On today's all-local podcast, the trio of Devon, Norris and Jer talk about some new restaurants in Detroit. They start by discussing Lady of the House, which just opened again in the Core City neighborhood. Devon went there and says the food is still good, but wonders if they should try new dishes since Detroit has so many different restaurants now. They also talk about how Core City is becoming a cool place where lots of young people like to hang out. Then they talk about a new restaurant called Javier's on Brush Street. It serves food that mixes Southwest and Mexican styles. Next, they discuss Parlay Gaming, which has fancy sports bar vibes, in the old location of Beer Exchange on Washington Boulevard. Devon went and talks about the tons of food choices and many TVs to watch sports. They're also planning to add special rooms for cigars and a secret-style hangout spot. The friends talk about how important it is to make places where everyone feels welcome in Detroit. At the end, we have an important conversation about how people from different backgrounds feel when they go to restaurants in Detroit. What goes into a welcoming spot? We ask listeners to tell them about places where everyone feels comfortable and welcome. Daily Detroit shares what to know and where to go in Detroit every day. Mostly located near the shore of Lake Washington, Lake Washington Boulevard is a piece of land owned by the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation that runs from the Montlake neighborhood to Seward Park. It was included by John Charles Olmsted in his 1903 plan for Seattle's park and boulevard system to capitalize on the city's natural features, such as the lake, parks with trees, and vistas of the distant mountains across the lake. The boulevard was built in phases, with the first phase being completed in Washington Park. The last section was inaugurated in 1917, and more than five miles were finished in time for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, which was held on the campus of the University of Washington. Though the forests and clear cuts that made up the early views along the Boulevard have long since been replaced with homes and development, the natural beauty of the area is still very much evident to this day.Listen now to learn more about the history of one of Seattle's most beautiful drives!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at: https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!
Fluent Fiction - Hebrew: A Vegetarian's Triumph: Finding Joy in Unexpected Places Find the full episode transcript, vocabulary words, and more:fluentfiction.org/a-vegetarians-triumph-finding-joy-in-unexpected-places Story Transcript:He: המסעדה הייתה נמוכה וחמה כשתמר, יוסף ואביגיל נכנסו לתוכה. אור נמוך האיר את השולחנות העץ החשופים, הוריד לאוויר את קורו, והבניהנים הנאוויים של תל אביב הפכו לצועניים חמימים.En: The restaurant was low and warm as Tamar, Joseph, and Abigail entered it. Low light illuminated the exposed wooden tables, lowered the temperature, and transformed the fashionable residents of Tel Aviv into warm hummus. En: A smile blossomed on Tamar's face as she ordered the only vegetarian meal from the menu, framed on the outskirts of the famous meat restaurant sown in Washington Boulevard. Joseph scanned the prices on his own meal; Abigail looked curiously at Tamar. En: One hundred and fifty shekels for a delicate veggie burger, in the atmosphere of the first Sabbath, Tel Aviv appeared bustling and crowded. Tamar put all her effort into the restaurant. Abigail clarified a closed word: it is, of course, protein-rich. And maybe that's what Tamar began to say. She was praising the flavors, quinoa, even the luxurious herb stuffing. Joseph and Abigail, cutting into their wrapped steaks, spread on the highchair and cursed the repair guy.He: אבל פה, עם החמאה הפרחה על הלחם הצרוב, הרבה היה בכחה לעשות, לשכנע, לשכנע אותם שהארוחה שלה אף טובה יותר. הצמחוני – אממה, שזה מכיל בו משהו נוסף לגוף. אולי זה הרוח של תל אביב, שנישאה את שמחת החיים שלה.En: But here, with the butter blooming on the toasted bread, she had a lot of power to do, to persuade, to persuade them that her meal was even better. The vegetarian - well, it contains something extra for the body. Maybe it's the spirit of Tel Aviv, carrying its joy of life. He: קנה מתוך שמחת החיים שהיא שלו. "מה מצחיק?" שאל יוסף. "אתם", תמר הצעירה. "דמיינו שאתם מוצאים ארוחה צמחונית במסעדה של בשרים".En: Buy from the joy of life that is his. "What's funny?" Joseph asked. "You," young Tamar said. "Imagine finding a vegetarian meal in a meat restaurant."He: הם צחקו יחד, בחמימות של ירח עגול, עם הרחף התאוות חזיר שנכנס לפני האזיקים. לא זו בלבד שהם סך הכל הבינו: שהם - ממש כמו אותה ארוחה הצמחונית - יכולים להיות מוצאים מקום במסעדת בשרים, הם גם הבינו שאפשר להיות שם מאוד, מאוד טעים.En: They laughed together, in the warmth of a round moon, with the wafting aroma of bacon that entered before the sighs. Not only did they finally understand: that they - just like that vegetarian meal - could find a place in a meat restaurant, they also understood that they could be very, very tasty there. In the inaugural episode of House of Lou, St. Louis Magazine Design editor-and-chief Veronica Theodoro talks to interior designer Annie Brahler of Euro Trash. Annie is known for her longstanding commitment to historic preservation, as well as for designing spaces—from the kitchen to the living room—that are layered with vintage and antique wares. No detail is too small for the designer, and it shows in her award-winning work across the country. Annie's Webster Groves home was recently featured in the September 2023 issue of St. Louis Magazine, and we got an inside look at her studio space, also in Webster Groves, a few years ago. Listen in as Annie and Veronica share design ideas for the home, including tips for buying vintage and antiques in St. Louis (or, in some cases, "borrowing" them from loved ones). Veronica also recommends a new exhibition at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation that will both enlighten and inspire you. There's so much to see in St. Louis, if you know where to look. A man demanded money from a bank in Arlington, Virginia, and held four adults and a child hostage on Tuesday before police were able to take him into custody, authorities say. The man's name was not immediately released. The five people, including a child, are safe after the man barricaded them inside the Wells Fargo bank in the 3100 block of Washington Boulevard, in the Clarendon area, Arlington County police said. The group included patrons and employees of the bank. No injuries were reported. A hostage negotiator responded to the standoff.“Preliminary information indicates the suspect entered the bank, implied he had a weapon, and demanded money,” police said shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday. “The suspect remains barricaded inside the bank with patrons/employees. Police remain on scene working to resolve the incident.” Video footage showed a number of officers in the area, with streets shut down. People in the area were advised to expect police activity. The suspect has been taken into custody without any further incident.

Be it on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (“America's First Super Highway,” and a model for the national interstate highway system), the massive Brilliant Viaduct over Washington Boulevard, or Skybus (futuristic transit system that never took off), we'll explore all the different ways to get around Pittsburgh past and present. The true crime cases we've covered on this podcast have all been horrifying; to even think people would be capable of such monstrosities is a terrible thought. This case is one of the worst I have encountered. We only hope that the victims and their families were able to find some peace. On April 22, 1974, six men in total, drove in two vans to the Hi-Fi Shop at 2323 Washington Boulevard, Ogden. They came with the intention of robbing the store and killing everyone who got in their way. There were two employees working that night, one teenage boy and his mother, and the father of one of the employees. Only two of them left alive, and suffered horrible traumatic injuries as a result. Stay safe out there. With love, Saaniya and Maddie x Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hi-Fi_murders https://www.ranker.com/list/ogden-hi-fi-facts/jessika-gilbert https://www.grunge.com/221896/the-untold-truth-about-the-mysterious-murders-of-gilgo-beach/ https://en-academic.com/dic.nsf/enwiki/1348104
At precisely five minutes to 5:00 on December 31, 1959 at Walters’ Public Bath House No. 2 at 900 Washington Boulevard, a man was taking the very last shower in the very last public bath house in Baltimore. It was 5:00 exactly when he shut down his shower he shut down, too, the era of public baths in Baltimore. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With this series, we will be looking over what developments are happening in every city across the Bay Area. Many of you that are local here see projects and construction happening but did you know that most cities have plans to redevelop areas over the next decade? Let's dive into Santa Clara! Santa Clara has some of the most ambitious plans for all of the Bay Area. Over its 50+ year history, Fremont has evolved from an agricultural township to the metropolitan city it is today. When the City incorporated in 1956, its boundaries included five established small towns: Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, Niles and Warm Springs, made up of thousands of acres of farmland, open hills, salt ponds, and marshes. The five original towns have grown and been joined together by new neighborhoods and business districts. Fremont is now the second largest city in Alameda County and the fourth largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area. The city covers approximately 57,000 acres, which includes 7,400 acres of water and salt ponds located in San Francisco Bay and 49,600 acres of land. About 45 percent of the land area is permanent open space, including hillside and wetland preserves, grazing land, cemeteries, regional parks and trails, and city parks. About 26 percent is dedicated to streets, railroads, freeways, public facilities, and public rights of way. The remaining 29 percent consists of land designated for residential, commercial, and industrial uses, with residential uses representing a majority of the acreage. So where is development happening? There are 4 main areas. There is the Centerville, Central Fremont, Irvington, and Warm Springs sections that are the focus. 3 of these sections are around the BART stations and future Irvington BART station One of the longest development projects in the pipeline is the new Irvington Bart Station. It will be located in the Irvington District at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Osgood Road, approximately halfway between the existing Fremont BART Station and the Warm Springs/South Fremont BART Station. This development was first approved by the BART Board in 1992, but due to insufficient funding, development was delayed until county voters passed a measure to specifically include funding for it in 2014. The anticipated construction is estimated to begin in 2022 and projected to be open in 2026. If we have seen the previous time schedules, don't be surprised with further delays! Let's take a look at the housing side. Warm Springs is where most of the developments are happening right now. One of the areas is the Warm Springs Village Master plan which is built mostly by Toll Brothers. This area will house up to 1,000 residential units. Homes are currently available and are priced between $750,000 for a 1 BR all the way up to $1.55M for a 3BR. The other area is for Lennar homes. They currently have homes available for move in and will be building at least for several years since they plan to build 2,200 units. They currently are releasing phase 1 which already has hundreds of people moved in. Check out my video here as the current area is called Innovation. Prices range from $842,000 to $1.2M and are all townhome styles. I hope this was helpful to see what is coming down the pipeline in amazing Fremont. Leave a comment with what you think and if there are any cities I should cover next! -- If you are tired of renting in the Bay Area, are a homeowner looking to do a trade up for a bigger home, or are wanting to sell your home for top dollar, I would love to connect!
After closing Lake Washington Boulevard to through traffic for months, the city has opened the street up to cars again. But the closure was so popular that the city is considering making it permanent.

It is time to grab a cup of tea (Earl Grey Hot for the Trekkies), strap in and get ready for another episode from the Nerds we all look forward to each week. Also grab a slice of birthday cake and help us wish the DJ a Happy Birthday, yep our favourite funny guy is another year older. Now on with the show; that’s right, we once again have another fun packed episode in which we entertain you with some of the latest topics in Nerd pop culture news. This week we start off with news of an animated series coming from Netflix of Magic the Gathering. While details are limited at the moment it is something to look forward to. The boys have some interesting points to consider with this one, and the chief among them is based on who determines what is canon for stories. Also what is possibly the coolest car commercial at the moment?Next up we look at why brushing your teeth is more important than just to protect your teeth and good breathe. The implications for this are actually quite important, particularly if you want to remember where you hid your favourite comics and figurines. Once again Buck has found a research article that we should take a moment to look at that highlights some very interesting and disturbing facts. So, remember to brush, rinse and floss if you want to have the best health in the nursing home.Next up Professor brings us news that Tesla is now becoming a rolling game console. That’s right, Tesla cars are gaming consoles with the release of another game to play on the in car tablet style interactive screen. Unfortunately you are not able to play them while driving, um, oops, maybe that’s a good thing. We also hear about what some people have been doing with their Teslas that has been noticed by Elon, and trust us, this is not something we recommend. The games played this week show us that Buck truly is a grumpy old man, and that DJ is a fan of Clint Eastwood. But honestly tough, who isn’t a fan of Clit? What game is this, listen in or cheat and scroll down to the link. DJ has been playing Mortal Kombat 11 and still hasn’t exhibited any signs of PTSD, lots of other funny behaviour, but hey, that is normal. Game of Grow - Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Personal Development
We are back! You are now listening to the Game of Grow Podcast and I’m your host, Muoyo Okome. Episode 5 of the most dangerous business podcast in the world! It doesn’t matter where you start or where you are right now. If you are willing to develop your skills, study success, and work tenaciously over a long period of time, your future can be WAY bigger than your past. That is my promise to you. Take for example my man James. If you read the very first of the Hustler’s Corner, the weekly update I send via email, you already know this story. If not, you’re missing out… Make sure to sign up for the Hustler’s Corner. Go to gameofgrow.com and submit your name and email using the form at the very top of the page. And if you like, email me at hi@gameofgrow.com and I will personally forward you volume one, which I happen to be very proud of. Today we are talking about how to start. Well James started, I am super excited about James and his progress in the app game! To quickly share the story, James is one of my App Moguls who joined me over a year ago before the program was even really a program. He won Co-Member of the Month for December when his first app Mobile Fax for iPhone went live -- well designed app which fills a real need in the marketplace (yes people are still sending faxes). I always advise people to get to market as quickly, cheaply, and imperfectly as possible, as the real learnings begin when you're live, making adjustments. No one ever listens, and neither did James, haha (neither did I at first), but now he is live and getting those real learnings from the market, and it is a joy seeing him trying many things, adjusting, and truly becoming an entrepreneur. I've already seen him plow through several setbacks on the way to nearly 100 PAYING SUBSCRIBERS who will pay month after month. This will only increase and compound, but he had to actually start and get out there to make it happen. Round of applause for James (and feel free to review his app if you like it.. no need to subscribe/pay to do so). I’ve saved the link for you at gameofgrow.com/faxapp. Definition of the Game of Grow... Review of the Week Alright, so before we dive into today’s topic… You guys are killing it on the subscribes & reviews. We’ve crossed 50 reviews, so let’s see how quickly we can make it to 100. We’ve crossed 1000 downloads. I think 2000 will happen a lot quicker. In case you didn’t know, podcasts are notoriously hard to grow, but thanks to you guys passing on the word guerilla style… very grass roots, we are doing exactly that. So I’ve been thinking. One thing I want to do in true Game of Grow fashion is to be extremely transparent with the downloads and the metrics… this is not something youre going to get on most shows, I want you to see the true impact of what happens, when you listen, subscribe, review, recommend. That is how we are growing it bit by bit. And it’s my job to bring you top level content that makes you proud to spread the word. And as we hit those milestones faster and faster, I am going to figure out some cool ways that I can reward you individually and collectively to celebrate. It should be a lot of fun! But yea, anyway… Each week we feature one review of the week as a way of saying thank you for helping us to grow the show and the movement. And to that end, for the very first time. I wanted to make sure I featured somebody new, who I don’t know personally (or at least I can’t decipher the username). So big shoutout to TuneJunez. Without further ado… “Sit back and relax as Muoyo Okome tells listeners about the trials and tribulations of not only his life and the app business but the marketing and savviness needed to become a true self-made entrepreneur. Love the length of time and detail with each pod episode. Each episode stands on its own but together it flows like beautiful African fabric to give listeners what they need: advice and positive energy to pursue their dreams in any field they’re in. I expect the episodes to keep getting better but it’s a great start that’s far and I am entertained and intrigued by what’s yet to come and the guests that will eventually arrive to supplement Muoyo’s words of wisdom.” And again, that review came from TuneJunez. Thank you so much. Please feel free to email me at hi@gameofgrow.com so I can say thanks… and I would love to let the community know a bit more about you. So go ahead and subscribe and leave a review on iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud or your podcast player of choice… and perhaps I’ll be featuring you next! And guys… after you subscribe and leave your review, please email me to let me know that you did, as well as a bit about you for 2 reasons. 1) it’s great to learn more about you guys in the community 2) gives me the opportunity to share more about you when I do the review of the day Alright, so moving on… Today's Episode... On this episode…. We are discussing How to Start. How do you take the first step in your entrepreneurial venture. First thing to establish is that there are 1,001 ways to do this. Anyone who tells you that there is one path alone is just lying to you. It’s not true! There are many ways to get it done. What I want to share with you is how I’ve done it. What I’ve done right, What I’ve learned, what I could’ve done way better, and I have a feeling this is going to be a more helpful approach for you. Cool? So let’s revisit my origin story which you’ve heard from a couple different angles in episodes 1 & 3… I think episode 3 is particularly relevant to this question, but we are going to go more in depth here on the “start” thing… on the question of START. Our story starts with me working as a “Business Manager” for one of the biggest technology companies in the world. In reality I was mostly managing spreadsheets and managing not to go crazy. Throughout life, I had mostly done all the things we’ve all been told to do… go to school, study hard, get good grades, and that is what I did. For whatever reason after both college and after graduate school, I was rejected from A LOT of jobs that I applied to, before I finally landed this opportunity, and I was making the most money I ever made in my life, the elusive six figures… I could not complain about that. Like a lot of folks in the corporate world, all I wanted to do was do well… dominate in my job, get recognition and promotions, more responsibility, and more money. I didn’t necessarily care about climbing up the ladder (I always had a vision that eventually I would work for me… I didn’t necessarily think it would be that soon), but making money was important to me. The struggle ended up being that I was working long hours... days, nights, and weekends in a job that I did not enjoy, where I was not learning much on a daily or weekly basis (funny story: when I visited my business school on a couple occasions on recruiting trips, while speaking to the students, I actually realized that my mind was atrophying, and I was getting dumber from lack of using it)... and I was pretty certain from their actions and our interactions, that the people I worked with… the higher ups, did not respect me. The worst part: I was starting to internalize some of this negativity and negative energy in the atmosphere (if you are in an environment anything like this, make sure to go the extra mile to fortify yourself against it) and had even begun to wonder if I was smart, competent, or capable. I gained a lot of weight and I just was not feeling good about myself overall. I wondered how it was that no matter what I did and how hard I worked, I kept finding my way back to the exact same familiar place… utter & complete failure Then, because things were not going poorly enough, I discovered that I was being demoted or moved into a position that I wasn’t actually trained for or credentialed for, and wouldn’t be able to contribute. It’s kind of like they were just looking for a place to park me because I was not seen as a valuable member of the organization. (I am grateful that they didn’t fire me though while all this was going on, and I was able to collect that check!) I still remember crying quietly to myself in my car driving on Washington Boulevard at nighttime on the way home. And it was around then I made a decision that something had to change. And for any of you who are going through something similar… who are going through a terrible time professionally, and perhaps even personally, I want you to pay attention to this story, and hopefully you can use it to your advantage and it can serve you as well as it has served me. And then you know the story… I was running around frantically… I had massive energy…. Just looking for a way out. Anything else that was legal that I could potentially pursue, whether it was another job or an entrepreneurial opportunity. Negative energy can be powerful fuel. Especially when you feel like you’re out of options. I was looking at everything, and I came across an entrepreneur doing mobile apps. I studied him for a while, and said “hey, I think this could be my thing” I loved that individuals and small teams were succeeding with it and I loved that you could build them one time and benefit many times over… not that there was no work to it… that doesn’t exist, but your work could be magnified. The apps kept on working without getting tired, complaining, or taking breaks, and you could always add more to the team!I decided I was going to build a big app portfolio, so that out of this portfolio, some would be big winners, and overall they would work together to replace my income and free me financially. That’s where I dove in and invested in a book and then 2 different online courses to educate myself. I started with small results, but it was enough to show me more was possible if I kept on pushing. 936 downloads for $81.78. I then knew that my biggest problem was more downloads, so I dove deep on marketing and was able to reach a $1000-$2000 monthly revenue plateau. I wasn't there yet and ran into a number of problems, so I just tried to address them one by one when they arose That December, the momentum started to compound and things really started to take off and the numbers started to make sense financially and I knew I was on my way I was getting more money than I had originally hoped for, I was experiencing the freedom I dreamed of, and I was being looked to for leadership, and having the pleasure of helping a lot of other people with their own journeys… Which is exactly what we’re here to do today. I hope by sharing my story and my experience that I can be helpful to you. And I am still on that journey to this day. Just because you experience success once doesn’t mean that you don’t have to continue earning it or that there are not different levels to unlock, but today we are talking about how to start… or even how to re-start. Maybe you’ve experienced success already and you want to build another thing. I’ve been there… Maybe you’ve experienced a failure or 5… I’ve been there… Maybe a little bit of both... Based on my own experience that we just recapped, here is roughly how I would approach it. Again keep in mind there are many other ways. This is my take: Make a decision that you’re going to start (and that you’re going to finish)I didn’t know how I was going to get from here to there, but I knew for damn sure that I needed to make a change, no matter what it was going to take and no matter how long it would take. In my experience when I approach with that kind of conviction and that level of fervor and determination, I have a much better success rate in getting what I want than if I just go through the motions or “give it a try”And another hack I like to use in combination with this is to make an investment so I have some skin in the game, and I am less likely to forget about the idea and move onFor example, the night in the coffee shop when I came up with Game of Grow, minutes later I was signing up for the social channels and buying the domains. Not as huge an investment in this. You don’t want to give it a try, you want to make a decision about what is going to happen. Slight shift in thinking, but it is powerful Start This might be the biggest thing. Even though I didn’t know what the heck to do in the beginning, I got into action and started trying a lot of different things. A lot of these things were the wrong things for me, but it allowed me to find some of the right things. Had I just stayed in one place and tried to come up with the best plan, it never would have happened. Just start. If you can nail points 1 & 2 you’ll be ahead of the game. What are your interests? Very simply, this is going to be a lot of work over a long period of time if you want to be successful with it. While you don’t necessarily need extreme passion in the thing you are working on, if you don’t enjoy at least some part of it, you are going to struggle to put in the work necessary to excel. Market demand We talked about this in episode 3, so feel free to go back. If we look at things from first principles… if we break it down to the essentials…. To have a business, you need to solve a problem for some set of customers, and in return they compensate you for it. In my app business to this day, I research the top charts and other data sources to determine what people want and how they are spending their money so I can use that data to inform my decisions. No matter what you decide to go into, it can’t JUST be about what you like. You want to be sure that whatever you decide to offer the market, there is demand for it. You can do this by looking at things that are already selling, and/or uncovering problems that you are aware of that could be addressed better, faster, more efficiently… whatever… Something I definitely could have done better earlier was zeroing in on exactly which customers I wanted to serve so I could offer them a series of complementary solutions rather than just moving from opportunity to opportunity. So that may be something you want to think about that will definitely bring value to your business. But don’t let it stop you from starting Establish a base While I know there is power in visualizing where you want to eventually be… (begin with the end in mind. I do love that) I didn’t allow it to paralyze me. What I needed was to replace my income or at least be able to cover my expenses plus some allowable margin of safety. My target became about $300 per day. If I could do that in a reliable fashion, I was in business. And that is pretty much all you need to do from the start. If you can cover your needs and then some in a recurring fashion, it’s going to allow you to go out and take bigger and bigger risks without even needing an investor, and I’ll tell you that you gain a lot of confidence by handling that for yourself, or at least I did. A lot more achievable than if I thought I needed to build Amazon or Facebook on my first try, which is what a lot of people set out to do… and that can be very daunting. Find a MentorAll of the things we talked about above can be expedited if you find someone who has already done what you want to do, already achieved the results you want, and then you walk in their path. I had several mentors for the app business, as I’ve discussed. I paid for their books and their online courses, and I’m glad I did because it saved me a ton of time and allowed me to get to the results I wanted a lot quicker than I would have otherwise. To this day I invest a lot of time and money in my skills and personal development in order to acquire the skills I need to accomplish what I want to accomplish. I also leverage free and inexpensive information… podcasts, books, audiobooks, etc. And sometimes I will be lucky enough to find myself in a position where someone has taken an interest in me and I’ve cultivated a relationship where the mentoring is free of charge. But I don’t count on that and I to this day I don’t have a problem paying to invest in my future if I know there is value there, and most of the people I know who have had some level of success will tell you the same thing. Note that It has to be in the right person for your goal, so definitely do your research before you start signing up for everything left and right and spending money foolishly, and note that it doesn’t absolve you of doing the work or running your own race. So know that as well. But mentorship can be a major shortcut when it comes to this entrepreneurship game. And like I said… I will never claim I have all the answers for you. Keep letting me know what your goals are and what you want to learn. As much as I can, I will do my best to introduce you to accomplished and credible people I know that can help you get start So that’s about all I have to say today on how to take the first step. Well actually… I would be remiss if I didn’t mention this. After all, my wife is Nicaila Matthews Okome, aka Side Hustle Pro, of the chart topping Side Hustle Pro podcast. I did not leave my job until things were up and running and making significant revenue and you don’t have to either. You can certainly get started on the side as a side hustle and still be effective, in my experience. You just need to be disciplined and take it seriously, subtract from the areas of life that you need to so that you can focus and give it your all.
The streets are quiet as I turn onto a one-way residential stretch of Washington Blvd. My destination sits at the corner, facing a mix of old and new three-story brick townhomes and greystones along Washington Boulevard and a vacant lot along Albany Avenue. I get out of my car and walk to the curb. A single, empty glass bottle lays on the grass.Cars are parked in the grass-and-rock lot next to my destination. A group of senior citizens enter the building through a side door next to the large stone stairs at the front entrance. As I stood at the base of the stairs, I glanced to my right to see a pole tied to the trunk of a tree, holding a small fiberglass basketball backboard and rim.I enter through the glass double doors into the inviting and well-appointed auditorium. Oak benches with blue padded cushions give the main floor the feel of a library. Light colored brick walls frame tall frosted windows, which filter the incoming sunlight. An eight-person, all-male band led the audience in song as the event began. I think this might be the first time I've seen an all-male band on my journey. There were only 100 or so people assembled here this morning, but they seemed comfortable being in this space, and being with each other. After the singing, a few minutes were dedicated to recognizing audience members who were celebrating birthdays. The entire audience sang Happy Birthday to the handful of people scattered throughout who stood and soaked in the love. The journey continues in the Garfield Park neighborhood on the west side, at the corner of Washington Blvd. and Albany.Intro Theme Music: Victory Lap by QSTN ft. Panda's Did not always eat it like you see in pictures. - At some point, pandas came to love the taste of bamboo and hate hunting, giving us the peaceful and herbivorous, bamboo-munching creatures we know today. Here are a few more…. I hope you enjoyed this Fun Fuel. This is Hudson Robertson. Enjoy the show! Romy: Thanks so much Hudson. I might have to go find some Bamboo to try in a salad. I hadn't thought about that before! Ha ha Okay, let's turn our attention to Amanda Lewan from Bamboo Detroit… Amanda: Yes, we just opened up at our new location, 1420 Washington Boulevard on floor three. The building is called the Julian C. Madison Building, so we're super pumped about it. It's a beautiful building right downtown. It's locally owned by a wonderful family. The building's named after our landlord, Sharon Madison's father, Julian C. Madison. He was a history-making entrepreneur himself. Romy: Oh, he was? Amanda: It's very inspiring to live that sort of similar path with our inclusive entrepreneurial hub here. Romy: Yeah, can we hear a little bit about that story? Amanda: Yeah, so Sharon's father and grandfather were trailblazers. They were the first and third African American engineers in the state of Ohio, and I think his grandfather was one of the very first engineers, African American engineers hired by the federal government. When they bought this building, they named it after her father. One of the things they always described it as he always had a spirit of ... A belief that one should take their life into their own hands, and create with it. I guess he [inaudible 00:02:33] always give back and help raise up the younger generation for their own businesses. It was a really good fit for us seeing a great shared workspace for entrepreneurs and creatives, and fostering and sharing those values of inclusion and diversity. We're super pumped. I think it's really good to partner with people who share your...
