In the mare liberum, seafarers are protected by the age-old maritime duty to rescue anyone in distress at sea. This principle has also been codified in various treaties, including the 1974 Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention. This convention was adopted in response to the Titanic disaster and mainly focuses on safety on board of commercial ships. But the most vulnerable people at sea nowadays clearly are irregular migrants, sailing by rubber boats rather than cruise ships. Formally, these migrants are also protected by the non-refoulement principle under refugee and human rights law. Yet in practice, they are subject to a politics of protection which operates through an intermeshing of different legal regimes. Moreover, the rubber boats play a crucial role in this politics of protection, and ultimately preclude the irregular migrants from the protection of the non-refoulement principle. Through the case of the rubber boat, as a transnational legal encounter of people, rules and objects, I investigate the uneven geographies and temporalities of international law as an everyday practice. Moreover, by paying critical attention to how objects participate in actualising certain sets of relations and potentials over others, the concept of transnational legal encounters enables us to critically re-think the production of meanings, legalities and politics, layering complexities to law's work in and to the world.Tanja Aalberts is Professor of Law and Politics at the department of Transnational Legal Studies, VU Amsterdam. In this episode, we welcome longtime friend and collaborator of the UCL Global Governance Institute, Professor Philipp Pattberg, to the podcast, a leading scholar in global environmental governance and sustainability transitions. As Director of the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute and Professor of Transnational Environmental Governance at VU Amsterdam, Philipp's research examines the role of non-state actors, polycentric governance, and institutional complexity in shaping environmental policy. His work has not only advanced our understanding of governance arrangements beyond the nation-state but has also been instrumental in defining the contours of global governance itself – critically interrogating how the very concept of governance is framed, structured, and, ultimately, deployed in the world. With the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, fast approaching, we take stock of the evolving governance landscape under the Paris Agreement. A decade after its adoption, the Paris framework continues to define global climate efforts – but does it still hold promise as an effective governance mechanism? In this episode, Pattberg explores the tensions between ambition and implementation, the growing role of private authority and climate clubs, and the need for transformative governance approaches to meet the urgency of the climate crisis. He also reflects on the broader implications of environmental governance beyond climate, from biodiversity loss to planetary boundaries, and what lessons can be drawn for possible futures of multilateralism. Throughout, he challenges us to consider how governance itself is shaped by ideological assumptions, questioning the analytical ‘boxes' that define the field. As Design Curator at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, she brings new perspectives to the museum's vast design collection. Her experimental working method is driven by an interest in developing new formats for knowledge transfer, while her exhibitions and projects explore the intersections of social, political, (de)colonial, environmental and economic issues. Met synodevoorzitter Peter Sinia van de Nederlandse Gereformeerde Kerken en Mariecke van den Berg, bijzonder hoogleraar feminisme en christendom aan de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen en universitair hoofddocent religie en gender aan de VU Amsterdam. Veel homo's hebben onnoemelijk veel pijn geleden door hoe kerken en individuele christenen met hen zijn omgegaan. Dat is niet goed geweest, bedachten ze bij de Nederlandse Gereformeerde Kerken. Ze zitten daar midden in een bezinningsproces over wat de plek moet zijn van homoseksuele gemeenteleden in de kerk. Maar eerst moest er een verootmoediging komen. Zijn homo's daarmee geholpen? Mariecke is er blij mee want ze heeft vaak het gevoel gehad dat over haar is gepraat. Maar ze plaatst ook kanttekeningen. Zo vindt ze de verootmoediging ‘halfslachtig' en mist ze het woord ‘schuld'. Volgens Peter kunnen plaatselijke kerken na deze landelijke verootmoediging zelf sorry zeggen tegen specifieke gemeenteleden. De grote vraag is welke rol lhbt+'ers krijgen in de NGK. Waardoor je in de nacht op zoek moet naar een veilige en warme plek om te kunnen slapen. Onder een brug, bij een opvang of voor de zoveelste keer bij een vriend op de bank. Élke nacht weer. Het is voor te veel mensen een realiteit. Nienke Boesveldt doet er alles aan om dat te veranderen. Ze is onderzoeker en docent op het gebied van dakloosheid aan de UvA en de VU Amsterdam. Met haar onderzoeken probeert ze het beleid en perspectief op dakloosheid positief te veranderen. Tijdens De Nacht van NTR Wetenschap vertelt ze in de studio wat er nodig is om ieder mens een dak boven zijn hoofd te geven.

Come and hear what our guests have been exploring. Inger Leemans, is a professor of Cultural History at VU Amsterdam and researcher at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is passionate about making her research on the smells of the past accessible to everyone. Matthew Collins is a fellow of the Danish and Swedish Royal Academies, and chair of the Archaeology section of the British Academy. Collins explores the ways in which archaeology can borrow tools from biology to explore ancient artefacts and tissues, from shells and bone to parchment and pots. Michela Rossi is a scientific project officer at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. She is interested in structural safety assessments of historic buildings and digital fabrication.

Today, it is my pleasure and honor to speak with Prof. Maarten de Groot, Endowed Chair of Resilient Family Businesses & Enterprise Families at VU Amsterdam School of Business and Economics. Prior to completing his PhD at VU Amsterdam in 2021, Maarten had a long and distinguished career in wealth management. He co-founded and ran one of Europe's largest and most innovative multi-family offices, VermogensGroep, which was acquired by UBS in 2008, and later he was Executive Chairman of Eligius, the single-family office of the Goldschmeding family in the Netherlands. Maarten was knighted by the King of the Netherlands for his contributions to society, and is the recipient of multiple prestigious awards, including the 2022 Sustainable Investments Award, the 2023 Business Impact Award, and the 2023 VU Crowds Award. He is the founder and director of the VU Center for Enterprise Family Research and is the program director of the Responsible Ownership for Enterprise Families (ROEF) executive education program at VU Amsterdam, which was created and run in partnership with FOX. Maarten has studied and worked with multigenerational families for decades and has identified many of the key topics and priorities that successful families focus on. He shares some of the most important factors and themes that define and propel families' journeys through time and across generations. Possibly the most universal topic that is relevant to all families across the globe and throughout time is preparing the next generation for the future stages of the family journey. Maarten talks about how he sees the importance and centrality of engaging and preparing the rising gen to play a meaningful role in their family enterprise. One important practical suggestion Maarten has for families, and especially for the younger members of the rising gen, is to understand and develop their relationship with wealth. He highlights some of the key challenges rising gen members face and what they can do to overcome them in order to see their role as wealth owners in a positive and healthy way. Er zwemmen steeds meer vrouwelijke zeeschildpadden in onze oceaan. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt dat misschien niet erg, maar zonder die mannetjes worden ze met uitsterven bedreigd. Hoe kan het nou dat er steeds meer vrouwtjes rondzwemmen en wat hebben wij als mens hiermee te maken? Dat vroeg influencer Wildebras aan de Universiteit van Nederland. Bioloog Mátyás Bittenbinder van VU Amsterdam neemt ons mee in Diergaarde Blijdorp om te praten over het seksleven van de zeeschildpad en wat wij kunnen doen om dit dier te redden. De inflatie is deze maand gedaald naar 5,7 procent, terwijl het in mei nog 6,1 procent was. En dat is volgens Bas Jacobs, hoogleraar Economie en Overheidsfinanciën aan de VU Amsterdam, ‘heel goed nieuws'. Volgens Jacobs is de daling geen gevolg van de nieuwe rekenmethode. 'Want ook als je de rekenmethode terugrekent naar de cijfers voor deze maand, zie je ook in de vorige maanden dat de inflatie hoger was dan nu. Dus ongeacht de methode, gaat de inflatie omlaag. Dat is heel goed nieuws', zegt Jacobs in BNR Zakendoen. De nieuwe rekenmethode heeft er volgens hem echter wel voor gezorgd dat we nu iets minder inflatie hebben dan we eerder dachten. 'De oude rekenmethode was gebaseerd op energiecontracten die mensen nu konden afsluiten in de markt, maar niet noodzakelijkerwijs op de energiecontracten die ze al hadden. Daardoor was de inflatie in eerste instantie erg hoog. Dat is nu gecorrigeerd door een nieuwe reeks berekeningen.' Jacobs merkt wel op dat deze nieuwe reeksen niet geldig zijn als ze worden teruggerekend; de oude inflatiecijfers blijven van kracht. Verdere renteverhogingen Hoewel de inflatie afneemt, zijn er nog steeds geluiden, onder andere van president Klaas Knot van de Nederlansche Bank en ECB-president Christine Lagarde, die dit recentelijk in Portugal benadrukte, dat het nog niet voldoende is. Zij pleiten voor verdere renteverhogingen. Verstandig? 'Dat weet ik niet', zegt Jacos. 'Ik denk dat hun eerlijke antwoord moet zijn: volgens mij weten we het ook niet, want we zien allerlei conflicterende signalen.' De ECB kwam vandaag met nieuwe inflatiecijfers, en volgens Jacobs komt de headline inflatie, gemeten over het hele consumptiepakket, fors omlaag. 'Maar ondertussen zien we dat de kerninflatie, waar je de energie- en voedselprijzen uithaalt, een klein tikje (0,1 procent) hoger is geworden. Dat bezorgt al die centrale bankiers hoofdbrekens, want onderliggend wordt het inflatiecijfer niet beter, maar slechter.' Tegelijkertijd zijn er volgens hem wel een paar signalen die duiden op een sterk dalende inflatie. 'De belangrijkste vind ik de geldhoeveelheid M3, dat is de meest ruime definitie van geld die de ECB hanteert. Die zien we echt omlaag knallen en dat heeft ook iets te maken met de slechtere kredietverlening. We zien nu in de cijfers dat de kredietverlening heel hard achteruit kachelt en dat heeft natuurlijk weer alles te maken met die hoge rente.'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a key metric in the overall homeostatic balance of the body. HRV is simply a measure of the variation in time between each heartbeat. This variation is controlled by a primitive part of the nervous system called the autonomic nervous system (ANS). It is largely an indicator of how well the body is handling the Allostatic Load (stress load). I didn't truly grasp HRV until I was exposed to the work of Dr. Marco Altini; so I decided to ask him to come on and help educate my listeners. Joseph chats with Anne Scheel. Anne is currently a postdoc at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam but will be starting as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Methodology and Statistics at Utrecht University in mid October. Anne is a meta-scientist who is interested in which research and publication practices can improve the reproducibility of the published literature, and how researchers can be encouraged to design more falsifiable and informative studies. She did her PhD at Eindhoven University of Technology, followed by a postdoc project at VU Amsterdam and CWTS Leiden. In this episode we chat about her recent publications in which she argues that most claims in the psychology literature are so critically underspecified that attempts to empirically evaluate them are doomed to failure. Het boek van Berend van der Kolk is een interessante kijk op de almaar toenemende behoefte om dingen te meten, in het bedrijf en privé. Het effect van lijstjes met de beste ziekenhuizen, scholen, leerlingen, medewerkers. Goed onderzocht. Berend kijkt naar positieve, en vooral de negatieve kanten van het meten van alles. Het boek heeft 140 pagina's en leest lekker weg en is onderbouwd met verschillende onderzoeken. Voor verdieping staat er een goede boekenlijst achterin. Berend van der Kolk is hoofddocent aan de VU Amsterdam. Wanneer er gekwantificeerd wordt, betekent dat altijd een verarming van informatie. Met meten en cijfers wordt er een mate van grip gesuggereerd. Volgens Berend moeten we af van het mantra 'meten is weten' wanneer het om mensen of organisaties gaat. Cijfers en meten geeft een illusie van grip. Dit wordt mede veroorzaakt door de Anglo-Amerikaanse werkwijze, waar competitie de aanjager is van verbetering. In dit systeem moet je (mensen) vergelijken. Voorbeelden de cito score, het individuele kind en haar ontwikkeling wordt vastgelegd in een cijfer. Motiverende meetsystemen De Anglo-Amerikaanse gedachte is dat de medewerker lui, zelfzuchtig en opportunistisch is. Dus ga je ze monitoren en met die informatie belonen en straffen. De doelstellingstheorie, ambitieuze doelen leiden vaak tot betere prestaties. Het blijven herinneren aan het doel en regelmatig feedback geven is belangrijk hierbij. Intrinsieke en extrinsieke motivatie. Wanneer mensen intrinsiek gemotiveerd zijn dan heeft belonen juist een negatief effect. Ze verliezen vaak zelfs de intrinsieke motivatie wanneer de resultaten gekoppeld wordt aan een beloning. Wanneer mensen zelf kunnen bepalen hoe ze de resultaten behalen kan dat de behoefte aan autonomie vervullen. Meten is macht Meten lijkt objectief, waarbij je met gegevens dingen met elkaar kunt vergelijken die je anders niet met elkaar kunt vergelijken. De beperking is dat om te meten er eerst subjectief wordt bepaald wat wordt gemeten en hoe. Hier gaat Berend ook in op de waarde van ranglijsten, zoals bij universiteiten. Eenvoudige dingen kunnen een enorm effect hebben op de ranglijsten. Het meten van de medewerker lijkt toegenomen tijdens corona doordat mensen op afstand werkten en managers moeite hadden om te zien, ervaren en beoordelen of mensen goed bezig waren. Management by walking around was onmogelijk. Waardoor de medewerkers juist het gevoel kregen dat hun baas ze niet vertrouwd. Experiment van Facebook door mensen verschillende soorten berichten te sturen - positief / negatieve toon - ging mensen zelf ook meer positieve of negatieve berichten plaatsen. Online gedrag veranderen geeft zelfs offline gedragsverandering zoals bij stemmen en aankopen. Indicatorisme Vijf typen indicatorisme: Het uitvoeren van makkelijke, indicator verbeterende taken;Het vermijden van moeilijke, indicator verslechterende taken;Het verbeteren van een indicator voor de korte termijn, ten koste van de langertermijndoelen; Het negeren van taken die niet in een indicator zijn opgenomen;Het manipuleren of frauderen om een indicator te verbeteren. Er staan mooie voorbeelden in dit hoofdstuk. Zoals niet meer ontwikkelen als student, maar punten scoren voor een betere GPA. Of het voorbeeld cobra's in Delhi tijdens de Britse heerschappij. Meten en beloning was ook de oorzaak van de financiële crisis 2007-2008 De wet van Campbell, hoe meer indicator wordt gebruikt bij sociale beslissingen des te meer vatbaar worden mensen voor corruptie en dat deze de sociale processen zal verstoren die juist gepoogd worden te monitoren. In this episode I'm joined by Dr Dany van Dam, where we discuss her research into Neo-Victorian works and postcolonial approaches. We talk about how her research interests developed, the Western-centric focus of the field, and how we can consider new ways to broaden the field. About my guest: Dany has degrees in English and History, and a research MA degree in Literary Studies from Leiden University (the Netherlands). In 2016 she gained her PhD in English Literature from Cardiff University, entitled Making It Right? Writing the Other in Postcolonial Neo-Victorianism. She is the European representative of the British Association for Victorian Studies, and has recently begun a three-year lectureship at Leiden University (where, among other things, she will be teaching contemporary American fiction, of all things). She has also worked at Utrecht University, the Dutch Open University, the University of Amsterdam, at VU Amsterdam, and now at Leiden). She has mainly taught nineteenth-century literature, postcolonial/world literature, and skills courses, though she has also taught a seminar group on medieval and early-modern literature. She has articles published in Neo-Victorian Studies (on sexual and racial cross-dressing), Partial Answers (on Gail Jones' Sixty Lights) and a co-authored article coming out this year in the European Journal of English Studies. In a few months, she also has a chapter coming out in an essay collection on Neo-Victorian Things. In today's episode, we interview Dr. Lena Karvovskaya. Lena did herPhD in theoretical linguistics at Leiden University. After her PhD, she took up a job as a data manager at Utrecht University Library and then went to the library of VU Amsterdam to become a community manager for research data management. We learn from Lena's research on endangered languages during her Master's studies and her work on possession in languages during her PhD. We also look at the role of a community manager within the modern university library, and the changing role of the library in the university. In this episode Lauren Moore joins us to discuss Marian apparitions, what they are, why they are important, how they impact Roman Catholicism, and how they should be viewed and understood from an Evangelical perspective.Lauren Moore has been serving with Pioneers in southwest France for almost 12 years. During that time she has been involved in four different church plants, each in a different stage: the Basque Coast Baptist Church (now an established church with a pastor), the Surf Church Hossegor (a small but growing church that started in 2009), and a house church in Bidache (started in 2019). In 2015 she helped plant Les Cairns, the first evangelical church in Lourdes, a Catholic pilgrimage city, in over 40 years. Her experience in Catholicism allows her to train other missionaries in understanding Roman Catholicism to reach Europe. She is also currently completing her doctoral thesis with VU Amsterdam and Union School of Theology (Wales), focusing on the impact and influence of apparitions of Mary.
