In this episode of Rehab Science, Dr. Tom Walters, DPT, breaks down cervical radiculopathy—a common condition involving compression or irritation of the nerve roots in the neck. He explores the relevant cervical spine anatomy, including how disc herniations or degenerative changes like bone spurs can narrow the neural foramina and impinge nerve roots, leading to symptoms that radiate from the neck into the arm and hand. Dr. Walters reviews hallmark symptoms such as radiating pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness, and discusses how these typically follow a dermatomal distribution depending on the affected cervical level. Dr. Walters also explains the clinical examination process for diagnosing cervical radiculopathy, including provocative orthopedic tests and the role of imaging like MRI when necessary. He outlines both medical and physical therapy approaches to treatment—ranging from anti-inflammatory medications and injections to targeted rehab strategies like cervical traction, neural mobilization, postural correction, and strengthening exercises. The episode wraps up with practical advice for managing this condition through movement-based rehabilitation. YouTube Video with Exercises Nerve Mobilization Exercises Amazon Book Link

Luke was 29 years old, battling almost 10 years of daily back pain from an L5-S1 disc herniation, unable to sit through work or pick up his son without discomfort. He was ready to call a surgeon — until he found the Limitless Program. In just 3 months, Luke went from constant pain and fear of movement … to golfing, lifting, and sitting 80% pain-free — no surgery, no injections, no pills.
Instead of these terrible core exercises, do these instead for your herniated disc! ►► IS YOUR BACK PAIN FIXABLE? Take The FREE Quiz and be given the BEST starting point to start seeing relief based on your results! http://www.fitness4backpain.com/quiz If you've been dealing with chronic lower back pain from an L4-L5 or L5-S1 disc herniation or bulge, you already know how frustrating it can be to find the right exercises that don't make things worse. Unfortunately, a lot of common core exercises can actually increase your pain and slow down your healing! For years, I did all the “right” things—physical therapy, core workouts, stretching, medication—yet my pain never fully went away. After being diagnosed with degenerative disc disease (DDD) and a ruptured L5-S1 disc, I kept searching for answers. What I learned? Some of the most recommended core exercises were actually setting me back! If you've been told to “strengthen your core” but still feel stuck in pain, you need to know which exercises to avoid—and what to do instead. What You'll Learn in This Video✅ The worst core exercises for L4-L5 or L5-S1 disc injuries✅ Why traditional core training can increase pain and sensitivity✅ Safer, more effective core exercises that support real healing✅ How to rebuild core strength without fear of making things worse Many people with herniated or bulging discs feel trapped between pain and inactivity. They're afraid to move, but they also know they need to build strength to support their spine. The problem? Not all core exercises are created equal. If you're still doing exercises like sit-ups, crunches, or certain planks, you might be unknowingly keeping yourself in pain. The good news? There are better ways to build core strength that don't involve bracing, straining, or worsening your disc injury. After years of failed treatments, I discovered that pain-free movement is possible—but it starts with doing the right exercises and avoiding the wrong ones. Who This Video is For This is for you if:You suffer from chronic lower back pain due to a disc bulge or herniationYou feel afraid to move and don't know which exercises are safeYou've tried injections, surgery, medication, or PT with little successYou want a drug-free, holistic approach to pain reliefYou dream of getting back to hiking, kayaking, playing with your kids, or just living pain-free Enjoy! -WIlliam LOVING THIS CONTENT? Phil Norvold, Whealth Limitless member: "On May 23rd, I reached out to the Whealth team in a desperate attempt to avoid back surgery. My neurosurgeon had just diagnosed me with a 5mm L5-S1 disc herniation that was crushing my sciatic nerve, and insisted that a microdiscectomy was my next option, as everything I tried for the previous 3 months didn't help. From March to May, I tried an emergency epidural, yoga, Thai massage, sauna, dry needling, ibuprofen, muscle relaxers, painkillers, cold plunging.. but the pain was relentless, worsening, shooting down my leg & making every day a struggle. My work, travel, & responsibilities as a father/ husband were all suffering tremendously, so I needed to find a way out. On May 23rd, I faced a crucial decision: undergo back surgery or try the Whealth Limitless Program, which I had seen online help others like me overcome their back pain. I scheduled a consultation with co-founder @camborch who helped me believe in myself, and I decided to give the program my all before resorting to surgery. I started Limitless that afternoon and created a schedule to follow each 30 min daily workout. I awkwardly introduced myself in the private facebook community and began learning the basics, posting videos, and getting private coaching. Within 8 weeks, I eliminated 90% of my pain. By the end of week 1, I could sit comfortably with less pain, put my shoes on, and travel on a plane. 3-4 weeks in, my range of motion started returning, I got stronger, and the pain was at 50% By week 5, my neurosurgeon told me in a follow up that he no longer recommended surgery, changing his mind, and that what I was doing WAS WORKING! By week 6, I was back on a bike, and during week 8, I got back to jiu jitsu rolling and I cycled 120 miles. This program not only gave me my life back but also taught me the importance of balance and intentionality. I've decided to run it one more time, as I've regained my pre-injury abilities but still have room for improvement. I'll be at 100% in no time. This program is priceless, and it works if you work it."
Limitless member Maria's story on reducing her 12 mm L5-S1 herniation to a 5mm herniation: “At 39, I faced an unexpected battle: healing my 12 mm L5/S1 disc herniation and sciatica while navigating the shortcomings of the healthcare system. As a Functional Medicine Nurse Practitioner, I knew these pitfalls, but enduring countless ineffective treatments revealed how broken the system truly is. This is my story of how the Limitless program helped me overcome my pain and reduce my herniation from 12 mm to 5 mm in a few months. My pain began with tightness in my glute/ hamstring, intensifying from then on. Seeking relief, I turned to two chiropractors and massages, but my pain only worsened. The fear and frustration grew as I faced the reality of becoming a "back pain" patient. Desperate for answers, I consulted a regenerative medicine MD. An MRI revealed the 12 mm herniation. I was also referred to a “top” surgeon who said that I needed surgery. I was motivated to avoid surgery however as I have seen too many cases go wrong, and I knew that wouldn't be my fix. I began traditional PT and incorporated every modality I knew—acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and extensive supplementation. Despite these efforts, my condition worsened. A patient mentioned the Limitless program in 2023, but I dismissed it, skeptical of its Instagram origins. As months passed and my pain persisted, I sought an epidural PRP injection with no lasting effects. Knowing I needed a robust movement program, I revisited Limitless and started on Feb 22, 2024. Every day for eight weeks, I committed to the program. Fear once gripped me, even making me afraid to breathe, but Limitless gave me courage. By the 2nd week, I noticed improvements. By the 12th week, I had no more sharp nerve pain and was confident enough to return to softball, a dream I thought impossible. 6 months after my initial MRI, a follow-up showed my herniation had shrunk from 12 mm to 5 mm. The Limitless program taught me I could move without fear of harm, a stark contrast to outdated methods (McKenzie & McGill) that had failed me. Limitless allowed me to train at home with simple equipment, guided by an easy-to-use app with clear video instructions. The program healed my body and restored my confidence. My only regret was not starting sooner. Today, I stand stronger, a testament to the power of resilience and the right guidance. Thank you Whealth team for your knowledge, guidance, & encouragement.” Use code MARIAPOD for 10% off our programs, risk free, with our 30 day $ back guarantee: https://spreadwhealth.com/programs-overcome-pain
If Bent Over Rows are killing your back, Today I'll share two of my favorite back pain-friendly bent-over-row alternatives that build strength without hurting your back! ►►Here's a simple daily pain relief routine for L4-L5 or L5-S1 lower back pain. GO HERE: www.fitness4backpain.com/routine Building back strength is really important if you've been dealing with chronic lower back pain for any length of time. Over time, the pain, fear, and lack of use create atrophy or muscle weakening in the back, which only sends you deeper into pain, fear of use, and weakening. The worst thing you could do with exercises like the barbell bent over a row is to keep doing it, thinking the pain will eventually go away. Instead, while you continue to learn to heal the source of pain, we want to pick exercises that allow us to train these "scary" or "painful" muscles in ways that promote healing and strength building. Today, I'll reveal two back exercises that I have used as a bent-over row alternative. These always leave my back feeling great! -WIlliam LOVING THIS CONTENT? He tried advil, ibuprofen, cortisone injections, epidural shots, oxycontin, PT, chiro, massage - but none of these gave him any pain relief. Surgery seemed to be his last resort, but he wanted to try to rehab with movement before going under the knife. Instead Dillon opted to try the Whealth Limitless Program, and within 6-8 weeks, eliminated his pain and cancelled his surgery. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/whealthpodcast/message

In this video, Dr. G reveals 2 simple steps to help you find relief and regain mobility. Many people experience low back pain that worsens with sitting or bending, making simple tasks like tying shoes or sitting on a plane unbearable. This type of pain, known as non-specific low back pain, affects 90% of individuals globally and involves the discs, muscles, and joints. Dr. G explains that this pain is often due to excessive flexion (forward bending) of the spine, which places pressure on the discs, muscles, and joints. To counteract this, he recommends two key steps: Passively Regain Extension: Lay on your stomach with your hands under your shoulders and push your chest away from the floor, performing a passive lumbar extension. This helps restore motion in the discs, muscles, and joints that may be lacking. Load the Tissues: Strengthen your posterior chain and discs by performing a proper hinge movement. This helps maintain the new mobility gained from the first step and prevents the tissues from returning to their previous state. By following these two steps, you can strengthen your discs and spinal structures, improve your range of motion, and reduce your low back pain. Your questions:* Do you think we can move better as we age?* From the Wednesday Q&A podcast regarding disk herniation, if a client has a slipped disk at the cervical spine and was advised by her chiro to do soft yoga or gentle, needing to avoid down dog, is it okay if she continues our LYT yoga practice? At some point, I kind of know the answer, because that's what we highlight in a lot of classes, that neutral spine position and definitely working with the cervical neck flexors to strengthen.
