This week we talk about songs and albums by artists that the artists themselves have tried to lock away and bury! This is the continuation of our series that explores what happened when bands that had success in the 80s attempted to follow trends and remain relevant in the 1990s. Listen in as we discuss the varying degrees to which this worked, or where we had to ask, “What were they thinking?”What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This time around we are bringing you the most lost of the lost. The decade of the 90s was such a polarizing time for older bands that were still trying to remain relevant. Options for 80s hard rock and glam metal bands: get heavier, go alternative or grunge, go industrial, re-brand, or stay the course…Songs this week include:Freak Of Nature – “Enemy” from Gathering Of Freaks (1994)Winger – “Junkyard Dog (Tears On Stone)” from Pull (1993)Slaughter – “American Pie” from Revolution (1997)The Newlydeads – “Free Weapons” from The Newlydeads (1997)Scorpions – “Mysterious” from Eye II Eye (1999)Europe – “All Or Nothing” from Prisoners In Paradise (1991)Chris Gaines – “White Flag” from Garth Brooks in… The Life Of Chris Gaines (1999) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/

Episode 42 of Season 5 kicked off at 19h00 on 20 Oct 2022.  The show was live on Rebel Rock Radio and made up for last week's disaster after the lightning strike.  Apologies again for that little abortion, it's nice to be back in control and with a new inverter to keep the load shedding at bay.  The show kicked off with Accept and a track called “What's Done is Done' off The Rise of Chaos.  Mark Tornillo on vocals and Wolf Hoffman on lead guitar. Then we took a listen to a band that was new to me called Dead City Ruins and a track called 'Preacher'.  They've got four albums out and they hail from Australia.  The classic rock flag flew for a while while we heard from Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and ACDC before chilling to Audioslave with ‘Like a Stone' and then ‘Rats' from Pearl Jam.  'Like a Stone' hit a billion YouTube views this week so that was worth celebrating.  We also checked out KISS with the seldom-played 'Do You Love Me'.  This was off Kiss Alive IV and has Peter Criss on drums and Tommy Thayer on guitar, check out the interview I did with Tommy Thayer in the podcast list on 28 Nov 2019.   What a nice guy.    The Johnny Kongos classic 'Tokoloshe Man', recorded back in 1971, sounded great and stands up well as did another South African classic from a band called Big Sky.  We got into the heavier stuff with Motorhead and UFO and from there it was guitar time and a track from White Lion called 'Fight To Survive' featuring the amazing Vito Bratta on guitar.  The story of Mike Slammer's involvement with Warrant and Joey Allen, was briefly covered then we got into some metal courtesy of Claymorean and South Africa's own Infanteria out of Cape Town and some more local music with Jasper Dan and Black Bone Nation.  This week the Punk came from the USA in the form of Green Day with 'Welcome to Paradise' off 1991's Kerplunk.  We also heard a track, relevant to the whole world right now called "The Economy Is Suffering' by  Anti-Flag.  Dave Hause with his track 'Bearing Down' off Kick was a highlight for me and is pretty deep.  In This Moment showed us all how good a rave could be if Maria Brink was running the show and we went heavy again with Parkway Drive and Megadeth.  the show closed with Lamb of God and a track called 'Ditch' off their new album Omens.  I said that we would play out with Slipknot but then changed my mind and did the LOG instead.    Artists featured:  Accept, Cancer Bats, Dead City Ruins, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ACDC, Black Label Society, Joe Bonamassa, Audioslave, Pearl Jam, Godsmack, KISS, Judas Priest, Johnny Kongos, Big Sky, Motörhead, Warrant, Anti-Flag, Green Day, Claymorean, Infanteria, Black Bone Nation, Jasper Dan, Crowded House, Dave Hause, In This Moment, Marilyn Manson, Parkway Drive, Megadeth, Tribute To Leslie West, Wonderboom, UK Subs, My Chemical Romance, Lamb of GodThe Story of Rock and Roll. We're back this week for another Best & Worst episode; this time we're tackling the catalog of White Lion.White Lion, formed in New York in the early 1980's, featured all the ingredients that a band needed to propel them to stardom. Led by Danish-born front man Mike Tramp and the virtuosity of guitarist Vito Bratta, the band had the hooks, mind-bending guitar solos, and looks that were required to make it big in the 1980's.White Lion would start to build a following in the New York and New Jersey areas culminating with the release of 1985's debut album 'Fight to Survive.' After dealing with record company politics that would cause the album to be released overseas first before it was available in America, the band failed to hit it big but would garner attention in the rock press. With 1987's sophomore release 'Pride,' the band hit pay dirt. Produced by the legendary Michael Wagener, the album was replete with arena rock tunes that seemed a perfect fit for radio play. Once the single for 'Wait' hit MTV, the band's profile rose quickly. The release of power ballad 'When the Children Cry' catapulted the band to new heights.1989's 'Big Game' album saw the band team up with Wagener again to continued success. The single 'Little Fighter' did well at radio and also showed listeners that White Lion wasn't going to shy away from heavy subject-matter. Other songs like 'If My Mind is Evil' and 'Cry for Freedom' cemented that point. The juxtaposition of the bands' image combined with their willingness to break out of the 'party-rock' trend of lyrical content certainly was a contrast to other bands of the day.By 1991, the tides of popular rock music were shifting, making the release of 'Mane Attraction' a possible victim of circumstance. The album is every bit as eclectic as it's predecessor; but was it to a fault? We talk about all of these releases this week and share our thoughts on the songs, the playing, the direction of the band and more. We also pick our favorite and least-favorite song from each album. We hope you enjoy The Best & Worst of White Lion and SHARE with a friend!Decibel Geek is a proud member of the Pantheon Podcasts family of shows.Contact Us!Rate, Review, and Subscribe in iTunesJoin the Facebook Fan PageFollow on TwitterFollow on InstagramE-mail UsSubscribe to our Youtube channel!Support Us!Buy a T-Shirt!Donate to the show!Stream Us!Stitcher RadioSpreakerTuneInBecome a VIP Subscriber!Click HERE for more info!Comment BelowDirect Download

In this lesson, Dan and I return to take a look at how to improve your creative improvisations and what that journey looks like on the guitar. The focus of this lesson, using a backing track we recently did another lesson with, is how having some predetermined themes to use in your solo and a plan can help you to come up with ideas and interest as you improvise. As we play around with improvisation Dan gives me some tips and a strategy following a structured approach to coming up with ideas. We use octaves, blues licks and then Dan delves into a couple of ideas: First he highlights the importance of being relaxed and not tense; second we take a look at three note per string pentatonic licks and referencing lots of different players Dan demonstrates how you can delve deeply into one idea to explore the theme fully. 00:00:56 Reference to That Pedal Show and our last episode 00:01:36 Introduction - how do we mix our licks up to make them not feel too samey? 00:02:11 Fancy Fusion Backing Track in B minor | #SZBT 205: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZUCq_UlqzI 00:02:34 The focus for today's lesson is making your licks stand out - one idea leading to the next and the next... 00:03:16 Breaking solos into rigid structures 00:03:39 EG - Ritchie Samboura's solo from Dead or Alive 00:04:19 Analysing the ideas behind the parts of this solo, e.g. octaves, little blues lick, pinched harmonics, country blues rock lick, chugging chords 00:08:43 First soloing over the backing track 00:12:00 Guthrie Govan interview 00:13:34 How important it is to have goals and visualise where you want to be 00:17:55 Learn something different - have a bit of surprise left in your life 00:19:18 Dan's example of how beginners approach improvisation 00:20:01 1) isolating the ocatave theme and idea 00:21:09 2) by landing here on the fretboard you're ready for the blues lick 00:21:32 Be bold and not scared of the improvisation 00:23:53 Two tips to help when you're not sure: leave a note to hang or leave space 00:29:33 Second improvisation, focussing on relaxing and themed ideas 00:35:00 Running with weights: e.g. go up the whole scale using octaves 00:36:23 using octaves 00:36:51 Foo Fighters idea - fattening up a melody 00:37:01 Steve Vai - slipping up to the octaves, slide then octave 00:38:59 The pentatonic thing: with 3 note per string patterns 00:40:26 Second three note per string pentatonics 00:42:37 three notes on one string, then one note 00:43:10 Joel Hoekstra thing - 00:47:12 Podcast episode idea and call to action - get in touch if you want this 00:48:02 Shawn Lane lick 00:52:28 Some advice about digging deep into ideas 00:53:17 Country bends 00:54:19 Guthrie Govan idea from waves - arpeggiating with string skipping 00:55:37 Arpeggiating a Bm chord 00:58:05 Dan using the Guthrie Govan idea to solo over the backing track 00:59:05 Mixing in the Vito Bratta idea of adding tapped notes 01:01:12 Interesting video by Rick Graham - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsEHi1wykkc&feature=youtu.be 01:04:57 Final jam over the backing track

Greg talks about Jack Star and how that project came about. He spends some time talking about the White Lion days, to include saying he still keeps in touch with Mike Tramp and just recently saw Vito Bratta. Conversation with Mike Tramp - Ep 136

It's been 27 years since White Lion broke through into the public consciousness with 1987's 'Pride' album. Featuring a solid rhythm section of bassist James Lomenzo and drummer Greg D'Angelo joining virtuoso guitarist Vito Bratta, the band was fronted by a platinum blonde singer that not only had the right look for the era but also had a damn good singing voice that would reverberate through arenas across the world during the late 80's glam rock takeover. That singer is Mike Tramp.   The Danish-born front man fronted White Lion through a very successful run of albums from the previously-mentioned 'Pride' album through 1991's 'Mane Attraction.' The Seattle grunge movement eventually commanded a bigger spotlight and bands of White Lion's ilk were pushed aside; but Mike Tramp perservered, going on to form Freak of Nature and then release eight solo albums with 2013's 'Cobblestone Street ' being his most recent.   Mike Tramp has been on a US tour in 2014. Aided by only his guitar and a son he's been reconnecting with, Tramp is bringing an intimate experience for fans that includes White Lion classics and solo selections. Mike was nice enough to spend some time during his stop at the Rutledge in Nashville, TN talking to Aaron Camaro about the tour, the old days, and what it was like to be a part of the shifting sands of the early 1990's. Also included is a chat with two Mike Tramp die-hard fans about their expectations for the show as well as some of their favorite tracks from Tramp and White Lion.   The Decibel Geek podcast would like to thank The Rutledge LMV for their help in facilitating this interview.   Buy Music!   White Lion Mike Tramp   More Mike Tramp!   Official Website Facebok Fan Page  Twitter Page   Contact Us!   Rate, Review, and Subscribe in iTunes Join the Facebook Fan Page Follow on Twitter Follow on Instagram E-mail Us Call us on the Hotline!
