On today's episode, I talk to musician and actor Will Oldham. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Will was an actor before becoming a musician, appearing in John Sayles' Matewan as a teenager, as well as in films like Old Joy, Junebug and The Guatemalan Handshake, as well as TV shows like Wonder Showzen. In the early '90s, he began playing music as Palace - or more accurately, as different permutations of the name Palace - but a few years later, adopted the Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker which he's used ever since his 1999 album I See a Darkness. In the last two plus decades, he's released almost two dozen albums, some collaborations with artists like Bill Callahan and Matt Sweeney, and his latest Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You was just released in August on Drag City, and like everything else Will does, it's fantastic! A story about family, the end of the world, tears of neglected children, and utter confusion. Listen in as me and my returning guest, Dan, discuss through this indecipherable piece of performance art. Written by Vernon Chatman (South Park, The Heart, She Holler, and Wonder Showzen) and directed by 4 independent custom porn studios, this is not your run-of-the-mill indie film. It is a nonsensical menagerie of insanity and face-melting allegory. Rob Daniel of Electric Shadows said "if David Lynch, Christopher Morris and Lars von Trier teamed up and brought Ben Dover on as artistic consultant, Final Flesh would be the result," and he's pretty on the money. It tells the story of the Pollard family as they wait for an atomic bomb to drop. The father, mother, and daughter discuss life, death, capitalism, and a host of other weird shit all while in various states of undress. This art piece film was made when Vernon Chatman sent out four sections of the script to four different porn-for-hire production companies. Each working diligently (some more so than others) to bring this particular client's "kink" to life on digital video. What resulted was a 71 minute fever dream of strange dialogue, hey-at-least-they-tried acting, and various efforts to shoehorn in nudity and sexual moments when the script called for zero sex. Dan despised me for having him watch this, but I don't buy it. He seemed to laugh at a lot of it all things considered. Sadly, the film is incredibly difficult to procure. It is only on DVD and has been out of print. You can find it on eBay for a couple hundred bucks, though I'm sure some enterprising listeners who don't mind shirking the law might find other ways to get a copy.

With his latest film, “False Positive,” director John Lee takes the always thrilling genre of psychological horror and combines it with his signature dark comedy to construct a commentary on pregnancy, and a woman's right to her own bodily autonomy. Written by Lee, Ilana Glazer, and Alissa Nutting, “False Positive” stars Glazer as Lucy, who - along with her husband Adrian (Justin Theroux) - has been trying and failing to get pregnant. It's only after they find the fertility doctor of their dreams, Dr. Hindle, that the couple achieves success, learning that they are going to have a baby girl. However, Lucy detects something sinister about the doctor, and in investigating it, unravels the truth about him and her pregnancy. The character of Dr. Hindle, with his effortless charm that turns into something dark and mysterious, requires an actor who can play both sides; the charismatic hero but also the disturbed villain. In steps Pierce Brosnan, James Bond himself, to weave the character and his arc back and forth across that line. Brosnan is of course most famous for Bond and other dashing heroic roles, but his resume is also filled with ambiguous or fully antagonistic turns as well ranging from his antihero hitman in “The Matador,” or corrupt bureaucrats in “The Tailor of Panama” and “The Foreigner.” "False Positive's" straddling of tonal lines is also something that naturally fits into Lee's sensibilities as a filmmaker. Having been a key creative voice behind shows such as “Wonder Showzen,” “Superjail!,” and “The Heart, She Holler,” Lee would often contrast pleasing aesthetics and upbeat tonalities with morbid, oftentimes grotesque, and controversial humor. Between that background and his conviction in not mincing words as a creator, it allows him to convincingly craft a horror vehicle with teeth, while also strengthening the confronting messaging inherent in a film like “False Positive.” We spoke with Lee and Brosnan about "False Positive," particularly regarding its social and political relevance in a world where so much emphasis is put on women having children, but not providing them with a proper set of resources once they do get pregnant. Of course, in between talking about “False Positive,” we had to sneak in at least one Bond question. It's been nearly 20 years since Brosnan portrayed the iconic spy, and we were curious what differences there would be in his interpretation of the role today. Jesse sits down with acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee. He tells us about how addiction is made explicit in his movie, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, how he really feels about Larry Bird and about his own very serious addiction.... to Air Jordans. Jesse also talks to Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair. Katja is a casting director who previously won an Emmy for her work on 30 Rock; Ben Sinclair is an actor. The two are a married couple, and created the webseries High Maintenance. The show follows a New York City marijuana delivery guy as he visits his various clients. MTV2's Wonder Showzen looked like a kids' show. But it wasn't. It really, really, wasn't. Jesse tells us why Wonder Showzen is his favorite TV satire of the past decade.

Wonder Showzen, a show that shoved absurdity, politics and social commentary into a nonsensical children's show ran on MTV2 for two seasons and Xavier: Renegade Angel, a psychosexual spirit quest wrapped up in fast-paced absurdity and N64 graphics was an Adult Swim hit. Among other projects, John currently executive produces and directs Jon Glaser's show Delocated. A few weeks ago we sat down with John at his house in Brooklyn to discuss paper videogames, Occupy Wall Street, Jim Jarmusch, Ewok dogs, being open to randomness, and Gordon Lish.
