This is the second episode in our exciting three-part series on the use of performance enhancement imagery to improve officers skill aquisition, decision making and mental resilience. Dr. Arne Nieuwenhuys is Senior Lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology. He obtained his PhD from VU University Amsterdam. Dr Nieuwenhuys and colleagues published the study “Positive Effects of Police Officer Shooting Performance Under Threat in the Journal of Applied Cognitive Psychology.  In this interview, Dr. Nieuwenhuys explains strategies to consider in order to develop evidence-based interventions that help law enforcement officers improve their performance in those rapidly unfolding, ambiguous and extremely high-pressure situations where it counts the most. Topics reviewed in this podcast are the positive effects of performance enhancement imagery on police offer shooting capability under stress, and how the research supported PETTLEP imagery model effectively achieves functional equivalence. In addition, he discusses the importance of task representativeness in training and how it correlates with the Constraints Led Approach or CLA training method. This interview contains practical insights on the importance of law enforcement trainers using evidence-based interventions such as imagery, PETTLEP model, and task representativeness, to enhance police officers' performance and shooter capability under stress, ultimately improving their ability to handle high-pressure situations on the job.

RIP dear Mient Jan. Here is an extract from the press release, following what I am saying already in the podcast:  Solidarity with victims of wartime violence  In the 1990s, Faber supported peace activists and victims of wartime violence and dictatorships in numerous countries. He paid frequent visits to Yugoslavia and its successor countries, the southern Caucasus, Palestine and Iraq. He worked with other like-minded people on proposals for political solutions to stop violence and lay the foundations for democracy and human rights. As early as the autumn of 1991, he advocated for a strong international intervention in Bosnia and Herzegovina, months before war broke out. IKV was in favour of the Netherlands taking part in the UN mission in Srebrenica, but also warned against the destructive power of ethnic nationalism.     Faber was therefore highly critical of the political and military leadership when it came up short in July 1995 and Dutchbat failed to prevent Srebrenica, which had been declared a UN safe area, from being captured by the Bosnian Serbs. In just a few days, the Serbs murdered more than 8,000 men and boys, as well as a small number of women. Immediately after these horrifying events, Faber and other IKV staff sought contact with the survivors of the genocide. They promised support for the survivors' ‘campaign for truth and justice', but the Dutch government and parliament in The Hague were not interested in serious contacts. At the request of the survivors, IKV brought UN interpreter Hasan Nuhanovic and Alma Mustafic, the daughter of Dutchbat electrician Rizo Mustafic, into contact with the lawyer Liesbeth Zegveld. After a struggle lasting more than a decade, they won their civil lawsuit against the State of the Netherlands: Dutchbat should never have sent their relatives off the compound where they were safe.  In 2002, a conflict arose between Mient Jan Faber and the IKV board about the war in Iraq. Faber stepped down from his position as general secretary in 2003. In 2004, he became a professor at VU University Amsterdam, where he held the chair in Citizens' Involvement in War Situations, funded by IKV, until 2012. He was also a visiting professor at the University of Houston in the US. He enjoyed teaching students, who found his lessons and the many debates extremely inspiring. Faber wrote five books: one about Srebrenica and four in which he gave a lively account of his childhood, his experiences in the peace movement, his philosophy and motivation to work for peace. Mient Jan Faber was 81. He is survived by a wife, two daughters and five grandchildren. What rules dictate trade in symbiosis? How did the complex relationship between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi evolve? What's really going on in the world beneath our feet? On this episode, we talk to Toby Kiers, an evolutionary biologist at VU University Amsterdam, about the massive networks of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) that inhabit the soil beneath our feet. Toby studies the symbiotic relationship between AMF and 80-90% of plant species, through which the tube-shaped fungi cells trade nutrients with plant roots in exchange for carbon. We draw connections between these networks and human networks, and discuss whether economists should be taking notes from these systems. We also talk about SPUN, a non-profit initiative Toby's group recently launched with the goal of mapping these fungal networks and advocating for their protection worldwide. About Dr. Timo De Groof Dr. Timo De Groof studied Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the University of Ghent where he graduated in 2015. During his master's studies, he specialized in Biomedical Biotechnology and Structural Biology/Biochemistry. During his last year of studies, Timo performed research in the biopharmaceutical company Argen x and gained experience in the identification and characterization of llama-derived antibodies in inflammatory diseases and oncology. From 2015 to 2019, he completed his Ph.D. in the Medicinal Chemistry group at VU University Amsterdam under the supervision of prof. dr. Martine Smit. During his Ph.D., Timo, together with Dr. Raimond Heukers, developed a nanobody platform within the research group and used this platform to develop nanobodies targeting viral G protein-coupled receptors with a special focus on the human cytomegalovirus-encoded chemokine receptor US28. During his Ph.D., he used these nanobodies as research tools, to investigate different GPCR conformations, while also focusing on their therapeutic potential in oncology and transplant infectious disease. Starting from September 2019, Timo started working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in the In Vivo Cellular and Molecular Imaging (ICMI) group that is focused on translational/clinical applications of nanobodies. He currently is focusing on the development of nanobody-based immunotracers as part of the IMI/EFPIA project entitled "Immune Image". Moreover, he is closely involved in multiple projects where he focuses on the generation of nanobodies against "difficult-to-target" proteins. In the near future, Timo hopes to combine his previous GPCR experience with his current focus to set up his own research line focusing on translational applications of GPCR-targeting nanobodies. ------------------------------------------- Imagine a world in which the vast majority of us are healthy. In A Natural History of Natural Theology: The Cognitive Science of Theology and Philosophy of Religion (MIT Press, 2015), Helen de Cruz of the VU University Amsterdam and Johan de Smedt of Ghent University examine how the findings of cognitive science can and cannot be used to draw conclusions about the rationality of religious belief. They examine the types and role of the cognitive processes at work in these arguments, such as cause and effect and inference to the best explanation. They also consider whether theism provides a good reason for the pervasiveness of religious belief across human societies across time, and argue that the seemingly obvious conclusion that a naturalistic explanation of religious beliefs debunks these beliefs is not at all obvious.
