Do you enjoy hearing stories about the songwriting process? Well….if you do, it doesn't get better than this! Legendary songwriter Jim Vallance joins me to share stories about the many classics he helped write!! What was the original title for the song “Summer of ‘69”? Is it really about the sexual position? What famous band was “Run To You” actually written for? What was it like recording with Tina Turner? What Aerosmith song did Jim think Steven “got wrong”? What songs was Jim a ghosts bassist on? What was it like writing a few songs for KISS? These are just some of the great stories you will hear on this episode. Quite honestly this one was one of my favorite guests I've ever had on my show!

Concert photographer Dee Lippingwell's very first concert was a Pink Floyd show in Vancouver back in 1973. Over a 50 year career she photographed some of rock's royalty: The Rolling Stones, Queen, Aerosmith, David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Eric Clapton, KISS, Van Halen and many more. Her first book, “The Best Seat in the House,” was followed by the self-published “First Three Songs… No Flash,” and Dee and Red sat down to talk about her new book. Dee was inducted into the BC Country Music Association's Hall of Fame in 2011, an honour in part based on her extensive work with the Merritt Mountain Music Festival. “I don't think I was ever tired of rock and roll, I love rock and roll,” Dee said, “but country music opened my eyes to other music out there.” Her photos of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Dwight Yoakam, Tim McGraw, Randy Travis, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban and other country stars were documented in her third book, 2021's “Memories From the Mountain”. Dee Lippingwell died May 9 after a battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband Paul, sons Marc and Chris, grandchildren Shauna and Tyler, and her brother David. Bryan Adams' writing partner Jim Vallance told music trade magazine Billboard Canada, "If you were lucky enough to live a hundred years, you wouldn't come across a lovelier, more classy, more talented, more humble person than Dee Lippingwell." We at The Wolf love hard rock, heavy metal, prog rock, classic rock and 80s MTV. While Bryan Adams may match a couple of those categories, we can't say that he was one of our very favorites. Because we were bombarded with him from 1983-86 on US radio and MTV and because girls seemed to like him (maybe his music too), he just didn't do it for us. However, his 5th album released in 1984, Reckless, boasts hit after hit like Heaven, Summer of '69, Run To You, Somebody, and It's Only Love. So as it turns 40 on November 5, we thought it would be a good idea to bring in friend to the show and Canadian rock guru Chris from My Rock N Roll Heaven to give us his perspective. 1984 not only saw the release of Reckless but the launch of Canadian MTV-type station Much Music which not only played videos but had to play a certain percentage of Canadian artists. That helped propel the album to become the first diamond selling album (1,000,000 in sales for Canada) in Canada by a Canadian artist. Aided in the songwriting by Jim Vallance and backed up on guitar by long time collaborator Keith Scott, Bryan had huge success in his home country, in the US and around the globe. The videos all had a theme and featured the same actor (Lysette Anthony) which helped create an image for Adams in the US. We go track x track and enlist Chris's Canadian perspective to see why this album was so popular and how it stands the test of time. Jim shares stories from his youth, where his passion for music was ignited by The Beatles, and talks about his early days with the band Prism. We explore his fascinating song writing process and hear unforgettable stories from his collaborations with iconic artists like Aerosmith, KISS, and Heart. Jim gives us the inside scoop on how Heart's smash hit "What About Love?" came to be and his long time partnership with Bryan Adams, including the creation of timeless classics like "Summer of 69." Also this week, Jamie and Tom dive into the chaos of everyday life, starting with the infamous phrase "traffic is a nightmare" – but do we really dream about it? Tom hilariously compares Peppa Pig to the Demon Headmaster, and the boys dissect the brand new 'Heinz Pickled Onion Monster Munch Mayonnaise.' Spoiler alert: of course Jamie bought it! Tom also tells us about his 'headphone milk bottle lid trick' that literally no one saw coming. The lads catch up on their week, including Jamie's experience taking his son to his first-ever gig—Cannibal Corpse, no less—and Tom updates us on his undefeated streak in his NFL fantasy football league. As always, there's plenty of audience interaction. This week, Jamie's audience participation challenge asks you to answer: what song would you delete from existence? Plus, Tom brings more laughs with his collection of funny finds from around the internet in Tom's Journal. Unfortunately, there are no Callum's Teachings this week—but don't worry, the laughs keep coming! With an unprecedented four Juno awards for songwriter of the year, Jim Vallance is one of Canada's pre-eminent songwriters and the creative force behind top tracks for artists like Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Joe Cocker and Glass Tiger. He played drums with the Vancouver band Prism, and wrote their first single, Spaceship Superstar (which was played on the Discovery Space Shuttle). After touring with Prism, he became a session musician before a chance meeting with 18-year-old Bryan Adams determined his songwriting career direction. The two began a fruitful decades-long songwriting collaboration. Adams's album, Cuts Like a Knife, yielded three hit singles co-written with Vallance, and reached platinum. The follow-up album Reckless cemented the Vallance-Adams writing partnership in the annals of rock music. No. 1 on the Canadian and U.S. album charts, it sold five times platinum, with six Vallance co-writes in the Top 15, including the duo's first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, Heaven; and the No. 1 Mainstream Rock tracks Run To You and Somebody. Vallance concentrated on songwriting, penning a non-stop stream of hit rock ballads, including the now-famous chart-topping charity single Tears Are Not Enough, a collaboration with Adams and fellow Canadian producer David Foster. Jim's creative talent has benefitted top international acts like Pat Benatar, Roger Daltry, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Joan Jett, The Go-Go's, Rick Springfield, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Anne Murray, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Chilliwack, Loverboy, Toronto, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, KISS and The Scorpions. Vallance went on to collaborate with Adams on songs for the Broadway show Pretty Woman: The Musical. He has served on the boards of SOCAN, the Songwriters Association of Canada, and FACTOR, is a member of the Order of Canada, and boasts 22 SOCAN Classic awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Joe Matera is a returning guest to the podcast. Joe has a brand new book titled Louder Than Words: Beyond The Backstage Pass. This is a follow-up to 2021's Backstage Pass: The Grit and the Glamour. Joe holds a unique position as a music journalist who is also a professional musician. It's allowed him access to areas where music journalists aren't able to.In this, his second book, Joe traces his childhood influences and meets the musicians who changed his life from heroes such as Janne Schaffer, who played on ABBA's studio albums, to Gerry Rafferty (the genius behind ‘Baker Street') and international superstar Bryan Adams and his songwriting partner Jim Vallance. Louder Than Words also delves into the often torturous touring life of a musician, with life on the road often leading to band break-ups or mental breakdowns. Joe also examines the impact of MTV on a generation of musicians, particularly one video by rising rock star Billy Squier that's said to have ruined his career. In addition to his solo music career as a singer/songwriter/guitarist, Joe Matera has written for international music magazines like Guitar Player, Guitar World, Record Collector, and Goldmine. He also writes a popular newspaper music column for the Shepparton News. His list of interviewees includes Metallica, Queen, Blondie, Bon Jovi, KISS, and Black Sabbath, to name just a few.Purchase a copy of Louder Than Words: Beyond The Backstage Pass JoeMatera.com---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe

EX57 - Bryan Adams - A Great Canadian Musical Export - Cuts Like a Knife and Everything I Do, I Do it For You Bryan Adams, in full Bryan Guy Adams, (born November 5, 1959, Kingston, Ontario, Canada), Canadian rock singer-songwriter, photographer, and social activist whose hit albums Cuts Like a Knife (1983) and Reckless (1984) made him one of the most popular and successful recording artists of the 1980s. Adams was musically talented at an early age and taught himself how to play guitar. His father served in the Canadian army, was a UN peacekeeping observer, and served as a diplomat, necessitating many relocations for the family. When his parents divorced, he lived with his mother just north of Vancouver, British Columbia. At age 16, he dropped out of high school, ready to pursue a full-time career as a musician, having already performed as lead vocalist for Canadian glam-rock band Sweeney Todd. He spent time working in a recording studio, performing on tours, and recording music for Sweeney Todd's album If Wishes Were Horses (1977). Shortly after the recording's release, Adams was introduced to Jim Vallance, a Canadian musician, songwriter, and producer. Vallance recognized Adams's ability but also saw the need for further vocal training. With Vallance's help, it was not long before Adams established a powerful, distinct sound, one compared to that of Rod Stewart, Paul Rodgers, and Steve Marriott. This week on Finding Your Bliss, Life Coach and Bliss Expert Judy Librach is joined by songwriter Jim Vallance! Jim Vallance is a musician, arranger, producer and songwriter whose credits include Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Tom Jones, Heart, Alice Cooper, Anne Murray, Ozzy Osbourne, Tina Turner, Joan Jett and hundreds of other recording artists. When you look up Jim Vallance, there is no shortage of superstars literally singing his praises. Steven Tyler has called him
Aerosmith is a band in two acts. They were a highly successful group in the 70's, but arguments and drugs left the band a shade of its former self by 1980. A second chance was presented when the crossover collaboration between Aerosmith and Run-D.M.C. on "Walk this Way" became a number 4 US hit in 1986. The bad went into drug rehab at the insistence of manager Tim Collins, and had a major hit with their ninth studio album "Permanent Vacation."Aerosmith demonstrated that their second act was not just a fluke with their tenth studio album, Pump, which was even more successful than Permanent Vacation. This was a significant comeback, re-establishing the band as one of rock's premier acts. The album was polished and energetic, combining a gritty hard rock sound with pop sensibilities. The album was not only a commercial success, peaking at number 5 on the US charts and being certified 7x platinum by 1995, but was also a critical success, landing Aerosmith their first Grammy for "Janie's Got a Gun." Pump was the fourth best-selling album of the year 1990.The band lineup for this album had Steven Tyler on vocals, keyboards, and harmonica, Joe Perry on guitar and backing vocals, Brad Whitford on guitar, Tom Hamiilton on bass, and Joey Kramer on drums. Guitarist Brad Whitford explained the album title on a 1989 MTV special by saying "now that we're off drugs, we're all pumped up." John Lynch brings us this stellar rock and pop sensation this week. Water Song/Janie's Got a GunA 10-second instrumental called "Water Song" precedes the song written by Steven Tyler and Tom Hamilton. The second single from the album went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It describes the revenge of a young woman for the childhood abuse she experienced. Aerosmith won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for this song.Dulcimer Stomp/The Other SideAnother song with a brief instrumental lead-in, this was the fourth single released from the album. It was written by Jim Vallance and Steven Tyler, with Holland-Dozier-Holland receiving songwriting credit after threatening to file suit over similarities between this and their song "Standing in the Shadows of Love." The lyrics are about a turbulent relationship, with the singer wanting to get past the emotional roller-coaster. Monkey on My BackIt is difficult to find a deep cut on this album, but this is one that was not released as a single. Tyler and Perry wrote this track about the band's struggles with addiction. It was the first song that Tyler and Perry wrote for the album, and it was composed in November 1988 prior to the end of their Permanent Vacation tour.Going Down/Love In an ElevatorA double entendre-laden skit leads in this double entendre-laden song. Tyler and Perry wrote this piece, and it was inspired by an actual experience Steven Tyler had where he was making out with a woman in an elevator and the doors opened. It was nominated for a Grammy in 1990 for Best Hard Rock Performance, but Aerosmith lost out to Living Colour on that one. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television music performance and dance program “American Bandstand” Dick Clark's music show which premiered in March 1952 had its final show on October 7, 1989. STAFF PICKS:Sowing the Seeds of Love by Tears for FearsBruce brings us a Beatles-esque song from the third Tears for Fears album, "Seeds of Love." It was written by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, and hit number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, their fourth and final entry into the top 10. Orzabal considers it to be the most overtly political song Tears for Fears had written at the time. Big Talk by WarrantRob's staff pick is a rocking tune from glam metal band Warrant's first album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich." This third single from the album made it to number 30 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, though it only made it to number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went to number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.Pictures of Matchstick Men by Camper Van Beethoven Wayne brings us a cover of the first hit single by Status Quo, released in 1968. This rendition combines elements of pop, ska, punk, folks, alternative, and country. the "Matchstick men" reference is to the paintings of L.S. Lowry, and English painter who depicted Salford, Manchester, and other industrial scenes in his works. It's Not Enough by StarshipLynch's staff pick is the second single released off Starship's third album, the first album after Grace Slick left the band. It went to number 12 on the Billboard charts, the final top 40 hit for the band. This is the sound that most typified the produced sound of the late 80's. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Flying In a Blue Dream by the Joe SatrianiThe title track to Satriani's third studio album closes out this week's podcast.

One of the biggest hits on London's West End is Jim Vallance and Bryan Adams' adaptation of 'Pretty Woman', currently running at the Savoy Theatre. We were very fortunate to be joined by two of the show's stars: Aimie Atkinson who plays Vivian Ward and Rachael Wooding who plays Kit De Luca. The musical is based on the 1990 Gary Marshall film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Prior to starring in the show, Aimie and Rachael had already experienced great success in other popular West End shows. It has been a great delight for musical lovers to see two sensational actresses share the stage together in this lavish production of Pretty Woman. In this special interview, Aimie Atkinson and Rachael Wooding both share insights into why the story of Pretty Woman has continued to resonate with audiences throughout the years as well as why it feels so right to have this story adapted into a musical. With both Aimie and Rachael also having great profiles in the industry, they also share their thoughts on celebrity culture and their candid thoughts about the future of stage door fan interactions. We also get to hear them reflect on the current state of the musical theatre industry with the West End filling up with more jukebox musicals and shows adapted from films. It's an intriguing listen and we hope it encourages you to see the show too.Pretty Woman the Musical is currently running till 4 September 2022 and tickets are on sale now from the Savoy Theatre box office.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Will Van Dyke over Zoom video! An established musician in the theatrical world of New York City, VAN DYKE was looking for collaborators when an email from lyricist and playwright Jeff Talbott appeared in his inbox. Like Elton John finding Bernie Taupin at the right moment, these two paths crossing would launch a strong and lasting songwriting partnership that culminates in the release of VAN DYKE's debut solo EP, THE MAYOR. At 22, WILL hit the road with the first National Tour of Wicked playing the piano. After a brief stint on a National Tour of Grease starring Taylor Hicks, he landed his first Broadway gig, The Addams Family. Jumping from The Addams Family to Rent led him to Kinky Boots, where he was part of the music team with Cyndi Lauper. The relationships built on Kinky Boots led to the musical version of Pretty Woman and working with Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. Currently, VAN DYKE is the music supervisor of Little Shop of Horrors, for which he also served as orchestrator and arranger. He was nominated for a Grammy® Award in 2020 for his work on the Little Shop of Horrors cast recording. We want to hear from you! In this solo episode, Mark shares an article that he'd had published in the summer of 2009 when he was asked to make a prediction about something that likely wouldn't exist in publishing ten years later. WARNING: This episode contains a short clip of Mark singing a parody version of "Summer of '69" by Bryan Adams. (He couldn't help it. Song lyrics haunt his brain. The minute he mentioned the summer of 2009, the classic Adams song came to mind.) Prior to the interview, Mark shares a word from the episode's sponsor, Findaway Voices . . .He talks about the sources of his latest payment from Findaway Voices, which don't include the big players, like Audible or Apple, or Google, or Kobo. You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. As an introduction to the article, Mark shares the back-story of how he wrote article for an online magazine called The Mark News (no relation) on the topic of publishing and bookselling. This had been back when he was on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Booksellers Association, an active member of a couple of Campus Bookstore associations as well, and heavily involved in using the print-on-demand technology of The Espresso Book Machine in a bookstore in Hamilton, Ontario. The reason Mark started thinking about the article in question was because of a sale he noticed on Kindle for the book that the article was republished in. A 2011 volume called Living at the Tip: Navigating the Digital Tipping Point of the Book World. This book is something Mark published in the space of a few hours when Kindle first announced KDP Select, their exclusivity program. He collected the articles together, used Amazon's cover generation tool and published it, just to have a title in the program at all times. In the article being shared, Mark explains the basic workings of territorial rights and how it has historically operated with publishers in various countries, agents, and authors. He also shares his own frustration with the fake virtual borders in a digital world that don't seem necessary because the old ones were based on warehousing books inside the borders of a country after they were shipped there, or the rights were acquired for that territory. In a digital world, the shipping of dead trees from continent to continent is not an issue, and, therefore, is something that Mark speculated SHOULD begin to disappear ten years from when he wrote it in 2009. He goes on to explain how self-published and indie authors and smaller publishers have embraced the new digital world in ways that the major or larger publishers haven't. This is most likely due to the fact that big publishers are heavily invested in printing, stocking and shipping physical books, which represents the majority of their revenue.
