My guests this month are the incorrigible and irredeemable Emily 7.  We start the episode desperately trying to piece together how we first me which proved impossible. The details of our adventures are foggier than a winters morning by a lake (and all the better for it) so we moved on to the segments once we'd agreed on a chronology of events. After debating the correct pronunciation of street names, we move on to Sonic Seconds and tickle our brains with moments from Gilla Band, Led Zeppelin and Labi Siffre (who we find out was the original Slim Shady).  From there we hear about a potentially lethal run in with sodium hydroxide at my place of work, and a potentially lethal gig for Emily 7 in Mountjoy Prison before Have I Got Tunes For You gives us the chance to shine with recommendations ranging from Guthrie Govan to Curly Bliss to Julee Cruise to Diiv.  Rounding out the evening, Scott wows us with his Clinton impression and then him and Dan disappoints us with their predilection for and proficiency with prank phone calls.

“Supergroup” is a tired, overused term in music. However, when musical aces like guitarist https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guthrie-govan-the-linguist (Guthrie Govan), bassist Bryan Beller, and drummer Marco Minnemann jam… they are an unrivaled force of nature. Each player has a remarkable resume: Govan has worked with https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/porcupine-tree (Steven Wilson), Hans Zimmer, and Asia; Beller with https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/joe-satriani (Satriani), https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/steve-vai (Vai), https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/brendon-small-sh-t-i-couldnt-do-a-year-ago (Dethklok), and https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-dweezil-zappa (Dweezil Zappa); and Minnemann with the Mute Gods, Trey Gunn, H-Blockx, and Mike Keneally—among many others. What makes a supergroup novel is generally the collective's previous endeavors and collaborations. The magic with these three cats is that their superpowers combine to become a flashy and fluent highflying act. Formed unceremoniously for a performance at the 2011 Anaheim NAMM Show, this tremendously talented trio has released nine albums (five studio and four live) in 11 years. The attraction for both the audience and the band is the same: variety. In any given performance, you can hear them shift from Return to Forever to https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-yes-steve-howe-and-chris-squire (Yes) to https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-king-crimsons-robert-fripp (King Crimson) to https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/the-big-5/steve-vai (Vai) to https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/tom-morello (Rage) to Funkadelic to moments of deranged Zappa. “We've been a pretty strange, eclectic band to begin with, as the music we do tips our hats to a lot of different styles,” notes Govan. “All I've ever done over the years I've been playing guitar is to just listen to everything around me and absorb the aspects of it that I liked. I've never felt an urge to specialize. I'm happy to keep combining whatever flavorings I like and rolling them all together.” The result: These three executive chefs put on a spicy clinic that would even please Gordon Ramsay. The Aristocrats' headlining 2022 run landed at Nashville's City Winery on July 27. Before the musical throwdown commenced, PG's Chris Kies hosted conversations that covered Beller's booming setup, including some old favorites and recovered friends (via social-media sleuthing), while Govan focused on detailing the slight-but-crucial changes to his signature Charvel and explaining his live tonal evolution—modernized with an all-encompassing Fractal Audio unit. Wally Toney (Cornford Amps USA) | The story of Cornford amps is one seldom told. However, I got the chance to catch up with Cornford Amplification USA owner, Wally Toney, on this episode of the Fret Success Guitar Show. We talk about the history starting with Paul Cornford and Martin Kidd and the reasons why the company stopped making amps in the end. Some key players that use Cornford Amps are Guthrie Govan, Richie Kotzen, Mark Tremonti and so many more. SO many funny stories in this episode and we ponder the future of guitar amps, being backstage at the NAMM show, searching for the perfect guitar tone, Eddie Van Halen and how Wally's daughter was nearly hit on by Wolfgang Van Halen. Taking a slight break from our full Queen studio discography journey, for Bonus Episode #5 we've decided to do something special. It's co-host Chris' turn to come up with the bonus episode topic and he's decided on... "5 Favorite Guitar Solos."Looking for a list of greatest guitar solos that doesn't include “Stairway to Heaven”, “Comfortably Numb”, or Eric Clapton? Well you've come to the right place. We're a show of opinions, and as four guitar players ourselves, these are our own opinions on the best guitar solos that we appreciate most. Part I? Yes, Top 5, Part II? More on that later. Each of us brought to the show five guitar solos, without any crosstalk or hints of what we might pick ahead of time. There was no criteria or limitations other than the ability to make your case for why you connected with this particular guitar solo so much. Each solo would be given a seed, 5 (least favorite) through 1 (most favorite). After presenting them all, we'll go through a modified version of our hilarious and savage "Love It or Flush It" section, to determine the Top Five Guitar Solos out of all of our selections for the Light the Sky Podcast.Considering that this was such a blast, we might do a Part II, as this really isn't meant to be so much of a "Top Five of All Time - We Love Jimi Hendrix" list, but an entertaining way to introduce each other and our audience to new music.Available at https://lightthesky.net/podcasts/bonus-episodes/top-5-greatest-guitar-solos-of-all-time/ and on all podcast streaming platforms (just search "Light the Sky Podcast.")Follow "Light the Sky Podcast" on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to stay up-to-date with all things LTS.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lighttheskypodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/LighttheSkyPod1Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LightTheSkyPodcast/

In this lesson, Dan and I return to take a look at how to improve your creative improvisations and what that journey looks like on the guitar. The focus of this lesson, using a backing track we recently did another lesson with, is how having some predetermined themes to use in your solo and a plan can help you to come up with ideas and interest as you improvise. As we play around with improvisation Dan gives me some tips and a strategy following a structured approach to coming up with ideas. We use octaves, blues licks and then Dan delves into a couple of ideas: First he highlights the importance of being relaxed and not tense; second we take a look at three note per string pentatonic licks and referencing lots of different players Dan demonstrates how you can delve deeply into one idea to explore the theme fully. 00:00:56 Reference to That Pedal Show and our last episode 00:01:36 Introduction - how do we mix our licks up to make them not feel too samey? 00:02:11 Fancy Fusion Backing Track in B minor | #SZBT 205: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZUCq_UlqzI 00:02:34 The focus for today's lesson is making your licks stand out - one idea leading to the next and the next... 00:03:16 Breaking solos into rigid structures 00:03:39 EG - Ritchie Samboura's solo from Dead or Alive 00:04:19 Analysing the ideas behind the parts of this solo, e.g. octaves, little blues lick, pinched harmonics, country blues rock lick, chugging chords 00:08:43 First soloing over the backing track 00:12:00 Guthrie Govan interview 00:13:34 How important it is to have goals and visualise where you want to be 00:17:55 Learn something different - have a bit of surprise left in your life 00:19:18 Dan's example of how beginners approach improvisation 00:20:01 1) isolating the ocatave theme and idea 00:21:09 2) by landing here on the fretboard you're ready for the blues lick 00:21:32 Be bold and not scared of the improvisation 00:23:53 Two tips to help when you're not sure: leave a note to hang or leave space 00:29:33 Second improvisation, focussing on relaxing and themed ideas 00:35:00 Running with weights: e.g. go up the whole scale using octaves 00:36:23 using octaves 00:36:51 Foo Fighters idea - fattening up a melody 00:37:01 Steve Vai - slipping up to the octaves, slide then octave 00:38:59 The pentatonic thing: with 3 note per string patterns 00:40:26 Second three note per string pentatonics 00:42:37 three notes on one string, then one note 00:43:10 Joel Hoekstra thing - 00:47:12 Podcast episode idea and call to action - get in touch if you want this 00:48:02 Shawn Lane lick 00:52:28 Some advice about digging deep into ideas 00:53:17 Country bends 00:54:19 Guthrie Govan idea from waves - arpeggiating with string skipping 00:55:37 Arpeggiating a Bm chord 00:58:05 Dan using the Guthrie Govan idea to solo over the backing track 00:59:05 Mixing in the Vito Bratta idea of adding tapped notes 01:01:12 Interesting video by Rick Graham - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsEHi1wykkc&feature=youtu.be 01:04:57 Final jam over the backing track

The Raven… comes out of the gate as a tour de force and the Palaver is equally enthusiastic in our praise of both the album (songwriting, tone, lyrics) and Guthrie Govan. Perhaps the compliments get heaped on too heavily (is that possible)? Ken’s reaction is much more measured even though he seems to be feeling the same things as Paul and Joe. We consider the sheer number of classic prog influences that manifest themselves here as well. In the final analysis, in Raven, Steven Wilson is able to deliver an album of supernatural stories that is both beautiful and haunting at the same time. Episode 44 – Asia Part 5 Aura, Silent Nation & Phoenix Joe continues his solo consideration of the Asia catalog, finishing up the John Payne era with Aura and Silent Nation before moving on to the rebirth of original Asia with Phoenix. Aura, always a Joe favorite, fares well over time and there is much in this album to appreciate. The long list of guest musicians provides depth and interest across the tracks. The songwriting is solid and interesting. And, of course, Aura contains what may be the best Asia track ever in “Free”. Simply phenomenal. The John Payne era of Asia finishes strong with Silent Nation. The fact that this album was recorded as a band is obvious upon listening and provides a warmer, more organic feel. Guthrie Govan is a consistent highlight on Silent Nation and Billy Sherwood and Jay Schellen arrive on the scene. Phoenix sees a significant shift back to the original lineup of Downes, Howe, Palmer and Wetton. As one might expect from such a reunion, there is a lot of energy in the performance and songwriting on Phoenix. This is an album that continues to get better with repeated listens Twitter: @progpala Email: progpala@gmail.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/ProgPala YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCw_Xxit3D8wbv-AcJ_7Z__w/featured Theme music provided by: Dave DeWhitt

Guitar Lesson 36: Right hand techniques – rhythm, arpeggiating, hybrid, economy and sweep picking In guitar lesson 36, we focus fully on the right hand rhythmic and lead picking techniques. We start by looking at how you can arpeggiate chords interestingly using the pick, briefly in the style of Green Day and Guns ‘n’ Roses. We also look at a mix of pick and fingers. In the second half of the lesson we get technical and revisit economy and sweep-picking. A bit of an advanced lesson – if you’d like any tabs, then get in touch. Lyle Goldstein, an associate professor and strategic researcher at the U.S. Naval War College’s China Maritime Studies Institute, is an expert on Chinese and Russian security strategies. He is also an insightful commentator on what is going on behind the scenes with North Korea. Soon after the North Korean test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on July 4, Kaiser and Jeremy sat down with him in New York City to discuss what strategic options remain for China and other players in the region. Regular listeners of Sinica will remember Lyle from his previous appearance on the show last year, when he applied his unconventional thinking to territory disputes in the South China Sea. Recommendations: Jeremy: Rockaway Beach in Queens, New York — a good place for a surfer (such as himself) to catch a break. Lyle: No Exit: North Korea, Nuclear Weapons and International Security, by Jonathan D. Pollack of the Brookings Institute, which chronicles the modern history and development of the Korean Peninsula. No Exit contextualizes the United States’ contested relationship with North Korea today, as well as Russia and China’s increasingly complex role in it. Kaiser: Three recommendations: The music of jazz ensemble Snarky Puppy — check out their fantastic YouTube channel. The music of Andy Timmons, a kind of hair metal guitarist. And The Aristocrats, a rock trio led by one of the best living guitarists, Guthrie Govan.

- Some Skunk Funk (The Brecker Brothers) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0oY_47pwJ8 - Sad but True (Metallica) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_4OfD-wmGs - Money (Pink Floyd) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpbbuaIA3Ds La musique dans cette vidéo : - Kaad Chuek (Cyro Torres) SUIS-MOI SUR MA PAGE FACEBOOK "MUSIC YOUR LIFE" : https://www.facebook.com/cyromusicyourlife ABONNE-TOI A MA CHAINE YOUTUBE : https://www.youtube.com/c/CyroTorres LE SITE WEB "MUSIC YOUR LIFE" : http://musicyourlife.net/

Xander Demos is a high-energy rock and metal guitar player from Pittsburgh, PA. He is fueled by the passion to create melodic songs ranging from rock and metal genres to pop and ambient. Xander normally is associated with the rock and metal world but his versatility allows him to be comfortable in many forms of music.   Xander grew up in the decade of decadance and has been a big fan of everything from pop-metal, Top-40, thrash metal, progressive rock and even dance-related music. As long as there was a hook or a melody, he picked up on it. Xander's main influences are Shawn Lane, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore, Guthrie Govan, Jason Becker, Neal Schon, Micheal Romeo and John Sykes. In the early days, he was fortunate to have some teachers whom he respected and had given him great tools by which to hone his fluid technique. Some of these players include Ralph Santolla (ex-Deicide, Obituary), Dallas Perkins (M.I. Instructor) and currently Derryl Gabel.   Xander's playing style ranges from the beautifully melodic to the jaw-dropping insane. His playing encompasses much of what he has learned and absorbed from other players over the years. His melodies are the kind you can hum along to. He is releasing the full-length follow-up to his EP "Road To Guitarcadia", an instructional DVD, working with his three bands playing live every weekend and is now accepting guitar students for in-person and online lessons.   2011 had been a good year and Xander is currently building on that momentum for 2012.
