In this episode of The Edge of Risk podcast, host Joel Appelbaum welcomes Andy Stoelting, senior director of insurance and risk management at Webcor, to discuss the evolution of Webcor's Hawaii-domiciled captive insurance company, Paramount Insurance, Inc. Andy shares his journey from insurance defense attorney to risk management leader and provides an inside look at how Paramount transitioned from a pure captive to a sponsored captive with protected cells. The discussion explores how Paramount supports Webcor and its affiliates in managing construction risks, including innovative uses of the captive to address unique challenges, such as a 10-year performance obligation for the University of California, Merced project. Andy also highlights the benefits of domiciling in Hawaii, the influence of Japanese governance from Webcor's parent company, Obayashi Corporation, and the strategic considerations for balancing captive utilization with opportunities in the commercial market. Whether you're in the construction industry or exploring captives as a risk management tool, this episode offers valuable insights into the power of captive insurance in a complex and evolving landscape.

AL KOOPER 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' EPISODE 6   Singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist AL KOOPER continues to relish an incredible life of music. Although these days it's mostly through his weekly online column for The Morton Report entitled ‘New Music for Old People' Kooper reveals… “This column is like the title says - its intention is to fill the gap for those of us who were satiated musically in the '60s and then searched desperately as we aged for music we could relate to and get the same buzz from nowadays. iTunes was the answer for me in 2003 and I have been following the new releases every Tuesday ever since I realized there was an endless stream of music I could enjoy there. The reason I am writing this column is to make sure others don't miss this. These are not top ten items; but they SHOULD be!” Kooper is also excited about the re-release of the classic ‘Super Session' album featuring Al Kooper-Mike Bloomfield-Stephen Stills. The album is re-mastered with the latest (Hybrid Multichannel SACD) technology. The package includes new liner notes written by Al Kooper that tell the story of the Super Session album and the new 5.1 Multichannel mix. The 5.1 mix by Al Kooper with mastering by Bob Ludwig was never released and yet it has acquired some fame from industry insiders familiar with the Multichannel mix with comments like "excellent" and "it deserves to be heard. “The new mastering of the Stereo tracks for new SACD Stereo and CD Stereo audio are by mastering engineer Steve Hoffman. -The official release of ‘Super Session' on amazon.com is -September 9th. AL KOOPER: had a life changing undertaking technologically and musically after receiving a Webcor reel to reel tape recorder as a Bat Mitzvah gift in 1957.Born in Brooklyn and growing up in Queens, New York … Kooper began his incredible music career as a fourteen-year-old guitarist with The Royal Teens (“Short Shorts” #3 U.S. Hit in 1958). In 1960, Kooper joined the songwriting team of Bob Brass and Irwin Levine and wrote “This Diamond Ring” (#1 U.S. Hit in 1965) for Gary Lewis & the Playboys. At 21, Kooper moved to Greenwich Village and began a momentous relationship with Bob Dylan. He performed and recorded with Dylan including adding his classic Hammond organ riffs on “Like a Rolling Stone”(#2 U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Hit in 1965). During those recording sessions, Kooper met Michael Bloomfield. In 1967, Al Kooper joined The Blues Project as their keyboardist. He left the band before the group was to appear at the infamous Monterey Pop Festival, and instead, along with bandmate Steve Katz, formed the jazz/rock/psychedelic/ R&B/ group …Blood, Sweat & Tears. Kooper left Blood, Sweat & Tears after their critically acclaimed debut release … ‘Child Is Father to the Man' (1968). The album spawned the classic rock mainstays … “I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know” (Penned by Kooper) and “I Can't Quit Her” (Written by Kooper/Levine). Al Kooper recorded a jazz inspired jam entitled ‘Super Session' in 1968 with Michael Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. The album spawned an incredible cover of Donovan's “Season of the Witch” and my favorite track “His Holy Modal Majesty” (Written by Kooper and Bloomfield). The album peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold. It was Al Kooper who called Judy Collins in the middle of the night and put Joni Mitchell on the phone to sing “Both Sides Now” which eventually became a huge hit for Collins in 1968. Throughout the years …Kooper became a mainstay in the recording studio performing with The Rolling Stones, The Who, B.B. King, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Alice Cooper, Peter, Paul & Mary, Joe Cocker, Tom Petty, and Roger McGuinn to name just a few. Kooper discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1972 after watching several of their appearances at a frequented club in Atlanta. Al moved to Atlanta and signed the band to his new record label ‘Sounds of the South.' (He would eventually sell the label to MCA Records). Al Kooper produced and performed on Lynyrd Skynyrd's first (3) albums…  (‘Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd, Second Helping, and Nuthin'Fancy). Also, on the singles “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Free Bird,” and “Saturday Night Special.” Al Kooper produced The Tubes, David Essex, Nils Lofgren, Rick Nelson, Ray Charles, The Staple Singers, Bob Dylan, and Lynyrd Skynyrd … to name just a few. He also played and arranged three tracks on George Harrison's ‘Somewhere in England' album and performed with the remaining Beatles … George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr, on Harrison's Hit single “All Those Years Ago” (U.S. #2 Billboard Hot 100 Hit in 1981). Kooper has also written and composed on countless albums and scores for television and motion pictures. And let's not forget an incredible SOLO CAREER … I Stand Alone (1969), You Never Know Who Your Friends Are (1969), Easy Does It (1970), New York City (You're A Women)(1971), Possible Projection of the Future/ Childhood's End (1972), Naked Songs (1973), Act Like Nothing's Wrong (1977), Championship Wrestling (1982), Rekooperation (1994), Soul of a Man (Live album 1995), Black Coffee (2005), and White Chocolate (2008). Al Kooper published his well- received memoir entitled … Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards: Memoirs of a Rock ‘N' Roll Survivor. The first edition was released in 1977 with subsequent editions released in 1998 and 2008. (The 2008 edition being the best of the three). I had the rare opportunity of chatting with Al Kooper about the remastered classic ‘Super Session' album on 5.1 Multichannel mix … Al's column ‘New Music for Old People' … The Music industry today … Discovering Lynyrd Skynyrd … My infamous ‘Field of Dreams' question… And much-much more!   Support us on PayPal!

this is the very first time the Chicago CWRT meeting had ever been recorded. E. B. Long (Bruce Catton's fact-man) brought a reel-to-reel tape recorder to this meeting, turned it on and various members have been recording ever since. The quality of this recording suffers, due in part to the manner in which it was stored over the years and the quality of magnetic tape available to consumers in 1951. After E. B. Long passed away, his wife Barbara turned over all the reel-to-reel tapes of the CWRT meetings to the Chicago Public Library's Special Collection Division. There they sat for many years in an archival box undisturbed. In 1986, I visited the Special Collections and asked if I could listen to some of these tapes. The curator gave me a strange look, she said, we don't have a tape player. I went to Ralph Newman and asked if I could sign the tapes out and transfer them to audio cassette. After signing my life away, they released the tapes with a solemn promise that they would be replaced by audio cassettes. Dick McAdoo had an old reel-to-reel recorder from his days in Korea. Using his Webcor along with patch plugs to a cassette recorder, the slow process of audio transfer began in real-time. The emulsion on the aging tape was so dried out, it literally flaked off the acetate base onto the table. It got so bad, I placed a newspaper on the table to keep the mess contained. When you listen to some of these early talks, it sounds choppy in spots - that's the original tape flaking away from its base. Also, I doubt any of the members had any expertise in proper recording, mic placement, etc. I surmise they set the mic down, turned on the recorder, and called anyone and everyone who had something to say up to the mic. A portion of this recording has an echo sound - perhaps someone flipped a setting on the recorder - it does come back, however. Knowing all this, this is still a gem of a recording since it is the first of many recordings.

Number 4 in our Best of 2019 Countdown is Episode #6: Tom Taylor. In this episode, Tom shares about how he didn’t believe in using a monthly Scorecard for projects but he was forced to do it on the projects he was working on.  Then, after a few projects he saw that it was totally accurate and gave him a tool to steer his projects.  Tom also shares how important measuring is to the success of any project Tom Taylor’s Career Journey Tom didn’t initially expect to end up in the construction industry. While pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree at Michigan State, he worked an internship at a large general contractor. At the end of the 10 weeks, he fell in love with the teamwork, sense of accomplishment, the variety of people, and has been hooked ever since. Tom started early as a superintendent and moved into project management in the Detroit area. The work he and his team did at that time focused on building schools; a rewarding experience that gave a sense of community contribution. Tom moved to California in 2005 and took a step backward from his Director/PM role in Michigan to learn what it means to build in California including seismic bracing, digging 70-foot holes, and more. Tom spent 6 years on the San Francisco General Hospital project and from there moved into overseeing the northern California operations at Webcor the last 2 years. About Webcor Builders Webcor Builders has been around over 50 years, founded in the San Francisco Bay Area. They are a self-performing GC with 750 salaried employees and over 1,000 tradespeople. Webcor employs the largest group of carpenters in California. Webcor is a superregional company able to build most things. They are part of Obayashi Corporation, a large international firm stationed in Japan that provides financial backing among other things. Webcor’s biggest competitive advantage according to Tom is their extraordinary people! They are proud of who they are, what they do, and focus on being a positive force in the community. Tom’s Favorite Part of the Job Collaborating with people on challenges and opportunities to produce exceptional outcomes is Tom’s favorite part of his job. He loves the process of brainstorming, asking questions, and getting different perspectives in order to form solutions that no one individual would have come up with on their own. Tom’s Leadership Strengths Tom says his biggest strength as a leader is his ability to support people to draw out the best in them. Asking tough questions, encouraging and challenging people in a way they feel supported and comfortable so that trust can be established. The acronym S.A.M. stands for setting direction, aligning resources, and motivating/inspiring. Motivation is important along with feedback; showing the person they are appreciated and that they add value. Monthly Construction Scorecard Five projects Tom has worked with at SFO have used the Construction Scorecard aligned with the process of Structured Collaborative Partnering. The correlation between the scorecard’s ability to predict how a project is going to perform has been astonishing. The Construction Scorecard has worked effectively with 5 completely different projects with different stakeholders, variables, and teams. Download the Sample Construction Scorecard   How does the Construction Scorecard work? It provides the opportunity on a monthly basis for a large portion of the team and stakeholders to score how the project is going and provide feedback on critical issues. It identifies key challenges and opportunities on a regular basis and is transparent. It holds people accountable and offers the space for safe and honest input. It is meritocratic and values the best ideas across the team and stakeholders. Lessons Learned Using the Scorecard One project at SFO was not doing well in terms of the budget and schedule which was reflected on the scorecard. When Tom and his team embraced the feedback from the scorecard, they were able to collectively make changes that have up to this point produced positive results and gotten the project back on track. How Accountability Positively Affects a Team Accountability empowers employees. It emboldens them and gives them a sense that their voice is heard. Accountability embraces the key components of building trust such as talking directly, transparency, delivering on results, and keeping commitments. People’s energy shifts from challenging, questioning, and doubting others to support: how they can help the other person be successful. It has resulted in a profound shift where people place their time and effort. What kind of Projects can Benefit from the Construction Scorecard? Any project can benefit! Some less complex projects may require less executive engagement, timing, and depth, but it is always helpful to start off with a rigorous and detailed process to make sure you’re assessing how the team is performing early-on. If a project starts off well with a plan and trust, it generally will go well throughout. You can scale back the Scorecard as the project proceeds, but it is a good investment of time throughout! The worst challenge Tom has faced in his career. Tom’s worst challenge occurred more than 20 years ago. They were building a new high school at an incredibly fast pace in Michigan with a 16-month timeframe for a 400,000 sq ft. school. Three weeks before the school was opened (the schedule could not be shifted), an elevator tech fell two stories from a ladder and was permanently disabled. Tom remembers being in the elevator with the EMT helping this gentleman out. It was a dark moment in Tom’s career that he has not forgotten. Tom relates this experience back to the usefulness of a Scorecard and how had the team dynamics been a bit different, perhaps this event could have turned out more fortunately. Best advice ever received Tom’s best advice ever received comes from his dad which is that you must ALWAYS have a positive attitude. As a leader, you must be able to walk into every day no matter how bleak things are and see a positive path forward. You must set the vision, explain to people where you’re going, and create enthusiasm as to how you’re going to get there — all of which requires a positive attitude. Before pedaling her way into the world of cycling camps and coaching, Janel was a competitive runner, studious kid turned enginerd, singer, and happy when spending time with family, friends or playing outdoors. While finishing up grad school and teaching high school full-time, Janel bought her first road bike in 2006. At first, she participated in Team In Training, but soon Janel’s competitive side surfaced, and she turned her ambitions to road racing. She began working with coach Arnie Baker and entered her first race in January of 2007. Janel, Arnie & road racing proved to be the perfect fit.By the end of her first season on the road, Janel was invited to guest ride at a stage race for the California-based professional team Webcor Builders. An entry-level bike didn’t slow her down too much as she was able to help secure the overall win for her teammate and find her way to the podium in the time trial. Janel signed to race full-time with Webcor and her career as a pro bike racer began. In 2008, she began racing in Europe with Webcor and she continued to head to Europe each year with either her trade team or the U.S. national team. Janel is at her best when the road turns up, but she is certainly no slouch in the time trials. That combination made her one of the favorites in difficult U.S. stage races such as the Tour of the Gila and the Cascade Cycling Classic.Janel rode a breakout season in 2011 racing for Colavita – Forno d’Asolo. She won the Joe Martin Stage Race, her first National Racing Calendar (NRC) stage race victory. Janel also won the overall at the Tour de Toona and Oregon’s challenging Cascade Cycling Classic. Thanks to her consistency, Janel finished the season by winning the NRC individual title.Janel’s 2013 season was highlighted by a solo stage win at the Tour of Gila, finishing 2nd the following day in the time trial, and third overall. She was also a key member of the US team that brought home overall victory from the Giro Donne in Italy. For Janel, though, all the podium results were overshadowed by participating in the Team Time Trial at the World Championships in Florence 2013 and Ponferrada 2014 with her Optum teammates. Other career highlights include being named to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Long Team.Since retiring from pro road racing in 2015, Janel has directed her efforts toward individual coaching, running cycling camps and clinics, and staying active in the cycling community as a brand ambassador. In 2017 as a retiree, Janel focused on gravel events and won Crusher in the Tushar and placed 3rd at Dirty Kanza 200. She continues to ride her road, gravel or mountain bike almost daily in and around the Santa Monica Mountains from her home in Newbury Park, CA.In addition to her cycling successes, Janel has a degree in chemical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a master’s degree in education from the University of San Diego. Before turning bike racer, she taught high school math, physics and chemistry in San Diego.CampDave SwansonWebsiteBook Goat Wrestling Perseverance Clothes Free Chapter of my Bestselling Book? This helps the podcast reach even more awesome listeners and we appreciate your support :D. The following show notes are a transcription from the audio conversation between Sue Dyer and Tom Taylor. Enjoy! Tom Taylor's career journey Tom didn't initially expect to end up in the construction industry. Tom moved to California in 2005 and took a step backward from his director/PM role in Michigan to learn what it means to build in California including seismic bracing, digging 70-foot holes, and more! Tom spent 6 years on the San Fransisco general hospital project and from there moved into overseeing the northern California operations at Webcor the last 2 years. About Webcor Builders Webcor Builders has been around over 50 years, founded in the San Fransisco Bay Area. Webcor's biggest competitive advantage according to tom is their extraordinary people! They are proud of who they are, what they do, and focus on being a positive force in the community. Community Involvement Webcor has been involved in community rebuilding for over 35 years. A few examples of job-site level projects that gave back to the community were serving at a local soup kitchen, sponsoring students, and providing employment opportunities to veterans. Tom's Favorite Part of the Job Collaborating with people on challenges and opportunities to produce exceptional outcomes is Tom's favorite part of his job. He loves the process of brainstorming, asking questions, and getting different perspectives in order to form solutions that no one individual would have come up with on their own. Tom's Leadership Strengths Tom says his biggest strength as a leader is his ability to support people to draw out the best in them. Monthly Construction Scorecard 5 projects Tom has worked with at SFO have used the Construction Scorecard aligned with the process of Structured Collaborative Partnering. The correlation between the scorecard's ability to predict how a project is going to perform has been astonishing. The Construction Scorecard has worked effectively with 5 completely different projects with different stakeholders, variables, and teams. How does the Construction Scorecard work? People's energy shifts from challenging, questioning, and doubting others to support: how they can help the other person be successful. It has resulted in a profound shift where people place their time and effort. What kind of Projects can benefit from the Construction Scorecard? Any project can benefit! Some less complex projects may require less executive engagement, timing, and depth, but it is always helpful to start off with a rigorous and detailed process to make sure you're assessing how the team is performing early-on. If a project starts off well with a plan and trust, it generally will go well throughout. You can scale back the Scorecard as the project proceeds, but it is a good investment of time throughout! The worst challenge Tom has faced in his career. Tom's worst challenge occurred more than 20 years ago. It was a dark moment in Tom's career that he has not forgotten. Tom relates this experience back to the usefulness of a scorecard and how had the team dynamics been a bit different, perhaps this event could have turned out more fortunately. Best advice ever received Tom's best advice ever received comes from his dad which is that you must ALWAYS have a positive attitude. As a leader, you must be able to walk into every day no matter how bleak things are and see a positive path forward. You must set the vision, explain to people where you're going, and create enthusiasm as to how you're going to get there -- all of which requires a positive attitude.
