Interview by Kris PetersWednesday 13 is arguably one of the hardest-working musicians out there. From his solo project to celebration tours featuring Murderdolls songs, Wednesday not only lives the excesses of rock and roll debauchery; he sets the bar as well. Each of his musical undertakings, including Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 as well as Murderdolls and Wednesday 13, have the same menacing undertones of gore, horror and theatrics, but despite the obvious similarities, Wednesday 13 is much more than a one-trick pony.Blending the above elements with punk, humour and a ghostly sense of the macabre, Wednesday 13 has his roots deeply embedded in hard rock but transcends the barriers of a plethora of styles and genres that combine to make his music a necessary evil in a world growing increasingly sterile.2022's Horrifier was met with widespread media and public adulation, but these two things have never mattered when it comes to Wednesday's musical output. It is more about the sense of ambivalence and the irresistible thread that binds everything together that keeps the fire in Wednesday's cauldron burning.Such is his contribution to music that Wednesday could easily be forgiven for playing it safe with each new album cycle, but in true Wednesday 13 style, safe was the furthest thing on his mind with his new album Mid Death Crisis, which will be unleashed on April 25.More a step back into the things and a time that gave birth to Wednesday's musical psyche, Mid Death Crisis benefits from production by Alex Kane (Life, Sex & Death, Enuff Z'Nuff, Antiproduct) and a mix courtesy of Steve Evetts (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Prong, DevilDriver) that devilishly encapsulates the musical strengths of both while remaining quintessentially the afterbirth of Wednesday 13.Wednesday spent some time with HEAVY to discuss the album in greater detail. We started by asking if he is confident heading into the album release date."Very confident," he replied without hesitation. "With my last few albums I put out, I didn't know if the audience was going to like it as much as I did. And when I was experimenting from albums like Condolences and Necrophaze and all those records, I look back now and those are the experimental records because I did some different things with them. And those were ones I took some chances with, and I wasn't sure if the audience would like them. But they did. This is the one record where I feel pretty confident that they're going to like it. I know it's hit all the bases with what I was trying to go for."The album is widely touted as a return to Wednesday 13's musical roots, an opinion we put to the man himself."I think so," he measured. "After COVID and everything, I had a little time to look back on my career and 20 years of doing Wednesday 13. And I just kind of looked at the whole career and went, well, what do you like best of all this? I started looking at it all, and I went, well, where I started was the most honest and real place for me. And that seemed natural. And I kind of went back to that look, and I went back to that sound, and it was easy to do. It just felt right, and this is more of a hard rock record than it is a metal record, but it's not just like I tried to imitate my first record or anything. It's just in the same spirit, and I feel good about it, like I did on that first record."In the full interview, Wednesday 13 described Mid Death Crisis as an energetic experience, carefully structured to reflect a live performance, and emphasized that sonically it encapsulates his career and aligns with fan expectations. He highlighted the song When the Devil Commands as the lead single, crafted to appeal to both existing fans and new listeners, with lyrics inspired by his childhood experiences during the Satanic Panic. He discussed his songwriting philosophy, focusing on natural inspiration from classic horror and pop culture. Additionally, he spoke about his collaboration with Taime Downe, noting its significance due to his admiration for Faster Pussycat. We spoke about his song titles and where they come from, coming up with fresh sounding material the more you write, future and current tours and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Wednesday 13 zoomed in to talk about his forthcoming new album "Mid Death Crisis" (out 4/25/25) and his "There's No Such Thing As Monsters" tour coming to the Glasshouse in Pomona on Saturday, March 22. Here's what we talked about: New album "Mid Death Crisis" (0-3) "No Apologies" with Taime Downe (3-7) Murderdolls influence on new album (7-9) 3/22/25 at the Glasshouse 20th anniversary tour (9-12) Final Ozzfest 2018 and the Final Show (12-end)
Wednesday 13 starts us up on this episode. His new album, Mid Death Crisis, drops on April 25th. I had to get 13 on the show for a few reasons, including that he's a huge horror movie fan like myself. Yes, we did talk a little horror. I also wanted him to talk about the new album and tour. The first single, "When The Devil Commands" is a crunchy horror-rock shredder. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album, which includes a track he did with Faster Pussycat's Taime Downe. He also told me about the fire that broke out while filming another video. He may have saved a ton of acreage from burning a month ago. Up next, it's Jake and Joe from the Autumn Kings. The boys from southern Ontario have come a long way in the 10 years since forming and are hitting the road for shows in Europe next week! They talk about the band, their musical influences, the biggest rock stars they've met and lots more. This was also a fun conversation! I can't wait to see them when they play a show closer to here in the future. Thanks for listening!
This week we talk about songs and albums by artists that the artists themselves have tried to lock away and bury! This is the continuation of our series that explores what happened when bands that had success in the 80s attempted to follow trends and remain relevant in the 1990s. Listen in as we discuss the varying degrees to which this worked, or where we had to ask, “What were they thinking?”What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This time around we are bringing you the most lost of the lost. The decade of the 90s was such a polarizing time for older bands that were still trying to remain relevant. Options for 80s hard rock and glam metal bands: get heavier, go alternative or grunge, go industrial, re-brand, or stay the course…Songs this week include:Freak Of Nature – “Enemy” from Gathering Of Freaks (1994)Winger – “Junkyard Dog (Tears On Stone)” from Pull (1993)Slaughter – “American Pie” from Revolution (1997)The Newlydeads – “Free Weapons” from The Newlydeads (1997)Scorpions – “Mysterious” from Eye II Eye (1999)Europe – “All Or Nothing” from Prisoners In Paradise (1991)Chris Gaines – “White Flag” from Garth Brooks in… The Life Of Chris Gaines (1999) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/

Faster Pussycat emerged from the wild Sunset Strip scene of the 80s, which gave birth to legendary bands such as Quiet Riot, Van Halen, and Ratt. The band introduced a more intense dose of glam and sleaze, which helped them secure a major label deal alongside their peers Guns N' Roses and L.A. Guns. Taime Downe, a Seattle native, fronted the band, and their debut album showcased a bluesy, pop-glam sound similar to The Rolling Stones and Hanoi Rocks. This post is public so feel free to share it.Downe teamed up with Brent Muscat (guitar), Greg Steele (guitar), Eric Stacy (bass), and Mark Michals (drums) to work with producer Ric Browde and craft a classic album that became a staple of the era. The album, released on Elektra Records, includes MTV favorites like “Bathroom Wall” and “Don't Change That Song,”. As Faster Pussycat embarked on the first tour, they supported a diverse range of artists, from Alice Cooper to David Lee Roth to Motorhead, honing their versatility and undeniable stage presence. Our deep dive into Faster Pussycat's self-titled debut on Dig Me Out reveals the highs and lows of an album that's as synonymous with the Sunset Strip's glam metal scene as teased hair and leather pants. We explore the tracks that define, delight, and sometimes divide, offering listeners a comprehensive look at an album that continues to resonate. In our exploration, we highlight the album's key tracks, noting "Bathroom Wall" and "Don't Change That Song" for their enduring appeal and MTV staple status, while "Babylon" stands out as an innovative yet ambivalent rap-rock hybrid. Despite its varied reception, the album embodies the rebellious spirit, chaotic nightlife, and unfiltered fun that marked rock 'n' roll's golden era on the Sunset Strip.Wrapping up the episode, special guest Sebastian Bach drops in to recommend an album for our review, adding another layer of rock authority to our discussion. Join us as we revisit this iconic slice of rock 'n' roll history, celebrating the sleaze, glam, and raw energy that defines an unforgettable decade in music. Before Riki Rachtman hosted Headbangers Ball on MTV He opened one of rock n roll's most notorious club CATHOUSE. It all started with an idea when Riki and his roomate Taime Downe ( Faster Pussycat) were drunk and well the rest is history and in this episode you will here how Riki & Taime met and what led top opening a haven for Raunch n roll, sleaze and debauchery GET CATHOUSE MERCH at www.cathousehollywood.com
Time to travel back to a more innocent time. OK it was not a more innocent time not even close. It was down right decadent and sleazy and most of that rock n roll decadence went down at the Cathouse Rock Club. Even though the Cathouse has been closed for decades there are still legendary stories that resyrface time to time. The Cathouse opened in 1986 by Riki Rachtman ( Headbangers Ball ) & Taime Downe ( Faster Pussycat) It was not opened as a money maker. It was a way Riki & Taime could get free drinks and meet strippers. Remember they were young and it was the 80's. How did the duo of decadence even meet. What does the term "Bald men behind bars" even mean. Riki takes you back and revists a nostalgic background of pop culture as well as rock history GUESTS: Riki Rachtman, Taime Downe, Keith Cooper, Trina Ortegon Catch Riki Rachtman on tour with his show ONE FOOT IN THE GUTTER for ticket info go to cathousehollywood.com This show is sponsored by your new favorite coffee CATHOUSECOFFEE go to www.cathousecoffee.com use code CHP get 10% off

Taime DowneHis snarling tales of lipstick junkies and runaways put Faster Pussycat singer Taime Downe at the top of the sleaze-rock heap. He joins us to discuss new Faster Pussycat music, an in-the-works book, his cold-turkey sobriety and why his earliest trip to a recording studio was all about the “banging room.” Created and Produced by Jared Tuten
The Cathouse is rock n roll's version of Studio 54. Sleaze and Debauchery. A Heavy Metal heaven where anything could and did happen. The club was opened by Riki Rachtman best known as the host of MTV's Headbangers Ball and his room mate Taime Down vocalist of the band Faster Pussycat. There wouldn't have been a Cathouse without Riki & Taime but how did the 2 meet. Hear the true story from the actual conspirators Riki & Taime It's 1986 BC before Cathouse Catch Riki Rachtman in his one man show "One Foot In The Gutter" For all ticket info and to get Cathouse T shirts visit Cathouse Hollywood.com
Riki Rachtman has a lot of stories. He likes to share them. When he is not on tour with his story telling show One Foot In The Gutter he is behind the mic with an updated version of the Cathouse Hollywood Podcast . True tales from rocks most decadent era. Sure Riki was the host of MTV's Headbangers Ball which featured the biggest names in Heavy Metal. OK he is a veteran of radio and TV but what about the dark seedy past. From 1986-1994. The Notorious CATHOUSE ERA The Cathouse was at the epicenter of the Hollywood Rock scene. Some of the biggest bands in rock would play unannounced shows at the Cathouse but it wasn't the performances by bands like Guns n Roses, Motorhead, Alice Cooper, Pearl Jam, Faster Pussycat, Black Crows (the list goes on) that put Cathouse on the map. It was the sleaze and debauchery, the raunch and roll. Riki opened it with his roommate Taime Downe from the band Faster Pussycat with the premise of getting free drinks and meeting girls. Riki enforced a no camera rule at the Cathouse so anything could and did happen. While authors and journalists attempt to recreate some of the legendary tales of what really happened at the Cathouse they always fall short because they weren't there. The biggest names in rock roll called Cathouse there home and the same stands for the Cathouse Hollywood Podcast. One episode might feature an artist that sold 11 million records and another might be the coat check girl because when it came right down to it. We were all rockstars. Riki Rachtman co-founded the infamous Cathouse in Hollywood with his friend Taime Downe from the band Faster Pussycat. Guns N Roses was the house band, Alice Cooper asked to play there on Halloween, Motley Crue were club fixtures, and a drunk David Bowie nearly got beat up one night by Axl Rose. The Cathouse was THE place to be in Hollywood in the late 80s and early 90s, and people lined up around the block hoping to get in! Riki shares some of those legendary stories about the club, how and why he started it, and how that success turned into a hosting gig for MTV's Headbanger's Ball. Riki also tells tales about visiting a water park with Alice In Chains, Nirvana's uncomfortably weird appearance on the Ball, and why Riki had to publicly apologize to Stone Temple Pilots! Plus, Riki just brought The Ball back, and you can see its 4-episode limited run starting this Saturday night (April 17th) at 9pm Eastern on the FREE Gimme Metal app!

When we think back to those angst filled teenage years in the early 90's when we couldn't find a fake i.d. and we still had a curfew, some of our best memories are of spending Saturday nights hanging out at a friends house, eating day old pizza and watching the Headbangers Ball on MTV. While the show started back in 1985 with an ever-rotating host, the show came into our collective consciousness during the transition from Adam Curry to this week's guest, Riki Rachtman. While Curry did an admirable job hosting the Ball, the show took on a more adventurous and fun direction when Rachtman took the reins in 1990. Riki Rachtman's profile in rock history goes back further, though, to his days as owner of The Cathouse; a famed L.A. nightspot that was frequented by rock stars of all sorts and the women that adored them. Rachtman's first on-camera appearance took place in 1988's Penelope Spheeris-directed The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years. In the movie, Rachtman is interviewed on location at the aforementioned Cathouse along with co-owner/roommate Taime Downe of Faster Pussycat. Rachtman's friendship with Guns N Roses frontman Axl Rose led to an audition at MTV as Curry was on his way out as host of Headbangers Ball. His hosting duties would last for five years (1990-1995) until Headbangers Ball was abruptly canceled with no more than a phone call to Rachtman breaking the news. In the ensuing years since Headbangers Ball, Riki Racthman has stayed active in the entertainment industry; contributing his hosting talents to such outfits as World Championship Wrestling, Los Angeles radio station KLSX, several VH1 productions, and his NASCAR-themed racing show called Racing Rocks and is heard on over 120 stations across America. Riki was gracious enough to take some time to talk to Chris this week about the crazy days of The Cathouse, the story that led to getting the Headbangers Ball hosting gig, his memories of hosting the Ball and traveling the world, his response to critics that have accused him of pushing an agenda while on MTV, and his take on where the network (and music in general) is at today. Riki also gives us details about his current 3-country/11 state trek from Mexico through America through Canada and to Sturgis on motorcycles with his long-time friend Taime Downe. As of the date of this episode's recording, Riki and co. were in Washington state and you can track their progress in real-time by clicking this link or you can receive his updates on his Twitter page. We thank Riki Rachtman for taking the time to talk to us. We hope this episode brings back as many memories for you as it did for us.
