Welcome to a journey of self-discovery. In the last episode, we looked at the number one killer of happiness: unnecessary long-term suffering. This “happiness killer” completely shuts down our happiness. In this episode, we'll discuss the emotional dragons that feed and cause the Happiness Killer. The number one dragon is Fear. Like the dragon, fear is more powerful than happiness or any other positive emotion. It's in our DNA. We are born with fear of falling and fight/flight, a survival mechanism. Fear was vital for our survival. When Fear is beyond control, it causes other dragons:·         Anger: when out of control, creates rage, which can lead to violence.·         Hate: can lead to revenge. ·         Worry can become chronic, which causes anxiety, which can cause panic attacks·         Aggressiveness ·         Blame, shame, guilt ·         Doubt ·         Depression: if left unchecked, it can lead to suicide  Anger is a common fear. Here's a question: Do you feel angry most of the time, sometimes, or not at all? Tell the truth. I can't hear you. And no one else will hear you if you don't say it aloud. Anger is worse at controlling because it sometimes feels energizing and even exhilarating. Benjamin Franklin said, “Anger is never without a reason, but seldom a good one.”  Support the show

Proverbs 16:25 says, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” The entire account of Lot's life is that “way that seemeth right” but ending in death played out. The end of the story, the end of Genesis 19, as awful as it is to read and take in, demonstrates this truth, that fear was driving this whole ugly mess. The Seed of Sin and the Fruit of Fear. Destroyed lives, ugliness in the heart and home, a man's life fading into the background of defeat and sadness, this became the legacy of Lot. When Fear drives the train, it will drive it off the rails and into the ground hard! Paul reminds Timothy that God has not given us “the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). So, we begin there. We recognize that there is a “spirit of fear” and so we must deal with that; but we also recognize that we have been given spiritual power, agape love, and the capability of a disciplined mind, or self-control.

When you make DECISIONS based on doubt and UNBELIEF , they never turn out right. After HEARING Jesus PROMISE to RISE from the DEAD , and actually SEEING Him ALIVE, the disciples went back to WHAT they were doing BEFORE they met Him: FISHING . NOW God will use our past EXPERIENCES to TEACH HIM us, but He ALWAYS LEADS us FORWARD; never back. When FEAR and UNCERTAINTY make us want to go back to the SECURITY of what we KNOW, we END UP WITH like the DISCIPLES: ' They went out and......GOT into THE boat, and that night they caught nothing' (John 21:3 NKJV). But there's good news: lf God called you, you are still called. Notice how Jesus addresses them: '"Children, have you any food?"' (John 21:5 NKJV). In spite of your lacklustre performance, you are still His child! Next, He tells them: '"Throw your net on the right side of the boat...". When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "lt is the Lord!" (John 21:7 NIV). That morning Jesus ate breakfast with them, renewed fellowship, removed their doubts and sent them out to change the world. What's the lesson here? When we work out side God's will it is like fishing on the wrong side of the boat; we wear ourselves out and in the end have nothing to show for our efforts. Are you succeeding in life? No? Maybe you are fishing on the wrong side of the boat! Things aren't going to work out right until you submit to Christ, renew your fellowship with Him and allow Him to direct your steps. God's Servant. Rev Alfred Acheampong. Prayer Point: Heavenly Father, help me to continue to win souls for your kingdom in Jesus name. Anchor Scripture: 'THROW YOUR NET ON THE RIGHT SIDE.' (John 21:6 NIV) Stay Blessed! YearOfSupernaturalProvision

Happy Easter! This episode looks at Matthew 28:1-9. In this passage, we find Mary Magdalene and "the other" Mary (Matt 28:1) on their way to the tomb where Jesus had been placed. But while they were coming, a great earthquake shook the ground. An angel descended and rolled the stone away, and the soldiers guarding the tomb fainted, or as the Bible says, they "did shake, and became as dead men." Upon hearing the news of Jesus' resurrection, the women left to tell the disciples what had happened. And when they left, we are told they departed "with fear and great joy." How can these two things co-exist? We talk about that on this episode. We learn from this lesson that if we will press on through fear, joy will win in the end.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 5 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "When Fear and Joy Collide" (April 4, 2021). The fear of missing out is absolutely dreadful. Feeling like you’re missing out on what other people are up to is frustrating and distracting. Let’s talk about turning that fear into fun and showing up for yourself.   When Fear of Missing Out Comes: Recognize It Decide if you want to stay there or move to self-compassion Doing thought work strategies Find joy, fun, and belief in what you’re doing   The Chief Complaint: “I’m Afraid of Missing Out” The fear of missing out (affectionately also known as FOMO) is such a real feeling. It’s, of course, related to all-or-none thinking and definitely comes with a hefty dose of thought distortion. I want you to know these feelings are normal and that almost everyone has them, but you can also train yourself not to feel them quite as often.   What Even IS FOMO? Did you know that having those fear of missing out feelings actually means you’re in the mood to see people? When you understand the root of that severe FOMO, it’s easier to figure out how to help yourself. You can experience FOMO in so many situations: social events, the latest TV show, and even when it comes to setting goals. It’s so easy to think you know what you want to do, then see someone else’s goal and think that, actually, that’s what you want to do. My first piece of advice for this is to figure out what it is you actually want to do. When you get to the heart of your goals, desires, and ultimate reason for missing whatever it is you’re missing, it’s so much easier to let yourself be happy with your situation.   Turning Fear to Fun It’s natural to be curious, especially when you see someone else doing something you might want to do. There’s definitely a balance here of how much curiosity you should explore. I talk about my preferred route to curiosity and why it’s the one I’d recommend you adopt, too. When you take the time to sit with yourself, your ideals, and actually plot out what YOU want out of life, you’ll realize that many of these fears of missing out on what other people do are baseless. That’s not to say that you don’t acutely feel the loss, but you start to see what really matters in your life. The best method I’ve found to truly get over missing out is to create fun out of your situation instead of fear. Recognize that yes, you have these feelings, but you’re doing something that’s more aligned with what you truly want. That you’re doing something that matters to you and that you have fun and belief in!   Homework for Women Physicians Where do you have the biggest feelings of FOMO? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!   In This Episode  What the fear of missing out actually indicates [2:30] Why you need to figure out what you want and how to make it happen [10:00] What the right approach to curiosity is [11:30] Why you should do life the exact way YOU want to do life [15:30] How you can have fun while missing out [19:00]   Quotes “The idea is that trusting yourself and finding content within yourself, so being happy with yourself, and knowing that it doesn’t take a circumstance to make you okay with yourself. We crave social connection and it’s a beautiful thing. But at the end of the day, if you are happy with yourself, the fear of missing out is not going to be as powerful.” [6:24] “We have to start having thoughts that there are many different ways to do the same thing. Other goals are allowed.” [10:27] “When we can explore different things and ultimately come to the conclusion on our own, ultimately decide is this going to work me? That’s when we are no longer going to have the fear of missing out.” [12:42]   Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Join the Waitlist for G.O.A.L.S Society Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram  Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes Episode 10: "I Suffer From Constant All-Or-None Thinking..." Over the past week I followed several women on Instagram as they traveled to London for a literary-themed trip. One woman on the trip, Bri McKoy, posted a photo of a letter preserved under glass at St John's College Library. The letter, written by Jane Austen's father, was sent to a publisher, describing a book about the same length as a popular novel of the time. He wondered if they might be interested in taking a look at it. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bl_dpmkAeXt/ The publisher rejected the book, sight unseen, with the short reply "declined by Return of Post.” Famous Books Initially Rejected Here's part of Bri's Instagram caption: Everybody, listen up! What you are looking at is a REJECTION for Jane Austen's book PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Her dad sent a letter to a publishing house not only asking them to publish her manuscript but also telling them he would pay for everything. Still, they rejected it. They rejected it by sending his letter back to him. Can we sit with this for a moment? Someone. Rejected. P & P. We know of many stories like this. Lithub pulled together a list of books initially rejected by publishers. The list included Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, with 26 rejections from publishers, and Kathryn Stockett's The Help which endured 60 rejections from agents. The website Bookstr pulled together a list of 10 books rejected multiple times, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which was rejected 12 times; William Golding's Lord of the Flies, rejected 20 times; and Carrie by Stephen King, rejected 28 times. In her Instagram update, Bri pointed out how easy it is for us to have the luxury of knowing the whole story. “Listen,” she writes, “we know how that story ends….But what if we don't know how the refusals handed to us end? What if we are sitting in our own unknown.” Writers in Their Own Unknown Websites like Bookstr don't pull together a top ten list of writers who got rejection letters who still are unpublished. There's no triumph there. There's just the rejection. They're sitting in their own unknown, so we don't find inspiration in them. St. John's College Library doesn't preserve under glass a rejection letter for a book that's still sitting on someone's hard drive, only read by a few beta readers and the writer's mom. The rejection letter is under glass because the book was rejected AND THEN was published and became the much-loved novel Pride and Prejudice. Stephen King's book Carrie made the list because it was rejected 28 times AND THEN it was picked up by a publisher and became a blockbuster commercial success and was made into a movie. Same with The Help. It was rejected, AND THEN. Many of us haven't reached the AND THEN. We know the end of those other stories, but we don't know the end of ours. Worse, if we get the rejection, it feels like END OF STORY. That's why we're afraid. Take Heart: This Is Not The End I'm here to say it is not the end. Bri encourages her readers to take heart. “Rejection is not an executioner. Rejection is a guide.” Then she goes through several possibilities. This rejection could guide us to keep going or to pause. To take a slight left turn even though we were certain we were to go right. The idea could be too big or too small. Then she says, “Remember you are living out a full story, not a highlight reel. Let rejection inform you, not destroy you.” I join Bri in saying “take heart.” Take heart, because a rejection is not THE END. It's not. So don't let the fear of rejection keep you from doing the work. When Fear of Rejection Stops Us Before We Even Begin You may be afraid of a formal rejection by a magazine, an agent, or a book publisher where you submit your project. That fear may be holding you back from even sending it. Don't let it. Don't be afraid to try. Query the agent. If they ask to see the manuscript, submit your work. Worse, if we get the rejection, it feels like END OF STORY. That’s why we’re afraid. Take Heart: This Is Not The End I’m here to say it is not the end. It’s not. So don’t let the fear of rejection keep you from doing the work. When Fear of Rejection Stops Us Before We Even Begin You may be afraid of a formal rejection by a magazine, an agent, or a book publisher where you submit your project. That fear may be holding you back from even sending it. Don’t let it. Don’t be afraid to try. Query the agent. If they ask to see the manuscript, submit your work. When Fear entered his life, Paul turned to Someone greater than Fear. This is why he wrote with such resolve; why he lived with such abandon; why he lived so fearlessly. You cannot prevent fear from entering your life, but you can prevent it keeping you from trusting in Someone greater than Fear. When Fear intrudes into our lives, we can trust God to give us grace greater than our fears. Thus we come to the fifth of my six resolutions: I resolve to live fearlessly by trusting God to give me grace greater than my fears.
