Bijzonder dat haar boek zo aanslaat in het door en door seculiere Frankrijk, want haar deels autobiografische roman gaat over een protestantse domineesfamilie. Waarom raakt dat zo'n snaar in onze seculiere tijd? Misschien omdat het niet alleen gaat over een familie, maar ook over onze cultuur. Ze verbindt thema's als alzheimer, burn-out en geloofstwijfel telkens aan grotere, existentiële vragen. De dementerende opa als metafoor voor een samenleving die vergeet waar ze vandaan komt. De opgebrande vader als beeld van een beschaving die zichzelf heeft uitgeput. De twijfelende zoon als stem van een generatie die zich afvraagt: heeft het allemaal nog wel zin? En dat maakt haar een fascinerende gast - ook als je het boek niet hebt gelezen. Bovendien houdt ze, als iemand die zelf nooit in Nederland woonde, ons Nederlanders een interessante culturele spiegel voor. Wie is Jens Voet?Jens Voet is bewegingswetenschapper, wielercoach en vers gepromoveerd onderzoeker aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Op 6 mei 2025 verdedigde hij zijn proefschrift Gearing up for greatness, waarin hij zich boog over talentherkenning en -ontwikkeling in het professionele wielrennen.Zelf begon hij als jonge renner bij ZRTC Theo Middelkamp, maar inmiddels is hij actief als coach en performance-analist bij de U23-ploeg van het Zwitserse Tudor Pro Cycling Team. Eerder werkte hij onder meer als trainer bij Metec en liep hij stage bij het toenmalige Team Sunweb. Jens combineert wetenschappelijke inzichten met praktijkervaring uit het peloton, en is daarmee een unieke stem in het debat over wat een wielertalent écht succesvol maakt. 2. Wat maakt iemand een écht wielertalent, volgens het onderzoek van Jens?Volgens Jens Voet is het niet het piekvermogen of de sprintkracht dat het verschil maakt tussen talent en top. Wat wél het verschil maakt, is het vermogen om onder vermoeidheid hoge prestaties te blijven leveren – wat hij “durability” noemt.Veel jonge renners kunnen indrukwekkende waardes trappen in een test of wedstrijd van 20 minuten. Maar pas na een uur volle bak koers, wanneer vermoeidheid intreedt, zie je wie echt boven komt drijven. Toppers kunnen dan nog steeds diep gaan en herstellen, waar anderen terugvallen. Talentherkenning vraagt dus om andere meetmomenten en een andere bril. 3. Waarom is het zo moeilijk om toekomstig wielertalent vroeg te herkennen?Een van de grote problemen in talentherkenning is het onderscheid tussen “early bloomers” en duurzame talenten. Jens laat zien dat veel jonge renners die opvallen in de jeugd door fysieke voorsprong, bijvoorbeeld omdat ze eerder in de puberteit zijn, later niet per se doorstromen naar het profniveau.Andersom geldt dat laatbloeiers vaak onterecht worden overgeslagen. Omdat traditionele selectiemomenten (zoals nationale kampioenschappen) kortdurend zijn en piekprestaties belonen, missen we vaak de taaie, duurzame talenten die in het echte werk tot bloei zouden komen. 4. Wat betekent dit voor talentontwikkeling in het wielrennen?De bevindingen van Jens vragen om een fundamentele herziening van hoe we met talenten omgaan. Selectiecriteria zouden minder moeten draaien om momentopnames, en meer om ontwikkeling over tijd.Ook herstelvermogen en mentale weerbaarheid zouden een grotere rol moeten spelen in de beoordeling. Jens pleit niet voor een compleet andere aanpak, maar wel voor meer nuance: laat jonge renners zich op verschillende...

In deze aflevering gaan we op zoek naar de waarheid. Er is vandaag de dag meer informatie dan ooit, maar ook meer verwarring. Hoe kun je nog weten hoe het écht zit, te midden van fake news, complottheorieën en liegende presidenten? But the most vulnerable people at sea nowadays clearly are irregular migrants, sailing by rubber boats rather than cruise ships. Moreover, the rubber boats play a crucial role in this politics of protection, and ultimately preclude the irregular migrants from the protection of the non-refoulement principle. Through the case of the rubber boat, as a transnational legal encounter of people, rules and objects, I investigate the uneven geographies and temporalities of international law as an everyday practice. In this episode, we welcome longtime friend and collaborator of the UCL Global Governance Institute, Professor Philipp Pattberg, to the podcast, a leading scholar in global environmental governance and sustainability transitions. As Director of the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute and Professor of Transnational Environmental Governance at VU Amsterdam, Philipp's research examines the role of non-state actors, polycentric governance, and institutional complexity in shaping environmental policy. A decade after its adoption, the Paris framework continues to define global climate efforts – but does it still hold promise as an effective governance mechanism? In this episode, Pattberg explores the tensions between ambition and implementation, the growing role of private authority and climate clubs, and the need for transformative governance approaches to meet the urgency of the climate crisis. He also reflects on the broader implications of environmental governance beyond climate, from biodiversity loss to planetary boundaries, and what lessons can be drawn for possible futures of multilateralism. Met synodevoorzitter Peter Sinia van de Nederlandse Gereformeerde Kerken en Mariecke van den Berg, bijzonder hoogleraar feminisme en christendom aan de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen en universitair hoofddocent religie en gender aan de VU Amsterdam. Veel homo's hebben onnoemelijk veel pijn geleden door hoe kerken en individuele christenen met hen zijn omgegaan. Dat is niet goed geweest, bedachten ze bij de Nederlandse Gereformeerde Kerken. Ze zitten daar midden in een bezinningsproces over wat de plek moet zijn van homoseksuele gemeenteleden in de kerk. Maar eerst moest er een verootmoediging komen. Zijn homo's daarmee geholpen? Mariecke is er blij mee want ze heeft vaak het gevoel gehad dat over haar is gepraat. Maar ze plaatst ook kanttekeningen. Zo vindt ze de verootmoediging ‘halfslachtig' en mist ze het woord ‘schuld'. Today, it is my pleasure and honor to speak with Prof. Maarten de Groot, Endowed Chair of Resilient Family Businesses & Enterprise Families at VU Amsterdam School of Business and Economics. Prior to completing his PhD at VU Amsterdam in 2021, Maarten had a long and distinguished career in wealth management. He shares some of the most important factors and themes that define and propel families' journeys through time and across generations. Er zwemmen steeds meer vrouwelijke zeeschildpadden in onze oceaan. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt dat misschien niet erg, maar zonder die mannetjes worden ze met uitsterven bedreigd. Hoe kan het nou dat er steeds meer vrouwtjes rondzwemmen en wat hebben wij als mens hiermee te maken? Dat vroeg influencer Wildebras aan de Universiteit van Nederland. Bioloog Mátyás Bittenbinder van VU Amsterdam neemt ons mee in Diergaarde Blijdorp om te praten over het seksleven van de zeeschildpad en wat wij kunnen doen om dit dier te redden. De inflatie is deze maand gedaald naar 5,7 procent, terwijl het in mei nog 6,1 procent was. En dat is volgens Bas Jacobs, hoogleraar Economie en Overheidsfinanciën aan de VU Amsterdam, ‘heel goed nieuws'. Volgens Jacobs is de daling geen gevolg van de nieuwe rekenmethode. 'Want ook als je de rekenmethode terugrekent naar de cijfers voor deze maand, zie je ook in de vorige maanden dat de inflatie hoger was dan nu. Dus ongeacht de methode, gaat de inflatie omlaag. Dat is heel goed nieuws', zegt Jacobs in BNR Zakendoen. De nieuwe rekenmethode heeft er volgens hem echter wel voor gezorgd dat we nu iets minder inflatie hebben dan we eerder dachten. 'De oude rekenmethode was gebaseerd op energiecontracten die mensen nu konden afsluiten in de markt, maar niet noodzakelijkerwijs op de energiecontracten die ze al hadden. Daardoor was de inflatie in eerste instantie erg hoog. Dat is nu gecorrigeerd door een nieuwe reeks berekeningen.' Jacobs merkt wel op dat deze nieuwe reeksen niet geldig zijn als ze worden teruggerekend; de oude inflatiecijfers blijven van kracht. Verdere renteverhogingen Hoewel de inflatie afneemt, zijn er nog steeds geluiden, onder andere van president Klaas Knot van de Nederlansche Bank en ECB-president Christine Lagarde, die dit recentelijk in Portugal benadrukte, dat het nog niet voldoende is. Zij pleiten voor verdere renteverhogingen. Verstandig? 'Dat weet ik niet', zegt Jacos. 'Ik denk dat hun eerlijke antwoord moet zijn: volgens mij weten we het ook niet, want we zien allerlei conflicterende signalen.' De ECB kwam vandaag met nieuwe inflatiecijfers, en volgens Jacobs komt de headline inflatie, gemeten over het hele consumptiepakket, fors omlaag. 'Maar ondertussen zien we dat de kerninflatie, waar je de energie- en voedselprijzen uithaalt, een klein tikje (0,1 procent) hoger is geworden. Dat bezorgt al die centrale bankiers hoofdbrekens, want onderliggend wordt het inflatiecijfer niet beter, maar slechter.' Tegelijkertijd zijn er volgens hem wel een paar signalen die duiden op een sterk dalende inflatie. 'De belangrijkste vind ik de geldhoeveelheid M3, dat is de meest ruime definitie van geld die de ECB hanteert. Die zien we echt omlaag knallen en dat heeft ook iets te maken met de slechtere kredietverlening. We zien nu in de cijfers dat de kredietverlening heel hard achteruit kachelt en dat heeft natuurlijk weer alles te maken met die hoge rente.'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a key metric in the overall homeostatic balance of the body. HRV is simply a measure of the variation in time between each heartbeat. This variation is controlled by a primitive part of the nervous system called the autonomic nervous system (ANS). It is largely an indicator of how well the body is handling the Allostatic Load (stress load). I didn't truly grasp HRV until I was exposed to the work of Dr. Marco Altini; so I decided to ask him to come on and help educate my listeners. Joseph chats with Anne Scheel. Anne is currently a postdoc at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam but will be starting as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Methodology and Statistics at Utrecht University in mid October. Anne is a meta-scientist who is interested in which research and publication practices can improve the reproducibility of the published literature, and how researchers can be encouraged to design more falsifiable and informative studies. She did her PhD at Eindhoven University of Technology, followed by a postdoc project at VU Amsterdam and CWTS Leiden. In this episode we chat about her recent publications in which she argues that most claims in the psychology literature are so critically underspecified that attempts to empirically evaluate them are doomed to failure. Ruben Laukkonen, PhD is a cognitive neuroscientist, contemplative, speaker, and poet. His eclectic background includes competing semi-professionally in Muay Thai Kickboxing, founding two businesses (including the first online market for bitcoin in Australia), and intensive meditation training. Dr. Laukkonen is currently a principal investigator and lecturer at Southern Cross University and holds honorary fellowships at VU Amsterdam and The University of Queensland. He uses methods such as behavior, neuroimaging, machine learning, and phenomenology to empirically investigate some of the rarest states of human consciousness. Welcome to the podcast Rebekah Lamb! Rebekah is an undergraduate student studying anthropology at the Vu Amsterdam. After high school Rebekah completed an EF gap year in Shanghai, China where she wrote an ethnography. She explains how this experience instantly hooked her and inspired her to pursue a degree in Anthropology. We discuss her indigenous Abenaki heritage and how she has been involved in her community. She's studied and now practices traditional Abenaki tattooing, and we discuss the process and her own plans to get facial markings. We divulge into her love of pirates, specifically Grace O'Malley, as well as discussing her role as a student advocate for people with disabilities in academia. In this episode Lauren Moore joins us to discuss Marian apparitions, what they are, why they are important, how they impact Roman Catholicism, and how they should be viewed and understood from an Evangelical perspective.Lauren Moore has been serving with Pioneers in southwest France for almost 12 years.  During that time she has been involved in four different church plants, each in a different stage:  the Basque Coast Baptist Church (now an established church with a pastor), the Surf Church Hossegor (a small but growing church that started in 2009), and a house church in Bidache (started in 2019).  In 2015 she helped plant Les Cairns, the first evangelical church in Lourdes, a Catholic pilgrimage city, in over 40 years.  Her experience in Catholicism allows her to train other missionaries in understanding Roman Catholicism to reach Europe.  She is also currently completing her doctoral thesis with VU Amsterdam and Union School of Theology (Wales), focusing on the impact and influence of apparitions of Mary.
