graduate art show and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in painting and design. During the period of the late 70's, Hoyes worked intensively on his "RAG SERIES," encompassing over 150 pieces.  He formed Caribbean Cultural Institute and Caribbean Arts, Inc. to Further expose Caribbean culture to America. Hoyes has participated in numerous solo exhibitions here and abroad. He has created murals in the inner city of Los Angeles, CA. He has curated exhibitions and held a position on the board at the Museum of African American Art in Los Angeles and won awards of Excellence for his famous “Revival Series,” nationally and internationally. Since 2013 Hoyes has made his Studio in the Desert his permanent resident. Syncona Mesa, has for 25 years his Artistic Sanctuary, now it has a new Chapter. Coach Patrice Days shares his journey from growing up in Baltimore to moving multiple times, coaching at multiple schools at multiple levels. After cutting his teeth at New Orleans he moved to Charlotte where he was their Director of Player Development. Despite being at the NCAA DI level he decided to move to Florida and coach high school basketball. He coached at Arlington Country Day School and helped turn them into a national powerhouse before moving on to Vermont Academy. Coach Days would get his first Assistant Coach position at the NCAA level when Joe Golding hired at Abilene Christian, from there he moved onto Wright State, and then Southern Utah. Cliff Ellis hired him to his coaching staff at Coastal Carolina where they advanced to two postseason tournaments in four seasons. Coach Days talks about working for a legend, and what made him decide to become an Assistant Coach at East Tennessee State after they'd been getting bad press as of late.

Coach Matt Elkin shares his coaching journey. In October 2020 he was hired as the DOBO for Yale Men's Basketball. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2014, during the 2011-12 season he served as a student manager for the UW men’s basketball team. The Badgers finished 27-10 overall and reached the Sweet 16 of the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Coach Elkin also served as Head Manager and Student Assistant for two seasons at Edgewood College (NCAA DIII) where he helped the Eagles reach the NACC Championship in 2014. He earned his Master’s degree from Northeastern in 2016, where Coach Elkin served as the Graduate Manager for the men’s basketball team. In his first year, the Huskies posted a 23-12 record, captured the CAA Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Coach Elkin spent two seasons as an Assistant Coach and teacher at Vermont Academy in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC). While at VA, he helped mentor 13 student athletes who went on to play Division I college basketball, including McDonald’s All-American Simi Shittu, currently playing with the Windy City Bulls of the NBA G League, and first team All-ACC selection Jordan Nwora. After Vermont Academy he moved to California and was an Assistant Coach at the Windward School in Los Angeles. In his two seasons, Windward posted a 53-15 overall record, made back-to-back Division I state tournament appearances and captured the 2020 CIF Southern Section Division I championship. In addition, he served as head coach for Windward’s eighth grade boys basketball team and taught middle school physical education. During his time in Los Angeles, he also worked with West Coast Elite, one of the premier event operators and grassroots basketball programs in the nation.

In 1952 John Latchis, Fred Harris and Terry Tyler combined to build the Latchis Jump. Terry Tyler was from Dummerston and had been one of the best Class B jumpers in the country. Tyler realized there wasn't an intermediate jumping hill in the Brattleboro area. The high school team had to travel to Dummerston or Vermont Academy to practice jumping. Harris Hill was a 70 meter jump that was too difficult for those attempting to learn the sport. Tyler believed a jumping hill near the school was needed in order to develop young jumpers. It should be small enough so the novice jumpers could learn proper techniques and large enough for experienced jumpers to perfect their style. Dave Lane is a jumper from the 1960's. What is a post-grad year? And why would a student athlete choose to take this path? Today we discuss what the benefits are of an athlete taking an extra year to prepare for college and what the potential upside can be. Alex Popp (pronounced Pope) is in his fifth season as Head Coach of Men's Basketball at Vermont Academy. During Popp's time at the Academy, the program has matriculated student-athletes to Harvard, UChicago, Vanderbilt, Butler, Tufts, Arizona, Colby, Louisville, Carnegie Mellon and many more. In 2018, Coach Popp's program produced an NBA player (Bruce Brown, class of 2016 of VA) and a McDonald's All-American (Simisola Shittu, class of 2018 of VA, now at Vanderbilt). Under Popp's tenure in 2016, the Wildcats won the prestigious New England Prep School Championship, and he was named New England Coach of the Year. Since 2015, Popp has sent 25 student-athletes to play NCAA college basketball.

She also worked for the Antena 1 TV station in Bucharest as an investigative journalist and producer of over fifty TV documentaries and investigations on a show similar to 60 Minutes. In the United States, Maria received her Masters of Education, Curriculum, and Assessment from the Union Institute and University, Cincinnati, OH, in June 2009. She has been featured many times in the media as a model teacher and was named a finalist for Vermont Teacher of the Year in 2011 including the 2014 Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering Teacher of the Year. Also, she is also the recipient of the 2014 Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation, Educator of Distinction Award for "exemplary dedication to the field of education," an award she treasures the most is awarded to only one teacher per state based on students' performances. She was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering in 2014 and was the state delegate to national and international science fairs in her last two years of profession. She is now a STEM consultant in New York State and presents workshops at several colleges. Her real-life stories have been giving people hope: helping free them from the bondage of shame, secrets and addictions; inspiring them to be authentic, to dream big and risk living the life they were meant to live.
