Dr. Erson Religioso—aka Dr. E—has been in the PT game for over two decades, and he's experienced just about every high and low the profession can offer. In this candid conversation, we dive into his transformation from a manual therapy "guru in the making" to a humble coach focused on empowering patients. Erson shares his journey through academic elitism, ego-driven learning, and eventual cognitive dissonance that led him to radically rethink how he practices, teaches, and communicates with patients. We talk about the origin of his eclectic approach, the power of simplification over complexity, and how clinicians can thrive by embracing mentorship, reflection, and evidence-based evolution. We also dig into his business ventures—from creating the EDGE Mobility System to building a thriving online education platform—and how social media changed the game for him (and what changed when it all came crashing down). Whether you're a new grad, a seasoned clinician, or somewhere in between, this one's packed with lessons you don't want to miss.Learn more about our guest at:
If you have experience with the McKenzie Method or MDT, you know the saying, "End Range is Where the Magic Happens." Repeated end range loading is one of the easiest and most empowering self treatment options out there for clinicians to teach their patients. In this episode, Dr. E goes over 3 cases of really loading patients into end range knee extension, all of which significantly improved their severely limited flexion. What do you think? Have you ever used two person techniques or belted down a femur to load the tibia into extension? If we do it for the pelvis and repeated extension in lying, why not the knee into extension? Do you have any pain in your body and are interested in what to do to just get out of the pain quickly? What if you could be on a program that is both a fitness program and doctor-supervised? Together with his wife Sarah, our today's guest is the co-founder of Functional Effect located at Downers Grove, Illinois. Not only did Dr. Tyler Reynolds obtained his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the National University of Health Science, he also completed over 250+ hours of post-graduate studies in Functional Rehabilitation with specialties in shoulder dysfunction and The McKenzie Method. Coming from a medical family, Dr. Tyler already knew that it's gonna be it for him too. He enjoys sports and working out, and thought that he could help people in this way. He started in the fitness industry with clients that have both cognitive and physical limitations. He has a strong desire to help people achieve optimal health and wellness. His number one goal is to eliminate pain and maximize function in each person he works with. As parents of two beautiful children, Dr. Tyler takes care of running the business, treating the patients, and training the clients. On the other hand, his wife does more of the nutrition and life-coaching using her years of experience in the fitness industry and degree in Psychology to effectively guide and connect to their clients. Also helping him understand people a lot more. Their approach is different from other fitness businesses in such a way that they have developed a system and a process to create a customized program that produces customized results for each of their clients. They believe that everyone moves and lives differently including different goals as to why they want to work with someone like the Functional Effect. Functional Effect was born with the aspiration to have a functional-effective gym that first gets people out of pain, then to moving really well, and get them to do so much more in a pain-free life and live the way they ultimately desire. Dr. Tyler shared that he is more of “the pain guy” as his goal is about getting someone to his office, treating their chronic pain and movement issues, then get them back on the floor in training and fix the rest as well. He wants to get his patients out of pain but he knows that they are still in dysfunction. So to move from pain to dysfunction and to function, he needed to train them in the actual fit/gym-side and get them so far away from pain that even if they get back to dysfunction, it would take a lot of work to get them back to pain. In short, they wanted to discover the dysfunction– the “why” that puts a person in pain in the first place and then fix it through their fitness programming which specializes on people that are in pain and have movement issues, helping them “see the light.” Dr. Tyler, along with the whole Functional Effect team, wanted it to be a family and a community with a very friendly and supportive environment where everyone knows each other's name. Basically, a business model that is very much about relationships.
As a former competitive weightlifter, strength coach, and now Chair of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at Vanderbilt Medical School, Dr. D.J. Kennedy specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of back issues that nearly all of us experience- including chronic back pain. “The numbers are 80 to 90% of people have low back pain at some point in their life,” says Dr. Kennedy in the bonus episode, “which tells me 10 to 20% of people have a bad memory.” Why is back pain so prevalent and persistent? Dr. Kennedy points to the complexity of spinal anatomy as a primary factor. "For the spine, we have L4-L5, L5- S1, “ says Kennedy, himself a back pain sufferer. “We have discs, we have facets, we have all kinds of things that can cause problems.” Formerly a Stanford Medical School Professor, Dr. Kennedy emphasizes both the variety of back issues patients can experience, and the necessity of prescribing a wide array of treatments to address these issues. While at Stanford, Dr. Kennedy trained in the Gokhale Method featured in our previous episode. He then began recommending it to patients, many of whom saw positive results. Are you a frequent back pain sufferer? Do you find yourself feeling back stiffness you thought might never happen to you? Tune in to learn from a spine expert who values posture-based therapies encompassing our complete movement chain- from foot angle to neck alignment. In episode 368 we're beginning season 11 and we're highlighting actual patients who have a remarkable story and noteworthy results through a thorough movement and symptom assessment and treatment process and when possible we have their therapist join us too. We're allowing the experiences and perspectives of these patients to reinforce the potential that exists with a proper mechanical exam and through a sound biopsychosocial approach for common musculoskeletal conditions. Our first patient is Makesh and he's accompanied by his physical therapist Dr. Rhad Brown. Makesh struggled with persisting leg pain, sciatica as it's commonly called, which failed to resolve with conventional medical care. You'll hear him describe a previous episode of leg pain involving his other leg and how that led to surgery, what he had been told about this new condition and how he had little hope that he might be able to avoid a second surgery. He'll share how he discovered he could get control over his pain and, with some education from Dr. Brown and his own stick-to-itiveness, he is fully recovered and staying that way more than 2 years later. For Makesh, he tried the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy and it worked like magic.

Welcome to the 6th episode of Health Science Coach, a guide to your healthcare career. Today we take a look into the life of a Chiropractor Like - Subscribe - Comment Dr. Chris Harris' Chiropractic Story: The year was 2011, and Chris's business required a tremendous amount of travel, which added a lot of stress to his personal life. He spent much of his time on planes and driving to see customers. The pain started between his shoulder blades, and soon began to travel down to his left elbow, and finally felt numbness in his left pinky and ring finger. He was losing strength in that arm. His friend and family physician tried steroids called trigger injections; however, the symptoms persisted. It became difficult to sleep and he woke up several times every night in pain. The physician explained that the next step was referred to a surgeon. The thought of surgery was terrifying because Chris's mother went through seven neck and back surgeries. The surgeons helped her, but after each surgery, degeneration would set in above and below the area of surgery. Eventually, she became dependent upon opioids just to establish a tolerable quality of life. The long-term use of pain meds took a great toll on her health as organs began to fail. First were kidneys and then her bowels. The doctors did everything they could, but she passed away. Afraid that history was about to repeat itself Chris's wife encouraged him to try Chiropractic. His physician advised you have nothing to lose. Dr. Alan Dabbs took x-rays of his neck and identified bone spurs in the lower cervical (neck) area. He concluded that the spurs may be putting pressure on a nerve that radiates from the spine down to his left hand. Dr. Dabbs adjusted his neck and Chris felt a lightning bolt-type sensation into his numb fingers. At first, he was stunned and then realized that was the first feeling in his fingers within the last few weeks. Dr. Dabbs explained that it might take several adjustments to get complete relief. And after three adjustments Chris regained normal sensations in his left arm and started to regain strength. He no longer needed pain meds and avoided surgery. The first thought that crossed his mind was “What if” my mother would have known about chiropractic? In high school, Chris dreamt of becoming a doctor, but life took him in a different direction. However, this event had such a profound impact that he decided to move to Overland Park, KS to pursue a Doctor of Chiropractic. He was in search of the most objective ways to diagnose and treat patients so that he could provide the same results that he experienced, and although he couldn't help his mother there would be literally thousands of people that would benefit from Chiropractic care. During school, Dr. Chris became a certified specialist in the Upper Cervical Technique because of its ability to objectively diagnose and treat chronic cases. It was the only technique that helped his wife with her migraines and fibromyalgia. Additionally, Chris became certified McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy for the spine, Acupuncture, and Activator as an alternative for patients that preferred not to be adjusted manually. The result of this training has qualified him to use x-rays, orthopedic tests, functional assessments, and multiple other tools to diagnose and resolve patients' problems. When you visit Dr. Chris he wants you to know that you enter the office as a patient, but when you walk out you become part of the Apex family. You will be treated with respect and the goal will always be to help YOU achieve the best health possible! pQAc6FWYQUmavdqHO7Xd

Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast Description - Season 2: Episode 13 The Physical Therapist and the Old NerdIn our Season 2 Finale, Gery and Julie welcome Dr. Chelsea Walter, a physical therapist from the Lebanon, Ohio area who has started her own, in-home/in-gym practice. Chelsea talks PT and the various differences between therapies as well as helping you to understand how it’s much more than just something you do after an injury. About Healthy Movement Physical Therapy and Wellness and Dr. Chelsea WalterHealthy Movement Physical Therapy and Wellness, LLC is a mobile, concierge PT, and wellness practice founded by Dr. Chelsea Walter in 2020. This practice was born out of wanting to help people in a way that was lacking with traditional physical therapy. Chelsea spent five years working in an outpatient PT clinic for a local hospital network. During this time, she learned that the insurance-based model squeezed too many patients into one day and left the therapist minimal personal time with the client. The choice to go out-of-network was easy. Outside of the corporate model and without insurance dictating care, she is now able to give clients the attention they deserve and to treat them as more than just an injury or another insurance claim. (On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/healthymovementPT) FAQs - https://www.healthymovementpt.com/faqsChelsea’s background is in physical therapy with an emphasis on the treatment of spinal conditions. She graduated from Saint Louis University in 2014 with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy and completed undergraduate work at the same institution. From 2018 to 2019, she was a post-graduate resident with the McKenzie Institute where she achieved certification in the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) and board certification in orthopedics (OCS). Chelsea enjoys working with clients who are active in the gym or with recreational sports. She has led an active lifestyle from early on in life and enjoys hiking, travel, and spending time with family. John Thompson is a physiotherapist and lead instructor for the McKenzie institutes in Europe. This episode is dedicated to the McKenzie method for treating and solving lower back pain. The McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT) - MDT is a philosophy of active patient involvement and education which is trusted and used by practitioners and patients all over the world for back, neck and extremity problems. This approach continues to be one of the most researched physical therapy-based methods available. KEY TAKEAWAYS The system is a complete system of assessment diagnosis and treatment. It aims to treat anyone for spinal pain or extremity pain that can be improved through movement. It aims to move the patient to the end of their movement range and monitor how their symptoms behave. The McKenzie system aims to identify recognised patterns. The 3 patterns seen the most are derangement, dysfunction and postural. Postural – pain when in a particular position for an extended amount of time – this is about education to change the movement that is causing the pain. Dysfunction – tight or shortened tissue always related to back or neck with the pain only happening when the tissue is stretched. Stretching out therapy encourages the tissue to loosen. Derangement – variable in presentation with a loss in the range of movement that is not consistent. You can achieve a rapid change through exercise. The diagnosis and classification is based on the symptoms shown by the patients. The McKenzie method uses therapist techniques during both assessment and treatment and for those patients who can't move themselves it is an essential component. In episode 17 of the Princeton Spine & Joint Center podcast, Dr. Zinovy Meyler, Co-Director of the Interventional Spine Program at Princeton Spine and Joint Center, had a great conversation with Sunita Mani, PT, DPT, MBA, CEAS, who is the Director of Outpatient Rehabilitation at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center’s Outpatient Rehabilitation at Plainsboro & South Brunswick. They had a really good in depth conversation about McKenzie method. McKenzie method is a method of treating primarily the spine, or at least that was the focus of the conversation. If you have any interest in treating the spine, any issues with the spine, if you have any loved ones with issues with the spine, you may find this conversation very helpful and useful because they delve into the importance of ergonomics, posture, the approach of McKenzie, what it's based on. They also talk about how to be a better physical therapy patient, essentially what does it take to get as much out of the treatment as possible. And as this approach implies, this can apply to anything and if you have ever gone through any type of rehabilitation, taking an active role in your care and specifics of that as we talk about in this podcast would be very useful for you, so enjoy. Sunita Mani, PT, DPT, MBA, CEAS Director of Outpatient Rehabilitation at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center’s Outpatient Rehabilitation at Plainsboro & South Brunswick. Sunita fell in love with physical therapy when she volunteered at a hospital when she was 16 years old. She was fortuitously assigned to the physical therapy department & was immediately drawn to the change she saw in people, both physically and mentally, and knew she wanted to be part of it. She completed her Bachelor of Science, Master of Physical Therapy & Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 2005, after which she completed her Master of Business Administration from Holy Family University in Philadelphia. Sunita was recruited in 2012 to the University Medical Center of Princeton (now Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center) to start outpatient rehabilitation on the hospital campus and serve as the Director of Outpatient Rehabilitation in Plainsboro; she now also manages physical therapy at the South Brunswick campus. Sunita has taken advanced coursework in posture and ergonomics, thus earning her CEAS (Certified Ergonomic Assessment Specialist). Over the course of her career, Sunita has had extensive education in orthopedics with a focus on manual therapy and functional biomechanics; she is a McKenzie-trained physical therapist whose clinical passion is the treatment of the spine. Sunita successfully uses the McKenzie approach (MDT: mechanical diagnosis and therapy) in her treatment of patients and finds it extremely valuable and beneficial for patient with neck & back pain. Dr. Zinovy Meyler is a board certified, fellowship trained physician specializing in the non-operative care of spine, joint, muscle and nerve pain. His 20 plus years of experience offers a unique blend of exercise based therapy and manual therapy to achieve the best outcomes possible. In this podcast Matthew talks about the benefits of The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis And Therapy (MDT). The McKenzie Method is a biopsychosocial system of musculoskeletal care emphasizing patient empowerment and self-treatment. This system of diagnosis and patient management applies to acute, subacute and chronic conditions of the spine and extremities. It offers a reliable and practical approach that focuses on "what patients need" and not on "what therapists want to do".He also talks about the difference between the unavoidable reality of pain and the choice of suffering as well as the distinction between the reasons to see your general physician vs someone like a physical therapist. ——————————————————————————————Find Matthew Goodemote at:——————————————————————————————WEBSITE: https://www.goodemotept.com/ ——————————————————————————————Follow 7th Helix At——————————————————————————————INSTAGRAM: https://instagr.am/7th_HelixTWITTER: https://twitter.com/7th_HelixYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxOuy7o_q7thYhuwzg8b9rwFACEBOOK: https://fb.me/7th.HelixSPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/show/51GTz2KSoNvkEMU4nJ0eOPITUNES: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/7th-helix/id1467003306WEBSITE: https://SeventhHelix.podbean.com

It may be universally true that the world is always changing, but it seems like one would be hard-pressed to find a time that the pace of human “innovation” has been such a double-edged sword. While I fully believe in the progress of technology, there is ample evidence that there are some negative side effects. For instance, how many overweight people do you see these days, how many times have you had a half-baked conversation with someone who was mostly paying attention to their phones and whatever your beliefs about how we should handle health care, how many people do you know these days that just don’t feel all that well? Today’s guest on the Hess’s Heroes podcast is Ryan Tauzell. I got hooked up with Ryan a little over a year ago when I wrenched my back picking up a 50 pound dumbbell in a hotel gym in California after a long flight. We describe the turn of events in how Ryan helped me in our discussion, but let’s just say that I got something different than expected. And it turned out to be really effective AND intriguing to me. Ryan works as a physical therapist at Choice PT in Christiansburg, VA and is certified in the McKenzie Method. We talk a lot about how one can recover from injuries, how much of our pain in life today is a product of modern lifestyles, Ryan also offers up some great advice on how to leverage technology for good, how to combat “text neck,” answers questions about the benefit of a standing desk and as usual talks about his influences and makes some brass tax recommendations of some things you can do to make yourself better. I asked Ryan to come on because I think he is a bit of a miracle worker, but I also really love talking with him. His enthusiasm for his work is palpable. This guy has found his calling and if it didn’t cost me a co-pay, I’d visit him for work just to gab with him. Luckily he enjoys a cold beverage much as I do and that affords us alternate opportunities. I hope that you enjoy today’s conversation with today’s Hess’s Hero who I am giving the moniker Dr. Spine.
