With Walt Disney World's version of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad going down for a refurbishment for over a year, Rick thought it was a good time to take a look at what makes the ride such an iconic part of any Disney vacation. We will discuss the theming, fictional backstory, and the real backstory behind the attraction.

Welcome to the Wildest Ride, a three-part podcast on Sheffield United from 2016-2021: a magical time that saw the Blades drag themselves from the middle of League One to the top half of the Premier League. Part one focuses on that first season, when Chris Wilder and Alan Knill arrived at a club on its knees, ripped up the rulebook and concocted a team of centurions. Join us to chart a course from the lap of dishonour to Billy Sharp atop the shoulders of fans on a sunny day in Northampton. Get full access to The Pinch at www.thepinch.uk/subscribe
The Class of 18/19If you go to a pub in Ireland, you have to have a song. And if you don't have a song, you might as well not go to the pub at all. Wise words of warning from John Egan: but at the time he said this, there was no risk of silence in S2. Sheffield United's 2018/19 season was music to our ears. Part two of our trilogy of podcasts on the Chris Wilder 1.0 era sees the club established back in the Championship with a strong previous season. A wobble at the start (the usual) was rectified pretty quickly. Results went our way. Then a few more. And a few more. The odd loss here and there meant it was a race for second and a barely believable return to the top flight with our bunch of frees, outcasts and misfits. We were introduced to Zinedave Zigoldrick. We got Stearmaned. Billy Sharp scored goals. Basham arrived. We forgot the maths: the Premier League beckoned for Sheffield United.Joining us for this episode is Output Editor at Sky Sports and former deputy news editor at The Athletic, Kate Burlaga, who brings her usual poetry and prose to a fairytale period in the club's history. Rise and Fall From firm favourites for the drop and pundit premonitions of getting ‘annihilated', to ninth in the top flight and discussions on whether the Blades could even make the Champions League, and finally to a post-lockdown descent into disappointment, departures and a merciful return to the Championship, our previous short stint in the Premier League was a hell of a ride.In the third and final part of this series, we look at our two seasons back in the big time – from dreamland to nightmare. Joining us is senior BBC journalist and former Sheffield United correspondent for Yorkshire Live, Nathan Hemmingham, who lifts the lid on Wilder's unique warmth, why our second season in the Premier League went wrong, and what it was like to cover football during COVID restrictions. In this episode of The Gate 15 Interview, Andy Jabbour visits with Dr. Jeff Masters. Jeff Masters, Ph.D., worked as a hurricane scientist with the NOAA Hurricane Hunters from 1986-1990. After a near-fatal flight into category 5 Hurricane Hugo, he left the Hurricane Hunters to pursue a safer passion - earning a 1997 Ph.D. in air pollution meteorology from the University of Michigan. In 1995, he co-founded the Weather Underground, and served as its chief meteorologist and on its Board of Directors until it was sold to the Weather Company in 2012. Between 2005-2019, his Category 6 blog was one of the Internet's most popular and widely quoted sources of extreme weather and climate change information. He now frequently writes for YALE Climate Connections. On Twitter: @DrJeffMasters In the discussion we address: Jeff's incredible Hurricane Hugo experience. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report and going beyond the ‘planetary boundaries of safe operation for the planet.' Jeff's important ideas to understand about climate change. Jeff discusses his two biggest climate concerns - the disruptive threats from sea level rise and drought, including: A potential ‘massive financial threat to the US.' Jeff says, ‘we're not correctly pricing risk…there threatens to be a shakeout in the…market' and he notes insurance company struggles in Florida, Louisiana and California as examples before discussing the potential cascading effects associated with humans fleeing from the coasts. Threats to critical infrastructure, including real estate, water and wastewater, transportation and supply chains. And he explains his concerns about drought impacting food prices and leading to famine. Hurricane season 2023, an anticipated El Nino year, perhaps something that may look like the 2018 hurricane season. Plus! Devo, getting outdoors, watermelon, and the beauty of the Havasupai Canyon. A few references mentioned in or relevant to our discussion include: Jeff's Hurricane Hugo Experience: Weather Underground: Hunting Hugo: The Hurricane Hunters' Wildest Ride, a multi-part story of Jeff's incredible experience in the eye of Hurricane Hugo. Weather Underground: A flight through Hurricane Hugo, remembered 20 years later, 15 Sep 2009 Originally published in Weatherwise magazine, Hunting Hugo was made available in digital form, complete with the many photos I took on the flight, on the web site I co-founded, Weather Underground. A separate account of the flight was written by a reporter from Barbados who was on the flight, and was published in my Weather Underground blog in 2009. There was a 45-minute episode of “Air Crash Investigation” (AKA “Mayday”) on the Hugo flight called “Into the Eye of the Storm” that aired in 2014. Several hundred thousand dollars was spent on the episode, which included CGI effects, a set built in Toronto to simulate the flight, and actors playing the crew and scientists. In 2022, the video was available with a paid subscription to Paramount Plus. The video was also available for free at apparat.com. In a sport where money is literally the measure of success, this rodeo star's life changed the instant he won a cool million bucks in a single day's competition. The young bareback rider suddenly had to cope with expectations and pressures to perform like never before. Meantime- Rodeo itself is in transition. Sorta like golf, it has suddenly become the arena of very fit athletes, and more and more sponsor dollars are sloshing around. But if wild horses can't throw Richmond off...neither should physical trainers and accountants. He and Anastasia talk about the rodeo life, career cowboys and the slippery allure of a Texas accent.

I spent the weekend with a bunch of Humor Writer at the Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop. I had an absolute blast. I sat in on a session or two. One was lead by Jerry Zezima (Columnist and author of the book Leave it to Boomer). I have a new appreciation for authors. I do my little stories with sounds and tone of voice. They have words, and only words. Jerry gave us an exercise to think about “the Wildest Ride I Ever Had.” My idea came quickly. I was about and we were at Geauga Lake Amusement park (now closed). There was a big wooden coaster that had been around since the days of Howdy Doody, and you were scared to ride it just by looking at it. Not because it was tall and fast, but because you were pretty sure it was going to collapse. Big Dipper was 65 feet high, 2,680 feet long, and had a top speed of 32 mph. When built in 1927 it was one of the largest roller coasters in America. Click play to hear the rest of the story
