It's Memorial Day, and Angel Santana and Dr. E return with humor, heart, and a backyard saga that won't quit. After weeks of holes, tricks, and thwarted traps, a chubby woodchuck nicknamed Gordo is finally lured into captivity by the unlikeliest of weapons, raspberries. Follow the playful cat-and-mouse hunt, the small triumph that feels enormous, and the gentle care that follows capture. Against a backdrop of remembrance and gratitude, this episode stitches comic persistence to deeper themes of sacrifice and renewal. Listen for warm storytelling, a hopeful prayer, and a reminder that patience and a simple idea can turn the tide sometimes when you least expect it.
How can the AEC industry turn 41 million tons of annual wood waste into a circular economy powerhouse? In this episode of Practice Disrupted, Evelyn Lee ventures into the construction and manufacturing side of the built environment to speak with Todd Thomas, founder and CEO of Woodchuck. While the podcast typically focuses on architectural practice, Todd's work at the intersection of AI and sustainability offers a glimpse into a future where waste is no longer an afterthought, but a valuable commodity.Todd explains the staggering scale of the problem: over 41 million tons of wood are sent to U.S. landfills every year, accounting for nearly 40% of all landfill volume. He details how Woodchuck uses advanced AI platforms to identify, sort, and divert this material at industrial scale. By bridging the gap between construction sites and manufacturing outlets, Todd is building the infrastructure necessary to move the industry away from a "take-make-waste" model and toward a truly circular economy. The conversation also touches on the speed of execution in the tech world versus the slower pace of traditional architectural practice. Todd shares insights into how Woodchuck was "spun up" quickly to meet market demands and why architects need to start thinking about the material life cycle, and deconstruction, long before a project breaks ground."If we don't have a way to divert it, it goes to a landfill. It's that simple. And when it goes to a landfill, it produces methane, which is 80 times more potent than CO2. We have to treat waste as a resource if we want to change the math on sustainability." — Todd ThomasThis episode is a fascinating look at how adjacent industries are solving the problems architects design for. Todd emphasizes that while architects have the vision, they must partner with technologists and "builders" of systems to ensure their sustainable goals are actually met in the field.Guest:Todd Thomas is the founder and CEO of Woodchuck, a technology platform dedicated to wood waste diversion at industrial scale. With a background spanning construction, manufacturing, and emerging technology, Todd has spent his career building AI-driven platforms that solve complex environmental and supply chain challenges. He is a leading voice on the circular economy and the role of tech in scaling sustainability. This episode is especially for you if:✅ You want to understand the true environmental impact of construction waste and why wood is the most overlooked resource in the waste stream.✅ You are curious about how AI and machine learning are being used on the ground to identify and sort materials for reuse.✅ You want to learn how to design for deconstruction and help your clients participate in a circular material economy.✅ You are interested in the speed of tech startups and how their approach to business execution differs from traditional architecture firms.✅ You believe that architectural value should extend beyond the building's completion and into the responsible lifecycle of its materials. What have you done to take action lately? In a quiet neighborhood, peace is punctured by a hole—then another. What starts as a simple nuisance becomes a full-blown battle of wits between one man and a determined woodchuck. Angel thought the problem was sealed with concrete, but the ground—and the animal—had other plans. Traps are set, raspberries lie in wait, and nights fill with unsettling noises that turn this into psychological warfare. Through tension and humor, the episode weaves reflections on patience, faith, and the strange ways life forces us to trust. As the yard holds its breath, Angel asks for prayers for his family and the man he is trying to protect. The war isn't over; it's only getting started. Half-Faith: let it begin.
What began as a single hole in a peaceful yard becomes the opening salvo in a war of wits and will: one man, one shed, and a woodchuck that refuses to be outmaneuvered. Angel pours concrete, seals every entrance, and for a moment—triumph. Then he discovers the biggest hole yet, a betrayal at the shed that turns frustration into a kind of awe. The animal's persistence forces him to laugh, pray, and reconsider what control really means. This episode weaves humor, humility, and heart—inviting listeners to sit with the absurdity and the lesson: sometimes life digs where we least expect it, and faith asks us to trust through the mess. The war is not over; the next move is coming.
BGSSTDY130: Woodchuck Chuck Was a Cuck
In a quiet neighborhood where peace once held sway, something has returned: a hole. What began as a small, unnoticed crack in the earth quickly became the first act of a growing feud. He thought he had won—patched the hole, poured concrete, walked back into his house like a champion—only to be blindsided by a new breach on the other side of the property. When the head pops up and peers at him like a tiny, taunting landlord, the encounter turns from nuisance to personal. This is no random dig; it feels targeted. The woodchuck's confidence is almost comical, a peekaboo antagonist pushing every button. Frustration bubbles, but so does a reluctant respect for the creature's persistence. Beyond the laughs and the rising blood pressure, this skirmish becomes a lesson in patience and faith. The narrator prays for wisdom, patience, and maybe a plan—sprinkling salt, sealing holes, and testing the limits of resolve. It's a small battle that mirrors bigger tests, where persistence and prayer matter as much as brute force. The peace is not restored. The next episode arrives with an even bigger hole at the shed, and the war of property lines—and pride—escalates. Angel vs. the Woodchuck, Part 1 ends here, but the real fight has only begun. Have faith; let it begin.
In a quiet neighborhood, peace gives way to a single, stubborn hole. What begins as a curious inspection turns into a personal stand-off when a woodchuck reveals itself — and refuses to leave. The narrator pours concrete, prays, and braces for victory, but the animal's quiet persistence becomes a mirror for life's deeper challenges: patience, faith, and the surprises hidden just beneath the surface. Part 1 ends with the war just beginning — a short, sharp episode that blends humor, humility, and a cliffhanger you won't want to miss.

In this episode of Better Buildings for Humans, host Joe Menchefski welcomes Todd Thomas, founder of Woodchuck.ai, to reveal how AI is revolutionizing construction waste—and fueling a circular economy. Todd explains how Woodchuck uses smart dumpsters and computer vision to identify, sort, and transform tens of millions of tons of discarded wood into new materials, clean energy, and even hydrogen. From reducing landfill volume by 40% to creating zero-carbon biomass processing, Todd breaks down why sustainability doesn't have to cost more—it can save money and extend landfill life. They also explore the future of mass timber, the promise of molten salt reactors, and the power of planning for circularity at the design stage. This conversation is a fascinating look at how technology can close the loop in building and demolition.More About Todd ThomasTodd Thomas is a recognized voice in AI, innovation and entrepreneurship, and is the best-selling author of Unleashing Abundant Energy. This week Josh and Kevin welcome Corey Corr to the show. Corey had responded to a post on MI coyote hunting outdoors page about being a guest, and suggested a topic of discussion. We start by talking a little bit about recent Woodchuck hunting, then get right into talking with Corey. Corey had a question about landowners NOT wanting coyote hunters due to increased deer populations, so we discussed the experiences we have had with that issue, which hasn't been a lot, but we have encountered it. We delve into why landowners would not want coyotes taken off their property and what we can do to help with other species, developing good relationships with landowners, and the importance of HELPING them with their issues, leading to continued hunting opportunities of not only predators but also other species, from varmints to deer or turkeys, which can lead to year round opportunities. We also get on the subject briefly on cooking upland birds and other wild game, turns out Corey has experience in the culinary world and we appreciate his take on that. Then we get a little off topic, but in a good way, as Corey talks to us about upland bird hunting and dogs for upland birds. We really appreciate hearing about that kind of stuff and Corey did a good job telling us about the ins and outs of bird dogs from his perspective. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. Boy have we got an episode for you. Lori sits down and opens up about the beginning of her career, what happened on that disastrous Full House shoot in Hawaii, and what it was REALLY like working with Dave, Bob, and John. The guys have a mutual nostalgic experience with Elmer's Glue and they both indulge in the simple pleasure of peeling dry glue off of their hands like they did as kids. Meanwhile, Justin is still struggling with woodchucks ravaging his garden. An Aussie listener named Kieran writes in with a very flattering letter about how the show is better than Smartless (sorry, Bateman), and they include couple Would You Rathers for the guys to ponder. Finally, Andrea calls in with the great news that the show inspired her to make her own podcast and she landed her first job in the industry out of it!
