Today we have a very special guest. From the stages of off-Broadway to the bright lights of Broadway, from his unmistakable voice to his performances in 30+ movies, Harvey Fierstein has spent a lifetime telling stories that matter. With four Tony Awards to his name—two for writing, two for acting—his work in Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, and Hairspray has redefined representation on stage. But beyond the accolades, there's the man: a Brooklyn-born artist whose journey has been shaped by family, resilience, and an unyielding belief in telling the truth. Harvey also has a deep love for sewing and costume design. Before becoming famous Fierstein studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and worked as a costume designer in the off-off-Broadway world. He has spoken about his passion for sewing in interviews, reminiscing about how he used to design and create costumes for drag performers and theater productions which helped shape his deep understanding of theatrical presentation and character development. His early work in costume design was part of his immersion in the vibrant New York theater community of the 1970s, where he collaborated with experimental and LGBTQ+ artists.Even as his career in theater took off with Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray, sewing remained a part of his life. He has mentioned that working with fabric and creating garments is a meditative and creative outlet for him. His appreciation for costume design also extends to his theatrical work, where he often acknowledges the impact of great costume designers in bringing characters to life.So today we go beyond the footlights to explore the moments that made him—his early days, the influence of his parents, why Ridgefield, Connecticut became his adopted hometown and, why sewing has been an anchoring thread in his life. (2:15) We welcome the inimitable Harvey Fierstein! He shares how he first picked up sewing—starting with an industrial machine in his father's handkerchief factory—before setting his sights on becoming a Disney animator. But, things changed for him and as Harvey puts it, “Life only changes when you're brave enough to say yes.”(5:27) A deep dive into Harvey's quilting journey, from discovering HGTV and Alex Anderson to creating story-driven quilts today. His first quilt? Alex Anderson's Strips that Sizzle!(9:25) Growing up in a conservative Jewish household, Harvey learned the power of storytelling from his family. Education, art, music, and Broadway were all part of his upbringing, shaping the creative force he became.(11:45) Family isn't just who you're born to—it's also who you find. Harvey talks about his “found family” in the theatre, the people who call him “mama” and “papa,” and what it means to always be true to yourself.(13:32) Ever wonder what a Harvey Fierstein Stitch & Bitch session looks like? He spills all about his quilting experiments and creative process.(16:03) From bold colors to playful designs, Harvey shares his favorite fabrics and how he keeps things fresh alternating between challenging and just plain silly projects.(20:15) Picking a favorite quilt is like picking a favorite child—but Harvey gives it a shot!(23:20) The costumes that left a mark: Harvey reflects on the magic of theatrical costumes, the collaborative art of design, and why theatre itself is an act of faith.(27:07) Favorite roles—on stage, in film, and yes, even Death to Smoochy!(30:30) Writing his memoir I Was Better Last Night was a journey in itself. Harvey shares what inspired him to put his life on paper.(31:20) When did he finally feel accepted? And what really led him to move Torch Song Trilogy to Broadway? It's not the story you think!(32:31) A mother always knows! The moment Harvey's mom saw her own earrings on him during Torch Song Trilogy—and her priceless reaction.(34:00) What's the secret to his success? According to Harvey, it's all about taking that unexpected fork in the road.(38:38) The quilting class that changed everything: What Harvey learned from Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably and Liza Lucy.(39:10) Quilting vs. theatre—two creative worlds, two very different communities. Harvey compares the two.(40:54) The key to keeping every performance fresh? Harvey reveals how he does it.(43:06) Why Bridgefield, CT has been home for 40 years—and how Harvey's house reflects is unique perspective on life and art.(46:00) “As much as it hurts, tell the truth.” Harvey explains how this philosophy, shaped by his father, has guided his life and career.(47:25) What's next—what's left on Harvey's bucket list?(52:18) Want to connect with Harvey? This week, we eat potato soup, rice pudding, and oranges before we discuss Torch Song Trilogy. We connect with this seminal film about a gay man's search for family on many different levels. Arnold's interesting way of looking at things makes him one of the greatest characters we have ever encountered. Per his advice, we were careful not to fall into an elevator shaft, skinny dip in a school of piranha, or accidentally douche with Drano on the way to the set. Arnold, Alan, Ed, Ma, and David draw us into their world in search of love and respect. It's rare to find a film that truthfully captures the emotions of its characters. He will be known to most for his memorable turns as Frank, the make-up artist who turns his brother into the infamous Scottish nanny in Mrs. Doubtfire (Chris Columbus, 1993) or perhaps as Marty, the frantic cable company manager in Independence Day (Roland Emmerich, 1996). HARVEY FIERSTEIN wrote the books ( or adapted the books ) for the Broadway musicals Funny Girl, Kinky Boots. Newsies as well as Torch Song Trilogy (Tony®, Drama Desk, and OBIE Awards), La Cage aux Folles (Tony® and Drama Desk Awards), The Sissy Duckling (Humanitas Award), A Catered Affair (12 Drama Desk nominations), Safe Sex (Ace Award), Legs Diamond, Spookhouse, Flatbush Tosca, Common Ground, and more. His political editorials have been published in The New York Times, TV Guide, The Huffington Post, and broadcast on PBS's “In the Life”. His children's book, The Sissy Duckling, is now in its fifth printing. As an actor, Mr. Fierstein is known worldwide for his performances in films like Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day, and on stage in Hairspray (Tony Award®), Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy (Tony Award®), and TV shows such as “Smash,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Good Wife,” “Cheers” (Emmy nomination), “The Simpsons,” and “Nurse Jackie.” Acclaimed originally for his groundbreaking writing and performance in his 1981 Torch Song Trilogy, Harvey Fierstein has refined and redefined the persona of the drag queen in the theater. Two years later, Fierstein brought that insight and humor into his book for the musical adaptation of La Cage aux Folles. As Frank Rich wrote in the New York Times, this “is the first Broadway musical ever to give center stage to a homosexual love affair – but don't go expecting an earthquake. The show at the Palace is the schmaltziest, most old-fashioned major musical Broadway has seen since ‘Annie,' and it's likely to be just as popular with children of all ages.”  Fierstein subsequently wrote the book for Legs Diamond (1988) with music and lyrics by Peter Allen, who also starred in the show. He did not return to Broadway until 2002, when he took on the role of Edna Turnblad in the musical adaptation of Hairspray (book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan; music by Marc Shaiman; lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman). According to Ben Brantley, Fierstein's performance as Edna “is not just a cross-dressing sight gag. She's every forgotten housewife, recreated in monumental proportions and waiting for something to tap her hidden magnificence.”  After playing Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof, Harvey Fierstein wrote the book and starred in the 2008 musical, A Catered Affair. As a writer and actor, Fierstein has won three Drama Desk Awards and four Tonys®, most recently for his portrayal of Edna in Hairspray. His most recent memoir is called I Was Better Last Night. STAGES spotlights such episodes, in case you missed them the first time ‘round - or so you can simply savour, a second listen. Either way, you'll accessing precious oral histories from the people who were there, on and around our stages.Born into a family dynasty of performers it would appear that Tony Sheldon's destiny was pre-ordained. Recognition as a talented youth saw him perform on In Melbourne Tonight with Graham Kennedy and join the workhouse in the Sydney season of the musical Oliver. As a young man his career as an actor in plays saw him embrace a fast-growing repertoire in roles as a sensitive young man - Equus, The Glass Menagerie and Peter Kenna's seminal Australian work, A Hard God. His break-out performance as Arnold Becker in Torch Song Trilogy quickly followed. It wasn't long before he extended his playing into the Musical Theatre; a form that has been a life-long passion. Sheldon's engaging style, colossal charm and extensive appreciation of the form have provided us with perfect portrayals in shows that include The Venetian Twins, Into The Woods, The Producers, The Witches of Eastwick, Dames At Sea, Man of La Mancha, My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly!, Victor/Victoria, and a show that has taken him around the world, given him Olivier and Tony award nominations - and a portrait in Sardi's – the role of transsexual Bernadette, the glamorous and resilient showgirl in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical. This interview was recorded during the Sydney run of anniversary production of PRISCILLA in 2018. Sheldy was negotiating a back-injury and doubted he would reach 2000 performances in the role of Bernadette. The show goes on and of course, Sheldon continued on to Adelaide and Brisbane seasons of the musical. Not deterred by a back-injury, he completed 2006 performances in a role that commenced his global journey in 2006.Tony Sheldon has retired from the stage. His legacy is a host of glorious turns on stage, as well as being a cherished mentor, accomplished teacher, director and writer, and professional colleague to a legion of performers. In this, our second Pride month offering, we bring you 1988 film version of Harvey Fierstein's tour de force Torch Song Trilogy. Fierstein plays Arnold, a young homosexual living and performing in 1970's NYC. Presented in three chapters, we see Arnold struggle and grow in his relationships and along the way learn a thing or two about when and where we find 'family'. Featuring the always-masterful Anne Bancroft as Ma, with Matthew Broderick and Brian Kerwin as Arnold's long term relationships, and the under utilized Ken Page and Charles Pierce playing fellow drag performers. This definitely deserves it's place in the queer canon. When Tony Award-winning actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein was growing up in New York City in the 60s, he was surrounded by the beginnings of the gay rights movement, and protest art and avant-garde theater was the norm. "I didn't know that being gay was sad until I got out into the world and they told me that," he said in our interview. "All the gay people I know are really kind of happy." And writing from that lens has informed his work ever since. In his new memoir, I Was Better Last Night, Harvey shares the six year journey to get his breakthrough play, Torch Song Trilogy, on Broadway, and shares other behind the scenes stories from hit Broadway plays like Hairspray, Fiddler on the Roof, and La Cage aux Folles. He also told me about his relationship with his younger brother turned business manager, why he's happily single and sober, and how he thinks he'll be remembered.

It may be hard for some of us to believe, but this past Valentine's Day – Feb 14, 2022 – marked the 50th Anniversary of the New York opening of the musical GREASE, at the Eden Theater on 2nd Avenue. And next week, June 7, will mark the 50th Anniversary of its official move to Broadway.  My guests this week are that Grease's original producer, Ken Waissman, and original director, Tom Moore, who along with Adrienne Barbeau (the original “Rizzo”) are the editors of the new book : Grease – Tell Me More, Tell Me More – Stories From The Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All. Ken Waisman is a Tony Award winning producer who made his Broadway debut with the play And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little. In addition to Grease he went on to produce Over Here! starring the Andrews Sisters, and the long running plays Agnes Of God, and Torch Song Trilogy. Tom Moore is a leading theater, film and television director whose work on Broadway includes his debut with Grease, Over Here!, Moon Over Buffalo starring Carol Burnett, and Night Mother. Their new book is made up of a the personal, behind-the-scenes memories of the show's creative and production teams, as well as scores of cast members from Grease's original cast, five national tours, and record breaking eight-year run on Broadway. In this episode you will hear about how Ken discovered the show in a ramshackle community theater production in Chicago; why Ken chose Tom to direct the show instead of Michael Bennett; how Tom almost turned the show down; and how together they discovered and cast more future stars than probably any other musical in history! Grease alumni include Adrianne Barbeau, Barry Bostwick, Jeff Conaway, Carole Demas, Greg Evigan, Peter Gallagher, Richard Gere, Marilu Henner, Judy Kaye, Rex Smith, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, Treat Williams, and Adrian Zmed. As well as the future Broadway directors Walter Bobbie, Scott Ellis, and Jerry Zaks. Has any other show produced that many stars?  Even if Grease is not your favorite show, I feel certain that you will be fascinated by their stories of how the show came together, as well as the casting stories of John Travolta, Patrick Swayze and Richard Gere. Broadway Nation is written and produced by me, David Armstrong. For the last episode of Backstage Babble's Pride Month, I welcome Broadway legend Ken Page, star of Cats, Ain't Misbehavin', Guys and Dolls, and more, as well as a regular actor at the St. Louis MUNY for over 25 years. His on-screen appearances include The Nightmare Before Christmas, Torch Song Trilogy, and Dreamgirls. On July 1 (because Pride should continue to be celebrated throughout the year), hear him share some beautiful words about his coming out journey and what the concept means to him. Plus, lots of showbiz stories: the moment in Cats that he created, what was missing in the revival of Ain't Misbehavin', the joke that Abe Burrows taught him how to land, how a cabaret medley got him a role in The Wiz, getting an early lesson on how to cry, the favorite award he's ever won, being introduced by Gillian Lynne, plus Harvey Fierstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Nell Carter, and more!

There's also lots of good history stuff about the history of drag. Up in the problem attic we're more interested what's not in the boxes: bi phobia and dead queer characters.

Star Trek fans went crazy when we found out that Captain Jean Luc Picard from Star Trek the Next Generation would be returning to screens. We even went crazier when we found out that actor and activist Jonathan Del Arco's would be returning, 27 years after his first appearance as Hugh, an iconic fan favorite from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Television audiences most recently saw him as Dr. Fernando Morales, a role that spanned ten years over the course of two series The Closer and Major Crimes on TNT. Other memorable appearances on film and television include Nip/Tuck, The Sopranos, 24, Crossing Jordan, Huff, Star Trek: Voyager, Mommies, The Wonder Years, Blossom, Boy Meets World, Miami Vice, NCIS, and The Crazy Ones with Robin Williams. Foregoing college at 18 he joined the company of the Broadway hit Torch Song Trilogy and toured the country along with Golden Girls' Estelle Getty. Many other Broadway and off Broadway plays followed before Del Arco settled in Los Angeles to pursue work on television and film. As a passionate activist on behalf of LGBT rights, immigrant's rights, anti-bullying efforts, and the environment, he served as a campaign surrogate for President Barack Obama and Sec. Hillary Clinton and is a sought after public speaker. He has shared his coming out story and childhood as an immigrant and survivor of bullying and discrimination at the first pride event at FBI Headquarters, the 2012 Democratic Convention, The Human Rights Campaign, and throughout corporate America. We chatted with Jonathan about his experience growing up in the US as an immigrant from Uruguay, his friendship with Estelle Getty, missing a stage cue, life during the AIDS epidemic, the LGBTQ community in Star Trek, his crush on Captain Kirk, and why it's imperative for the LGBTQ community to become politically involved.

It is time to grab a cup of tea (Earl Grey Hot for the Trekkies), strap in and get ready for another episode from the Nerds we all look forward to each week. Also grab a slice of birthday cake and help us wish the DJ a Happy Birthday, yep our favourite funny guy is another year older. Now on with the show; that’s right, we once again have another fun packed episode in which we entertain you with some of the latest topics in Nerd pop culture news. This week we start off with news of an animated series coming from Netflix of Magic the Gathering. While details are limited at the moment it is something to look forward to. The boys have some interesting points to consider with this one, and the chief among them is based on who determines what is canon for stories. Also what is possibly the coolest car commercial at the moment?Next up we look at why brushing your teeth is more important than just to protect your teeth and good breathe. The implications for this are actually quite important, particularly if you want to remember where you hid your favourite comics and figurines. Once again Buck has found a research article that we should take a moment to look at that highlights some very interesting and disturbing facts. So, remember to brush, rinse and floss if you want to have the best health in the nursing home.Next up Professor brings us news that Tesla is now becoming a rolling game console. That’s right, Tesla cars are gaming consoles with the release of another game to play on the in car tablet style interactive screen. Unfortunately you are not able to play them while driving, um, oops, maybe that’s a good thing. We also hear about what some people have been doing with their Teslas that has been noticed by Elon, and trust us, this is not something we recommend. The games played this week show us that Buck truly is a grumpy old man, and that DJ is a fan of Clint Eastwood. But honestly tough, who isn’t a fan of Clit? What game is this, listen in or cheat and scroll down to the link. DJ has been playing Mortal Kombat 11 and still hasn’t exhibited any signs of PTSD, lots of other funny behaviour, but hey, that is normal. Professor has set fire to a house and read a book by the light. Then we have the shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events. Speaking of Birthdays, we wish to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to DJ. He is OLD folks!!! As always, stay safe, take care of each other and stay hydrated, catch you all next time.EPISODE NOTES:Magic the Gathering the animated series - https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/magic-the-gathering-animated-series-netflix-russo-brothers-1203230595/#article-commentsThe wonders of brushing your teeth - https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/06/190603102549.htmCuphead now playable in Tesla - https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/06/02/cuphead-will-be-playable-in-tesla-model-3-model-s-and-model-x-cars?sf103564640=1Games currently playingBuck– Get of my lawn - https://store.steampowered.com/app/260410/Get_Off_My_Lawn/Professor- Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead - https://cataclysmdda.org/DJ– MK 11 - https://store.playstation.com/en-au/product/EP1018-CUSA11379_00-00MORTALKOMBAT11Other topics discussedStar Wars making the expanded universe not canon- https://www.dailydot.com/parsec/star-wars-expanded-universe-not-canon/Star Wars novels releases by date- https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_novels_by_release_dateDungeons and Dragons (live action film series)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons_(film_series)Magic the Gathering Lore Trailers- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW-PCQJfXX0Dungeons & Dragons (1983 TV series)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons_(TV_series)Renault KWID Outsider featuring Dungeons & Dragons- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC9-bfsNne8&feature=youtu.beFull report on the wonders of brushing your teeth- https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/1/eaau3333Report: People who curse have better vocabularies- https://www.sciencealert.com/people-who-swearing-cursing-rude-words-better-vocabulary-scienceA couple shot a porn film in a Tesla- https://www.businessinsider.com/couple-shot-porno-in-moving-tesla-on-autopilot-2019-5/?r=AU&IR=TElon Mush smokes weed on the Joe Rogan Podcast- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VcCzKjXs-8&feature=youtu.beVictorian Police now has Tesla X police cars- https://www.news.com.au/technology/innovation/motoring/on-the-road/victoria-police-add-shock-new-vehicle-to-its-fleet/news-story/d43c541e67e72d40f0dfb4a4579493e6Tomorrow Never Dies (1997 James Bond Film)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomorrow_Never_DiesTerminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003 movie)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminator_3:_Rise_of_the_MachinesBethesda Fallout 76 canvas bags saga 6 months later- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaPo5jgZbj0All things Apple in WWDC 19- https://www.cnet.com/news/wwdc-2019-everything-apple-announced-ios-13-dark-mode-mac-pro-macos-10-15-ipados/1989 Tiananmen Square protests- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Tiananmen_Square_protestsTrump and Macron honor D-Day veterans- https://www.cbsnews.com/live-news/d-day-anniversary-watch-live-stream-normandy-invasion-trump-macron-today-2019-06-06-live-updates/97-year-old jumps out of plane for D-Day- https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/ww2-parachute-tom-rice/index.htmlThat’s Not Canon Podcasts- General Queeries - https://thatsnotcanon.com/generalqueeriespodcast- Cosmic Moments - https://thatsnotcanon.com/cosmicmomentspodcastShoutouts3 Jun 2019 - iTunes, the jukebox software that revolutionized the music industry after its launch in 2001 is now shutting down. STAGES very first guest, launching the podcast, was the legendary Toni Lamond – a woman of abundant talent and huge heart. It is a delight that we are going to bookend this very first season with her son, Tony Sheldon; our final guest for 2018.Born into a family dynasty of performers it would appear that Tony Sheldon’s destiny was pre-ordained. Recognition as a talented youth saw him perform on IN MELBOURNE TONIGHT with Graham Kennedy and join the workhouse in the Sydney season of the musical OLIVER. As a young man his career as an actor in plays saw him embrace a fast growing repertoire in roles as a sensitive young man - EQUUS, THE GLASS MENAGERIE and Peter Kenna’s seminal Australian work, A HARD GOD. His break-out performance as Arnold Becker in TORCH SONG TRILOGY quickly followed. It wasn’t long before he extended his playing into the Musical Theatre; a form that has been a life-long passion. Sheldon’s engaging style, colossal charm and extensive appreciation of the form have provided us with perfect portrayals in shows that include THE VENETIAN TWINS, INTO THE WOODS, THE PRODUCERS, DAMES AT SEA and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. Most significantly, one role has taken him around the world, rewarding him with 'Olivier' and 'Tony' award nominations – that of transsexual Bernadette, the glamorous and resilient survivor, in PRISCILLA – QUEEN OF THE DESERT – The Musical. But not “everything has come up roses” for Sheldon … long bouts of depression and personal upsets along the way have provided their challenges. He is frank, warm and always inspiring in detailing these. He is a true gentleman of the theatre; a captivating raconteur and a thoroughly nice man – it was an absolute delight to spend some time with Tony Sheldon.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 463  This week we welcome Dr. Ann Hall, Chair Comparative Humanities at University of Louisville, who not only teaches about film, but has also been a movie fan pretty much her whole life. So together we embark on our usual conversational trajectory as we bounce around from topics like… the old Hollywood publicity machine to favorite holiday movies. We also address the role of women in film in general to more specifically - the role of women in horror films. Plus a lot of other random discussions along the way. And before we’re done, someone in the cast tells us how - this one time... they met Bill Murray. And as we all leisurely lounge in a bathtub full of milk, we also mention… the Hays code, Tex Avery cartoons, Cecil B. DeMille, Turn of the Screw, Florence Lawrence, Rosemary's Baby, associated with the lowbrow medium… like film, Sigourney Weaver, celebrity magazines, she began as a flapper, It's a Wonderful Life, clean up her act, Miracle at St. Anna, babysitters, spectacle vs. story, Joan Crawford, The Others, Die Hard, visual literacy, Babette's Feast, we were hiding from the trick-or-treaters, old soda ads, The Conjuring, CG creating new celebrity performances, idealizing children, Nosferatu, Avalon, Carrie Underwood is Julie Andrews, a teaching conundrum, North by Northwest, manager their image, Claudette Colbert, was called box office poison, Mildred Pierce, In Cold Blood, Laura Mulvey essay, Ira Levin, he looked a little like John Hurt’s Elephant Man, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Shadow of the Vampire, Torch Song Trilogy, attuned to beauty, Chris Evans, Bad Santa, always looking for patterns, what have you done to it’s eyes, right of refusal with scripts, Katharine Hepburn, soda ads, Get Out, people that live in it… don’t seem to live, an American success story, brows, cheekbones, lips and hair, The Innocents, the way that women are treated in different types of media, The Sign of the Cross, soap ads, the biograph girl and clerics on consultancy. “...it wasn’t meant to be... provocative… and I think they got a little carried away!”

Michael Urie currently stars on Broadway in Torch Song Trilogy. He previously starred in Buyer & Cellar playing multiple characters – including Barbra Streisand – in this one-man tour de force. For that role Urie won the Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, LA Theatre Critics and the Clarence Derwent Awards for Most Promising Male Performer. Before Torch Song Trilogy he was probably best known as the delicious Marc St. James on the award-winning Ugly Betty, the series that introduced him to and made him a favorite of TV audiences everywhere. Following that series, he spent most of his time in critically acclaimed stage productions. He played iconic fashion designer Rudi Gernreich in The Temperamentals, a role he originated in New York where he received the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor. He followed that run with appearances off-Broadway in the Classic Stage Company’s production of The Cherry Orchard, the revival of Angels in America, and opposite Patti LuPone in Lincoln Center Theater’s world premiere of Shows For Days. But his lifelong dream of Broadway came when he took on the role of Bud Frump in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, opposite Nick Jonas and Beau Bridges. Critics raved that not since Charles Nelson Reilly originated the role had Bud Frump delighted audiences as Urie did. The run ended in time for him to star in the short-lived but much-loved CBS series Partners. SincePartners, he’s appeared on the small screen in Modern Family, The Good Wife, Hot in Cleveland,Younger and Workaholics. He can currently be seen curating and hosting movies on Logo’s Cocktails & Classics.

Jann Cather Weaver is an associate professor emerita of worship and theology and the arts at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. She's an ordained minister, and has served parishes in Wisconsin and Missouri. A published author, and a former Yale Divinity School professor, Jann and I met at Yale, where she taught one of the most memorable courses I took in my master's program, "The Theology of Art and Film." This interview was a true delight, for so many reasons. Jann's ministry has been a beautiful dance of art, of exploring the human condition, and of looking for divine communication through many lenses, and many art forms, including photography, music, and film. She is a welcoming presence, and at the same time, a powerful force, truly comfortable in her own person, and yet pushing out toward the radical edge of theological education. It's a joy to witness how she's followed her own heart in pursuing theology and the arts, "not because Ithought there was a career there, but because it was (for lack of a better word) my passion. I could do no other than that." I hope that you will take a listen, and soak up her words; her journey is one of an artist honing her craft, and I very much resonated with her words about finding a vocation, about pursuing dreams, and about extending radical love, acceptance, and hospitality to all of the creation. In this episode we talk about: - Jann's journey to earning her MDiv (Master's of Divinity) at Eden Seminary - how a T5 tornado that struck Barneveld Wisconsin in 1984 changed her life, and the trajectory of her ministry - about her time at Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California - how careers change over time, and how the question of "good enough" may crop up more than once in the course of one's life - Boy George, Torch Song Trilogy, and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - and a paper I wrote at grad school - Lars and the Real Girl, and the theology of this 2007 film starring Ryan Gosling - Jann's most recent courses, and future plans - Jann's answer to how to jump start your own joy And here are the links to download the show or subscribe via iTunes and Stitcher: Links: Eden Theological Seminary Acts 2: the Story of Pentecost Isaiah 43: Jann preached on this after the events of Barneveld News footage of the destruction at Barneveld in 1984 War of Art by Stephen Pressfield Graduate Theological Union Yale Divinity School Boy George: Cheapness and Beauty (the album) on Amazon Boy George's song Il Adore on Amazon (video is also below from YouTube) Torch Song Trilogy on Amazon Priscilla, Queen of the Desert on Amazon Lars and the Real Girl on Amazon Jann Cather Weaver's page on United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities   I am an Amazon affiliate. "Priscilla Queen of the Desert"'s Tony Sheldon talks about his six year journey with the show, from his dislike of the original film on which it's based to his transcontinental success as Bernadette in Australia, New Zealand, England, Canada and now the United States. He also talks about growing up in a multi-generational show business family in Australia (including his mother Toni Lamond, who's still performing at age 79, and his aunt Helen Reddy) which saw him working professionally at age 7; his performing hiatus from age 12 to 17, after which he rebelled against his family's singing and dancing tradition by embarking on work in plays; his youthful roles as Alan Strang in "Equus" and Tom in "The Glass Menagerie" (as well as the hit show "Hamlet on Ice"); his first exposure to Shakespeare; his success -- after a shaky start -- as Arnold in the Australian debut of "Torch Song Trilogy"; how the burgeoning Australian film industry and resident theatre movements ran in parallel, rather than intertwined, paths; his dual career as writer and director of cabaret vehicles for many of Australia's best known performers, including his mom; his profound unhappiness at being cast as Roger De Bris in "The Producers"; and whether -- after working outside of Australia for the first time in Priscilla -- he'd like to work again in London or New York. Original air date - June 8, 2011.
